Identifying a midlet

Hi,
I want to know if it is possible for a server to identify a midlet connecting to him by html or other?
Onother question, is it possible for this server to update this midlet automatically (without the intervention of the user)
Thanks

Hi,
the question doesn't sound to me too clear.
If there is a client of your application then you have full control of the content, haven't you? So you can insert as many identifiers as you want.
Ad midlet update - there is now push mechanism to update client on mobile. However it's no problem to implement the pull mechanism where the client checks new version on server and opens web browser with a link to new version of the midlet for download and install.

• (Self-)signing a MIDlet for use on ~10 phones without spending money

Hello everyone,
I just spend like 4 hours researching how to sign MIDlet and I am totally confused.
Instead of asking for general instructions I am going to explain what I want to do. Hopefully that will enable people to tell me whether or not this is possible and what steps I should take.
What I want to do:
* I have a MIDlet (JAR+JAD pair), written for J2ME CLDC 1.1/MIDP 2.0
* This program needs to read and write files, as well as access GPS (using the Location API). I have specified the needed permissions in the JAD file (MIDlet-Permissions and MIDlet-Permissions-Opt)
* The end goal is to be able to run this program on a limited number (<=10) of phones. All phones are Nokia handsets running S60 3rd Ed. FP1/2. They are owned by my organisation so the IMEI numbers are known
* And now for the important thing: the program should not throw runtime warnings when files are accessed or the location API is used
* Because this is an entirely non-commercial thing the whole process should not cost me any money
So far I've been testing this application on a single Nokia N95-2 (8GB). Because the MIDlet is unsigned (or at least I believe that is why) it throws lots of runtime warnings (concerning file access and location access, eg: "Allow application X to read user data?" YES/NO). So this is exactly what I need to avoid when deploying this program on the ~10 other phones.
I understand that it is most likely impossible to achieve this with a single "signed" file that can be deployed on all 10 phones. However, supposing there is some free(!) "(self-)signing" procedure that produces a MIDlet that will work without the runtime warnings on a specific phone (identified by IMEI#), I am perfectly willing to go through this procedure for every phone/IMEI involved.
So is this possible? And if so, what are the steps I should take. Please give me as much info as possible. I've been googling for hours and I ave yet to find a decent explanation for a scenario like this.
Thanks in advance!

It is my understanding (from posts on other forums) that the procedure explained on that webpage ( [http://browndrf.blogspot.com|http://browndrf.blogspot.com] ) only works/worked on Nokia S60 2nd edition devices, due to a bug (or feature?) in Nokia's MIDP implementation. In the 3rd edition of the S60 platform this bug was fixed so the procedure no longer works.
As for my own project, we bit the bullet and got ourselves a Verisign certificate after all (for a whooping $500). So the problem is solved, although it wasn't exactly cheap.
Thanks for your helpful comments.
Regards,
M.S.

• Midlet - Application prompts me

Hello, I have made an midlet applicationen that uses GPS and PushRegistry. My problem is that the Application prompts me for security reasons, every time it starts automatically and every time it uses GPS. (The application can't be used if i does that).
How can I avoid the phone prompts me? Please help me.
Will it help with a Code Signing certificates or will I still be prompted?

Hi X999 !
1) have u added following API permissions in the JAD ?
MIDlet-Permissions: javax.microedition.io.PushRegistry, javax.microedition.location.Location
2) Check whether your jar is signed properly.
After signing the app, you can open the JAD using a text editor and see something like this..
MIDlet-Certificate-1-1: MIIE8DCCA9ig......
MIDlet-Certificate-1-2: MIIEvzCCBCigAwIBAgI.......
MIDlet-Jar-RSA-SHA1: mFmUFyx0wQlAwl6O4GRRjAKWh2LM07ZEdR....
or some time... there will be individual RSA- digest for every class in MANIFEST.MF .. you have to extract the jar and see..
3)
X999 wrote: Why can't I select "Never Ask" for internet, GPS, PushReg - as I can with the RecordStore? Is this problem phone dependent?Permission to access APIs depends on followings.
a) is MIDlet suite untrusted (Unidentified Third Party Protection Domain) .
b) is MIDlet suite signed and Protection domains of MIDlet suite one of followings ( usually Identified Third Party, it can be Operator, Manufacturer).
c)A set of Allowed and User permissions that may be granted to a MIDlet suite.
d)A set of permissions that the user may authorize (User); each with its user interaction mode.
e)User Permission Interaction Modes.. this is what you can set in the application security in the phone
like, ask never, ask once, ask every time...
and the reason for why you can select "Never Ask" for internet, GPS, PushReg - as I can with the RecordStore is because.. MIDP 2.1 spec says..
The untrusted domain for untrusted MIDlet suites MUST allow, without explicit confirmation by the user,access to: javax.microedition.rms, javax.microedition.midlet, javax.microedition.lcdui, javax.microedition.media. {color:#ff0000}So, there is nothing special about whether you can select more options like never ask in user permission interaction modes. {color}
And MIDP 2.1 spec says..
The untrusted domain for untrusted MIDlet suites MUST allow, with explicit confirmation by the user, access to protected APIs or functions:javax.microedition.io.HttpConnection, javax.microedition.io.HttpsConnection.You can notice one point here, {color:#ff0000}because of this reason, there is no never ask option here.{color}
more over, MIDP 2.1 spec says..
A MIDlet suite that requires access to protected APIs or functions must request the corresponding permissions.
Permissions requested can be required by listing the permissions in the attribute MIDlet-Permissions. These permissions are critical to the function of the MIDlet suite and it will not operate correctly without them.If the MIDlet suite can function correctly with or without particular permission(s) it should request them using the MIDlet Permissions-Opt attribute.And {color:#ff0000}access to protected APIs depends on sensitivity of the API {color}(will you allow a signed app to send SMS without your permission) {color:#ff0000}and protected domain{color}.So you will not have never ask options in user permission interaction modes.

• Network simulator for j2me midlet

i need to test my protoype j2me midlet over 3g network conditions,but dont have the hardware. is there such a 3g nework simulator around? i heard of something called OMNeT++ but i dont think this is what i need,
cheers

Everybody knows what is PC and what is simulator and who runs whom! You are not adding any more sugar to the coffee. May be I misunderstood his first post that's why I was trying to get the original picture. But if you identified after his first post that what exactly he was looking for then why did you come after the 9th post? That's why my post 3 was like that.
Now let me tell you one thing may sound little bitter but I should say that try to stick to the topic. If you really have something in your knowledge to help him then try to help him. Pulling my legs you are not at all going to achieve anything :-> but if you can show him some lights then for sure it will be valuable for him and you can achieve those DUKES !!!
And one more thing I want to add that post 10 is not also very meaningful.

• MIDlet Property in Application Descriptor?

Hi all,
I am trying to run one simple MIDlet on mobility pack of NetBean 5.
I want to set property called ImageLoader-URL in application descriptor to avaoid recompilation on change of url for image.
How would I do that in NetBeans Mobile project?
My code is as follows.
try {
//String url = getAppProperty("ImageLoader-URL");
String url = "http://www.ekameleon.net/blog/themes/daclear/smilies/alien.png";
hc = (HttpConnection)Connector.open(url);

I don't believe there is a built-in mechanism for that.
But you can easily do it yourself. In you AM class:
public void prepareSession( Session session ) {
super.prepareSession( session );
setDatabaseClientInfo( Bc4jConstants.APPLICATION_NAME );
setDatabaseModuleInfo( moduleInfo );
}And then:
public void setDatabaseClientInfo( String clientInfo ) {
try {
this.getTransaction( ).executeCommand(
"BEGIN dbms_application_info.set_client_info('" + clientInfo + "'); END;" );
} catch( Exception e ) {
// uncritical error
log.warn( "Error setting the database client info: " + clientInfo, e );
}and
public void setDatabaseModuleInfo( String moduleInfo ) {
if( moduleInfo != null ) {
try {
this.getTransaction( ).executeCommand( "BEGIN dbms_application_info.set_module('"
+ moduleInfo + "', NULL); END;" );
} catch( Exception exception ) {
// uncritical error
log.warn( "Error setting the database module info: " + moduleInfo, exception );
}In a similar fashion you can set the client identifier. We use the moduleInfo to identify the module of the session. The client info helps us to identify the application.

• KeyLock on a Midlet

Hello to everyone...
I'm developing an open source application for a University project. It's a mobile midlet that can record videos on a device. I would like to know if it's possible to lock some keys. I'll try to explain my request: this application must run on a pubblic device, so i would prefer that nobody could shutdown the application and access to the phone menù.
The application must autorun when the phone turns on, and the only way to close it should be when the phone is turned off. In order to do this, it's necessary to lock some keys like the red button or the menù button (for Nokia phones) and, moreover, disable all exits command in the midlet menù, so what i'm asking you is:
it's possible to lock just few button? how i could identify the specific button?
Thank you all in advance,
Best Regards
Marco

It would depend on how you set your CommandListeners..
Normally, you would do..
canvas1.setCommandListener(canvas1);
canvas2.setCommandListener(canvas2);
In this case, they would not interfere.
However, if you do..
canvas1.setCommandListener(canvas2);
or something like that.. then you might get the behaviour as you have
mentioned.

• Security domains for midlets

Hi
I was doing some investigation on security domains for midlets. There are 4 security domains like
1. third party protection domain (untrusted 3rd party)
2. identified third party protection domain (trusted 3rd party)
3.     operator protection domain
4.     manufacturer protection domain
I have signed a midlet and it is in 2 nd security domain, but still there are some restrictions for API usage, for example everytime push message arrives user is prompted to start application or not, I want to avoid it. Do you have any idea how can I do that, or do you know how can get my midlet into 3 rd or 4 th security domains. Has anyone done this before?
Any help will be appreciated...

Please note that a realm is a domain for a set of security features. A
realm organizes security information and defines its range of
operations. Please go through the documentation:
http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61/security/concepts.html#1035144
for a discussion of security realms. Please go through the
documentation:
http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61//adminguide/cnfgsec.html#1052314 which
describes the configuration of different security realms.
Please inform whether the above information is helpful.

• How do I identify an iTunes Library that isn't named on my WAN?

You'd think people wouldn't be so secretive!
we have 800 employees at work and
about 1/2 have iTunes ( mix of Macs and PCs).
They all share their libraries up for others to listen,

Is there a way to identify who's Mac at least is hosting which
library? Short of calling everyone in the plant that is?

When you go to Settings>Store can you sign out and sign in with your ID?
That should work with purchasing new apps. It is likely that the other users purchased apps with his account. You have to log into the account that purchased apps to update them. If you have apps that need updating that were purchased from more than one account, you have to update the apps one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased with one account.

• How can you identify when a RP has a bootflash failure on CRS-1?

Hi Everyone,
I am hoping someone can assist me in identifying when a RP has a bootflash issue and requires RMA. We have some CRS-1 running in our network with IOS XR 3.8.2 and some with 4.0.3. All the commands that I am aware of do not identify when a RP has a problem in bootflash. CCO recommends that if there is a problem with upgrade and you are moving to a code using filesystem fat 32 that you format the bootflash of the RP's. It was at this point we started having issues. We went into ROMMON and recieved the following error.
rommon B1 > dir bootflash:disk0/hfr-os-mbi-4.0.3 Checksum failed on hfr-fslib-m
Expected checksum: 6a53, calculated checksum: beba
open: file "hfr-fslib-m" not found
loadprog: error - on file open
cannot load the monitor library "bootflash:%hfr-fslib-m" from device
If someone has some insight on how we can validate the state of the RP outside of the typical command set:
show redundancy summary
show platform
etc
I'd appreciate it.
Cheers,
Rashmi

Hi,
Provide some more information on your problem.
If you want to check the directory contect try
dir bootflash:
is it displaying any output?
In general above error doesn't indicate that there is any problem but it is not able to find particular directory or file.
Thanks

Hi,
The service is responsible for applying settings configured by administrators for the computer and users through the Group Policy component. This issue can be caused by various reasons based on the computer environment.
Can you find any information in event log about this issue?
Here is the related blog in which the steps can solve most of such issues if the issue continuously happen.

public class Test {
public static String حرمان = "This is nice.";
public static void main(String[] argv) { System.out.println(حرمان); }
}The variable there is in Arabic coding. Here is the command used to compile it:
javac -encoding UTF-16 Test.javaHere is the output:
java TestThis is nice.
So, it does work. (Though I had never tried before just now...)

My scenario is this. I have five r3 systems that I am extracting from. In the start routine of the transformation from the r3 data source to my data store I am going to delete data and I need to know the source system id. How do I identify the logical system or source system id in the transformation. Is there a system field that contains this information. I do not want to hard code the source system id in the routine.

hi
have a lool at tables rsreqdone and rsbkrequest with a join you should be able to determine the source.
regards
Boujema

• Identifying user from a PL/SQL procedure

I need to identify which user is executing the procedure..
Is there a way we can do this?

Got the soln.
currentUser varchar(30);
Execute Immediate('Select user fom dual') into currentUser;
Now u can use 'currentUser' in the procedure which identifies the user..
Correct me if there are any concurrency issues with this?
