ICal Server Utility...any point?

I've got our calendar server up and running. Its an OD replica from our primary OD master. Workgroup manager shows all my users and groups.
Since we have multiple boardrooms which need to be bookable I am trying to use the iCal Server Utility. To setup locations and resources, I had to authenticate using my OD admin password instead of my admin user account which I though was weird. And obviously had to change the authentication to password instead of kerberos in the preferences.
So I have my 3 boardrooms setup in the iCal server utility, so now what do I do to book a boardroom? The ical server admin .pdf isn't exactly clear.
On my laptop I have my ical account all setup and seems to be working fine. I can invite people and even groups which is great. But how do I book the boardroom? It certainly isn't listed in invitees when I try to type in 'boardroom' nothing auto completes.
I have also added our video camera as a bookable resource but this also doesn't show up under invitees?
Documentation is light on the ground and the built in 'ical server utility' is no help either. Anyone have any experience?

New problem. I see the the Locations created previously on both the Replica and the OD Master using the iCal Server Utility. But I can't add the permissions using:
sudo calendarservermanageprincipals --add-write-proxy groups:groupname locations:mediaroomdownstairs
I get
Invalid principal ID: locations:mediaroomdownstairs
So I thought I would just delete both locations and try it again. But I get Permission Denied error in the iCal Server Utility. Tried it on both the OD Replica running the iCal server and on the OD Master since I have to authenticate as the diradmin I thought it might stored on there.
So then using the tips listed here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10403050
Opened up Workgroup Manager and in Preferences I turned on 'Show all records', and went to the 'bullseye' tab. From the drop down I can see my Resource (Video Camera) that I added in iCal Server Utility this morning but under Places there are no listings of the two meeting rooms. I tried this on both the OD Master and the Replica running the iCal server.
So that explains why I get the invalid principals. But the question is, how do I either delete the old records when I can't find them on either server, or modify them to allow read and write proxies.
Please help as its driving me crazy.

  • Can't edit or delete iCal Server Utility records

I created two records in iCal Server Utility when I first set it up (one location and one resource).
For some reason, now I cannot edit or delete either of those records. I get the message "An error has occurred. You don't have permission to modify this record."
My preferences are set to connect via password (as opposed to Kerberos).
    What am I missing?

  • ICal Server was working great then...BAMF! No account information found...

Our iCal server is failing to authenticate, although the Open Directory Services on the server appear to be working. Originally the server was bound to the domain and pointed to the Open Directory server for the main company (which ultimately is probably a good idea).
    However
That was switched so that our server is now it's own Open Directory Master (although DNS still points to the right place).
Any chance this could have royally screwed things up in the bowels of the authentication preferences?
Whenever trying to start an iCal account on our server I'm getting this error (NOTE that iCal server worked great for a day before BAMF! Error city)
    Account information not found
Request to the server http://myserver.domain.com:8008/principals/users/username failed (code 30).
the following error log shows itself from iCal server. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated

  • ICal 10.6 client no longer syncing with 10.5 iCal server

Searched the forums and haven't found anyone with an answer yet.
We upgraded all our laptops to 10.6. The server is still at 10.5, running CalDAV server.
Since the upgrade of the iCal clients, they are no longer accessing the iCal server. Any ideas what settings need to be tweaked in the iCal clients to have them see and read/write to their accounts on the 10.5 iCal server?
    Thanks
    Jason

the same is happening to me.
All my cals have been syncing just fine. Upgraded my iphone os5. upgraded lion on laptop. And for some reason, now i'm opening ical today and trying to edit, i am suddenly getting URL errors. Also i cannot find a way in the new ical (with lion) to unsubscribe from things.
My iphone seems to be updating ok as it's syncing from the google cal server... but if i want to add or edit anything to my google cals in ical, it's not letting me do anything.
    Any ideas anyone ?

  • 3party calendar apps and invitations with iCal Server - Mac/PC enviro

We are a mixed OS company with macs and PCs. The macs are currently using iCal client software which is working great. However, our PC users are using Thunderbird-Lightning extension. In iCal or the web GUI, users get an invitation notification to accept or deny. Currently, with our thunderbird-lightning clients when they receive the meetings, it is automatically populated in their calendars without the option to accept or deny. Is there a way to fix this? Also when thunderbird-lightning clients try to email members to a meeting it will try to send to the UID and not the users email address, even it is defined in osx workgroup mng. Lastly we would like to add email notifications for all meetings, if possible.
What other windows calendar clients seem to work best with iCal Server? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
    10.6.1 SL server, ical server.
    10.5 and 10.6 mac users
Win XP with Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 + Lightning 0.9 users

    Hi!
Have you had a look at eMClient? works with IMAP and CalDAV on Widows, even Windows 7, and is free.

I was having the same exact problem, and fixed it by either:
    1) Reordering the search policy in directory utility so that LDAP was ahead of AD
    2) Changing the authentication method within the iCal Server Utility to Password (it was set to kerberos).
I have been doing battle with kerberos, iCal, and AD for the past few weeks. A lot of trial and error has gone into this process, so I'm sorry I can't be more specific...
    Good Luck.

  • Can't allocate any users to use iCal Server

Have successfully set up 10.6.1 server. DNS and Open Directory both OK. iCal service is running on default port 8008 and is using the default server dns name.
The problem we're having is that in Workgroup Manager we cannot allocate a user to use iCal. Under the Advanced settings tab for a user where you enable calendaring for the user the pull down menu only shows "No calendar host selected", the configured iCal server is not displayed.
This has occurred on three separate fresh installs on three separate boxes.
    Any ideas appreciated!

That doesn't really make any sense. I can connect iCal 10.5.x clients to the iCal 10.6 test server just fine and they pulled down test data. I plugged in account details and connected to the users iCal server calendar account.
Perhaps you misunderstood them? The guy I spoke with told me that you manage almost all calendar data on the wiki/mypage tool now and not in workgroup manager. Users can access their calendar on mypage, groups manage their calendars via the wiki. It may not be ideal (I would have preferred using workgroup manager for this stuff) but it seems to work. You can also manage delegation to your calendar via the iCal client. If something specific for you isn't working, it'd probably be better to open a thread on these forums and post details if a specific feature isn't working so people can help you.
The only feature I really find lacking with this web method of management is that you can't really have a user without that user having a calendar (and having access to that calendar). The SACL only prevents them from connecting via iCal client but they can still connect via the mypage tool.
Also, 10.6 is a new server version and 10.5 had many of these same issues (perhaps more). Either you have this on a test server and you wait it out and just report fixes to Apple or you jumped the gun and installed it on a production server at which point you accepted the risk of a new server OS. Doing so on client systems is one thing (they're easily rolled back), servers is a completely different matter and should be handled with care. Obviously 10.5.x server matured enough for you to want to use it so 10.6 likely will as well so just bide your time on a test server and try to improve the release by reporting bugs or roll back to 10.5 and continue to use it until you're ready to jump to 10.6.
In short, as of now, the "enable calendaring on this host" has nothing to do with whether a user can access iCal services on a 10.6.1 host. If you create a user in workgroup manager, the current behavior is that they now have at a bare minimum, a web calendar. If you enable the SACL for iCal, I believe you can limit access via the iCal client but they'd still have web access. If this behavior is poor (I believe it is and would prefer more fine grained control) then make sure and report it.

  • Asking again: any fixes for http:/1.1 300 and 500 errors in iCal-Server?

    Hi there
I've set up several OS X servers in the last few months, most of them with ical services up and running. Quite everything works smooth, but most customers experience sooner or later errors like
http:/1.1 300... (mostly with repeating events, which seem to be buggy in iCal&CalDAV already for a long time)
    http:/1.1 500...
neither are there any relevant entries in the log, nor does it occur on a regular base - in fact, we can observe these errors all 2 or 3 weeks or so. Stopping an restarting of iCal services usually fixes them. DNS is set up perfectly well, including the SRV-entries.
What about you? Do we just have to live with these errors? Or do I really have to sell Kerio to my customers?
    Thanks for any suggestion
    Regards
    Roman

    Hi Roman
I have had a few years setting up and administering various calendar options on Xserve.
The Apple built in iCal server is by far the worst of the lot.
Previous to that we used phpicalendar- http://phpicalendar.net/documentation/index.php/Main_Page
It is a bit dated and does not support the same feature set as the Apple one. It works well though.
Kerio on the other hand is great, works well and is easy to use, apart from accepting invites on iOS devices. Its also a much better mailserver than Apple's one.
Another option is to write a script to run everyday to stop and restart the ical service?

  • How to have iCal Server share one or more calendars?

    Hello everybody.
I'm really new to iCal Server, and I'd like to be able to create and share one or more calendars for a couple of users. I'm running Mac Mini with OSX SL Server 10.6.5 and have iMacs with the same OS.
Any how-to or such, to read and step-by-step configure the stuff?
I'm already looking at the Apple PDF (from Resources) but I'm stuck where it tells me to create the SRV record: I don't know which fields to fill in with the infos provided.
Any help will be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    F.

    Yes, it is Flavio.
There are other threads that claim you can disregard the manual in this respect. I tried disregarding it. It'll seem to work. Then within days users will complain of intermittent (1) "calendar not found", (2) "lack of permissions", and (3) "conflicts with client-side versus server-side" errors.
Creating the SRV is essential in this, because it's registering the iCal service with DNS, and DNS is telling the client how to involve the server in the service. To be technically accurate, the server does have a default response when the SRV doesn't exist, so, yes, it will work at times..., but it's hard to explain this to your users when they're asking you about clicking through error dialogs every five minutes. "What do I do here? Should I be worried about this?" You'll be pulling your hair out. I was. Once I had the SRV up, though, the errors have entirely disappeared.
In addition to the things in my last post, having Push Notifications working is also wonderful. Follow the steps in the manual, but basically it involves turning Push on before starting up iCal.
Lastly, there's the question of moving users' old calendars (which are client-based) over to the iCal server (which is server-based): You can't just import-then-export, or you'll find other, nagging errors (basically of type "3", above). As far as I've been able to tell, if the user's calendar contains events where they're not the organizer (and it will), you'll get errors because the user has now assumed an event they don't own. The errors you'll get are basically the server asking, "Who owns this thing? I don't get it."
Sadly, the only way around this is I've found is for the end-user to context-click on each old event and move it to the new calendar. When the calendar options there are ghosted, they'll know they have an event they don't own.
But once you get past this point, it works beautifully. Users get really excited, because they now see the wonderful opportunities they now have. And that makes you feel it was worth it (especially when you think of how much they'd be spending on Exchange).

  • Address Book and iCal Server backups

I'm working to implement a company-wide Address Book, iCal, and iChat server via Lion Server where I work, and I've gotten most of the setup figured out (I think), and am approaching the point where I can roll it out to a few users for further testing.  However, before I'm allowed to move forward any further w/ it I have to have two means of backing up in place and ready to be rolled out at the same time as the server—so I'm planning on using Time Machine as one so it does the entirety of the server and its data/settings, but they also want me to do one of the Address Book Server and iCal Server databases individually, like back up the folder the data is, so we can, if ever necessary, import the backup databases to another computer, so we at least have the content, if not the full server functionality.  And, for obvious reasons, it can't be backed up locally.
So I'm looking for a means of doing this and would love any input anyone has.  Ease of use/setup is pretty important as this is my first time setting Server up and I've no programming knowledge.  I'm fairly sure I'll be able to find (or write my own, though that's unlikely) or modify and AppleScript that simply copies/duplicates a Finder item, and I know I can have iCal automatically run a script (so I'd just have it run every night at midnight or something), but I have yet to figure out how to get the script to copy the folder to a specified location on a different server (or, for that matter, if it's even possible, though I'm sure it is...right?).  But that's not what I'm trying to ask here...though I certainly wouldn't mind if someone had thoughts on it and wanted to share them !  I just really would like to know which folders to back up, since it's not simply making an archive of the local Address Book.app database.
And, since I'm already here writing a post, I'll ask one other question that's been nagging at me: in Server Admin.app, with the server (not the services) selected in the sidebar on the left, the Access pane selected in the primary Server Admin window, and Services selected, and trying to dictate which users/groups can access which services, the user can click the "+" in the lower-left corner of the window where added users would appear, and another window pops up next to the Server Admin window that shows a list of the users (and groups if you click the appropriate button).  My question is, why does it show me _krb_anonymous, _krb_changepw, and a total of 81 other items?  I understand more or less what they are (in a very general sense), but why are they shown as users?  More importantly, do they have to be listed there?  Technically I'm probably the only one that's going to be the administrator, and I'll know not to add them or modify them, but I don't want anything related to those items appearing in a directory search in Address Book when I get it set up (as they are showing up now; for instance, one user I created is Sandy, and I have it set to include directory contacts in searches, so on a client machine that is correctly communicating w/ the server (add a user, it appears in a minute on another client machine, and vice versa) if I go to search for that name as soon as I type "s" Sandy, the actual user shows up, but so do five or six other things, all of which are items from the aforementioned list in Server Admin (pretty much anything that has an "s" in it, which of course makes sense)—and that's what I don't want, I don't want the users to search for someone, see something like _krb_anonymous pop up, then think something is screwed up and call me and demand I come fix their computer!).
Any thoughts, suggestions, and such are more than welcome and much appreciated!
    Thank you to all...

  • How do I create a group calendar in iCal Server 3?

    Hello everyone,
I have set up a Mac Mini server to address the calendaring needs of my company.  I have also turned on the iCal service using the Server app in the Lion OS.  While the shared calendaring functions for individual users of iCal are great, my company is in need of general office calendar for postings of things like vacation times, company holidays, special conferences, etc.  Is there a way to configure the Mac Mini server to allow the setup of such a calendar?
    Maximus. Prime

Okay, with everyone's help, I believe I have found a resolution to this issue.  I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed this discussion.  Your help has been invaluable.
    1.  The first thing I did was to ensure that the iCal and Wiki servers were both running.
    2.  Next, I created a user whose sole purpose was to create wikis on the server.  (In retrospect, I probably didn't have to do this, as any administrative account, which is what I have, can also make wikis).
    3.  I then created a wiki.  To do this open up your Web browser and enter in the name of your server followed by "/wiki" (no quotes).  An example of this is servername.local/wiki.  (If you are unsure as to whether or not DNS on your local network is working, you can enter the IP address of the server followed by /wiki).
    4.  Next login into the wiki by clicking on the lock icon in the toolbar.  (You can use the account you created earlier or any admin account on the iCal server for login).
    5.  Click the Wikis button.
    6.  Click the plus sign in the toolbar, then click New Wiki.
    7.  Enter a name and optional description.  It is much better to enter a short name with no spaces.  This will matter in a later step.
    8.  Next you will see the Set Wiki Access dialog box.  Here is where you can enter users of the wiki (calendar), and their permissions (i.e. Owner, Read-Write, etc.).
    9.  When done with the previous step, click create, and you should be taken to the "welcome" page of your wiki.
    10. Click the gear icon in the toolbar then select settings.
    11. Select Services in the sidebar, put a check into the Calendar box, and select Save.
    12. You should now see a link for Calendar underneath your toolbar.  Select it, then select Settings to adjust your timezone settings, etc.
    13. You can log out of the wiki at this point.
    14. Go to one of the users who was given access to the wiki in step 8.
    15. Open iCal -- Preferences then select the Accounts tab.
**Now here is where things get "tricky."**
    16. It is likely that this user has a functioning account on your iCal server.  If you go to the Server Settings tab of the account and check the Server Path, you will see an entry similar to /principals/__uids__/longstringofalphanumericcaharacters/.
    17. Replace the long string of alphanumeric characters with "wiki-wikiname" (no quotes).  The wikiname is the name you entered in step 7.
    18. Close the iCal preferences box, and close iCal.
    19. The user may be prompted to re-enter his/her password.  Do so, and afterward you should be have access to the wiki-based group calendar.
UH OH...what about the user's normal account?!?!?!
    20. Go back into the account preferences tab of iCal and re-add the user's normal iCal account with his/her normal credentials.  All of the user's calendar information should return because it is on the server and backed up regularly...right?
This solution appears to be working for me so far.  I have verified that users who can only read from the wiki calendar do not have the ability to edit the calendar.  Of course, those who can edit the calendar are able to do.  These test users are also able to use their normal iCal accounts without any issues.

  • Reasons why iCal Server can't be my company's calendar server

I want to believe. I don't want to use Exchange. But after testing iCal server and iCal 3 for a few days, I've found it's not going to cut it for us- a 60 person creative agency. Here's why:
-There's no concept of "blocks time". So, let's say I don't want the office to know that I'm going to a job interview, but I do need to block out the time so nobody tries to schedule me to a meeting. In other systems, I can make a private event, and have it block time. In iCal, locally stored events (which are therefore private), are invisible to the network. I can't have my time reserved without announcing why. Sneaky code phrases are possible, but shouldn't be needed.
Similarly, I can't define if an "all day" event keeps me busy or not. I'd be inclined to list a week's vacation as an all day event starting on Monday and ending on Friday. But for co-workers to see that I'm gone in scheduling, I have to list it as an event from 8A on Monday to 5P on Friday.
-There isn't any group support. Perhaps I have a project team of the same 6 people. There's no way to group those 6 under a heading, and check their meeting availability all at once- you can only invite individuals. The Address Panel has 3 of the 4 headings of Directory.app, but no Groups. Every time this project team gets together, I have to add the same people.
I would think I could make a group in Address Book, but that's not working.
-Delegation is all or nothing. I can't delegate that co-workers can see one of my public calendars, but not the other.
-The Availability Panel can't show what events are blocking someone's time. You have to have them turned on in the iCal view to know that.
Please, please tell me there are just things I don't get about iCal3/iCal server, and if I just did things differently, I'd be OK. Is there something I'm missing, or is this really how it works?
(This was also submitted to apple.com/feedback, and [email protected])

    Maximilian Reiss wrote:
Hi - haven`t looked yet at point 1 and 4, but also dislike point 2 and 3. Actually, afaik point 2 (individual delegation) is just a iCal (client) GUI limitation. I think the server would support it.
Group support regarding the client side is more or less there, just not in the new address panel. If you type the group name in the invitee field while editing an event you get the group.
I hope you filed bugreports for that at bugreport.apple.com
OK, here's another one. Window: Address Panel magically changes format for reasons I can't see. When I started this thread, I was in "Open Directory Lookup" mode of Address Panel. When you're here, you're only pulling addresses from OD.
When I returned to playing with iCal this morning, Address Panel was bringing back Address Book entries. When it's this way, yes, you can have a group defined in Address Book, and use that group as a shortcut to invite multiple people.
During the process of experimenting, Address Panel somehow reverted to Open Directory lookups. I'm not clear what controls this behavior.
So, yes, you can use Window: Address Book to pull up AddressBook.app, and drag a group from there into your invitee window. But is there a more integrated way (where leaving iCal isn't required) to invite a local group?

  • ICal Server and Python causing max CPU usage on 10.5.1 server

We are having an issue with iCal Server where a python process is monopolizing the CPU (70%-95%) to the point everything grinds to a halt. Once iCal is stopped, then started again it will be ok for anywhere from 10 minutes to a few hours before it starts all over again.
caldavd error Log is being bombarded with what looks like every transaction. See example below:
    2008-01-07 11:26:46-0600 [-] [caldav-8008] [HTTPChannel,4634,192.168.1.139] PROPFIND /principals/_uids_/BA237A85-F880-4A89-B1C1-F07E72A1508E/ HTTP/1.1
This may be completely unrelated, but the DirectoryService process seems to be running high (35%-40%) as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Mac OS 10.5.1 Server
DNS seems to be in working order

Server is running with a FQDN and functioning kerberos. The only thing regarding python twisted framework or close to it is when iCal server starts.

  • ICal Server not showing up in drop-down in WGM?

    Hello.
    I have two Xserves.
Xserve001 = OD Master, DNS (primary zone)
Xserve002 = Connected to OD Master, DNS (secondary zone), Web (and Wiki)
Everything thus far is working fine (including Wiki, even though it's on the second Xserve and not the OD Master)
Now I want to enable iCal Server on Xserve002.
I enter the hostname (xserve002.mydomain.com) in Host Name, save and Start iCal.
    It says iCal is running.
I then log into WGM, select a user and check "Enable calendaring", but the drop-down only lists "No Calendar Host Selected". Nothing else.
Does anyone know what could be wrong?
Also, I tried entering calendar.mydomain.com in Host Name, but when I click "Start iCal" it gives the error "No Virtual host found for iCal server". In DNS (on Xserve001) I have "calendar" set up as an alias to point to Xserve002, so I thought that entering calendar.mydomain.com should work?
Maybe this shouldn't work, but I don't know? And since when I enter xserve002.mydomain.com into the Host Name field and start the server, but it doesn't show up as a selectable option in WGM, I know there's something wrong with iCal Server as a whole right now and so it makes me question being able to use calendar.mydomain.com?
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

If it helps at all, these are my error logs, though I find these lines most interesting?

  • Unable to start iCal Server... am i opening a can of worms?

    Hello!
In Server Admin I'm unable to get iCal server to Start. Pressing start button, it thinks for about a second, then gives up. I went over to Terminal and typed the following command: sudo serveradmin start calendar and the result is: calendar:error = "NOVIRTUAL_HOSTERR" and google didn't return anything of value when searching that string.
The machine is set up as a directory slave using Directory Utility. There is a little green dot assuring me that all is okay. Note, the Users are able to create User blogs on the main server page, so it must be working as far as communicating with the directory server. (Note, i had to use Terminal to change one setting to allow the Blogs to work, by following the steps in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1619 )
I have not yet done anything with Certificates. The SSL option is not checked in the in the iCal Settings in Server Admin. Authentication = Any Method. Host Name = the host name I specified for Apache in the Web Settings of Server Admin.
I also have not done anything with DNS in Server Admin. It is not switched on. And I am not looking forward to hiring someone from Apple tech support to fill in the blanks for six hundred bucks, if that can be avoided. (Unless that is in fact what's wrong?)
I'm not really sure where to start or what to ask other than.. why won't it turn on?
