IChat changes status despite preference setting

IChat 2.1 on 10.3.9, changes the status back to available when returning to the computer. I deleted the pref file and reset everything, but, no change. On another computer with same OS and iChat versions, this does not happen. Also I did verify that when changed in the prefs panel, the changes are reflected in the pref xml file.

iChat was not running when I deleted it, ....
Sorry it is not yet clear to me, but "not running" can mean different things to different people.
Had you actually
b QUIT
iChat AV, or was it just not logged in and operating?
iChat AV should not be open in your Dock when your toss the .plist.
Also, I see you show that you are using 10.3.7. I suggest you update to the current version using the 117 MB Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo).
10.3.9 correct several issues with the previous Panther versions. Users have also reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying the Combo updates. See About the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Combo) for specific instructions.
I also suggest permissions repair
b before AND after
the "Combo" install. See Gulliver's Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance FAQ for why.

Safari 5.0.5 in Snow Leopard allows cookies to be set despite preferences set to NEVER.  How do I correct this glitch?

I just upgraded Safari to 5.1.5 and I'm having the same problem.  Despite the settings to BLOCK all cookies, cookies pile up like snow in a blizzard.  Ironically, the only site I've encountered whose cookies are actually blocked by Safari's preference setting is Apple's.
I couldn't log in because my preferences were set to BLOCK.  Doesn't stop any other site from setting cookies, only Apple's so far.
As for Lion - I've been told it's unstable.  I have already lost half my music files upgrading to Snow Leopard and
would rather avoid going through that again after spending a great deal of time retreiving the loss.  I've decided to wait until all of Lion's glitches are resolved.
Here is a link to the many pages discussing this cookie problem, and no solution in sight.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3140339?start=150&tstart=0
I assume you are on Lion.  And Safari's cookies preferences work as expected for you?

  • IChat changing Status on its own

I have now had a number of events where I set my iChat Status to "Away" or a custom "In Conference", and it shows that on my Buddy List, but the rest of the world sees something different.
When they then, based on what they see as my Status, invite me to a video chat, I can look at my Status to see that it has been changed to a Red square icon and the word "Available next to that, WITHOUT ANY ACTION ON MY PART. My status has change to something other than what I set it at.
My buddies see something other than Away or In Conference. My Status on my buddy list is different than what my status shows on their buddy list. How can that be???
It happens often enough that I have taken to using the Invisible option to avoid misleading them. I should not have to do this.
    Is anyone else seeing this?

    Hi grandpa,
Yes Unfortunately we know about this one.
From any AIM logged in Screen Name changing the Status Message in the Buddy list does not work as it should.
You see in your Buddy List what you chose.
What Your Buddies see is the Last Message (if there was one) and the last Status colour.
So you can get it to Show a Message of Away but with a green Available Blob.
You can also do it the other way.
    Two main work arounds.
In Leopard setting the stats in a Jabber or Bonjour Buddy list works as they all display the same.
For Snow Leopard and Leopard using the Menu Bar incon to set the messages works.

  • New iMac wakes from sleep sluggishly and requires password despite preference setting

My new iMac (Core i7) wakes from sleep very sluggishly and it requires a password despite the fact that I have de-selected this option in Preferences.
I have a new iMac.  I used Migration Assistant to move everything from my older Mac Pro, which was running Lion.  Under the Secucrity settings in Preferences, I de-selected "Require Password."
I use a bluetooth mouse and wireless keyboard.  Typically I click the mouse to wake up my Mac.  The screen comes to life and the cursor moves with the mouse, but...how can I explain this?  When I move the mouse in this situation, the cursor paints a gray swath over the desktop screen.  It looks like I am using a paint program.
After clicking the mouse repeatedly the computer becomes responsive and the password entry screen appears--most of the time.  I have tried to set it up so a password is not required, but usually I get this screen.  SOMETIMES, it behaves correctly--say one-fourth of the time.
Another problem...  When I shut the iMac off and then back on, it does not always link to my Apple bluetooth mouse.  I have to connect a USB mouse and re-link the wireless mouse.
I wonder if this is a software/OS issue.  My old Mac Pro had similar wake-up issues, and I wonder if Migration Assistant transferred them to my new machine.
Your thoughts and great ideas are appreciated.

I too am having trouble with my bluetooth mouse after upgrading to 10.7.2 and the associated iOS 5 upgrades.  The mouse keeps losing its connection.  I've turned bluetooth off, trashed the preferences, rebooted and repaired both the keyboard and mouse but the mouse keeping dropping out.  Keyboard seems ok.  Anyone have any ideas?

  • Dock auto-hides, despite preference setting

An odd occurence with my MBP Retina.  Despite the "Automatically hide and show the Dock" preference being UNchecked, my dock still auto-hides, but only when I click on stacks under certain circumstances.  So, this doesn't happen when the stack is set to show as List; only when set to show as Grid or Fan.  Then, when I single-click on a Grid or Fan stack, the dock will always auto-hide after losing focus.  Does anyone else with a MBP Retina have this problem?  I'm using the latest software to date, OS X 10.8.3.

If CT's suggestion didn't work, try resetting the dock.
Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn't work.
You need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/ Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • Ichat away status

    Hi,
My ichat recently been changing its status on its own. I usually put my status as away, and when I log off for a few hours and then log back on it will still say that I am away. Recently when I have been logging off then logging back on it's saying available. I haven't done anything to it, so I don't know what is causing this. The only thing I can think of is that I recently updated my computer, but it was for itunes and something about security. I remember it was on the day they released lion. I am currently using ichat 4.0.9 on leopard. Any help would be great thank you.

    Hi,
    iChat Preferences > General section.
There should be a check box to say if iChat changes Status on Launch (The default is to be set to Available)
Unchecking this box will leave the Status as it was last set (before Quit)
There is also a setting in the Accounts pane.
This also Auto Logs in an account (AIM logins) if set.
Multiple Logins may also effect the Status.

  • Won't open new page when I click bookmark, instead changes pages EVEN THO PREFERENCES SET TO OPEN NEW PAGES

Firefox keeps on changing pages, even yanking minimized pages back onto the screen and changing them, even though I have Firefox preferences set to always open new pages to accommodate links on a page or bookmarks.
I don't want Firefox to tamper with any pages, period. If I have a pages minimized, no way should Firefox be yanking that page up back onto the screen because it's "too lazy" to open up a new page to accommodate a bookmark or link clicked on.
It's extremely aggravating to click a link on a page, get a new page then, when I click the page to close it I find no page underneath, indicating that Firefox had changed the original page rather than open up a new page automatically to accommodate the link, etc.
What's the point of me in Firefox preferences setting it up for Firefox to open up new pages automatically when afterwards it doesn't?

Perhaps try the add-on Tab Mix Plus. It has a feature that you can force every link to open in a new tab if you like:
    * http://tmp.garyr.net/help/#Links (description of options - see "Force to open in new tab")
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/ (install page)
I don't know whether it has any effect on bookmarks. You can open those in a new window by holding Shift or in a new tab by holding Ctrl when clicking.

Nope. You can always reverse that if you choose.

  • Changing OSX default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences

When I change the default volume setting to a higher level in sound preferences within OSX, it is back at the lower level at the next listening session the following time I use iTunes on my Mac Mini. Within System Preferences there is a section that lets you "choose a device for sound output" but the only choice I have is "line-out" and under the "port" heading there is only "built-in output"--no other choices are shown. I have external speakers attached which I like to use for listening to music as I work. What is the problem? Why won't the higher volume I set remain? Also, shouldn't more than one choice be shown for sound output?

This sounds like the problem that I'm experiencing and <a href-"http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2694517#2694517">aske d about a couple of days ago. The sound level resets to 50% after shutdown.
I tried setting the levels in Audio MIDI Set Up as suggested above, but that hasn't changed anything.
In answer to B_web, I am running my external speakers through the headphone jack.
    So, any other suggestions?

  • Problem with iChat changing my custom away message after 30 minutes

Lately, I've been having a big problem with iChat changing any custom away message that I put up to "Away" after 30 minutes or so. Is there anything I can do to make it stop? Another issue I'm having is that sometimes when people on my buddy list change their away message, it doesn't show up on iChat unless I go offline and then sign back on. Any idea why it's doing that, and what I can do to get it to stop?
    Thanks.

  • HT204379 My screensaver wont change from its default setting??

My screensaver wont change from its default setting despite me changing it multiple times. Ive restarted the machine, but doesnt help, any suggestions???
I have the brand new basic Mac Mini Quad Core i7, Mac OS 10.8
It goes to a password protected blank screen screensaver after 5 minutes or so.
Ive changed it in the screensaver in preferences to origami after 1hour, and its registered as such, but after 5 minutes it goes to blank screen screensaver again.
This is infuriating as I am trying to batch convert many MP4 files and when it screensaver it stops everything.
PLEASE HELP, ITS DRIVING ME NUTS.

Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu. A folder window should open. Inside the folder is a file with a name of the form
    com.apple.screensaver.*.plist
where "*" stands for a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes. Select that file and open the Info dialog.
Does the dialog show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section?
In the General section, is the box labeled Locked checked?
    What is the Modified date?

I have inadvertently changed a file permission setting. When opening Aperture I get the following; "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library make sure it's file permissions are set correctly". I am an old dude new to Mac OS. Looked in settings but have no idea how to allow file sharing to myself. I have been using Aperture actively for 6 weeks. I'm the only one using this Mac. What up?

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Cannot change my printer preferences

    Dear Hp technicians:
Hi I'm from Mexico and I just loged in to my hp e-print center and it took me here. My problem is I find it really difficult to log in from my country coz' hp connected doesn't work, it simply just don't let my Log in.      I found that visiting hp connected-uk is the only way to log  in. But then,  I'm loged in, but I cannot change my printer preference coz' the button  doesn't exist, the one that used to say "Change setting"  is now just simple text.  How can I go back to e-print center instead of HP connected..... Please this is driving me crazy!
    I need your help

Hi there, if you've updated your ePrintCenter account to HP Connected you can't revert back. Check out this thread for more information on the change from ePC to HP Connected http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/ePrint-Print-Apps-Mobile-Printing-and-ePrintCenter/HP-Connected-Support...
Can you reply with a screenshot showing exactly what it is you're trying to change? Is it a setting of a printer in the Device tab or is it something in the "Settings" dropdown menu at the top right of the screen below?
If my reply helped you, feel free to click on the Kudos button (hover over the "thumbs up").

  • How to restrict user to change status.

    Dear All,
we want to restrict users to change the status from set to assign to released status.
is there any authorization object to restirct user to change status?
i was trying with object CPRO_DPO Create Project Definition with activity 43 release ,but unable to do so.
    Please do need ful
    Regards
    Ravindra

    Hi Ravi,
probably you need to create user status profile.
Use TA BS02 to create status profile
here you have to add authorization key which needs to be defined in BS52
use b_user_stat auth object to give profiles in custom roles in PFCG
Thus you can block access to change status
    Niranjan
Let me know if it helps
    Points welcome
