IChat was great, now in 10.6 it is junk

We use iChat often for video conference calls. We were able to have great results and consistent quality and speed, even for international chats.
Now on 10.6 the audio quality is poor and choppy, the video hangs often, and the delay is very bad. We upgraded to 10.6 just for the reason that iCHAT was better. So far it is worse.
Our setup is mac mini's in the offices for conference rooms. I have a macbook. And my office also has a Macbook pro. All purchased within the last year. The one mini that is located out of country has not yet been upgraded to 10.6. The rest are on 10.6.
I just finished a call that was mini to mini that are both on 10.6. Terrible results. A few nights ago, we could not add a 4th person without audio dropping out on one of the locations. The audio bar in the Connection Doctor kept dropping to 0%. The video bar bounced around.
Any ideas on settings to make this work right?
I hope a patch is coming soon as this does not work well.

Hi,
Try setting the iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps. Also try it at 200kbps (this is below the specs for Multi-chats)
Do it at one end first and then another.
Do a complete set of combo speed tests.
iChat 4 used to read the Speed set in System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming and was limited to 384 k if left on Automatic and we suggested 1.5Mbps to get the "most" out of the connection.
iChat 5 reads the Whole Internet speed connection you have.
This then gets effected by the changes in bandwidth you have moment to moment in a office set up.
You may also be over-running a Buddy hence jerky video.

  • I have a iPhone 3GS and my husband has the iPhone 4 , both phones with updated current . We added iMessage to them at first it was great, now I don't get half the texts my husbands send and when I send him a text message it will come up from my email???

I have a iPhone 3GS and my husband has an iPhone 4, both phones are updated. We added iMessage the them both and at first it was great, the messages appear in the text messages under the phone contacts and when I send a text message it will either be a green message  or a blue one for (iMessage) depending on the signal.  Now when my husband sends a text message to me I don't get them all or some days none. When I send him a text message he gets them from my email address. I cannot send him a standard text anymore my phone only wants to iMessage, so if the signal is not right it just sits there undelivered???
I also have a friend who that we regularly texted each other, for the past 4 months I can receive her texts but she never gets mine? And I have tried countless times, now iv given up trying and I don't use texting to either, but everyone else no problem.

You and your husband can share a store account and still have seperate iCloud accounts for your contacts, bookmarks and stuff like that.  Click here for instructions to make an apple account without entering a credit card.  Make sure you use a different email address for each apple account.
Set up your iPhone/iPad whatever using the new account for iCloud.  Then go into settings/store and sign in with your purchasing account, you may need to sign out of the other account.  To the best of my knowledge, your household is allowed to share purchased legally, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Once you each have your own devices set to your own accounts you can set them to backup to that account and it will keep all your contacts seperate.

  • My iPod nano 4GB (2nd gen.) battery was great, now its dying within a few hours?

    Hello,
I have a iPod nano 4 GB (2nd gen.) I have had it for years and up till recently the battery was great on it.
For a few weeks now my battery will die very quickly. I will have it fully charged and within 2 hours it will be dead. I have no applications running, just music. Nothing has changed at how I use it, but the battery just does not hold.
I charged it again last night and listened to music for about 30 min when I checked it, the battery was about dead. I gave it a few min. then it said it was half way charged?
I do not have wi-fi or anything on this...just music.
I also checked to make sure its software was up to date which it is. Can it just be the batterys worn out?
    Thanks

Yes.  Your iPod's Lithium ion battery will slowly start to lose its ability to retain full capacity over time.  Nothing lasts forever.  Sorry.

  • Wi-fi was great now its gone!!!

i guess i'm an idiot. i had all of the issues with my ipod touch and the wi-fi fixed and was really enjoying it. then i went to use safari and it told me page could not be displayed because server stopped responding. Now i have no itunes, no browser, nothing except a headache. the worst problem is i cannot remember how i got it set up in the first place. I reset my network settings on my touch and now i'm stuck. cant remember what i am supposed to do to get it fixed. HELP!!!!!

Resetting your network settings should have fixed it if you are logging onto a network that you normally use. Why don't you send us some details about your router, your network settings, etc.

  • IChat was working with AIM

IChat was working now when I make myself available it tries connecting to aim three times then tells me I've tried connecting to many times and to try again later. I've reset my password, worked once but not working now.

As a first step delete com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist
This file will not show up with Spotlight or Find so go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and drag it to the Trash.
    Restart iChat

  • IChat was working...now, no joy..

    Hi there
I'm trying to provide tech support to my mother's new Macbook and doing so from afar. When she trasferred everything from her old mac, things worked great. Connected wirelessly through her 3rd party router. iChat worked great and we video chatted, etc.
Today, she can't log onto ichat. The buddy list just says "connecting...." and nothing happens. I have done the following:
    (1) had her choose "offline" for status, then re-connect
    (2) restart computer (multiple times)
    (3) delete all preference files and start up again, re-entering her account info
    (4) replaced iChat application with a copy from my computer
    (5) repaired permissions
any ideas? I'm out of options...

    Hi there...
ya, that was dumb to install from my copy of iChat. My mom spent an hour on the phone with apple today and they did a re-install of ichat from the install disks, but no luck. The apple tech told her that the problem might be with AIM server? That's weird.
I then had her create another account with my login information and it worked! I then created a new AIM screename and put that information into iChat...and it won't work...***? That makes no sense. now, she has my account and her new account and mine will work but the new one won't. It just sits there saying "connecting....". The "server" settings in iChat are the same for both accounts.
her previous mac was an iBook. She used the built-in assistant and transferred her information via firewire cable. The iChat copy i sent her was from my intel mac. She's since re-installed from the install disks. I think that answers your question...
I think she had Tiger on her iBook. I'll double-check. The firewall is off in system preferences.
I will check the quicktime streaming you speak of. But, does that make sense given one account will work and the other won't?
Should I just have her do an archive and install?

With software 5 I now have to pair it every time in Bluetooth, it's a pain. was great in the past never had to do it.  HELP

I have deleted all other devices so clear of anything and then paired my iPhone 4 and will work just fine, but when i shut down the Jeep and come back later it doesn't automatically re-connect. i have to turn off bluetooth on the phone, turn it back on, and reconnect again and will work.
How would I find out and update the software to my 2011 Jeep Liberty's Uconnect system? Do I call someone or do something directly in the Jeep on the Uconnect system?
Thanks for the help, its greatly appreciated.

My wife had a problem with her iPhone 5C with no voice on the Maps app.  I visited my local Apple store and they said the problem was in iCloud.  We did a new install and it works great now.  Now 4 days later my iPhone 5 that is tied to the same iCloud has the same problem with the Maps app.  I really don't want to go through a new set-up with my iPhone 5.  What's going on with iCloud?

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

MacBook Pro 8,1 – Intel Core i5 – 2.23 GHz (early 2011) New with OSX 10.6 – current on all updates.
I successfully installed rEFit. I used Boot Camp to install Win 7.  All was great.
Then installed debian 6.  Somehow after the debian install and restart (I know this sounds crazy) but I am now reduced to Win 7 only. rEFit is not present when rebooting nor is OSX or debian. Further, I am unable to force the install DVD to launch when rebooting, by holding C, D or F8.  The Option key brings me to the grey screen with a padlock. I have attempted the root and local pw- no go. Restart holding D takes me to the windows boot manager. I have attempted several options within the Advanced Options; including – Repair Your computer, safe mode and “last known good config,” All of which did nothing.
I can see all my OSX files within win7. I tried to install the OSX within windows. Ya right, that did nothing..
I only desire to get back to OSX...
    What are my options??

Yes, you royally hosed up your machine.
You should first try to get your files off, any way you can to a external drive.
Your going to need to hold c and boot from the disk that came with your computer and a couple of screens in under the menu is a option for Disk Utility.
Select your drive and Erase with Security Option Zero, format the drive HFS+ Journaled and when that's finished (about a hour or so) then quit and install OS X from the installer.
I hope this works, but I suspect it won't. Others have hosed their machines trying to use a Linux disk without proper partition formatting too.
Another option might be to use another Mac to c boot off the Snow Leopard disk and install OS X onto a external drive, take that to the problem Mac and try holding option and booting off of it to erase your internal drive.
    You could replace the drive.

Is this holding option while booting?
There was someone else around here who hosed their Mac with a Linux disk too. Try to find it.

  • Why do you so much want to be chrome. the way firefox looked before was fine. now you look like a chrome want to be. why

you look just like chrome. and the only time i can see someone or something wanting to look like someone or something is because they want to be that. do you want to be chrome are they that much better than you that you have to look like them. Firefox was great the way it was. now you are just a copy cat.

  • Ichat was unable to login to aol instant messenger because...

    Hi There
I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Leopard and all was good. EXCEPT that now I can't log into iChat anymore!
    I keep getting this message:
ichat was unable to login to aol instant messenger because your screen name or password was incorrect .
I know that both are correct because I can log into my old iBook and my iMac.
I don't have aol, I use .mac although I don't subscribe, just use it for iChat.
I've deleted the account and started again but always get the same message. I can log in fine using gmail and I used a friends aol and that works but nobody can log into ichat with a .mac screen name.
    Help me please.

Ok I also can't log in via adium but if I use my wife's or my mother in-laws sign in then iChat works no problem.
I'm confused because I know my details are correct. Could it have anything to do with the initial set up of the os?

  • Ios 8 keeps crashing on my iPad 2. Has anyone got a solution to this. My iPad 2 was great before upgrading.

ios 8 keeps crashing on my iPad 2. Has anyone got a solution to this. My iPad 2 was great before upgrading. It's so bad that now I want to throw my iPad out so if anyone has tips to enhance my iPads performance please share.

I would read up on restoring your device
    Restore
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
Especially if you installed the update over the air,  a restore, which will use a computer to install the iOS again sometimes helps. There seems to be better results from doing it via iTunes than over the air

  • Ipad 4 retina display is slow after iOS 8, also upgrade the the iOS 8.0.1 i think and safari is slow, animations are slow, and i can't restore it to iOS 7, there it was great.

ipad 4 retina display is slow after iOS 8, also upgrade to iOS 8.0.1 i think and safari is slow, animations are slow, and i can't restore it to iOS 7, there it was great. i mean its like my iphone 4 with iOS 7 in its best days. i hope no to get stuck again, i mean please let me go to the iOS 7)).

Upgraded my ipad4 from ios6 to iOS 8 because the new WSJ app required it. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!! I can maybe understand some apps being slower but not Safari or Chrome. Apple must be throttling back the ipad4 processor even more with ios8 to force an upgrade to the next gen iPad whenever it arrives.

An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.  Please contact the apps support team for more info.
Is anyone else having this problem?
I tried to re-install and got the following message:  iTunes was not installed correctly.  Please reinstall iTunes.  Error 7 (Windows error 1114)
Does this mean I have now lost everything?

I just had the same error:
    R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly.  Please contact the apps support team for more info.
I went to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925 and did a complete removal and reinstallation of iTunes. You MUST follow the directions here exactly...it's more than just iTunes that must be removed, and it MUST be done in the order in which the support article says.  I followed the exact instructions, and iTunes is back on my machine (no more C runtime error) and you do NOT lose your music...it's all in my library, as it was before.
    Good luck!
