I want to move my music and photos to an external hard drive from my iMac. What external hard drive should I get?

I want to move my music and photos to an external hard drive from my iMac.  What kind of hard drive should I get?  Will it remove it from iMac and only be on external hard drive?

How to correctly move your media:
iTunes: How to move the library to an EHD
iPhoto: How to move the Library to an EHD
It is important that the External Hard Drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
And also make sure that all is working to your Satisfaction before Deleting anything Off your Mac.

  • Want to store my music and photos on TC. How?

My macbook Pro is full so i bought a time capsule to back up my computer AND to store my photos and music so I can free up memory. What's the best way to do this and still be able to access my music and photos as if they were still on my computer? Is this even possible??

I am starting a new iphoto library on my time capsule for the photos.
It works, but is very slow.
AND: please choose if you want the time capsule for active date (photos) OR back-up.
Of course, technical, you can do both, but you will want a real back-up, which is on aother place when your time capsule chrashes, burns ect....

  • Transferring music and photo's

I have a Desktop PC...Macbook Pro...Ipad..Iphone...Imac in my home.  My music and photo's are on my Macbook Pro and whenever I want to update my Iphone or Ipad I connect to to my Macbook Pro.  Now I would like to update everything from my Desktop PC.  What is the easiest way to move my music and photo's from my Macbook Pro onto my desktop PC so I can, going forward, connect my Iphone or Ipad to my Desktop PC in order to update everything.  I do also have an Icloud account.  Thank You.

Moving iTunes Music from one computer to another or an external drive - HT1449 - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449.
For iPhoto, launch iPhoto, select "photos" in the left column, then go up to "edit" in the top menu bar, and select "select all".  Now go to the top menu bar - file / export - when the export window opens, change the "jpeg quality" to maximum, and change the "file name" drop down to "use title", then click "export".  Another window opens, and you want to select "desktop", then "new folder" in the bottom left.  Name the folder, then click create.  Now click OK in the bottom right.
Once the export is finished, move the folder to an external drive, and then to the other computer.

  • I have a new iMac - how do file share my music and photos from my old mac to my new mac?

I want to transfer my music and photos from one Mac to another - but I don't want to transfer anything else - what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks

the simplest way would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in Target Disk Mode, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from /users//music on the source to /users//music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
do the same with your iPhoto library. see this support article for more information (except, you won't have to option-launch iPhoto)

  • Import music and photo library from i pad to mac book pro

i had a problem with the hard drive of my mac book pro and sold all conents. I now want to put the music and photo library and import it on the mac. it does not allow me to do it. what is the best way to do it so i have my library again on the mac books?

You should be able to copy iTunes purchased music back via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, but for music from other sources (e.g. copied from CDs), and if you don't have a copy of it anywhere else, then you will need a third-party program to copy it back from your iPad - there are some programs listed half-way down this page which should be able to copy it : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
If you've changed the hard-drive on your Mac you may also find this page for syncing to a new computer useful : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
For photos, if they were taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then on a Mac you can use Image Capture, iPhoto or Aperture to copy them off : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
To copy photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app on your iPad such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to an iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

  • Music and Photos on iPhone and iPod

I first got an iPod nano, then I bought an iPhone. I'm trying to get my iTunes music and photos onto iPhone but it won't let me. Is there a way to get music and photos on both devices? Will I have to create another iTunes account on the same computer and upload my music all over again or is there a better way? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

No. I sync three ipods and an iphone to the same itunes account and library.
How are you trying to get music on it?
You have to select the options from the tabs in itunes.
Perhaps a review of the manual would help:

  • I found an old iPod classic of mine.  It's not synced to my new MacBook Pro.  How can I get the music and photos off of it and on to my new computer?  When I plug it in to my new computer it wants to erase what is on it and transfer from my new computer.

I found an old iPod classic of mine that is synced to a computer that is long gone.  I want to get the music and photos from this old iPod onto my new computer.  Every time I hook the iPod up to my new computer it wants to delete what is on the iPod and replace with the contents of the iTunes that is currently on the new computer.  I don't want to do that.  I want to keep what is on the old iPod and transfer it to iTunes.  Any help?  Thanks!

  • Used the file transfer software from Apple to move music and photos from PC to iMac and can't find the files on iMac even though it was "successful" any help?

Used the file transfer software from Apple to move music and photos to iMac.  After several hours it was "successful" but I can't locate it on the iMac.  Any ideas for the rookie?

The music should be in iTunes and your photos should be in iPhoto. What happens if you launch those applications?
    Best of luck.

  • Can I transfer music and photos from my 17" PowerBook G4 to a new MacBook Pro?

I am planning to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks. Can I have the "Genius" at the Apple Store transfer my music and pictures from my current PowerBook to the new computer? My current computer is a 17" PowerBook G4, running OS X 10.5.8. Because of the age of my computer and software limitations I have been unable to use iCloud for anything besides my calendar and contacts.

Yes, flash drive would work fine.
If all you care about is music and photos, as you indicated earlier, then you simply need to copy the entire contents of your Music and Pictures folders from the old computer into the Music and Pictures folders on the new computer. A flash drive will work fine as long as it is big enough. If you want to also move over personal files, typically those are in your Documents folder and possibly your Desktop, so don't forgot about those.
If you want to migrate over all your emails, applications, internet and router settings, web browser favorites, bookmarks, preferences, user names and accounts, etc., then you might consider doing the full migration using Setup Assistant upon the very first boot up. Apple will do this for you, for a fee, as will almost any Apple-authorized computer store (also for a fee, but probably for a bit less than Apple would charge). You can actually do this manually, using the external drive or flash drive, and I have done that myself. But you need to know where the files are to do that properly. The Setup Assistant (which is run upon the very first boot up of the new computer) or Migration Assistant (which is run after you have booted into your new computer at least once) make it pretty easy -- the main thing you need to do is hook the computers up with a firewire cable and follow Apple's instructions; or if that is not possible, the next best thing is to make a complete backup of your old computer onto an external drive using Time Machine (or a cloning program like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) and migrate from the backup.

  • Set time capsule as my music and photo library?

    Hi there,
I have a new Time Capsule, i have made the first back up copy, and i think it goes ok.
    My question now is:
i would like to delete all my music and photos from my laptop, and set my library in the Time capsule, so i can have more room in my laptop which is a real problem right now.
Is it possible? I guess from now on, all the copies it makes will NOT have the music and photos, but in the one i alredy did they will appear, wont they? so i can set this one as my library....
    Thanks,
    Crespo

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Can i share music and photos between two users on the same machine?

How can I share my music and photos between two users on the same machine?

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!
