IDVD and widescreen

Ok....so when i download the .avi file in widescreen it shows up without the black bars, just the 16x9 widescreen image itself. A few months ago I used iSquint to convert the .avi file to .mp4. I would then use a program called ReelBeen to wisescreen the video. Making the full image 4:3 with the full 1:85:1 widescreen image inside with the black bars. This was the best way to widescreen stuff for iDVD 5. Well, now ReelBeen isn't free anymore......so does anyone out there know of any FREE video programs to widescreen videos with the black bars so i can burn iDVD 5 in widescreen again?

Probably the most logical solution (and easiest) is to just set the HDTV for 4:3 viewing! ??

  • IDVD AND WIDESCREEN HDTV

I have made a number of iDVD"s starting with still images in iPhoto ->iMovie->iDVD->disc img. and burn. Have been reasonably happy with the playback results of these when shown on a regular
(4:3?) TV. Recently purchased a wide screen HDTV and although the screen is filled, there is distortion. People look short and FAT. How can I correct for this? Have looked for solutions but can't seem to find anything.

  • Idvd #8 and widescreen still doesnt work!?

ok, i shot some HDV 1080i, downconverted it as sd widescreen, edited in imovie as widescreen, exported using quicktime as 16X9 853X480 dv video, imported that into idvd widescreen, and the preview shows 4X3. HOW HARD IS IT FOR THIS TO WORK CORRECTLY? Does apple actually expect us to all just buy apple tv's instead?
    come on now...
    thanks for any help.

I just updated to iDVD 08
I have anamorphic 16x9 QuickTime .MOV files I created from my Final Cut Pro project file. These do not appear as widescreen in a WS iDVD project. That started all of this.
I've created a new copy of the video using Anamorphicizer -- no luck
When I run idvd-ws-fix from terminal,
I created an image file from iDVD and mounted the image file as TEST_DVD. In terminal I ran the script:
    /Applications/idvd-ws-fix-1.1/idvd-ws-fix --output=my-new-disc.img "/Volumes/TEST_DVD"
Copying VTS files to temporary directory.
/Applications/idvd-ws-fix-1.1/mkisofs: Warning: -follow-links does not always work correctly; be careful.
    2.95% done, estimate finish Sat Jan 19 11:11:00 2008
    5.90% done, estimate finish Sat Jan 19 11:10:43 2008
The script ran fine and created my-newl-disc.img in the applications folder where I had stored the script folder.
HOWEVER, when I mounted the new image and played it in the MAC DVD player, my anamorphic video was still crushed to 4x3. Very frustrating.
I then opened a .IFO file form the new image TS_VIDEOS directory in HexEdit. When I look at 00000200 all I see is a row of zeros.
Next, I mounted the image again and copied both TS directories into a test directory. I changed permissions in both AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directories to read & write, apply to everything (requires your user password to confirm).
I opened the VVIDEO_TS directory in myDVDEdit. I edited: VMG Menu; VTS Menu 1; and VTS 1. In each case, using the VMG or VTS menu tab, I changed Aspect from Auto pan Pan&Scan Letterbox to 16x9 for both VMG Menu and VTS Menu; and from 4x3 to 16x9 for VTS 1. myDVDEdit stated that the video aspect ratio is not the sasme as the stream one. Do you want to correct the VOB files? I hit CORRECT.
When I opened the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD player, my anamorphic video finally played wide screen.
I ran this test again from a new disk image created from iDVD. I mounted the image, copied the TS directories in to a second test folder, changed permissions on both TS directories, then opened the new test directory in myDVDEdit. I made all the changes noted above and hit SAVE.
I opened the new test VIDEO_TS directory in DVD player and my anamorpohic video played wide screen.
I believe I had tried this before with no luck because I failed to change VTS 1 to 16x9.
Next I burned a DVD from the image file using Disk Utility.
When I played it with DVD player -- back to square one! The anamorpohic video played squished as 4x3. Did the same when I played it on my setup DVD player attached to a 4x3 crt TV.
I opened the VTS01O.IF, in HexEdit, scrolled down to 00000200 and found the first entry was 4F. I changed this to 4E and saved the file. Did the same for BTS010.BUP. I left the VIDEO_TS.IFO file set to 00
I then burned a new DVD. No luck.
Please add your findings to this thread.

  • TV safe area and widescreen

I have a question about the TV safe area using iDVD 6. I uploaded my video into imovie then shared to iDVD and chose a 6.0 theme called "shelves" and changed my project to widescreen 16:9. I didn't bother choosing TV safe area and made my project and burned. I tried it on a widescreen TV and some of my titles and video are off the screen as well as some of the shelves in the menu. I'm new to this and I just assumed that with a widescreen TV I wouldn't have to use the TV safe area. Is this where I've gone wrong? Do you still have to enable TV safe area even for widescreen TV's?

I think I've totally confused you LOL! I used "shelves" in iDVD...which is a widescreen theme already...isn't it?
Also, when I shared from imovie to iDVD I didn't lose anything...I didn't do anything to the clips other than drag them onto the timeline in imovie and add chapter markers in imovie. I didn't use any transitions or any titles etc etc...just dragged clips down as they were when I uploaded them. Then saved and shared to iDVD...chose the theme "shelves" and it prompted me with the aspect ratio thing. After all said and done...now my titles are off the screen (which I made in iDVD) and my pictures are off the screen (which I put into drop zones etc). I didn't think I'd have to use the TV safe area but maybe I'm going to have to do that and reburn.
I hope this is clearer to you now. I hate calling Apple and waiting on hold forever

  • IDVD and DVD Studio Pro hang and crash since 10.5.6 update

Seems like there are a lot of problems since this 10.5.6 update... I came here b/c of a prob with iDVD and DVD Studio Pro not working anymore. Was just trying to "Share/Export" an iMovie project to iDVD (and then tried again with DVD Studio Pro) and the program just hung and crashed and also wouldn't let me Restart or Shutdown very easily either. What gives?

Have you tried to reset the SMU/PRAM?

DVD's are only 640 x 480 (interlaced), so yes, the quality is not nearly as good.  You should probably create your .mov in DV format to best match the DVD format

I am trying to send an iMovie project to iDVD and I keep getting the following error msg.  "Unable to prepare subject for publishing:  The project could not be prepared for publishing because an error occurred. (-43)"

    Check out this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1421870
It may mean you either your Event or your Project. Have you moved any of the files in the Finder by any chance? That error may come up if you moved anything outside of iMovie. Do you get an error message when you choose Share>Export to iMovie (choose medium size) and save it to the Desktop? If you can export it to the desktop, you can pull that file into iDVD separately and still make it work.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I was having problems burning DVDs' fro iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK?

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

  • Installed iDVD and now I have lost iPhoto

I have an iMac 27" late 2013. I was wanting to burn some dvd's and installed iDVD, while working with iDVD I received a notice that iPhoto could not be opened because it may be damaged or incomplete...Can I get it back???

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Who can help me, then I cann't find everything about this in any forum?

    Hi
Can be a problem that get multiplied and visible when iDVD encode for DVD.
    A. See if problem can be isolated to a single frame in the movie and re-import this clip and see if it's better
    B. When free space on Start-Up hard disk goes low - strange things like this might occure. I never go under 25Gb free space on this Start-Up Mac OS hard disk !
    C. Does this problem arises what ever encoding quality You use ?

  • From iMovie I select share iDVD, and then mouse spins forever in iDVD

from iMovie I select share iDVD, and then mouse spins forever......
Note: this only occurs for one of my movies, because the other iMovie projects open iDVD ok. I have also tried an archived copy of this movie and the same problem occurs. I notice in the backgound that iMovie is access iDVD for a long time (2-3 minutes), and then I can access iMovie again. However iDVD spins the mouse forever until I Option-Apple-Escape and end iDVD.
    I am running:
    iMovie Ver.# 6.03(267.2) and
    iDVD Ver.# 6.04(797)
    1) Is the problem iMovie or iDVD or the specific iMovie file which could be corrupted? Should I try and export this corrupted iMovie file into another file name?
    2) Can I reset the preferences for iMovie and iDVD? And how do I do that?
    3) Can I re-install iMovie and/or iDVD, and do I use my original DVD?

    Hi
    a. I don't ever use the Share/Export to iDVD from within iMovie.
    I do.
    • close iMovie
    • open iDVD
    • Import or just drop the movie into iDVD
    b. Clearing iDVD
    • Delete iDVD pref file
    • Start iDVD
    • Start a new project
    Else read.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows:*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy: Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match: iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match: iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iDVD pref file resides: Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named:
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
Last resort: from Craig: Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.

  • Standard video and widescreen on same disc?

Is it possible to burn a standard and widescreen movie on the same disc?
    Thanks

iDvd asks that you make a choice between one or the other from the onset of your project. So you're pretty much forced to decide between one or the other. However, it's possible DVDSP (part of Apple's FCS) may provide more choices in this regard.
