Icon image formats question

"Icon image formats used for iconic buttons can be .ico files at design time, but must be GIF or JPEG format at runtime. There is no other restriction of this related to deployment."
Read the above statement in an STS test paper and was wondering this is true. How does it work is it that the .ico are automatically converted at runtime or do the other extensions need to exist at runtime.
Incidentially does anyone know if there is a good source for forms icon files hiding out on Oracle.com
Thanks

WebForms usually do not show the icons at design time, but with little configuration we can display them, and since webforms will only show only GIF and PNG files (no JPEG) the design time icons are a bit fuzzy, so you can use .ico files for design time and .gif or .png for runtime.
You must have two sets of icons if you want to view the icons at design time.

• Converting clip to still image, format question

Hello.
I have created a still image from my interlaced video. I now need to export it to fit the following film format to be applied on a promotional postcard. The format needed is:
(.TIF, .PDF, .JPG, .EPS, .AI)-all are okay
300 dpi (dots per inch)
1/8 bleed size
Resolution: 1875px x 1275x
How do I make these sort of specifications in FCP? I am without Adobe or any of the others.
And also, I will be creating a movie poster too within the next few days. I had no problem creating a design in FCP for a postcard but the actual poster is a different matter. It is possible to create a poster in one of the programs part of Studio 2?
Thanks.

You REALLY, REALLY need to use a high resolution still photo for printing purposes ... especially if you plan to blow it up to poster size.
A still image from video will yield the same resolution as your footage; for example, a still from DV footage would produce a 720 x 480 image at 72dpi.
You'll need Photoshop or other photo editing software to manipulate the image beyond that - FCP won't do it.
FWIW, I'd recommend saving the still image from FCP as an uncompressed TIFF file, then send it to a print house to handle the rest.

• How to make an icon image using Photoshop

I found out how to do this recently so I decided that I wanted to make a tut for those who don't know how to make an icon image. This icon image is for the libraries tab on your computer. Under the libararies tab there is Music, Pictures, Documents, and Photos
First you will need the ICO (Icon image format) Format extension for photoshop which can be downloaded here:
http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/icoformat/trunk/dist/README.html
The download link and tutorial on how to install it is all in the link above.
Once you have that all set you can now launch photoshop to create your icon image. Once you have launched it, create a new document with the size as in the image below.

Create the image you want. I used a simple one by using the custom shape tool by pressing "U" on your keyboard and with the
basic blending options.

The reason why the image is pixelated is because it is an icon image. Since the image is only 256x256 pixels when you zoom in on it that will get you the pixely result. The reason why I zoomed  in is so you can see it. But don't worry this is no the end result. Just continue reading and you will see.
So once you have created the icon go ahead and press
file>save as>(under format choose the ICO)>and choose the name that you want to name it. And save it in your C: drive. You will see why to save it in your C: drive in a sec.

So now that you have created the icon and saved it now you can create the new library.

Name the library whatever you want I named it "Sample" for tutorial purposes. Notice how it gives you a default boring icon image for your library.

So now once you have created and named your library now it is time to get the icon image into place.
Go to computer/c: Drive/users/YOU/ And now once you have reached this area you will need to access a hidden folder named "appdata" to do so press "Alt" then a menu bar will show. Click
tools>folder options>and view. Find the option to view hidden folders then press apply then ok. Now we shall continue so AppData>Roaming>Microsoft>Windows>Libraries
Now you should see all the libraries including the one you just created.

Once you have reached your destination then open a new text document with notepad and drag the library you just created in notepad. The result should look like this:

once you have reached this point click at the end of the second to last line down then press enter and enter in this information
<iconReference>c:\"NAME OF ICO FILE YOU CREATED IN PS".ico</iconReference>
Example:

Once you have entered that information go to file>save and the icon image should appear on the library you created.

Now you are officially finished. Go and spread the news and joy. Bye for now

It is Windows only because all those screen shots are exclusively Windows, the file structure and paths do not resemble those of the Mac in the least.  As a Mac user, there's nothing I could take from your tutorial.  Sorry,
No drives named with letters like C: on the Mac, for instance.  No backward slashes either, ever.  No such paths either.  No "Notepad" on the Mac, we use TextEdit; but such a text editor is not remotely needed on the Mac to make and/or edit icons.  Etc.
Those folders are not even called "Libraries" on the Mac…  Nothing resembling your tutorial at all.
The icons in the Finder's Sidebar are not customizable at all in recent version of OS X.

• Questions related to Disk Images - Image Format Options

Can anyone tell me a more about using Disc Images? I am with a group of new Mac Users and we're focusing on Disc Images at the moment. Want to create a Keynote Presentation for the group when finished.
I have found already a few answers here, if someone could help me on the rest?
In this Thread I focus on the Image Format.
Disc Utility (using OS 10.5.7) offers the following options when creating a Disc Image:
sparse Disk Image
sparse bundle Disk Image
Unanswered Question:
1) What is the difference between sparse Disk Image and sparse bundle Disk Image?
Answered Question (if you have ad-on Informations for the answered Questions feel free to jump in):
Question: What is sparse disk Image for?
Answer: "Choose an image format. You can use "sparse disk image" for a disk image that only uses as much space as it needs, rather than a set amount of space. If you're not sure, use "read/write disk image" choice." (Source: How to create a password-protected (encrypted) disk image in Mac OS X 10.3 or later: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578)
Thanks in advance
Rama

Thank you both for your Infos so far. In the meantime I've created some Disk Images. What I noticed is, when I choose a small Image Size like 10 MB, then it changes from "Single Partition Map" to "No Partition Map". When I go bigger to 500 MB it changes to "Hard Disk".
It was already helpful to read the Manual to understand the Single Partition Maps, but what I still don't understand is the difference between using "no partitions map" at all and the other options such as "Hard Disk", "CD/DVD" or "CD/DVD with ISO Data".

• Safari broken image link question mark in a blue box icon

The url I get the safari broken image link question mark in a blue box icon most often is "apple.com/startpage/". There may be 10 or 12 of them. However, most apple.com pages have at least 1. In fact I am looking at 1 right now. I have emptied the cache. I do not wish to reset Safari because I do not want to reenter all of the passwords to various sites. Is there a simple answer?

Hi Rex,
Who is your ISP and what addresses do you have set in the DNS section of your System Preferences -> Network preferences?
Have you tried logging into a different user account on your machine to see if that has the same problem? This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> [+] to create a test one (and [-] to remove it if needed)
Also, do you use any third party internet software (Norton, Intego, etc.)?

• Canon G7x and unsupported image format icon with RAW files.

When RAW files downloaded from Canon G7x get "Unsupported Image Format" message. Using iMac with 10.9.5  and Aperture 3.5.1.  This is a new camera and is not on the supported list.  Is there a way around this?  Now that Aperture is static will new cameras continue to be added to supported list?

The only way 'around' it is to upgrade to the required Aperture and/or OS version.  So you will need to wait for that to happen. In the meantime you could shoot Raw+JPG, use the JPGs now and when (and if) the camera is supported (or you move to a different program) you will have the Raw files.
As for camera updates in Aperture, no one here can say what Apple intends, we;re just users here like yourself and even discussing this is technically against the TOU of these forums.
But I think it is safe to assume, as Apple will continue to support Raw processing and that the Raw processing is done at the OS level and they have said they will support Aperture at least through Yosemite's life cycle that any new Raw format added to OS X will reusable by Aperture. But that's only a guess.

• Unsupported Image Format Error- Damaged files???

I have been working a series of pictures (all .jpg) and doing some editing. Pictures were fine.
I went back in today and a fair number of pictures are now indicating unsupported image format and just show red. I can see the image in the thumbnail and briefly if I press "M" or click on the red background. The image will flash and then go back to the red-background with "unsupported image format" message.
What happened?
Can I get back to the Master somehow and save the image?
Are there certain edits you shouldn't try in a .jpg (vs. RAW) file??
I am afraid to do more work on the pictures for fear of damaging more files.
Thanks.

Hi Pittsburgh,
I don't have a quick fix except to go and find the master file. If you're using a referenced file, this should be easy enough; just navigate to the place you're storing all the masters. If you're storing all your master files in your Aperture library, this can be opened by right-clicking the library icon, and selecting "Show package contents". You might need to do this 3 or 4 times to navigate through the library, folders, projects and import groups etc, but it is possible to dig right down to the originals.
Once you've found the original file, how does it look? Can you open it with other apps? (Be careful not to save any changes to this file). Is the file there?
If you can answer this question, you'll give us more info to work with and a better chance at resolving your problem.
Of course you could look up this problem in your manual, or Time Machine back a while and restore either file or the project. But these are last ditch efforts (the manual especially

• Aperture error Unsuported Image Format on my previously fine photos

My Aperture librery is located on an external hard drive.
In the same iMac I shared the same library among the family users.
By doing so, most of my previously fine photographs on all projects show the error message "Unsuported Image Format"
Need to solve it as this is frustrating. There is a lot of work behind those pics.
Any ideas?
Manuel

I read in the info you sent that probably I need another external driver or create an image in the same one. Correct?
Hi, Manuel,
Your current drive will do, as long as it is formatted for mac - to be exact, as long as the file system is MacOS X Extended (Journaled) and you have set the "ignore Ownership" flag as shown in my screenshot.
To enable this flag, select the icon of your external drive in the Finder and use the command "File > Get Info ⌘I". In the Info panel disclose the "General" brick to check the filesystem, and disclose the"Sharing & Permissions" brick.
Enable the "Ignore Ownership..." flag, if it is not set.
I do not understand the question about the library being Managed or Referenced. Please explain.
Then your originals are probably managed.
"Managed" means that you are storing the original image files inside the Aperture library
and "Referenced"  means that you are storing the original image files in a folder outside the Aperture library. Aperture is only referencing files somewhre else, and you are responsible for taking care of them. Typically you would use a referenced library, if your drive is running out of space and you need additional storage for a growing library.
Where the original image files will be stored is set up in the "Import" panel, when you import your images. The default is "Sore Files in the Aperture Library".
Prior to seeing your emai I recover al pics using the command "Reprocess Originals" and now I see all pics apparently unchanged from my editing.
That should not happen - please check, if all your adjustments are still enabled.
Select one of the images in the browser and open the "Adjutment" tab in the Inspector panel. Are all edits still enabled? Are the checkmarks in the adjustment brick checked, for the edits you applied? Like this?
If your adjustmenst are enabled, but not visible, select all affected images andrebuild your thumbnails and previews:
Photos > generate Thumbnails
Photos > Update Previews (or hold down the ⌥-key and select "Generate Preview").

• How to change the bar chart rendering image format in SSRS

Hello all,
I am working with SQL Server 2008 R2 and I have a SSRS bar chart report, when the report got rendered over online or if the take Export (PDF and PPT), the image is in png format always, which is taking too much of time to execute the report in case of large
data.
Can, It be possible that the rendered image is in jpeg format instead of png.
If Yes, please share the appropriate steps to follow:
Thanks in advance
Pankaj Kumar Yadav-

Hi Pankaj067,
According to your description, you want to change the bar chart rendering image format as JPEG format when previewing the report or exporting to a PDF file .
In Reporting Services, the chart rendering image format is PNG by default. It’s a by-design behavior. And it doesn’t open any API for us to change the image type when exporting a chart to a format. So in your scenario, your requirement can’t be achieved
in Reporting Services currently. I would recommend you submit a feature request to Microsoft at this site:
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer. So that we can try to modify and expand the product features based on your needs.
If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

• HT1553 I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error...

I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error... Help!!

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

• Firefox for Mac preferences shows .qif file format for quicken as "quicktime image format"-wrong application and won't let me select anything else

Post to Firefox forum; Oct.2011
Re: Quicken 2007; Mac OS 10.5
Problem: can’t import or download Qif format files into quicken from bofa or Chase. Mac can’t recognize; how do I set preferences in Firefox (or Safari).
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/new?product=desktop&category=d1&search=Firefox+for+Mac+preferences+shows+.qif+file+format+for+quicken+as+%22quicktime+image+format%22-wrong+application+and+won%27t+let+me+select+anything+else&showform=1
Hello,
I previously used Firefox on my old Mac G4 with OS 10.3.9; the above issue existed with that system and Firefox 2.00.2 (or similar). I then "tried" to move to a G5 Mac with OS 10.5, hoping that an updated Mac Operating system and updating Firefox would solve that problem.
I'm now working on my son's MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8, 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo; 2gb Memory; 2 gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
I still have a problem in Firefox Preferences trying to download .qif files. BofA Mortgage accounts only allow downloading of .qif files. My .qfx download works fine, but the error message is as follows:
The error message is that this is a corrupted file or one that Preview doesn't recognize.
and it is still a problem when trying to download Quicken .qif format files for our B of A mortgage.
The preferences for Firefox under File Helpers won't let me name the extension I want; instead, it CONFUSES .qif (Quicken Interchange Format) with .qtif (Quicktime Image Format) for Mac.
Therefore, when I download .qif files and try to import them to Quicken, I get a message that this is a corrupted file:
thanks for any help.
Val in Seattle

Well, in the end, I just gave up and deleted the photos, in the hope that it was something to do with them. Took some more photos and they seem to have imported without any problems at all.
Given that the same irksome photos loaded on the wife's macbook without so much as a murmur, how weird is that?
Still- all's well that ends well. Thanks for the suggestions- much appreciated.

• Image cannot be rendered because Aperture does not support image format

Dear all,
I have installed apple Aperture 3.03 and the complete Nick software plug-in selection:
• Dfine 2.0 for Aperture
• Color Efex Pro 3.0 Complete for Aperture
• Silver Efex Pro for Aperture
• Sharpener Pro 3.0 for Aperture
• Viveza 2 for Aperture
History
Until a few days ago the system was running ok / no notable issues on performance. / all pug in seem to run good / no issues. Also
• I Run OSX10.4/ Aperture 3.03 ( 32Bit mode)
• My library contains just over 10000 images / approximately 140GB
• I have recently updated the OSX software update including the security update 2010-005
• as well as the Snow leopard graphic update 1.0
• As far as I am aware all updates where automatically recommended by OSX Software update ( no manual intervention).
• As far as I remember after update the system still was running ok but honestly I can not tell you how many times the Nick Plug in started out of Aperture.
After all, Several times I continued using the system / still no noticeable problem until the following was happening:
Problem:
After creating with "PT gui" a panoramic image File type: "TIF" Pixel size: 5112 × 2556 (13,1 MP) I imputed this file in to Aperture (drag and drop). During the attempt to eddied this file with "Nick Define 2.0" the system was hamming up No response for several minutes from Dfine 2.0 / Aperture" At the end I had to "force quit" the applications.
After the consequential reopening of Aperture I tried again to eddied images with any Nick software Plug-In but each time Aperture prepares any image previously stored in my Library ti open the Pug in the following Error message appears:
*"This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support the image format"*
Currently non of my previously in the library safed images can be opened in a Nick software Plug-In this applies to all file types I have tied " Raw, tif, jpg"
• I am still able to eddied normally with Aperture ( so far I do not find any other issue)
• A newly imported Raw image after being taken with my EOS 5D can be edited in the completed Nick software Plug-In selection ( so far I do not find any other issue)
The following actions have been taken to overcome the issue (all not successful):
• I restored my Library out of my back Up ( to previous time of event ( no Time machine back up)
• Uninstallation of all Nick software Plug-In selection
• Uninstallation Aperture Reinstallation Aperture / Nick software Plug-In selection
• Repairing the library ( all three possibilities)
• installation of latest EOS utilitys
Questions
• Can you support me to overcome this issue?
• Have you heard similar issues of Nick user Running the Aperture plug-ins?
For me it is really strange that even after replacing the the library in my normally not connect back up the problem still exists (this should be not affected by the event as the back up was not done any more) / new imported images are editable with the Plug-In.
I would be happy if you could support me in this issue.
Best regards,
Matthias
PS: I have reported this issue to Apple (via Aperture feedback) as well as contacted the Nick software support and currently waiting for feedback.

Dear Ma-Le / All
I have just had the same problem
I use
• Aperture 3.03 with a iMac 2.8 Intel Core 2 Duo with all files on external hard disks (mac extended fomat as apple suggests) with referenced masters.
• Camera Nikon D300, with probably 75,000+ images on 2 hard drives
• Photoshop CS2 with PhotoTools 2.5 plugin
This has been working perfectly until yesterday when the system froze when I was using PhotoTools 2.5 with Photoshop CS2 - as a result of which I resorted to a force quit.
Since then on most of my files it has not been possible to use an external editor.
A message appears saying: *Editing Error - This image cannot be rendered for editing because Aperture does not support image format*.
The problem seems to apply to the attempted use of any external editor (including Noise Ninja)
The following have each been tried, all unsuccessfully:
- Using each of Aperture's library 3 first aid options
- Rebuilding directory using Diskwarrior
- Checking for virus using Virus Barrier X4
- Defragmenting library hard disk using TechTool pro
- Changing permissions settings
- Using Disk Utility first aid to repair permissions and checking main disk
- Removing some plist elements when open 'show package contents' of library
- Setting up a(n almost clean) new system, with newly loaded version of Aperture, with a new library from a vault saved prior to the crash when the problem first occured
Several things seem to me to be totally bizarre:
1 - The problem is the same on the other library hard disk which was not in use at the time
2 - The problem still occurs when a back up vault saved prior to this problem is loaded - using a new hard disk with a new system and a newly reloaded and upgraded Aperture software
3- The problem seems inconsistent. It appears to affect some photos but not all. Even from the same shoot, some photos can be edited using an external editor, whilst others cannot (but as far as i can tell most of the photos in a particular album seem to be consistently affected)
4- The only way around it seems to be if I import a new (copy image) from the original master. Then everything works ok, and I can successfully edit that copy image in photoshop / phototools plug-in.
I am beginning to wonder whether what has been corrupted is Aperture's ability to make copies from the master file which it then uses with the external editor (I have no real idea whether this is correct)
Does anyone have any ideas or solutions - or has anyone else been suffering a similar problem?
Eric
PS: As a professional photographer this problem is a really serious issue for me - and I really don't really want to go to Lightroom or Capture One

• Image formats that can be used directly in PDF

Hi,
after severel hours of searching google, discussion boards and the PDF reference, I could not find an answer, so hopefully you guys can help me .
I have written my own little PDF exporter and want to include images. I figured out to include jpegs directly, with the DCTDecode filter.
Are there other image formats, which can be included in PDF directly?
I read somewhere, that GIFs - for example - has to be parsed to get the pixel data and than must be compressed again to be inserted in the PDF file. Therefore it would be easier for me to convert GIF to JPEG with an external program and then insert the JPEG into the PDF. Or is there an advantage, to include the GIF like described above?
What about BMP, TIFF and other image formats?
Is it possible to insert image files lossless into PDF?
I know, lots of questions but i would be really glad if someone can help me .
Thanks in advance,
Regards, Maecky

Hi,
thanks for your answer.
What exactly do you mean with "unwrap"? Should i just get the data without header of the image file and put it into the pdf stream? Otherwise i would have to decompress the format, or am I wrong?
Thanks,
kind regards, maecky

• Convert PDF Page to Image format

Is there any way to convert PDF page to Image formats (like JPG, GIF...)?
I am looking in iTextSharp. If there are other options also, please let me know.

There is a sample included with the Acrobat SDK that shows how to perform conversions of PDFs to other formats. There are also other options available to plug-ins such as PDPageDrawContentsToMemory() and then using an image library of your choice to save the bitmap data into various image formats.
> I am looking in iTextSharp
This is the Acrobat SDK forum - for questions regarding coding using the Acrobat SDK. Have you considered asking this in an iTextSharp forum if you are limiting yourself to that product?

• What raw raster image format in pdf ?

hello,
I understood  from "image xobject in pdf" question from bokhandbok that  an xobject image can be either a jpeg  or a raw raster  format.
But to me,  raw is not a standardized format like DNG or tiff/ep are.
so, where can i find a description of the raw raster image format of the pdf ?
is it related to any existing norms like iso 12234-2, dng, etc.
if not, where can i find a description of this format ?
thanks a lot,
denis

No, an image expects raw bitmap data in the format defined by the PDF Reference.
However, an image is stored as a stream, and a stream can have a filter applied. There are many possible filters and one is DCTDecode, which roughly corresponds to a "JPEG file".
So, an image with JPEG file data and the DCTDecode filter can work.
