ICal 3.0.7 not working

Having done the update to OS 10.5.7 I discovered the same issue I had in a previous update (perhaps to 10.5.6? Can't recall exactly), that being that iCal does nothing. That is to say, it starts up but never loads any calendars. Upon trying to Quit iCal, it never quits. It does not 'hang' (Bringing up the Force Quit window does not show any 'not responding', nor does Activity Monitor give any clue that anything is wrong.), it simply just never quits.
To try and get my calendars back I first tried a 'Reset' from MobileMe, then a Restore from Time Machine. In both cases, nothing. On restarting iCal, no calendars.
I then removed the iCal plist file, which also did nothing.
Having been down this path before, and having spent considerable time mucking about last time it occurred, I did not try anything else but instead went straight to:
The solution, as it was last time this occurred, was to use Time Machine to Restore iCal vers. 3.0.2, which continues to work perfectly.
Any one else seen this behavior or have any ideas?
**Note in my specs I state 'Other OS', that is only because the Discussions page does not yet recognize 10.5.7**

William,
No, iCal is dead across the board for all users.
That indicates a system reinstallation of some type will be the only way to correct your problem.
As to the problem 'having been introduced by the Time Machine retrograde...', au contraire. It is only by using Time Machine that I've been able to get iCal working, albeit not with the current version.
Perhaps I could have used better semantics than "introduced by the Time Machine retrograde," but the fact remains that if you are using an older version of iCal your system is not properly updated. Although I may not able to reconstruct the versions, or all of the improvements that iCal has gone through since 3.0.2, this short summary describes iCal changes described by Apple in these Updates:
OS X 10.5.7 iCal
▪ Improves overall reliability with CalDav.
▪ Improves reliability when automatically syncing with MobileMe.
OS X 10.5.5 iCal
▪ Updates iCal to more accurately handle repeating events.
▪ Improves performance when choosing meeting attendees.
▪ Resolves an issue in which the "Refresh All" option may be dimmed ("grayed out") in the contextual menu for certain calendars.
▪ Fixes issues with read-only calendars.
▪ Addresses an issue that prevents an invitee from moving an event to a different calendar.
▪ Resolves an issue with syncing published calendars.
The choice to remain with 3.0.2, or attempt further Updates remains yours.

  • ICal Service Data Recovery not working.

    Hi,
After upgrading to 10.5.4 (not sure yet if this is the cause), my iCal service stopped working, with CPU on the Xserve getting maxed out whenever it ran, as per the earlier post in this forum. Following suggestions in that thread, I used a Time Machine backup I have of the server HD to recover the most recent copy of the Library/Calendar/Documents folder using the following command,so as to preserve permissions and ownerships etc:
    sudo ditto -V -rsrc <source directory> <destination dir>
The data copied across fine, and when I point the iCal service to use the new data location and start up the service, all the data is there, but no new events can be created, as the client app (mail 3.0) reports...
Request for "New Event" in "James Glendinning" in account "James Glendinning" failed.
    The server responded with
    "HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error"
Looking at the error log for the iCal service, it's full of stuff I don't understand, which is logged as soon as the service is started whilst pointing to the new data location:

I'm particularly perplexed by the last line, which indicates that ....principals/ _uids__ location does not exist, when I can clearly see it from within finder, and it appears to have all the permissions intact.
Is there a way I can get the iCal service to keep all the calender entry data it has, and rebuild any of the other bits it needs on the fly? Or any other ideas at all?

OK, great, I tried that on the busted data location, and it still didn't work, I think there's some corrupt dblite files of something. In any case, I've given up, instead I've created a new store, and set the permissions as you've described, and am rebuilding each calendar individually, which is a pain, but I needed it working asap.
I'll see how the new data location holds up with this new data and post results.
    Thanks for your help....

  • Syncing my iCal calendars in iTunes - Not working after installing Leopard

    * I have tried researching this as much as possible before posting this, so I apologize if a solution has already been posted for this issue!
After recently installing Leopard, I have noticed that when I try to sync my iCal calendars to my (5th generation) iPod (using iTunes) that the only calendars showing up as available to sync with are "Home" and "Work". I do not have a "home" or "work" calendar in my iCal. In fact all of my calendars in iCal appear to be working fine, however, I am unable to see any of them when I go to my iTunes to sync them to my iPod. I tried syncing my iPod with the "Home" and "work" calendars, but they are empty. I used to be able to sync with no problem whatsoever. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks a lot for any helpful advise!

    JHeinz,
Glad to hear that contacts are working again.
Other troubleshooting steps involve refreshing the iTunes and iCal plist files.
    1. Quit iTunes and find the com.apple.iTunes.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the file to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check iTunes for expected behavior.
    2. Quit iCal and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Additionally find the Calendar Cache file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars folder. Drag both of these files to your Desktop, log out/in or restart and check for desired behavior.
I listed these as separate steps to keep from changing too many things at one time. If you are dissatisfied with the results you can always return the original plist files to their original locations.

  • Since upgrading to Lion, iCal event invitations are not working well.

Since upgrading to Lion last week, I am having problems with sending iCal event invitations to large groups of people (say 10 people or more). Although my iMac, iPhone, and iPad iCals show that invitations have been sent, only a few of those invited have actually received event invite emails.
Has anyone else experienced this? If so, any insight into the problem or solution?
    Thanks in advance.

    If you want.
or maybe install Snow Leopard using the disc it came on with my Mac and just set it up from a Time Machine Backup on my external hard drive (since it works under SL)?
Did you install Lion on an empty partition, or did you upgrade Snow Leopard?  If you upgraded, I'd not recommend erasing it, since your backups are apparently gone.  It's doubtful Snow Leopard will recognize them.
It's not just backups on the drive either, there are other important things on there, so why won't they show?
Mixing Time Machine backups and other data is not a good idea.  See #3 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  It sounds like the whole disk is corrupted.
I just really don't understand how this happened. Could it not be an issue with WD because they haven't issued firmware to support Lion yet?
If this is a simple external HD, connected by USB or FireWire, no, unless you installed some of WD's software on it.  That shouldn't prevent it from being seen at all, but anything's possible.

This parameter only tells you that the change is sourced from F4 input help, not direct input, so it is pure for your knowledge but has nothing to do with the event triggering itself.

There are very long delays before the program responds (e.g. 10s after typing, the content show up). Generally my Air seems to be slowing down in it's second year, but nothing so bad as iCal. Are there known issues with the new iCal? Is there anything I can do to rectify this? I would like to use this program a lot - & presently rely on it to schedule my work, but I can't even create a new event anymore - the program just freezes.
I've been on macs my entire life & this is the first time I've felt that the product quality was really lacking ... Any assistance to sort out the issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Best,
    Rax

As an update - the freezing I reported is actually just extended delays (perhaps all freezing is?!) - if I leave the program 10mins-2h+ it will start responding again, but it is hardly usuable.
    Best,
    Rax

  • Ical to Iphone alarm not working

Maybe i have a bad combination.  I'm using the iPhone 3 running OS 3.1.3 since 4 slowed the poor little down so much.
I have iCal events which i have no problems syncing between several laptops and the iPhone, but I can't seem to get the thing to pop up an alarm on the iPhone.  I can get it to do it on iCal.
So I've tried Growl and OmniGrowl... first i started w/ the growlit.scpt and tried to get the event in iCal to read that script but I got an error that says connection is invalid... then I bought Omnigrowl thinking I needed something with the word Omni in it... :-)  Got other pop ups on my laptop, but not on my iPhone.
Any suggestions?  is there a "start over" button?
    thanks
    g

Did you have any luck solving this problem? I have the same issue too, but I have an iPhone 4. Would greatly appreciate if you had any feedback. Thank you.

  • ICal Search (in Leopard) not working?

Doing a search in Leopard's iCal appears to be broken. Certain events (e.g., I search for "Sick day" to see the sick days I've taken) don't appear in the search results. This worked in Tiger flawlessly for me.
Actually ... I went to the Apple Store in Chicago last night, and wanted to see if it was just my machine. I noticed that the sample calendar loaded in the demo Macs have a recurring event called "Gym." I did a search for "Gym" - no results found.
Yeah, I deleted the Index file in the Prefs - no such luck, either.

  • IMac iCal hide completed reminders not working

On my iMac in iCal when I uncheck "Show All Completed Reminders" it does not hide the completed reminders in the reminders list.

See the answer in this post.

  • ICloud/iCal meeting request does not work

I currently use iCal/iCloud on my Lion MacBook Pro.
In the past, using MobileMe, I would be able to send meeting requests to WinTel/Exchange recipients. The email that the recipient would receive gave them the options to accept, decline or Tentative. These were always useless and misleading options as choosing on these did nothing to add to the recipients calendar. It was only a way to notify me, the sender, of their response. The recipient would have to take the additional step of double clicking on the attached .ics file to add to their calendar.  If the recipient did not choose one of the three options but double clicked on the .ics file, I was never notified of their response.
But things have gotten worse with iCloud. Now, the recipient receives the same email, with the three options that now do nothing, but when the recipient double clicks on the .ics file, it shows that the recipient is the creator of the event and cannot add to their calendar or modify. THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITH THE REQUEST.
I just had a Chat with support and was informed that any recipient that I want to send a meeting request to MUST have an iCloud account and have the panel installed. This is not only cumbersome but in most cases not doable. Some of my meeting requests are to recipients in corporate environments and have restrictions on sites and apps.
How is Apple to be taken serious in the business environment with these types of restrictions?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thank you for your quick feedback.  Maybe my situation is a  little different, since I am on an Exchange 2010 server myself.  My "accepted" does not even get mailed out. And when I receive an "accepted" mail, iCal and/or the server do not recognize it.
I talked to the Apple support yesterday on their hotline and they claimed they never heard about it. Whereas our IT department, who is in charge for many thousand users, is also in touch with Apple directly and says that they have several users with this issue....
Anyway, did you activate in both iCal and Mail.app that calendar data are retrieved automatically?
Below some screen shots. Since I have all these issues, I have turned it OFF, you might need to turn this ON.

  • Ical alarms alarm does not work correctly

Hey I got a problem whit ical.
when I set iCal to send me an email with the up coming event, I never receive the mail. But when I look in the "sent" there is an email allegedly sent to my mail. I just never received it. Why?
if there is anyone out there who can help I would really appreciate
    - Simon

I have the exact same issue and haven't found a solution yet. This bug (if it is a bug) makes iCal completely useless.

  • Uploaded mountain lion and iCal and reminders are not working, can I reinstall if purchased online?

They keep showing program loading like they have stalled, and then turn off.

I made sure I backed up on my external hard drive back up before downloaded.  Everything hung up for so long, from trying to upload iCloud to the other problems my Mac got VERY HOT, so I shut it down for tonight and when we are both cool in mind ( the Mac and me) I will restart and tell you if it worked.  Thanks

  • What do I do with my iWeb site on Mobile Me? The iCal calendar already doesn't work at the moment.

I am so behind the times....sorry.  I know Apple now has iCloud.  So where does that leave me with an iWeb designed website and it's hosted on mobile me????   The iCal calendar is already not working for some reason.  Is it true that the iWeb program is going away all together? Is there no way to transfer it to the iCloud?  Why would they come out with iLife 11 with iWeb if they have no intentions of continuing iWeb?????  HELP!!!!!  I have to make sure the site is active. Do I have to redo the entire frikin calendar on google?
    Some one give me answers...Thanks!

Well, it leaves you still being able to host your site on MobileMe until June next year.  iCloud and MobileMe will exist together until this time.  This gives you time to find alternative hosting for your site.
iCloud will NOT be providing hosting, which is exactly why Apple gave MMe users plenty of notice that this would be happening so that they could prepare and move to other alternative hosting.
What you need to do is have a look at web hosts such as GoDaddy and HostExcllence and purchase a domain name from them as well as hosting and you can upload your website here with no problems.  Either publish to a local folder or use the iWeb built in ftp to upload.
iWeb is an application and if you have it you can still use it.  It works with Lion and Snow Leopard.  No you don't have to re-build.  Continue to use iWeb.
Yes, iLife 11 was brought out, but did you not notice that iWeb and iDVD were not updated as part of this?  They upgraded GarageBand, iPhoto and iMovie but not the others, so even though it is iLife 11, it is still iWeb 09.
Your website will be okay hosted on MobileMe until June next year and after that you'll need to upload to another host.  iWeb will continue and you can still use it - you don't need to re-build all your sites.

  • ICal server will not work

I am running a small network on a MacPro running OS X server 10.5.4 with 2 mac clients and 2 windows clients. The OS X server was installed by an apple specialist but it is still not working properly and I find it hard to believe that it is a bug is the software as it seems to be a fundamental problem which most people would have encountered.
Each user has their home directories stored on a separate drive on the server and iCal server is running. However, when a Mac client logs into the network they iCal does not work properly. It either will not show any calendars or if it does then a new event cannot be entered.
Below is an extract from the client message log from rebooting the machine. The first problems with iCal seem to occur at 1:20:48:

Once loaded iCal does not respond and a "force quit" is the only option.
I have looked at the logs in Server Admin and I can't seem to see any problems at about the same time.
I would be grateful if someone could let me know whether this is a bug with the software or whether there is a solution. For the time being, the mac users are having to use portable home directories in order to allow them to use iCal.
    <Edited by Moderator>

    Hi
I've not long ago spotted it. It is a longish log. I would sort out that problem anyway because it can't be good for that user.
What needs to happen is a sampling of a the log server side when the problems occur for the clients. It would be a good idea if you posted a little more about how the server is configured. Are you using Server Preferences to administer the Server by any chance? What is the result of issuing this command from terminal:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Post the result. Did the apple engineer configure internal DNS & DHCP Services to accommodate the web and ical services? Is the web service running? Are you using virtual domains? Are the client macs using the Server to resolve DNS?
As you can see lots of questions. If you are using Server Preferences then I'm going to have to stop trying to assist you. Please don't think there is anything wrong with your server because you are using the application, because there is not. Neither is there anything wrong with the choices made by the original guy. It's just I don't deal with anything other than Advanced. I have little knowledge of Server Preferences. Please don't be tempted to 'convert' to Advanced thinking it may 'improve' matters. It's just as likely it will make things worse.
Consider getting the original guy back in and having him do it for you again. Who knows you may find things will go a lot smoother this time?
    Tony

  • Search in iCal in 10.5.2 Not Working?

I upgraded to 10.5.2 this week and was posting a future event in iCal (several years out) and wanted to see if it posted correctly. So, I clicked in the search field in the upper right corner of the window and typed in the text I entered for the event. The columnar listing area appeared at the bottom of the window, but displayed no contents. I then manually went to the future date and found the event just fine.
In Tiger when I entered text in the search field, the columnar area at the bottom of the screen actually listed the results of my search, but I can get no results in Leopard.
I searched this forum for comments on this issue and found a similar thread from last fall, but none of the suggestions made at that time work for me in 10.5.2.
Can anyone here confirm that iCal is not displaying search results for them? I'd like to know if it's my system, or the application itself.
I find it's working on my upgraded G5 iMac, but not on this new Intel iMac.
    Thanks for listening...

I had a similar problem. The symptoms were:
    - Search in iCal did not work at all (no result, what so ever, returned)
    - Search in Spotlight worked (the same search that did not return anything in iCal would return To-Dos and events in Spotlight)
I started by backing up and restoring, but this did not work.
I then read a lot about potential solutions involving quite extreme things (such as reinstalling Leopard). I then found out that I could solve this issue by simply exporting each calendar and then reimporting them without deleting anything.
For example, I had a "Home" calendar that I exported. I then chose "Import" then picked the exported "Home" calendar and chose my "Home" calendar in iCal as destination calendar. I feared that I would end up with duplicate events and to-dos, but no, iCal is smart.
Once this is done, my search in iCal started to work again and searching items on this calendar would return correct results (as did spotlight).
I then did the same with all my other calendars, and voilà!
    Hope this helps
