I photo and external drive

how do i save photos to external drive and possibly set it up that all photos go to external drive so i can save room on my hard drive

Hello Myron,
It can be very handy to store your iPhoto library (and your iTunes library for that matter) on an external drive. Make sure the drive is formated for Mac (MacOSExtended) rather than for Windows (MS-DOS, etc.). Storing Mac data on a windows formated drive reduces performance and can damage data over time.
Apple documents moving the library to other locations on their website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/7.0/en/6331.html
You can check to make sure your drive is formated correctly and re-format if needed following another knowledge base article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306143
Please be aware that if you do have to reformat the drive it will ERASE any information currently on the drive.
Cheers!

Most likely, the "requested location" where you are trying to copy files to does not have WRITE permission, and so you need to change the permissions.

  • Moving music and photos from external drive

Bought a new 27inch iMac for Xmas this week. Today my G5 imac wouldn't boot and has a video RAM error code 2NYD/1/4:2103 and I can't boot in safe mode or from and external drive with carbon copy cloner backup. I am resigned to the G5 being toast. This of course removes transferring files using Migration Assistant.
My question is can I bring all my iphoto pictures and itunes songs/ library to the new iMac from the external drive and what is the best way to do this ?? Will there be issues with the backup being 10.5 and the new iMac being Snow Leopard ??
    Thanks for any help.

Read the article I provided and it will give you all you need to run Setup Assistant successfuly. You will need a cable to connect the two machines, the G5 probably only has FW400 and the new machine only has FW800 so you will need a cable like this one. Your local computer store should have one or possibly your local Radio Shack. If you can't find one at either place just order it from Amazon.
NOTE: There will be no need to drag and drop any files from the external HD to the new machine, SA will take care of it all. SA is also smart enough to not overwrite newer applications on the new machine. For example if the Clone has iLife 08 on it and the new machine has iLife 11 on it the new machine will only have iLife 11 on it after running SA.

  • Unable to access photos on external drive

I have Aperture 2.1.3 and I have been using Photo Mechanic to quickly import, edit, and save my photos to one of my external drives. I have been using Aperture to adjust some of these images by importing them into Aperture but the stored files have remained on the external drive. Suddenly, when I try to import the photos from external drive for Aperture manipulation the photos are not available for import. But the photos are viable on my external drive, and If I use Photoshop or Photo Mechanic, I CAN access and import these same files .
I hope this makes sense! I need advise!
    thanks to all!

.plist is the preference file. Go to your User/Library/Preferences and take com.apple.Aperture.plist (the preferences are in alphabetical order) and put the file on your desktop. Then restart Aperture. Aperture will return to its default settings and there will be a new preference file in the Library/Preferences folder.
If this clears your problem, then your old plist file was corrupt and you should put it in the trash and rebuild your own preferences.
If you still have the problem after restarting Aperture, then it's not the plist file, and you can trash the new plist and restore your old one from the Desktop back into the Library/Preferences folder.
Have you tried to reboot the machine. Sometimes things go wrong in the connection with an external drive and rebooting the machine clears the problem. You could also reset the PRAM (on boot, hold down Command-Option-P-R and wait for the second chime). Sometimes the PRAM gets corrupted and this affects the relationship with external drives.
You could also import the RAW files into Aperture, instead of using them as referenced files.

Leopard.  Did a full restore from Time Machine.  Now I can't access my other internal and external drives.  I get the following error: The folder “Capture Video” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.  I have repaired permissions pn the main harddrive.  When I try too click on a disk I get the previously stated error.  I can't even open up information to see what permission/access there is.  It simply will not let me see the content.  It shows the content of my main hard drive when I have clicked the other harddrive's name.

    Solved:
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/"FCP Time Machine BU"

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • Cannot install Yosemite as it keeps telling me both my internal and external drives are time machine backups

Cannot install Yosemite. Keeps telling me that both my internal and external
drives are backing up with TIme Machine. Any suggestions?

Is it actively backing up, or are you encountering a dialog stating that Yosemite cannot be installed because the disk is being used for Time Machine backups?
Read OS X: Cannot install on a volume used by Time Machine for backups
If for some reason you have a folder called Backups.backupdb at the root level of the hard disk on which you want to install Yosemite, move it to the Trash.

  • Why did my event library stopped showing my partitions and external drives?

The event library stopped recognizing my computer partitions and my external hardrive. It looks like all events are available, just not organized by partitions and drives. The partitions and external drive still show up in the project library.

I don't see anything like what you mentioned... " having a folder at the root level that emulates a camera, a folder with a name like DCIM or Private." Here are the windows showing the files on the user/HD, the tutorial image and the external drive. You can see the Final Cut Folders in each. In the past, I would see each of these in the Event Library so I could create a new event wherever I want to store it. I have also included a screen shot of FCPX showing the Project Library. It still shows the various devices, as I am used to seeing in the Event Library.

How do I Retrieve imovie projects from and external drive back into my mac internal drive?

Every working drive, Internal or External, should produce an Icon on your Desktop. If you cannot see those, click on the Desktop (to get Finder) and choose Preferences off the Finder Menu. The general pane has checkboxes for "Show these items on the Desktop:"
Double click the Icon for your External Drive to open it. Open the folders on it until you find the Items you want to copy. Drag them to the Icon of your Internal Drive, or open the folder where you want them to land and drop them in there.
A drive that does not appear on the desktop after you have asked it to may be damaged. But it would be smart to do a Restart to see if it is recognized again at next Startup.

My computer crashed. I saved my music in cloud and external drives. Re-installed iTunes on computer. No playlists are listed. Will I lose them if I connect my iPod to the computer? Some of my playlists are work related.  I NEED THEM!  Don't want to lose them!

Was the ENTIRE iTunes folder copied from the computer to the External drive?  If so, simply copy it back and everything in iTunes will be exactly as it was in iTunes.

  • Trying to restore photos from external drive and realized TimeMachine had been turned off.  Found in Imac backup folder in iPhoto library a modified folder with many of the missing pics.  Can I restore these?

I recently had a hard drive crash on my iMac.  After replacing the drive, I discovered that TimeMachine had apparently been turned off for six months, and all my photos from that period were missing after the restore.  In looking on the external drive used by TimeMachine, I discovered a folder called Imac backup, and under iPhoto Library was a folder called Originals and subfolders for each year.  To my surprise, there were photos covering the missing time period!  Somehow I imported the 2011 folder from the external drive into iPhoto, and then I discovered they were small files of less than 100 KB each, not the 1-2 MB original photos.  So now all of 2011 is screwed up, not just from May on.  These photos also include faces pulled from many larger group photos.
I can get Jan - April restored using TimeMachine.  But in continuing to explore the Imac backup folder, I found a similar folder in iPhoto Library called Modified.  This folder has many of the missing photos in their original MB size in folders indexed by date for the missing period after April.  Is there a way that I can get these modified photos back onto my new hard drive and into the iPhoto library without causing more damage?  If TimeMachine was turned off after April, how did those modified photos and all those small images from the missing period find their way to the external drive?
    Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

What you want to do is merge the two Libraries? The only way to do this is to use the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
I created a new iPhoto Library on the iMac and dragged the entire iPhoto Library from the MacBook into that new Library. It worked, however it all came over into one big album and my previous album structure was gone
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.

  • Loss of photos and external hard drive disabled

I had 22,343 photos and video on an external hard drive. I was not able to back up all of my photos due to limited space on the Photoshop.com.  I was pleased when you said we would have unlimited backup first and then so many free uploads monthly.  I thought since my photos were on an external hard drive, all that would happen was you would make a copy of the photos I had on my hard drive. I received a notice stating my photos had been successfully moved to Revel. When I attempted to open one of my photos that I expected to still be on my hard drive, it stated it could not open the photo and stated I may have moved the photo without going through Photoshop.com.. I immediately checked for the hard drive I had the photos on and to my shock, that hard drive is no longer listed. I have moved the hard drive several ways to make sure something was not wrong with the USB port. No matter where I connected the hard drive the computer did not bring it up at all. It is as if there is nothing on the hard drive. With the hard drive not being listed, I am unable to verify there is anything on the hard drive at all. I went back into Photoshop.com and attempted to open more photos. Every one of the 22,343 photos states it cannot find the photo and ask if I want to reconnect. I have tried this but this does not work either.  I am desperate to know where my photos are and how I can get them back onto my external hard drive. I would like all remarks sent to my e-mail address of [email protected] .Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give me.

You say your Elements organizer has 22343 files. I presume all the files in Photoshop.com came from there, so ofthe 22,343 files you had on the hard drive, 8,153 were stored in the cloud. Of those 8,153 files, 7,515 non-duplicated jpg files migrated to Revel. The other 638 fils that were on Photoshop.com that did not migrate were probably duplicates of the ones that did, or not jpg files.
Besides those, there are then about 14,190 files that you had on organizer that you did not have on Photoshop.com. Those are the ones that you will not find in Revel.
If you can hook up the hard drive and get elements to recognize it again, then you could import the rest into Revel (assuming you have a premium account  or first 30 days of unlimited uploads since the free account is limited to 50 uploads a month)
Is that a bit more clear? There are still many Elements files that are not in Revel because they were not in Photoshop.com before your files migrated.

  • Moving catalog and photos with external drive, Elements can't see catalog database

Tried searching, but couldn't find my situation.
I have an old computer with a second hard drive (1.5 TB).  I pulled it from my old computer and put it in the new computer.
I also copied my "My Catalog" folder which contains the catalog database file (catalog with a type "PSE8DB").
Got the second drive installed fine in my new computer.
    Reinstalled Elements 8.
But the File / Catalog dialog box can't seen the existing catalog database.  I can browse to the folder, but it doesn't show up.
Old computer was Windows XP.  New computer is Windows 7.
Both are using Photoshop Elements 8.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    John,
1 - Where are your photo files located ? What is the drive letter assignment of this second drive ?
My suspicion is that the photos (and perhaps also video files) reside on that second hard drive which you physically moved and installed in the new computer.
2 - Where is the PSE Catalog file (both on the old XP system and on the new W 7 system) ?  Is that folder containing the PSE Catalog on the C drive or on that second hard drive which is now installed on the new W 7 system ?
3 - FYI -  I agree with the DJ Paige recommendation to "In Windows, double-click on the *.pse8db file" as a means of starting the Organizer with the Catalog that you previously had under XP . This generally works on most versions of PSE although I did have an experience with PSE 8 where it did not work initially.
4 - FYI - If your photo files were stored under My Pictures under XP, then I think that the other suggestions about PSE not being able to find photosand needing to do a PSE Backup are relevant -
"You catalog will be holding the absolute location of the files in the catalog. These will no longer be valid when porting to Win7 from XP"
However, if your photo files are stored on that second hard drive, I am skeptical about that conclusion.
5 - FYI - I have seen a report of successfully moving a physical second internal drive from old XP PC to new Windows 7 PC with PSE 10. I think that you should be able to do the same with PSE 8.

  • How do I move my photos to external drive

How do I move some of my photos to an external drive to free up space on my hard drive?

And what if I want some of my photos still on my internal drive?
Can I tell iphoto which events I want on the external?
I opened a new library on the external drive. This is working quite good - exept with AppleTV2
So I am looking for a way to have only one (my default library) on the hard drive, but have SOME of the actual date on the external drive...
Mr.Churchil here already suggested to create a new user with an own library. That sounds logical to me - but I don't knwo how to do it...
Can I transfer whole events or photos from one library to another than?

  • Backing up Air SSD and external drive to Time Machine

    Hi
Sincere apologies if this has been asked and answered but I cannot find an answer or phrase a search properly to do so.
I have a 500gb MacBook and am planning to get a MacBook Air.  I would like to move much of the content from my MacBook to an external drive b/c it won't fit on the Air--music, photos, etc.
What I cannot seem to understand is how I will then back it all up. That is, I will have some content on my Air that I use frequently--work files and so forth--and I will have mostly media on the external drive.  Do I then use a second external hard drive for Time Machine backups and if so can I set it to back up my Air's SSD and the external drive that is storing my media files?  (In case it's relevant, I also currently back up my MacBook offsite using Crashplan.)
I hope I phrased this correctly and that my question is clear.
A related question: Part of the reason for wanting to get an Air is the increased ease of mobility.  I would like to have some music stored on the Air, and accessible via iTunes, so that I can listen to it when I take it to the office, when traveling, etc.  Is this possible?
    Thank you very much

Correct.  Having Time Machine store it's backups on the same drive as data it's backing up is mostly self defeating.  If that drive were to fail then you'll lose the data and it's backup.  Time Machine to Time Capsule is also great because it is wireless and just needs to have power nearby.  You can even hide it behind furniture in the house (out of site) and it'll still backup continuously whenever your laptop is in the house and not sleeping.  It's so easy you'll forget about it until you need it someday.
If you want an ideal home backup solution I would recommend:
    1) A TimeCapsule on your home network to serve as your passive, local, incremental backup system for accidental file deletions, or rolling back changes.
    2) Use a cloud backup service such as CrashPlan or BackBlaze for passive, off-site backups in case of a disaster (fire, theft, etc.)
    3) And lastly, it's always nice to have a third backup type, a bootable clone (using SuperDuper!, etc.) that you actively create just prior to any major upgrade of Mac OS
Having even one of these puts you far ahead of the majority of home computer users.  Having all three backup types should give you great piece of mind that you are really protecting your data files and media.
