If I update from OS X 4.1 to OS X 6.8 will I be able to run software I was using on my defunct MacBook Pro running OS X 8?

If I update from OS X 4.1 to OS X 6.8 will I be able to run various software I was using on my defunct MacBook Pro running OS X 8?

It depends on whether or not the program supports 10.6.8. Some commercial software may need to be reinstalled from the original media/downloads.

  • From about this Mac -Storage, my only HDD is full. there are 144 GB on Backups. How find and delete it. Macbook pro running Maverick OS X.

Hi,  From about this Mac, my only HDD is full. When I have clicked and opened Storage screen when I've saw that there are 144 GB on Backups. I don't know which backup is it. and I really need help to find and delete it. I have Macbook pro running Maverick OS X.
I have a external HDD for time machine, but this backup I didn't know yet.
Please pleople... someone could help me?  I'm in troubles.

Linc Davis,  According below:  could I delete those snapshots from MobileBackups folder?   would it solve my problem? ( if I want not my HDD 80% full)     - Thank you a lot in advance.
Ordinarily, the best way to view your Local snapshots is via the normal Time Machine display, perquestion #15.  If for some reason that's not working, you can see them via the Finder.
From a Finder menubar, select Go > Go to Folder and type /Volumes in the prompt, and select theMobileBackups folder.   You'll see the same structure as for Time Machine backups on a separate volume:  a Backups.backupdb folder containing a folder for your Mac, which contains a time-stamped folder for each snapshot.  Inside each of those is a folder for each disk/partition that was backed-up, containing the same folder structure as on the original, with the contents as of the time of the backup.
Note that nothing in the size column is meaningful (if you Get Info on the MobileBackups folder, for example, it will show the total amount of space on the drive it's on!   It will show dashes for the Backups.backupdb folder, or any of the dated snapshot folders).

  • I updated from Snow Leorard to Moutain Lion and now my internet will not recognise  my password. All other comps use the network but my Mac upgraded Mac Mini keeps coming up with either 'timeout' or 'user or password not recognised' ...help!

    Hello all
I upgraded from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion OS and now my Wifi will not work. When I try and insert the password to my Wifi network states either 'connection timed out' or 'password and/or user name not recognised' please help...!

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
    Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts.
    Step 4
    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.
    Step 5
You may need to change other settings on the router. See the guidelines linked below:
Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    Potential sources of interference
    Step 6
Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

I have a macbook pro running snow leopard. Just recently I cannot view youtube videos and other online videos. I recently updated my flashplayer plugin and I believe that is the problem. Is the latest flashplayer plugin compatible with 10.6.8? If this is so, I need to find an older flash player plugin to reinstall. I do not want to upgrade from 10.6.8 at this time because I have 18 yrs. worth of financial records on Quicken that I have read will not work with Lion and I've read bad things about running music programs on Maverick.

    1)  Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) is a full featured app that can be downloaded from Intuit for $15 and will work with your data file if you are using Quicken 2005, 2006 or 2007 (if you version is earlier, let me know for more instructions on easy conversion):
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
    2) Partition your hard drive, or add an external hard drive and install Mavericks there and "dual-boot" to operate your music programs in Snow Leopard and experiment with them in Mavericks.
DO NOT install Mavericks over Snow Leopard!

  • Upgraded from 10.6.8 to Mavericks last week on my MacBook Pro running the 2.4 GHz i5 and it's painfully slow on start-up- I mean, 5 minutes or more, to be fully functional... Is this normal?

Upgraded from 10.6.8 to Mavericks last week on my MacBook Pro running the 2.4 GHz i5 and it's painfully slow on start-up- I mean, 5 minutes or more, to be fully functional... Is this normal?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • How do I migrate files from MacBook running OS 10.4.11 to new MacBook Pro running OS 10.6? Thanks.

How do I migrate files from my MacBook (specs below) to my still in the box MacBook Pro running OS 10.6?  Yesterday, I ran Software Update; it returned the message that all my software was up to date / no updates available.
I am particularly concerned with moving the 7000+ photos in iPhoto.  I have photos organized into folders and albums and want to preserve this structure.  I use this photo data as part of my lecture content.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • I have a new macbook pro running lion and want to update the software on my ipod touch. My old macbook ran 10.4.11 and won't update - but the new computer says I have to update on the computer I normally sync on or my music will be lost. Solution?

I have a new macbook pro running lion and want to update to ios 5 on my ipod touch.  My old macbook only has 10.4.11 and can't be updated to lion - and won't update my ipod touch to ios 5.  But the message on my new macbook pro says I have to update on the computer I normally use for syncing or my music will be lost.  Is there any solution for this?

try exporting your iTunes libary from the old computer to the new one
take a look at this from apple

I am not sure you have home shareing with 10.4.11 but if you do it works very nicely

  • MacBook Pro running updates won't startup, even in Safe Mode

I ran some software updates on my MacBook Pro running Lion and when it restarts it has a striped screen and says 'You need to restart your computer.' It won't even allow me to restart in Safe Mode. Any ideas?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • How to transfer contacts from MacBook Pro Retina to old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8?

How do I transfer my latest updated contacts from my MacBook Pro Retina running 10.9.1 which uses the cloud to my old Macbook Pro running 10.5.8 which is not in the cloud?

Thank you very much, Linc, for your suggestion.  I should have mentioned one other thing.  The reason I want to do this is that I use an old phone and, after I upgraded to Mavericks, Missing Sync no longer worked with my MacBook Pro Retina - so my address book in my phone is getting out of date.  Because my phone is old (it's a Palm Centro), they apparently will not likely update their software for this phone.  So I was thinking I could sync my phone with my old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 if I could regularly get that old address book to mirror contacts in my new MacBook Pro.  You said I could open the contacts in the old MacBook by double-clicking the vCard file. But will that action put them into the old address book on the old Mac so that I could then sync the phone to it? I really need to overwrite the address book in the old Mac with the info that I am bringing over from the new MacBook.
I'd be grateful if you could tell me whether what I want to do is doable.  This old phone works perfectly well and I don't need a new phone with a data plan that I would pay for but never use.
    Thanks!
Note - I accidentally indicated that my response solved my question.  I clicked the wrong box.  Linc is the one who solved the problem.

  • This Question is at least 2.5 years old.  But still an issue.  I have an early 2008 and mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro running iTunes 10.7.  Itunes on both machines doesn't recognize blank cds or allow me to import from a music cd when I insert it.

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

  • I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.

I have a late 2011 model MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.  I love the AirPlay mirroring feature with Apple TV...BUT, how do I mirror with TVs that don't have Apple TV?  I used to run a cable from my mini display port to the HDMI input of a TV.  This feature seems to be lost in the Mountain Lion upgrade.  Did Apple feel that once Mountain Lion came out that EVERYONE would have Apple TV?  There are no settings in System Preferences/Display like there used to be...only for AirPlay Mirroring.

Running a cable to the HDMI port is still supported. (and still works on mine).
If the Arrangement tab in System Preferences > Displays isn't present then it doesn't recognize the physical connection.  Double check all cables.  If that doesn't work try a PRAM reset:

I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX6.8 and cannot upgrade. I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS6. Well, InDesign is the only one that works and I have a ton of work due! I don't have a serial number for Photoshop or Illustrator except for CS3, and they don't work. InDesign gave me no problems. Illustrator says it can't work on this machine. Photoshop needs a serial number. I'm stumped and getting anxious and freaked out. Can anyone help? Adobe Chat is down right now.

if you have a cc subscription, close ps > sign out and then back in to your cc desktop > open ps.
    ai cs6 requires:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 and v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems.*

The ipod is not a backup/storage device.
You need to copy everything from your old computer to your new one.
The Apple store will do this for you,  you can call apple support and they will help you, you can use google.
