Illegal start of expression while using "protected"

class pTest{
     public static void main(String arg[]){
                                System.out.println("hi");
          protected int i=10;
          System.out.println(i);
}when i run this i am getting
" illegal start of expression" what's wrong here

but now it is a different case where i am trying to access a protected variable to the other class but i am getting following error.
cannot make a static reference to non-static field fieldNumberbut here the first class sample code is
public class ISOField
    extends ISOComponent
    implements Cloneable, Externalizable
    protected int fieldNumber;
    protected String value;
.and my accessing class is as below
public class UJposMsgs extends ISOField {
     public static void main(String arg[]) {
     ISOField mkeys = new ISOField();
          int fnumber = fieldNumber;
          String val = value;
