I recently purchased an iMac and used migration assistant to get all files from my emac, but now I have three user accounts.  I only want one (perhaps two) accounts.  I want all my music, photos and word docs from old computer in one user name

I recently purchased a mac and used a firewire to transfer my files onto my new imac with migration assistant.  Now I have 3 users.  I want one with all my main files (pictures, music, files from my old computer).
I don't mind having an additional "family" account so my younger daughter can't mess us things, but I can't figure out how to get files from one to the next and then delete the one user name.
Thanks,

In order to delete other accounts you must be logged into an admin account. You cannot delete the account into which you are currently logged.
When you started the new computer you were in the Setup Assistant. You created a new admin account before finishing the setup. You need to log into that account because it is an admin account. You can then delete the account you migrated from the old computer (and any other accounts you don't need or want.)
Then create a temporary new user account with admin status - name it, Temp. Log out of the current account and log into the new account, Temp. Now delete the initial account you created in Setup Assistant. You now have one account, Temp. Now re-migrate your data from the old computer. When that is completed log into the migrated account, which should be an admin account, and delete the temporary account, Temp.

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

  • How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from

How do I use Migration Assistant to get my Mail and Keychain settings from my Power Mac G5 2.3Ghz? I just purchased a new 2.5 MacBook Pro which will be delivered tomorrow, and I want to to know how to transfer Mail and Keychain?
Thank You in advance for your reading and replying.
    Kindest Regards,
    Sebastian

Rather than using Migration Assistant, which can cause trouble with the PPC to Intel change, simply boot the G5 in FireWire target disk mode and manually transfer the following:
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
You might want to look over Kappy's helpful guide for migrating, which covers the full process for a manual migration (including the above files).
    Hope this helps...

  • Using Migration Assistant to Move Data Files from one Account to New User

Is it possible or recommended to use Migration Assistant to move data files from an old user account to a new user account on the same volume/hard disk?

Migration Assitant cannot be used as a simple file transfer utility. MA can transfer an entire Home folder or entire Users folder but not individual files.
In general files in one user account cannot be moved to another user account as this would violate built-in security measures.
What you can do is to copy the files to an external device like a hard drive or flash drive. First log in to the old account. Then configure the drive to ignore preferences by Pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and check the Ignore permissions on this volume checkbox at the bottom of the window. Copy your files to the device. Log into the new account. Verify the external drive is still configured to ignore permissions (reset it, if not.) Copy the files from the external device into the Home folder of the new account. I would create a temporary folder for these files. If you still end up without the proper permissions you will need to make modifications that are easier done if all the files are in a single folder.

I don't use iTunes's "fetch artwork", so I'm not 100% sure, but unless you are signed in to your iTunes account, artwork is not automatic. Even then, iTunes doesn't always find it.
You can copy-and-paste artwork from the inernet, either Amazon or Google. I use 300x300 pixel images.
For the future, if you have iTunes questions, you might be better off posting them in the iTunes for Mac forum, this is iTunes for Windows. In this situation, it doesn't make any difference, but next time maybe it will.

Used Migration Assistant to import PC files. It created second user account that won't sync with iPad.  How do I merge accounts?

It's next to impossible to fully merge two accounts on a Mac easily.
This being said, though, please take a look at "The Great Pondini's" site where this specific issue is addressed.  There should be information here you can use to get things sorted out.

  • I MIGRATED MUSIC AND PHOTOS FROM PC TO NEW IMAC VIA ETHERNET/MIGRATION ASSISTANT. IT SAID that job was completed but i cannot find anyof my stuff. where is it?

i cannot find music, photos or documents after migrating from pc to new imac. both computers said transfer was successful but i cannot find anything. where is it?

It went to a new user Account.
Go to: Apple > System Preferences > Users & Groups to see the new Account.
For more info, see > About Windows Migration Assistant
    Notes
This process will create a new user account on your Mac that contains the data migrated from the Windows PC.  It will not merge the information with any existing user accounts on your Mac.
This article only applies to migrating from a Windows-based PC to a Mac. For assistance with performing a migration from one Mac to another, please see How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac.
Windows-specific file types, such as .exe files, are not transferred.
You will need to enter your password when you first use an account, such as when you use your transferred email account in the Mail application for the first time.

  • Can I do a clean install of 10.5 and use migration assistant from backup ?

I want to install OS 10.5 on to my Macbook. If I do a clean install rather than an archive and install can I then use migration assistant to transfer my accounts and emails from the cloned Superduper backup I have made on an external drive?
Or is Archive and Install better?

I think 99.9% of the people know what you want to do by "clean" (ie, erase or reformat) and that insures there aren't any file or directory problems when you start, that the new OS is all that will be taking up space. Clean has two connotations: Windows or OS 9. There are lots of words that are "no longer used" but everyone knows what "initialize" or reformat means and does.
If you said, "Scratch that" you could mean, "scratch that idea" even though you can't actually scratch anything. And the idea isn't in stone (scratch out) or written with a pencil where you could erase the word or line. Or draw a line through words to "scratch out the line." There can be multiple meanings. Some languages have 5 words for "blue" to denote different shades of blue, and meaning.
Your drive is 60GB which is on the small side so that is one more reason to reformat.
And because installers will create and delete a lot of files, and scatter around, I would do another SD backup (and leave your old backup as is) so you have a copy of Leopard you can boot from and that would be just Apple OS (maybe after applying the 900MB of updates required to get to 10.5.4+).

  • IPhoto won't work on my OLD imac after using migration assistant to my new imac.

So I recently used migration assistant to transfer all of my documents, music, photos, etc. to my new imac which was purchased a month ago.  I used an 800 firewire and the migration was successful and there seems to be not problems on the new computer.  However I went on my old imac to load some new photos off of my iphone.  Much to my dismay iphoto opened up with a window that said, "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto.  Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."  I don't recall ever using iPhoto on either of the computers during migration assistant aside from putting the old photos into iPhoto on the new computer.  The old imac is a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and it still has iLife '06.  So how would I go about fixing this?  Should I update to iLife '11 or is there an easier way without using new software?  Thank you!

Then that looks ver like you opened the Library on the old machine with the new iPhoto on the new machine, and it has now been updated to iPhoto 11.
Before deciding to update, make sure your machine can run the same version of iPhoto as the new machine.

  • HT4889 I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. How do I now 'migrate' all the files from both accounts into one to save myself having two accounts, both of which are me? Help?

I have accidentally created another account when using Migration Assistant to a new MBA. I have read that I probably should not have skipped migration in the initial set up and the problem would have been avoided but, alas, here I am. Does anyone know how I can 'migrate' all the files from one of the accounts that has been created to the other, so then I can delete it and have a single user on the computer seeing as I am the only person using it? I have read starting again, if this is the way to go, where is the best place to start 'starting again'?

Yes definitely should see it but its not coming up (I don't think) when I log out of 2nd user and into the main account. Opening finder in the 2nd account, I can obviously find the public folder because thats where I dropped all the files, but when in the main account, it can't be found. The only public folder that comes up is the folder for that account (main account) and it does not display files I'm looking for. Frustrating....
EDIT: Have found it through a round-about way but all music and photo and movie etc files have a red stop sign disallowing them from being transferred. Can you guess what the next question will be?

  • I am trying to use migration assistant to transfer my files from my old Macbook to my new Macbook Pro, but it keeps messing up after I enter the passcode. Help?

I have already updated my Migration Assistant program and changed my FireWall settings to allow all incoming connections, but Migration Assistant still isn't working. I get all the way to the passcode verification step, and then it stops working. On my new computer, a message pops up saying that it could not connect to my old computer. On my old computer, I can enter the passcode, but then the little spinny beachball shows up and then Migration Assistant loses its connection and begins to "look for other computers." How do I fix this? My old computer is operating on Leopard and my new computer is operating on Mountain Lion.

You can do it wirelessly, but that will take some time... you could also purchase a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. That would certainly be faster. You should be able to purchase either adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Permissions problem after using Migration Assistant - unable to copy files

I have a PowerBook G4 and 2 iMac G5 desktops - one iMac at home and one at work. I've had the iMac at home and the PowerBook for a while. The iMac at work is one I've just inherited from another user. Both are exactly the same model - 2Ghz iMac G5 (ambient light sensor). All 3 machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.6.
I decided to use Migration Assistant to transfer my Admin user account on the PowerBook to my work iMac G5, all of which worked great. So I now have an exact copy of the user folder from my PowerBook on my work iMac G5, and consequently the same combination of username/password.
When I mount the drive from my PowerBook on my work iMac via AFP I can copy files from the PowerBook to the iMac. But if I try to copy the file back to the PowerBook I receive the error "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items". The file does appear on the PowerBook, but it is 0K and therefore useless.
Worse, if I'm replacing a file on the PowerBook, I get the usual "An item named "blah" already exists in this location..." dialog. If I click Yes to replace the file it is wiped, but then the permission error pops up leaving me with a 0K file on the PowerBook and no original.
If I mount the work iMac drive on my PowerBook I see exactly the same issue - i.e. I can copy to the local machine from the mounted drive. But I cannot copy anything back without receiving the permissions error.
My home iMac G5 was not set up using migration assistant, but I do use exactly the same combination of username/password. It does not exhibit the same behaviour. I can mount the PowerBook drive on the home iMac and happily copy files back and forth with no permission errors at all. And the same if I mount the home iMac drive on the PowerBook - no problems.
So I'm guessing that this behaviour is a result of using Migration Assistant to create the user account on my work iMac. If I log into another account on my work iMac, mount the PowerBook drive and copy a file to the PowerBook it works fine. The problem only occurs in the account created by Migration Assistant.
Does anyone know how to resolve this, short of having to create a new user account on the work iMac and move all my files from one account to the other?

    Hi,
you need to adjust the permissions for the files on your harddrive.
I think you have serveral users in different groups that may result a permission conflict.
    - Put or copy your files you want to to a new folder.
    - Use this tool, its easy to use for ppl that are not familiar with unix permission setup over the terminal: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6440
    - give all files recursively all permissions (for testing) (777, owner, group, others)
    - then test the copy procedure
    this should help

  • My (Snowleopard) MBP died, but I had it backed up externally with TimeMachine. I bought an Air and used Migration Assistant which worked to bring the data over.  However, I've now got two versions of "me" on Air - I only want one with all my info. Help!

I know it's generally recommended (if you're going to bring data from one machine to another) to update the OS on the source computer before transfer.  However, my MBP died unexpectedly and my information was backed up with TimeMachine in SnowLeopard.  The Air I bought as a replacement runs Lion.
I was able to use Migation Assistant to bring my info/programs/etc over...but I've now got the user set up initially (in store) with Lion when I made the purchase - and I now have a second "persona" that contains all of my backed up information from the time capsule.
Given that the Airs have (relatively speaking) smaller amounts of memory, and that I dont' want to be bouncing back and fourth between profiles, I'm wondering if it's safe to delete the "new user profile" (ie the one set up via Lion while in store) and just use and keep the "me" I brought in from the time capsule.
I've never updated a MacOS before - let alone under these circumstances, so I've got a fair amount of trepidation around the whole process.
What is the best way to wind up with one user profile, keeping all the information from my old machine and deleting anything superfluous as part of a secondary profile?
Thanks in advance for any input you can provide surrounding this process!

    Thank you!
I can't tell you how terrified I was when deleting the superfluous account...but it went just swimmingly!
