IChat and Managed Preferences

Has anyone gotten iChat to auto configure an account using Managed Preferences in Workgroup Manager?
I've gotten Mail.app to auto configure an account for users using Managed Preferences, but I've had no luck with iChat (or iCal).

I have it working in my setup. I don't use the iChat server but an external XMPP server ( Openfire in my case ).
I created a plist call com.apple.iChat.Managed with property list editor.
This is what it looks like in xml.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>XMPPAccount</key>
<dict>
<key>AllowSelfSignedSSL</key>
<true/>
<key>AutoDiscoverHostAndPort</key>
<true/>
<key>LoginAs</key>
<string>%@@fqdn-of-im-server-here</string>
<key>ServerHost</key>
<string>fqdn-of-im-server-here/string>
<key>ServerPort</key>
<integer>5222</integer>
<key>ServerSSLPort</key>
<integer>5223</integer>
<key>UseKerberos5</key>
<false/>
<key>UseSSL</key>
<false/>
</dict>
</dict>
</plist>
Once I created the plist I then added it via workgroup manager to a default computer group I have. I hope that works for you.
Cheers,
Chris

  • Time machine sharepoint and managed preferences

    I have added a share point as a time machine backup destination, and it shows up with Bonjour users. But I am setting up some machines with managed preferences, and I add the time machine volume in the time machine managed preferences pane, and supply the whole network path (afp://server.com/TimeMachine).
    The settings are added to the managed machine, but it can't mount the backup destination. Gives me error "The backup disk is not available".
    This error doesn't show when the disk is manually chosen in Time Machine preferences on non-managed computers.
    Any ideas?

    it sounds like you are using an OS X server. I suggest you post in the Snow leopard server forum

  • Clean Install and iChat and Safari

    My computer has reached a point where it takes 45 minutes - 3 hours to restart. Everything takes 10x longer than it should. I have tried everything i can think of (regular reinstall, limiting the number of applications running, removing peripherals etc) so unless there are other recommendations I have decided to run a clean install. I have copied all important data to an external hard drive but I am concerned about losing iChat and Safari preferences and settings. I was hoping someone could let me know the best way to carry these over.
    Thanks

    Hi G^B, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    IChat prefs are stored online, for Safari just copy the Safari folder.
    Here is a list of where your important data is stored ("~" stands for "Home"):
    Your data in ~/Documents
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iCal(copy the whole folder)
    Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)
    ~ /Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist *This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
    ~ /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Application Support/iMovie (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Pictures/iPhoto library
    ~/Music/iTunes
    ~/Movies/iMovie
    If you want cookies:
    ~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/Webfoundation/HTTPcookies.plist
    For Entourage users:

  • OS X Server 3.0.1 and OS X Mavericks: Managed Preferences not Removing on Mac After They are Removed from Server

    I just upgraded my server to OS X Server 3.0.1 and am testing changing some managed preferences on my MacBook Air with OS X Mavericks.  Initially from the upgrade the security & privacy and users & groups is disabled.  I changed the settings in profile manager, and the push was successful.  I then restarted my macbook air, and after logging in, it stalls and says "Updating Managed Preferences..."  it stalls for about one minute and then logs in.  Those preferences that I allowed in Profile Manager are still grayed out as if the preferences are not updating.  Has anyone see this or have any idea how to troubleshoot?
    Thank you.

    Dnar,
    Thanks for the follow up bit about using the smbutil statshares command.  I used that and could confirm that I am also able to force it to connect with smb2.  Oddly though, in the stat share info it still says "AUTO_NEGOTIATE"
                                  SMB_NEGOTIATE                 AUTO_NEGOTIATE
                                  SMB_VERSION                   SMB_2.1
    But maybe that just means something else and not the fact that it did not auto negotiate to SMB.  I guess for now this will be what I have to do to use smb2.
    I think in this case the AUTO_NEGOTIATE merely means it will auto negotiate a connection between SMB1, SMB2, and (from your data) also SMB2.1 this would have nothing to do with auto negotiating between SMB2 and AFP, which from this thread appears broken.
    I also would like to thank Brandon for the tip about smbutil statshares, I had been looking for a simple way to tell what version of SMB was being used to test my NAS.
    For everyone's benefit, it would appear from the above that whilst Apple advertise Mavericks as using SMB2 they have gone as far as implementing SMB2.1 and merely list it only as SMB2 for simplicity and due to the fact there is not a huge different between SMB2 and SMB2.1

  • Troubleshooting Managed Preferences

    I've been playing around with managed preferences on my test server. I've set up things like managed printing and preferences for the mouse and iChat.
    This all works like a charm on my test server, however it doesn't on my production server. So I'm pretty sure the setting on my test server are correct, I'm just not curtain about interfering factors.
    Now I've been looking around a lot and what I cannot find is a document about the inner workings of managed preferences. I know it's nothing more than a bunch of plist files that get pushed to the clients, but for some reason there is more magic at work in the background.
    So if anyone has some information or documentation about how managed preferences work. What kind of check are used to make sure the settings need to be applied (I read something about the MAC address in inspector for instance)? So if anybody some useful information regarding this subject I would be grateful.

    No, I'm sorry mate, but I never had one of my questions answered here. When I do make some progress you can count on it I will post it here.

  • IChat and iSight/Photobooth

    I'm sure this topic has been covered but I can't find anything that seems to be helping me. I just recently upgraded to 10.5.4 and ever since my built-in iSight camera has completely stopped working. When I open Photobooth the image area is gray, and the green light by the camera doesn't come on. Also since the upgrade, anytime I try to log on to iChat, it unexpectedly quits before I can even sign on, and does the same every time I try to relaunch. I've tried repairing permissions and that hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

    Hello Steve
    ... complete list of files (cache, library etc) that Isight draws upon.
    I do not think that iSight uses ANY caches. I suppose the apps that operate your iSight might.
    The best iSight technical info source I know is this search of the Apple Developer Connection. You may be able to get more specific help by becoming an ADC Member if you are not one already.
    As an alternative to researching the ADC info, I offer another thought you may have already considered or tried. If I understand correctly what you have been doing at this thread in the Time Machine Forum, you believe that your iSight problem might be correctable by resetting preferences or clearing caches, but you have decided not to attempt resolution by deleting ALL system preferences and caches. If you think it might be beneficial, you could try an application like Yasu that can give you some control over which preferences and caches you can reset without using the terminal or deleting items generated and managed by OS X.
    Finally, Steve, please allow me a word of caution for other readers. You seem to be an experienced OS X user who is more comfortable working at lower levels of OS X than many of us. For benefit of other readers who may be less knowledgeable, it is generally a bad idea to move, modify, rename, or delete any item outside your User > Documents folder unless you know what you are doing. While doing so will not harm your computer, if you damage your data or system files, you will need to restore them, which can be time consuming. Until you have enough knowledge to safely work with them manually, I suggest that you let OS X and your applications manage the files for you as they were designed to do.

  • How do I reset iChat and Facetime on an Air so I can  basically start fresh?

    How do I reset iChat and Facetime on my Air.  When I bought it we had everything on my husbands MacBook put on the Air.  All the iChat and Facetime setting are his so the Air and MacBook won't iChat or Facetime with each other.

    Remove their preference files in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Remove any related folder in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  Relaunch each application and reconfigure.
    Check the rest of the computer for other inconsistencies.  For example, the Computer Name in Sharing preferences may need to be changed.  Settings in Accounts preferences for the long name, account name, and password.  Changing the account name is quite complicated.
    If you truly wish to start fresh then erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.

  • How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"? (Library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes for Mac. Now getting update wars between Mac and Windows versions of the player.

    How to prevent iTunes for Windows from "Updating iTunes Library"?
    My library is on a NAS and managed by iTunes on a Mac. I can connect from wife's Windows laptop using iTunes for Windows but every time I do, it Updates iTunes Library. Next time I log in from my Mac it Updates iTunes Library in return. It appears I'm experiencing "Update Wars" between the Mac and Windows versions of iTunes. I would like to allow my wife to stream iTunes songs to her new laptop but I don't want any updates from this source... prefer to manage the library from my Mac and not allow Windows to do any thing other than listen to existing playlists.
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

    Connect the PC to the library on the NAS. Wait while "updated".
    Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced make sure the media folder is correctly pointed at the media folder on the NAS. If not correct, close iTunes, wait a few moments, then open iTunes again.
    Close iTunes on the PC. Do not open iTunes on the Mac.
    Copy the library files, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork into an empty iTunes folder on the PC, for example C:\iTunes.
    Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down SHIFT. Keep holding until prompted to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the copied .itl file, e.g. C:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
    The library should now work properly on the PC, however check the setting for the media folder. If needs be correct, close iTunes and reopen.
    Open iTunes on the Mac. It will update again, but that should be last time.

  • Leopard/AD integration- Managed preferences in OD questions

    I have issues and questions with “golden triangle” set up.
    Leopard 10.5.7 Server (already found the serial number snafu of upgrading to 10.5.8, and backed up a notch)
    I have followed the Bombich “Leveraging” guide and have gotten to where it appears things are supposed to be. Yet things are not working as expected:
    DNS lookup works both ways.
    My OD Server has been bound to AD.
    enabled Kerberos SSO.
    Klist –ke shows me lists of services services@ADkerberosrealm
    When I do the read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFilServer kerberosPrincipal I see my ODservername@ADkerberosrealm.
    So I Promoted server to to an OD master
    Question: At this point is Kerberos supposed to be running on the OD server? It’s just using AD Kerberos info, not acting as an independent KDC at this point? It’s currently listed in Server Admin as not running.
    Which may lead to my other issues:
    Even though things appear to be setup correctly, and I can bind AD bound Leopard client computers (10.5.7) to OD,
    Managed Preferences is a haphazard and frustrating thing.
    If I add an AD/ OD bound client to a Computer group and manage say a few dock items- add a few, subtract a few for that group, no items in the client dock are removed, and sometimes(only sometimes) is an added item reflected in the dock.
    Yet if I add a managed Login screen text Message- that shows up on the login screen.
    Managing an individual computer instead of a group fares little better.
    We need to manage groups of teachers on Mac clients with AD authentication by building location, and computer groups was the way that worked well in Tiger. But leopard clients didn’t play nice with the Tiger server. So I Upgraded (actually a clean install) to Leopard server and started from scratch to build an Leopard Golden Triangle with AD.
    I am still at the point where it would annoy me but not inconvenience me horribly if I were to have to reinstall and start again, but as the start of school draws closer I’d R-E-A-L-L-Y like to get this working.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks In Advance

    Go back and check DNS. Make sure forward and reverse both work. If DNS doesn't work, MCX will not work.
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
    Kerberos needs to be running from AD, not OD. Also, as stated, you have to have OD first, then AD in your search path so it will use the MCX.
    This is another issue I am dealing with. Not sure if this has been resolved. I was working on OS X 10.5.8 Server and had issues managing Computer Groups.

  • 10.5 Client refuses to authenticate Kerberos or obey managed preferences

    I am sure this has come up time and again, but a search in the forums has not come back with a work around.
    I am running Tiger Server 10.4.11 as an OD master serving up portable accounts in a mixed Tiger and Leopard Client Environment. I just did a Leopard upgrades on two MacBooks that were previously bound to the OD server when running Tiger.
    Upon completing the upgrades I have found two things:
    1) Local and network users working on the laptops are no longer being challenged for a kerberos ticket to authenticate to network shares served up by the 10.4 server
    2) Managed preferences for users as well as the clients are no longer being obeyed by the Leopard upgraded clients.
    Everything works as it should on my Tiger Clients connecting to the server.
    I have flushed the kerberos plists and rebound the Leopard clients to no effect, except to see some managed preferences on the login screen that somehow were honored in the upgrade be rolled back to factory defaults.
    I know that Apple has made a lot of changes in Leopard, but is there any known work around to get Leopard to pull kerberos tickets from the server and obey managed preferences? I am not yet ready to make the upgrade to Leopard server with a stable server environment already in place.
    Seems to me there should be some sort of workaround.
    Help!
    TIA,
    Art

  • Bad managed preferences that won't go away

    On one client machine, a deleted /Library/Managed Preferences/ folder keeps coming back, with incorrect user preferences, although:
    - I have unbound, rebound and unbound the machine from the server;
    - The machine is currently unbound;
    - I have repeatedly deleted the /Library/Managed Preferences/ folder
    - I have deleted every mxc or managed plist from the user's preferences folder
    - I have deleted the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mcx.manifests/ folder
    What am I missing?
    SL server and client.

    It sounds like you have some managed preferences setup in Workgroup manager. Are you using a network user account?
    Remember managed preferences can be defined by user, user group, computer or computer group.
    The best way to check your preferences is to look at all those options that apply to the user and / or computer you are having problems with. Open workgroup manager and select the user, group, computer or computer group and then click on "Preferences" up the top. If there are any preferences that have been defined for that record then it should be indicated by an icon that looks like the mouse cursor with a greyish circle in the background. Clear any unwanted preferences and try again.
    The ~/Library/Managed Preferences/ folder will regenerate itself when you login. This is why deleting this doesn't do anything.
    If this doesn't solve your problem, can you please be more specific about what preferences that you are having problems with. What is or isn't happening that you do or don't want to happen?
    Hope that helps.

  • ISight (iChat and PhotoBooth) cam is outputing CRAZY colors!

    Hi Everyone!
    I'm having an annoying issue. My HD recently crashed, and I just got it back from Apple. Fortunately I had TM running, so I got almost everything back. However.. after getting the machine up, and updating back to x.5.2.. my iSight is outputing CRAZY colors. Mainly yellow, grainy, nightvisiony looking image. It occurs in all video apps, I have tried resetting my SMC (although I have no way of knowing if I did or not), and jillions of restarts. I had this happen once before, and the SMC fix did it. Does anyone know a way to get the camera back to usable? Any thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

  • Hide function in Login Items doesn't work for iChat and Address Book app.

    There is a problem with the hide function for iChat and Address Book application in Login Items. If you go to System Preferences, click on Login Items, add the iChat and Address Book application to the Login Items, activate the hide function for iChat and Address Book application and restart your Mac iChat and Address Book application will start with opening a window. Normally this shouldn't happen if the hide function in Login Items is activated for iChat and Address Book application.

    Hi,
    Your link refers to changes to 10.6.3 prior release as tested by Developers.
    The numbering system tells us that. (Build 10Dxxx).
    Therefore it is an Update and not an Upgrade, therefore no-one is going to get charged.
    If the article is the so called Release Notes then they mention nothing about correcting any issue with Login Items Hiding.
    If you think an issue is being missed there is a place to report that, from this icon view list http://www.apple.com/feedback/ which includes Hardware and Software.
    I personally have not tested Login Items Hiding as I tend to think there is no point in having an App open if it not on the Desktop.
    As Kappy pointed out there was little progress on a similar issue with Leopard.
    This could be interpreted that Apple feel that the issue does not effect enough people or that other issues are more important.
    As anyone and everyone can report Issues and contribute their ideas to the OS and it's improvement via the Feedback links it would seem to be a question of enough people bringing it to Apple's Attention.
    I would tend to work on Issues that stopped an App functioning first, linked with integration with the OS and any changes to the major parts of it such as a Quicktime.
    Lesser issues that maybe more cosmetic in appearance would tend to fall down my list of things to do.
    Presumably Apple have a grading system on such things that may not fit with either of our views.
    As Apple don't reveal any details about the OS Updates or even Upgrades then anything any of us think we interpret as a pattern is just that - an interpretation.
    Consequently anything we say on the subject is then likely to be seen as speculation under the Terms of Use of these Boards.
