I would like to upgrade my operating system, but still have Leopard and don't know how to make the "leap" to newer software.

I have a makbook pro, running with Leopard (10.5.8).  I know that I missed both Lion and Snow Leopard and want to know the best way to upgrade.  Do I need to buy both in addition to Mountain Lion?  Will my computer even run Mountain Lion?  I need step by step instructions because everyone I talk to just says "Just upgrade it" Thanks.

Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Are my applications compatible?

  • HT1338 I have a Mac Tiger version and I would like to upgrade my Operating System.

Can this be done by downloading it directly or do I have to bring in my computer to an apple store?

Your computer profile information is confusing.  You say you are running Tiger yet your profile says your computer is running Lion which is three versions beyond Tiger.  Which version are you running?
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window then "About This Mac", and tell us what it says for "version".  Now continues to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
You can do any system upgrade yourself.  The ease with which is can be done is more a matter of which version your really need.  If you are indeed running Lion then upgrading to Mountain Lion can be done online for $20.  If you are indeed running Tiger and are running an older computer that can only go to Leopard then you will have to do a lot of hunting for a copy of Leopard and be prepared to spend a lot of money buying it (maybe $100+?)

Without more information, it would be anyone's guess - you need to post your model number, and/or model identifier (available in System info in About your Mac), as well as the model year.

  • I have upgraded to 8.0 and the version number comes up correct except in most sites it says I'm running 3.5.6?? I have continually upgraded and don't know how to make websites see the upgrade.

Everytime there is an upgrade I install it. My browser says I'm using 8.0 and that my browser is up-to-date. However, when I try to install Firebug for 8.0 or any other add on it says I'm using 3.5.6. Even gmail is saying that my browser is out dated! How can I get my browser to be truly updated??

  • Upgraded from Vista ultimate to Win. 7. Don't know how to install the tv tuner

I upgraded from Vista ultimate to Win. 7. When I tried to install the TV tuner, nothing seemed to happen.

Save the TV Tuner driver to the desk top and use 7zip to extract the files. There may be a folder there named SRC. Open that and look for the Windows install icon.
If you give me your full model number and the version of W7 (32 or 64 bit) you are running I can help you further with this manual installation procedure.

  • I upgraded to firefox 4 but it is not suitable for my version of Mac Os and don't know how to get the previous version of firefox back!

I downloaded the latest version of Firefox (ie 4) on my Apple laptop, but the fact that it is "unsuitable for (my version of) Mac Os " was not revealed to me until I had already replaced the previous version which was suitable. I don't know how to retrieve the version I was using.

The latest versions of Firefox require at least Mac OS X 10.5 and an Intel processor. You can revert to Firefox 3.6.xx for Mac 10.4 by downloading the installer from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

    From what I read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2011/06/06/lion-...u-2-gb-of-ram/
s long as they already have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed in it.All a person needs to do with that type of iMac is to upgrade/max out their Ram. They claim that an Interl iMac with Core 2 Duo is all that is needed, as long as it has OS 10.6.8 installed. They say you don`t need  the "Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor"
But I wonder about the RAM speed, the iMac 2.33Ghz uses DDR2 SDRAM,  which I believe is rated at 667Mhz. Lion maybe installed but it might be problems running smoothly or not?
Did some quick checking and the iMacs apple is selling this year use 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM.
The only thing to do is to make sure you have a good back-up, Install your RAM and install Snow Leo, then wait a couple of hours and install Lion.
    Good Luck

  • I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive

I just upgraded my operating system on my MacBook Air and now my laptop won't detect my Toshiba 1T external hard drive, how to solve this problem?

Try some of the troubleshooting steps outlined below:
    Troubleshooting an external hard drive
    > Unplug the hard drive, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in
    > Restart the computer
    > Unplug any other peripherals from the computer
    > Plug it into a different USB port
If none of those steps work, see if it is recognized in Disk Utility.
Checking a disk with Disk Utility
To check a disk using Disk Utility, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
    > Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
    > Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
    > Go Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once Disk Utility is opened, check to see if your external HD appears on the sidebar. If it doesn't appear at first, try the troubleshooting steps above again while leaving Disk Utility open, each time checking to see if the external HD appears.

  • I have Logic Pro 8.0.2 and would like to upgrade. I'm running OS Lion on a 2010 MacB Pro. What is the best option? Logic Pro 9 App or Logic Studio? Can't find upgrade price. Or should I just stay with Logic 8?

Same here, I have Logic Studio 8 and wouldn't mind staying with that version, except that the installer won't run on my new Macbook Pro as PowerPC apps are no longer supported. That's the message I get in any case.
I use to run Logic on a 2006 Macbook Pro.
I guess that makes me a very unhappy Apple user! I've been using Logic from the Emagic days, bought every upgrade only to see Apple kill what used to be one of the best Pro Audio application. Imagine if they had done the same to Photoshop, there would be a lot of unhappy designers out there
Paying the full price for years to slowly see your daily app go down in price & efficiency until it's given away at $199 for semi pro users. Well, at least ProTools is stil alive & kicking so I guess that's the way forward now.
This is coming from someone that never ever used a Windows machine to make music! Life is good still!

If you bought Lion from the App Store, you can't legally or practically transfer it, because it's tied to your Apple ID. Reinstall the original software from the discs that came with the machine.

I have my iMac G3 set up with three partitions like you are proposing.
I'd recommend getting virtual box on your new Mac.  You can install the latest Linux version easier this way.
The problem is finding a PPC distro you like.  I forget how I configured the Linux boot manager, yaboot.  I may have skipped it or had it installed in the linux partition.
    Ubuntu
The Ubuntu folks stopped supporting the power PC a while back.  You will have to install an older version of Ubuntu.
You may to modify xorg.conf. See:

    Mac G3 modem install Howto

You may have adjust adjust xorg.conf. See these instructions:

I was able to get the last official versions of Ubuntu working on my G3 600.
    6.10 Edgy Eft,
    6.06 Dapper Drake
I used the alternate install and did the alterations noted above.
These versions are listed at the very bottom of the page.

I just tried to reset my iPad...then couldn't reset it.  I don't know how to install the operating system on it again

    Is this how you reset?
    1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together)
    2. For about 10 seconds
    3. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)
    4. Ignore the red slider

My ipad 3 is frozen on the plug into itunes page - it won't turn off or on - just stuck. I have tried to follow advice I have found on these pages but I don't know how to connect the ipad to my mac (the advice is to connect ipad to mac and there is no usb port on an ipad). If anyone could help it would be appreciated. Going nuts.

I think you should probably also read the iPad User Guide. You didn't say what version of iOS your iPad is running, so here's the links to both the iOS 6 and iOS 7 (PDF) versions:
