I own a macbook pro mid-2010 - problem-updated to mountain lion and continuously crashes and reboots when working with audio and visuals (TRIED GFXcardstatus v 2.3) sometimes helps sometimes it does not, apple info ?

I know this is a widespread problem
I am not from the U.S.
what solutions does apple have for us? , are there any?
I read there's an issue with the NVIDIA card , is there anyone I can contact? I bought it in the U.S.

If the machine is less than 3 years old, Apple will replace the motherboard under a recall program. If it's older you may get stuck with that cost. I'd make a Genius Bar appointment and take it in.

My MacBook Pro mid 2010 was upgraded to mountain lion os x and then my wifi started saying no hardware installed

    Hello Harrisonhcue,
I would be concerned too if I was getting the message "no hardware installed" when trying to use Wi-Fi on my MacBook Pro.  For a message like this, I recommend resetting your System Management Controller (SMC) and NVRAM.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Just downloaded mavericks, now iPhoto won't load because of an error message that says "You can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac" . I have a 17" MacBook Pro, mid 2010 model running 2.53 GHz and Intel Core I5,

I just downloaded the new Mavericks operating sytem on my mid 2010 MacBook Pro, 17" 2.53GHz, Intel Core I5 machine. My IPhoto is no longer working at all, I'm getting an error message that says - "You Can't open the application "IPhoto" because it is not supported on this type of Mac". I also loaded Mavericks onto my other MacBook Pro 17", mid 2009 model and everything works fine. I would think that the newer Mac would easily work with IPhoto. Also, when I try to download from the App Store, it asks for my Apple ID and Password, I enter it, and then the little spinning color wheel just spins forever, with nothing ever happening. I tried downloading the IPhoto Upgrade but it never actually downloads, HELP!!!

What version of iPhoto do you have installed?  Is if one of the versions shown as not compatible in this screenshot?
If it is then go to the App Store and download iPhoto 9.5.  It will be free if you have an iPhoto 9 or later verson currently.

  • MacBook Pro (mid 2010, 15", i5) - heat, thermal paste and genius bar...

    Hi all,
I'd like some advice. I own a mid 2010 core i5 15" MBP which I purchased when they were released (April 2010 or something like that). Since then the laptop has worked more or less OK but it's always been plagued with high temperatures, 75C+ in idle... with basically nothing running or something light such as just Safari (*without* Flash, as I only open Chrome when a website I need doesn't work without Flash; everywhere else, for example YouTube etc, I just use the HTML5 version of the players). The fans stay almost always at 6K rpm, and only rarely they run at a lower speed - when for example I switch the laptop on after having left it switched off for a while, etc. So the fans seem to work OK and seem to respond to the temperature; I have even tried resetting SMC several times, but no difference.
It just looks like the CPU runs hotter than it should. I have default energy saving settings, and don't have any software installed that may keep the CPU running high - such as Caffeine, SmartSleep, etc. Anyway, even a clean install of the OS (Lion) won't make any difference. If I leave the laptop switched off for a while and I switch it on again, within a minute or two the temperature is high again even if I don't open anything else. Even if in the activity monitor there's nothing using a lot of CPU. The temperature also does go further up if I run something CPU intensive such as Handbrake.
While the laptop has worked almost always OK (I do think that some freezes or other occasional stability issues may also depend on temperature), I don't think it's running as well as it could / should from a temperature point of view.
I have read lots of discussions in here and elsewhere, and from direct experience with other laptops (Apple and not) in the past, I believe the issue may likely be related to poor application of the thermal paste. I could re-apply it (for example the AS5 or similar) myself very easily, but I don't want to void the warranty.
I have the 3-years Apple Care, but I have never needed to ask Apple for support before, so I don't know how it works.
Sorry for the lengty introduction... here's the questions:
    - Can I just go to the nearest Apple Store (London, Regent St.) or am I *required* to book an appointment with the "genius" bar?
    - Is it likely they will take into consideration my advice to reapply the thermal paste as this is quite likely the source of the problem?
    - What is the likelihood that they may just replace my laptop with a newer one?
    - Does the AppleCare entitle me with some particular privileges for what concerns support?
    - I have also upgraded the RAM to 8GB a few months ago, and replaced the HDD (which I use as external drive) with an SSD. Do I need to restore the original components in the laptop before going to the AppleStore? Or is this not needed since RAM and HDD are user-replaceable parts?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

Probably you have to remove the Geforce Grafic drivers as discribed here. But please wait until some others in the forum confirm this.
If you don't understand how to do these commands with Terminal, ask once again for help.
In your message you did not metion, that you just updated 1 hour and something your OS ("System uptime in nanoseconds: 6688834587150"). This is an important information.

  • Macbook pro (mid-2010) Seagate Momentus 7200.4 click and beep won't boot

    Hello,
Recently, I was using my MBP when I noticed that it started beeping an clicking. The computer basically stopped working and upon reboot there was no boot. I just got the grey screen with beeps and clicks.
Now, I have removed the drive just trying to get my data off of it.
I can hear the drive spinning up, but then there is a click and beep pattern and unfortunately the disk is not recognized. Strangely, in Disk Utility, it 'sees' some sort of 4.14GB portion but cannot do anything with it.
Any ideas on how to recover the data off the drive?
    Thanks,
    Justin

send it to a data recovery company if you don't have a backup.  If you dont have a backup, you'll wish you did when you see how much money it costs to retrieve data off a damaged HDD (if they can even retrieve a portion or all of it).  Google "hdd data recovery" for lists of companies.

  • Installing 8GB ram on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010)

Hi, I have bought 8GB(2*4GB) ram to install on my macbook pro, when I install both I get a black screen but when installing one or the other with one of the original ram they both work. What can I do to fix this problem??

When you install RAM, reboot your computer with the "D" key held down (or the Option-D keys). These will load the Apple Hardware Tests.
With these tests open, check the box for the extended memory test, and then start the test. This will have the system thoroughly test the RAM for errors.
In your case, it appears you may have a bad set of RAM modules, but you can check them using the method above.
When you have them paired with your original RAM, how much memory does the system report as being available when you select About This Mac in the Apple menu? If you are using Lion or Mountain Lion, then in this panel click "More Info" and then select the "Memory" section, and see what the system reports as being installed.
Is this RAM test necessay with every upgrade of memory or just if you have problems after the upgrade

Click on the Apple and then on about this Mac. In the new window, click on the "version 10.9.2" until you see the serial number displayed.

    Hey Clintonfrombirmingham
I called Apple technical support in Denmark, but with no positive reply.
She couldn't do anything, and said that They had sent a recall Email about the problem and with their offer to repair the Macbook Pro, but I'd never recieved an Email about the problem. She wasn't in power to make an exception. It can't be true that i paid a lot of money, for a product that can't barely stand on its own feets, Apple didn't tell me that the product I was about to buy, would restart every 5 minute. and now when  they know the problem, they wont repair it? it just don't make sense for me. If a car seller discovers that all the brakes in a car he had sold, will crash after some years he will call all the cars back to repair no mater what. i just don't understand how Apple will make good service for their custumers, by extending the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but wont take the computers there is a little bit to old, 4 months will make the difference. i can't believe it.
    What can i do now?
    best regards Oskar

  • Does my macbook pro mid 2010 work with handoff?

My macbook pro has airdrop which only worked once with my iPad air, now nether my macbook pro or my iPad air see one another, and handoff does that work with my macbook pro mid 2010?
    Thanks

AIrDrop is different. Airdrop between Macs works with older Macs:
    System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*

MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 and later)
    iMac (Late 2012 and later)
Mac mini (Late 2012 and later)
    Mac Pro (Late 2013)

    Apple Unibody 13.3" MacBook Pro (Mid-2010): 4GB vs. 8GB DDR3 1066MHz Memory (RAM).
    1. About my Mac.
         Processor: Intel® Core 2 Duo (2.66GHz)
         Memory (RAM): 4.00GB DDR3 1066MHz (2 x 2.00GB)
Hard Drive: 320GB 5400RPM (Apple Stock HD)
         Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 320M (256MB)
Operating System: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.1)
    2. My concerns/questions
For quite some time now, I've been planning to upgrade the memory (RAM) of my MacBook Pro from 4.00GB (Apple Stock) to 8.00GB. In terms of "FASTER BOOT TIMES, IMPROVED RESPONSIVENESS (OPENING and CLOSING PROGRAMS, FILES & ETC.), SMOOTHER GRAPHICS, ABILITY TO OPEN MORE PROGRAMS SIMULTANEOUSLY AND OVERALL IMPROVEMENT IN PERFORMANCE", does it really make a BIG difference?
If ever I am going to pursue this upgrade, should I let Apple do the upgrade or buy the parts and do it myself?
If I am going to buy the parts and install it myself, what brand do you recommend? Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.?
Why does Apple charge so much for memory (RAM) upgrades? Is the memory module they are using any special compared to the ones we can find in Amazon (Crucial, Kingston, OWC & etc.)?
Thanks for helping me out with my concerns.

I recommend OWC RAM because it's reasonably priced and OWC's support is great if you ever need it. I recommend installing the RAM yourself because it's dead simple. There is no good reason for anyone ever to pay Apple's prices for RAM.
I don't think you will see faster boot times with more RAM, but that shouldn't be a concern, because there's seldom any need to shut down or restart a MBP. Just put it to sleep when you aren't using it, unless you won't use it again for more than two or three days. Opening and closing programs won't benefit significantly from more RAM either, but when running multiple large programs at once, you will see a significant improvement in their performance. It's well worth the small investment ($65) to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB.

  • How much does it cost to replace the speakers in MacBook Pro (mid 2010)?

The sound from my MacBook Pro (mid 2010)  has suddenly become fuzzy. I suspect that I blew a speaker.
Does anyone know how much it would cost to have one or all the speakers replaced?

You may check for pricing on the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com websites.  You may also bring the MBP into an Apple store genius bar and get a replacement quote from them.
    Ciao.

If you have tried a variety of devices on both USB ports, and they all work on one and not on the other then the best option is an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free regardless of warranty status.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 Battery Capacity

I've read a few threads about this, mostly about battery capacity rapidly dropping after an install of ML. I installed ML when it first came out, and just noticed the drastic decrease in battery life about 3 weeks ago. My capacity could have potentially been dropping since I installed ML (and I just now noticed it), or it may have just started a couple weeks ago when I noticed. I'm not sure.
Either way, my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010) now has a battery life of less than an hour, even with extremely light processor load. I contacted Apple about this, and the tech said that the battery was rated for 1000 cycles. I'm currently at 220, and my battery capacity is a pathetic 30%. He said that since I wasn't under warranty, there was nothing they could do besides replace the battery - which I really want to avoid since I'm a broke college student.
Is there anything I can do here? I understand that I'm not under warranty anymore, and this wouldn't be a problem if my battery was degrading normally. However, getting 1/5th of the recommended battery life is pretty sad. I've read that doing a clean install of Mountain Lion/Lion might help. Is there a way I can do this without having to back up all my files? I don't have an external hard drive or anything.
It seems this is a common topic in these forums. Any help or links to solutions would be great. If this is answered in a similar topic, I'll gladly delete.
