Hi brotherbrown,
A direct FireWire transfer (especially if it's 800 to 800) is going to be the fastest method. TimeCapsule would work, if you connect to it via Ethernet, via wireless it would be quite slow (especially if you have a large library).

You will need to use an external DVD drive to run the disc installer that came you your machine. You can also do it with another Mac using the Remote Install Max OS X app. Finely, if you have access to another computer, you could burn the install image on a USB thumb drive, boot from that, erase the drive and run the installer.

  • How do I transfer my contacts from my old Powerbook G4 to my new Macbook Pro?

how do I transfer my contacts from my old Powerbook G4 to my new one Macbook Pro?
new Macbook Pro is operating on OSX 10.8.2
When I save it as an export then try to open it on the new computer it wants me to delete all my current contacts before it will import.
    What happened to MERGING?

On the PowerBook G4, open Address Book and choose File > Back up Address Book...
Save it to your Desktop or directly to the MBP if it is already connected. Otherwise copy the Address Book backup file to the MacBook Pro. Email is also an option.
On the MacBook Pro, open (double-click) the Address Book Backup (abbu) file:
Contacts will launch and display the following:
Click Replace All which will do what it says.
Using Migration Assistant to migrate from Tiger to Mountain Lion simply does not work. Tiger to Lion works, Tiger to Mountain Lion does not. Apple does not provide specific directions regarding the use of Migration Assistant from Tiger to ML, only Tiger to Lion.

  • I would like to migrate my idvd from my old Mac powerbook to my new Macbook pro? How to do it? Can someone show me the steps?

my new Macbook Pro does not have idvd and my old one has, so would like to transfer my idvd from my old mac to my new one. Can i do that? and how? thanks.

Right, I finally managed to get it sorted out.
iCloud only accept version 3.0 vcards, and the one I was using were version 2.1 so that's why it wasn't picking it up. So the easy way to get that sorted out is, use a gmail account.
I know you don't wanna do it because you think it's too much hassle and stuff, but trust me it only takes 5 minutes and that's it.
    1. Create a Gmail Account.
    2. Export your Old VCard files to the Gmail Account.
    3. Now Import them from Gmail to your PC again.
And, that's it, that's just makes the new imported version in 1 file contains your all contacts in version 3.0. Now you can just upload that on icloud and then sync it with your iphone.
That's what I did and it worked, and I am sure if you wanna replace this file in the Contacts folder under your User Account in Windows and then try to sync Contacts in Tunes, it should work, but as I said, I did it with iCloud and it worked for me. So aye, that's pretty much it. Phewwww..
Been searching for it for the whole day and it took 5 minutes in the end, badass...
Anyway, don't lose hope and always Google for everything!

  • HT4889 how do you import itunes and photos from my old mac book to my new macbook air

I have just purchased a new mac book air and want to transfer my itunes and photos form my old to new. Is there any easy way to do this as most of the tutorials seem to want to move everything and my old mac book is 512GB but my new air is 256GB solid state. I do not want to move everything ( except for itunes) but it seems to be difficult to select bits and pieces. Also is there a need to transfer all the user information form my old to new or can I start fresh? And can you still use the old mac and thenew mac with the same itunes library?

    Hi pjktl,
The document that you are referencing shows screen shots under the Firewire/Thunderbolt section that shows how you can selectively migrate parts of the Macintosh HD. Skip down to that section and see if that is what you are looking for.
I don't see why you can't have the same library on both Macs, but I don't know if there is any way to keep them in sync, and you need to select one of them to sync your iTunes content with (this does not include Photos, as they are kept in the iPhone library. My husband and I sync our devices with the iTunes library on his Mac, but sync our photos with the iPhoto library on my Mac. You just have to make sure you have the device profile screens set up correctly for each device in each library).
Also, you can set up the User information as new on the new Mac
    Cheers,

  • Starting up problems from an old boot drive in a new mac pro

Just purchased a refurb mac pro last weekend through the apple store. I took my old drive my my first mac pro and was trying to usee it for the boot drive, That machine did not come with snow leopard. I did upgrade it to 10.6.6. When I start up from that drive in the new mac pro it was either starting up real slowly or starting up and would not give me a cursor or. On some occasion I would get a translucent blue huge on the screen. Or I could get a clear screen but nothing would happen if I clicked to open anything. I called support and we reinstalled the on the old drive. I seemed stable and was booting properly from the old drive. Then I upgraded to 10.6.6 again. We used the software the new machine came with for this process. I maybe used the new boot drive for maybe 50 seconds. Apple support wishes for me to go through the process of isolating elements. I've been running the new drive since yesterday. Everything is working well. Except after letting it run for a period of time yesterday got s grey screen after it went to sleep. We'll see what happens with that today. I do not know if it's coincidence or not but the old system went hicky after I started up Paralllels desktop.I'm using Parallelsto run Playon. I'm wondering if Parallels or the xp emulation machine I'm running with it is still trying to read the old macpro ? It did work however. I'm just curious that it's altering something in the Mac osx ? Another thing should I subtract other wirleeless choice devices on the old drive's system ? The old macpro had wireless but the module was installed aftermarket by a mac store.
    Thanks

Hard to follow your steps and thoughts. Maybe re-read and cut it into actual steps.
Always clone a system so you have a bootable backup image.
Make sure your software and drivers are compatible.
2010s boot into 64-bit kernel mode by default.
Apple still sells 2009s also on Specials page.
Your old Mac Pro wouldn't come with 10.6 unless it came out in Sept 2009 or later.
Is Parallels current? Is it attached to Windows partition or VM only? does it care that it is running on new hardware? that usually is a non-starter.
New Mac is also a good time to do thorough spring house cleaning. Clean install all the applications and drivers.
Pull your old drive out. The only use for it would be to run Setup Assistant to import your home account prefs.
The "new" refurbished hard drive is still in same state it was in when you got it?
Sleep issue. you may have external devices or 3rd party drivers or bad cable somewhere.
    Wireless?
At this point I doubt I can read between the lines.

  • Does Firefox accept suggestions for becoming a better browser (than the others)?

Well, does it? And if so, then where should I post the suggestion? I repeat, this is browser related. (First time on this forum and I'm just trying not to post in the wrong place).
    Thanks

Thanks Diego and john99. Since you're obviously nice and knowledgeable guys ready to help, I'd love to hear what you think about my suggestion:
Here is the problem that EVERYBODY browsing the Internet has: They are reading an article which is undated (billions of them online) and don’t have any date reference when the author of the article says things like “last month that happened” or “next week will fix it” (in the reader’s mind: “last month means what month and what year?!”, same for “next week”, “two years ago” and so on).
Now it is obvious that some grandma, or even some knowledgeable dude (in a rush) are highly unlikely to do the following:
    (1) Right-click on the article s/he’s reading (in whatever browser);
    (2) Click on “View page source”;
    (3) CTRL + F
    (4) Enter “date” in CTRL+F’s search box;
    (5) Scroll thorough all returns for “'''date'''” including those from such words like consoli'''date''', up'''date''', vali'''date''' and so on until s/he finds '''Date'''Published
    (6) Then do the math for “22 days ago they disappeared into the jungle”. Now I’m not complaining about point (6) but it comes handy in my proposal for Firefox to become the most appreciated browser just by fixing a detail that everybody ignored so far.
All steps (1) to (6) can be easily solved by a programmer (working for Firefox) with just a few lines of code. If you do so, do it the elegant way – to make sure you make a difference and please the billions of frustrated online readers -- as follows (I’ll be brief, since everybody that’s eyeing this forum instead of watching ‘Desperate Housewives’ will instantly understand what I’m talking about):
In an article that someone reads in your browser, identify and highlight (by using a certain font/color, or whatever else that will become common knowledge) the words related to a date (like “3 months from now”, “2 weeks ago” and so on), so this words, when hovered over => a tooltip inside which the math is done (taking into account the date the article was published) in an Excel (or similar) fashion and displaying exactly what “2 weeks ago” or “3 months from now” means.
For instance if the article is written/published on 9/13/2013 then this is what it’ll be displayed: for “4 days ago”: 9/9/2013, for “next month”: Oct. 2013 and so on; the user can customize the format of the dates displayed in the tooltip.
By elegantly fixing this very annoying online reality Firefox will have the most satisfied customers.

  • I have just purchased my first Apple computer, a MacBook Pro, running Lion (10.7.4).  My wife bought her MacBook Pro six months ago.  I had data from my old PC transferred to my new MacBook, but, for some reason, my superuser ID comes up as my wife.

I have just purchased a MacBook Pro.  My wife's MacBook Pro is less than a year old.  When I start up my new computer, it thinks I am my wife and gives me the option of logging on as my wife or as a guest user.  How do I correct this misidentification?  Thanks.  [email protected]

This sounds like you may have migrated in Setup Assistant from her MBP?
EDIT: (Or whatever you migrated from the PC had her account data)
I also think you mean your login ID, not the Superuser, unless you've enabled root. In that case it would say "root"
Let's try it easy first. Create a new account and make it an Admin. Name it your name or whatever. This will be your account. Next login as your wife and move ehatever Documents you want from that account into /Users/Shared.
Now log back into your own account and drag the items from the Shared folder into your Documents folder.
If this works and you no longer need your wife's account on the Mac you can delete it in System Preferences > Users&Groups.

  • How do I add my Outlook PST files from my old Windows PC to my new MacBook Pro?

Sorry newbie MBP user here I did a search but couldn't find anything, although I would guess others who have migrated over from the windows world might have had this question:
Just purchased a new MBP w/Retina display and I before I wipe my current windows laptop, I want to move all of my saved PST email files over to my new MBP as well as my saved documents.
I have saved them on a USB thumb drive but dont know how to move them over to my MBP and save them in my mail file as well as my docs into?
    TIA!

    dear Gents,
i have the same issue, i do not want to use Microsoft outlook, i want to use mac mail.
i have a PST file which its size is around 18 GB, i used PST Converter PRO, but it converted the PST file to a folder contans subfolder and files, the size of these folders are 68 MB.
i tired to import this new folder to mac mail, it was giving a message that will be discplayed under folder name "Import", but unfortunately, there was nothing added.
