Illustrator to Flash Gradient Conversion Madness

I can't figure this out. Occasionally Flash converts
gradients imported from Illustrator into bitmaps no matter what I
seem to do. It's funky because there will be the exact same
gradients on different shapes that will be converted to a drawing
object instead (which I like). I've tried exporting as a swf, and
just copy and pasting right into CS4.
There doesn't seem to be any logical reason why this is
happening. Does anyone else have any experience with this and an
answer to this problem?

Thanks for all of your replies. _E_ , what I was referring to
was not drop shadows but actual color gradients within the shape. I
actually found the solution several minutes ago. I need to be able
to create the gradients in Illustrator because I am creating
characters and scenes for animation and it's just more efficient to
do it that way. Especially if I need the vector versions of the
characters for other purposes such as print. Bringing vector
characters or objects into Illustrator from Flash isn't a very
clean process and I like my stuff as clean as possible.
Here's what caused the problem:
(Note: I'm using Adobe CS4)
In Illustrator CS4 Adobe has greatly improved what you can do
with the gradients. When you select a shape that has a gradient you
can modify the gradient right from within the shape, a lot like
Flash. You can ALSO offset the center of a radial gradient by
pulling on a little dot just off from the center of the gradient.
THIS is what Flash didn't like. Other radial gradients of the same
shape and color were imported into Flash perfectly just by pasting
them in from Illustrator. But it converted these offset radial
gradients to bitmaps, probably because Flash cannot do that
particular calculation. So anyway, this is something to be aware of
for sure.

Me too, but it seems that Illustrator has really improved in
this regard with CS4.

You could always create your gradients in actionscript:

Would that help?
That's really cool, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for
in this particular case.

Personally, I always use as much as Flash can provide for
drawn elements--very low weight on the file-size side of things.
But to each his own... (I've never been fond of any of Adobe's
graphic software offerings--the non-Macromedia ones).
I do a lot of illustration - more illustration than
animation. Illustrator, for me, is a superior tool for creating
some of the highly complex, precision illustration work that I do.
There are a lot of specific tools that I absolutely need that
Illustrator offers, plus, much of my stuff also goes to print, and
Flash is not designed for what Illustrator can do. But like you
said, to each his own, we all have different types of workflow and
it's great that there are so many tools we can use exclusively or
interchange at will.
Well, everything looks like it's working fine, but I don't
know if I'm out of the woods yet! I still have a lot more scenes to
get into Flash! Thank you all for your help and insights!

  • What is the best practices workflow from illustrator to flash in cs 6?

    Hello- question from an illustrator to flash workflow n00b.
    I'm creating a flash experience with animated characters.
    I'm building my art assets in illustrator.
    I've found it relatively easy & straightforward to import assets from illustrator into flash.
    I can conveniently import my layers and symbols from illustrator as separate layers and symbols in flash and manipulate them.
    However, let's say after import I want to change something with an asset using illustrator. For example, I have a character with facial features, including eyes. I want to change the eyes in illustrator and have those changes then be propogated in some way- automagically or manually- in flash.
    What is the right way to do this? Are there best practices for being able to go back and forth between flash and illustrator?
    Thank you!

    Thanks for the reply Suhas.
    I guess the answer to my question is that there is no good way. In the photoshop/illustrator workflow, I can paste a document from illustrator into photoshop and then double-click it in photoshop to open it back up in illustrator and edit the original. I have seen posts on people doing this between Flash and Illustrator with the now-discontinued Flash Catalyst- a process that was apparently called round-tripping. Ideally, this is the functionality I'd like to have between Flash and Illustrator but I take it from your reply that the answer is 'Does not exist.'

  • Import from illustrator to flash not working (PNG/SWF)

    I spent 2 days making some lovely pictures in illustrator,
    all ready to go into flash. I first exported them into PNG from
    illustrator and tried importing that that way but after clicking OK
    nothing appeared on the stage or in the library. There were no
    error messages. I then tried exporting from illustrator in swf
    format. This time the picture appeared on the stage, with
    associated symbols etc. in the library, but when I came to publish
    the movie, the picture wasn't there at all. I finally tried copying
    and pasting from illustrator. This simply crashed flash every time.
    Has this happened to anyone else before? Or does anyone have
    any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how i could go
    about resolving it? Any help greatly appreciated. I'm begging for
    your help. Thanks.
    Adobe Illustrator CS2, Flash 8, Mac. (Png attached)

    This never happened to me.
    I use Illustrator 10 and Flash 8 Pro.
    Don't use .png (too heavy files).
    Use, as you did, export .swf in Illustrator.
    But be careful with export parameters!
    Which ones did you use?
    In Flash, did you group the parts and convert them to a
    symbo

  • How to get color group from illustrator into flash

    Hi,
    I have difficulties with the color management between Illustrator and Flash.
    I have the original vector files in Illustrator and would like to use the color groups, I have in Illustrator, also in Flash.
    One way doing it is using the Kuler.
    But I can not get the colors from Illustrator into Kuler.
    Can someone advice how to manage that process?
    Many thanks in advance!

    I'm fairly new to this having only recently started using these tools again after six years, but will try to help! Go to "Explore", find a theme you like and click the "Edit" selection when you mouse over it. From there you can edit it or save a copy of it as is as whatever name you wish. In Photoshop or Illustrator, they will now show up in Adobe Color Themes (Window > Extensions > Adobe Color Themes) under "All Themes" in the drop menu. In these apps (and others that are Adobe Color Theme aware), any themes that you favorite on the site will show up under "My Favorites".
    If you're using Fireworks, it's different as it still uses Kuler (Window > Extensions > Kuler).  Themes you save or favorite on the site don't automatically show up there, however you can search for themes by name, and if you select "Custom" from the theme group dropdown, you can enter up to four names that will show up in that dropdown menu and produce as many results as the window can hold for an individual term. For instance, I saved a theme as "Copy of Industrial Calm" which if I enter in the search box, the "group" is a group of one. However, if I just type "Industrial", the window fills with options, yet there are MANY more results on the Adobe Color site and you would have to be specific to get the right one in that window.
    Hope that helps.

  • Going from Illustrator into Flash

    I tried asking in the Flash forum, though I received no response.
    When copying-and-pasting symbols from Illustrator into Flash CS5:
    1. Does it make a difference if you paste on the main stage in Flash or create
    a new symbol first and paste it there?
    2. After pasting on the stage two separate symbols, I get two separate
    folders called FlashAICB with a subfolder called Illustrator Symbols
    containing my copied symbol. Can I move the two symbols together into
    the same folder? Can I change the name of the FlashAICB folder?
    Will this cause any problems?
    Thanks!

    1)If you copy/paste an object from illustrator to flash as is, it will be an object in flash and certain operations require the object to be a symbol which can be done by hitting F8. This is the same thing as creating a symbol in illustrator first.
    2)Right clicking on the symbols will let you move the symbols to the root or another folder or even a new folder. Think of the folders as organizers.

  • Illustrator or Flash or Toon boom or.......

    Hi everybody!
    I am a newbie in digital illustration and animation. I believe my question has been asked million times before, but I ask it because I don know what to do anymore.
    Could someone advice me on what software would be the best for making some illustrations (that could be used for children books and similar) and also for using this illustrations step further to make some simple cut out or frame to frame animations/cartoons.
    Another thing- can Toon boom (studio or animate or some other version) be used for illustration, maybe instead of Adobe illustrator?  Is it posssible that Adobe Flash, Illustrator and After Effects at some basic level do the same thing as Toon Boom ? Are the differences felt mostly bey professionals who do some hi-polished animations or illustrations?
    For the last 7 days I have been reading numerous articles and reviews but I am still confused and beginning to be half crazy.
    Thank you all in advance --

    I'm late to the discussion - but maybe this will be useful to others looking for software to produce animation. I believe any good program which allows you a lot of creative ability is going to have a steep learning curve. The comments below are based on my experience; yours may be different.
    I couldn't agree more about Toon Boom. I downloaded the trial, went to the tutorials, and was astonished at the amount of time required by these videos to get any idea how the program worked. Be prepared to invest a couple of days. Also, the tutorials are for the more expensive versions of the program, and so if you're interested in Toon Boom Studio you might might find them somewhat confusing, as not all the options they talk about are available on the cheaper version. Looking at the on-line documentation is MUCH more helpful than the tutorials they offer. It walks you through so you can actually get a taste for the program. Toon Boom will also import Illustrator files which look like the originals (unlike the next program I talk about).
    I've used Anime Studio Pro (by Smith Micro) for several months and found the interface unintuitive and, at times, very frustrating. It can produce a great final product, and if you can get past the drawing interface, which, to me, is very quirky (I'm used to Adobe Illustrator), it's a nice program. The manual is helpful, but not great - which means you're stuck with surfing the web for tutorials and the forums (not necessarily a bad thing - just be aware). It's built in physics capability is really nice - clothes, hair, and other things can be made to react to a character's movement automatically, but it takes a lot of experimentation to get it to to work correctly. If you want to import files, it will, but only rasterized and limited vector (You have to save down to Illustrator 8 to import from Illustrator, and the vectors don't look as clean as the original). It's better to build vector art in the program, but, again, this can be frustrating until you learn the oddities of the program. The bone system allows you to connect bones to individual or a group vector points, or can be made to manipulate raster images. Many people produce great stuff with this program and love it, but I found it too frustrating and starting looking for something else.
    After seeing some of Daniel Gies's work produced in After Effects I decided to try it out. Right away I was happier because I could import Illustrator and Photoshop files (programs I've used for a long time) directly into AE and they looked exactly like the originals (as well as layers retaining their names and locations). The vector files are rasterized, but if you rescale them the program automatically updates the images to adjust to their new size. There is also a way to paste a vector path directly into the program. Although AE is not a true animation program, it does give you a lot of control. After a month I can see I still have a lot to learn, as the many special effects options in AE can be used to good use in animated projects. I feel as if I have more control over what I am producing, and correcting mistakes seems easier in AE than Anime Studio Pro. I do miss the auto-phyiscs, as well as some of the other features, so in the end it's all about personal taste and what you're comfortable with, and more importantly, your style of animation.
    As a final note: I might have been more enthusiastic about Toon Boom if my budget wasn't limited. Toon Boon comes in three flavors ($249, $699, $1,199), where as I already owned AE (CS 5.5)  - so your budget, of course, is another factor in choosing. Anime Studio has two flavors; $50 and $300.

  • Adobe CS3: Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Flash (Not opening)

    Hi,
    I have had the adobe creative suite suite 3 Deisgn premium for over an year now.  Recently over the past 2 months I am no longer able to open up any of the following programs:
    Photoshop
    Dreamweaver
    Illustrator
    Flash
    They have worked for me in the past but now they are just not opening up for me.  I have tried plenty of things such as:
    Uninstalling the whole cd then reinstalling
    Calling customer service
    Browsing/googling for ways to fix it
    Yet I still have been yet to get this issue resolved.  I have tried installing the CS4 30 day trial and that works fine.  But I want my CS3 version to work.  I tried everything.  The thing is I do not get an error message either on the these so there is no way of titling this issue.  If it helps I have windows vista.  Well please let me know what you come up with .  My email is [email protected]  Thank you!
    Brett Ryan

    What does happen?     When I double click on them nothing happens for a second it gives me the loading signal but nothing comes up.
    You say no error message - how far in the boot process does the program get?  Does it just not respond at all?  Does the program load-box appear and freeze?  Does the program load-box appear and dissapear?  Does the computer freeze up in the middle of the load?
               You never end up seeing anything for any of the applications except for photoshop which loads but then closes right away.  So it just doesnt respond at all.  But there is no freezing.  So the load-box only appears and dissapears when I open photoshop. but for everything else it just never appears.
    Does the process display in your processes list?
                No it does not display
    Did you install/uninstall/delete anything around the time this started?
    I'm pretty sure I didnt uninstall or install anything around the  time it started.  I think I would remember if it did.  So i'm pretty sure I did not.
    Did you try going back to a restore point before this started?  No I did not.
    Have you run a thorough virus scan?  Yes I have and nothing comes up.

  • Why can't I copy and paste from Illustrator to Flash?

    I have this silly but frustrating problem. I've drawn a
    series of objects in Illustrator and have copied and pasted many of
    them into separate frames in Flash and all of a sudden they won't
    paste. There are 3 objects I'm trying to paste onto each frame and
    2 of them will paste, but 1 won't. I don't have anything locked and
    I have no clipping masks in Illustrator. They will copy and paste
    in Illustrator. I've tried copy and pasting them separately, I've
    tried opening a new Flash document and pasting, I've tried
    restarting my computer. Does this sound like just another freak
    thing or does anyone have any ideas? Is there some keyboard
    shortcut I might have bumped in Flash to change some hidden
    setting...? But then why is it just 1 of the 3 objects that won't
    paste?
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    I think I tried all the options and none worked. Even so, the clipboard options say "Clipboard on Quit". That sounds like it has nothing to do with between active programs.
    I'm able to paste from CS5 TO CC though.

  • How to make colors look same in illustrator and Flash Builder

    We had a designer build out our UI using Adobe illustrator, and then tried to replicate the same hex color and alpha codes in Flash Builder- colors are looking very different on the same machine
    We have used basic web colors but the problem persists. Any pointers on why this could happen?

    Thanks Joan... we managed to figure out the cause to a large extent- problem
    arisen by the way the layers were built in Illustrator vs Flashbuilder. I
    still have the following questions, that we are currently handling via a
    workaround
    a) when I try to skin the container using SkinnableContainer, the skin
    doesn't take effect- but works, when I use same skin with a BorderContainer.
    Any idea of why this is so?
    The code used is as below
    <s:BorderContainer id="Banner" height="15%" width="100%"
    skinClass="mySkins.newskin1">
    <mx:Image id ="logo" source="assets/graphics/logo.png"
    x="{0.018Banner.width}" y ="{.09Banner.height}"
    height="{Banner.height*0.7}" maintainAspectRatio="true"
    width="{Banner.width*0.085}"/>
    <s:Label x="{0.065Banner.width }" y ="{.293Banner.height}"
    fontFamily="Copperplate" fontSize="34" kerning="on" color="#666666"
    text="EUREKA WORLD"/>
    <s:Label x="{.88Banner.width}" y ="{.293Banner.height}" fontFamily="Arial"
    fontSize="14" kerning="on" color="#666666" text="Help | Log Out"/>
    <s:Label x="{.865Banner.width}" y ="{.45Banner.height}" fontFamily="Arial
    Bold" fontSize="18" kerning="on" color="#666666" text="Welcome Gauri"/>
    </s:BorderContainer>
    Skin attached
    b) we are trying to replicate the design from Illustrator(exported in fxg
    format) and replicate in FlashBuilder. We would like to name the objects
    meaningfully so we can connect the front-end with names in the fxg code.
    Currently we see an objID. How do we name objects in Illustrator?
    c) When we use a mx:vbox within a repeater to display contents of an array,
    we had trouble skinning this for background color- compromise we reached was
    to have the background color in the mx:vbox with a skinclass for the border
    and shadow

  • Flash Video Conversion

    I am new to the web video flash stuff. What is the best way to export a 1-2 minute (Audio/Video) clip from Final Cut. I all ready have Snoch that will convert to a FLV.
    I have been exporting as an AVI but the image quality falls apart as a flash video. Is there another format to export from Final Cut?

    Export from fcp as a quicktime with sequence settings (the first quicktime export option not quicktime conversion). This will create an exact digital copy of your timeline. Then take it into your conversion software. Don't know this particular method of converting to flash, but compression is an art and getting maximum quality with minimum file size and minimum render time is complicated.
    Things to consider: Reduce the pixel dimension of your video. 320x240 is a good compromise. Reduce the frame rate. an even division of your original frame rate is probably best. If your piece is standard american video (ntsc) 29.97 frames per second. Half that is 15 frames per second (don't ask).

  • Does Illustrator have a Gradient Feather tool like InDesign?

    CS4...I know it has to be here somewhere, I know the gradient tool in In InDesign but cant find one in Illustrator.  I see the normal feather but it seems to just feather the edges.  I need it to start full on one end and fade out to the other end

    Illustrator can feather transparency just as well as InDesign. Better, in fact. But the interface for doing so is convoluted and has long been one of the most asked questions on the forum. Look up Opacity Mask in the help files. Basically, you first create a gradient, gradient mesh, or a number of objects with different grayscale fills, which are then grouped. This object or group is placed above the object, image, or group to be masked and you Make Opacity Mask in the Transparency panel.

  • Why does Illustrator CS6 create gradients through clip groups?

    Hi,
    This may be a stupid question, but I jumped to CS6 from CS3 and am a bit confused. I create graphics for stock imagery and it is important to minize the amount of shapes. I created my first image with CS6 that has several gradients and my file is enormous because when I viewed it with "Overprint view" it showed that all gradients consisted of several paths contained in a clip group. How do I avoid this? Any help would be appreciated!

    I just made a very primitive inerpretation of clip art which is the kind of stuff sold for stock.
    There are no clipping paths even though there are many paths with gradient fills. Can you explain how you create the art and or prepare a video so we can watch you create one shape with which you use the gradient that produces this clipping group?

  • Flash CS6 versus Flash CC conversion to HTML5

    I use Flash CS6 and conversion to HTML5 with CreateJS is a problem for someone with my limited expertise. I am looking into Flash CC and the Adobe description states that when you create a new Flash file, one option is "HTML5 Canvas", which doesn't exist in Flash CS6. If one selects this option, is the conversion to HTML5 simplified as comparison to trying to go to HTML5 from Flash CS6?

    In the converted .html that Swiffy gives you, you'll have 2 lines of <script> in your <head> tag.
    Runtime.js and another long stance of script. Copy both and paste it into the <head> section of the HTML page where you want Swiffy converted animation to appear.
    In the <body> tag of Swiffy converted html file, you'll have a placeholder DIV (default ID will be swiffycontainer). Copy & paste this DIV placeholder in the target HTML file as well. The DIV style (height & width) will vary depending on your actual SWF stage size.
    Then, you'll have a script that calls the HTML5 animation within that placeholder DIV - something like this:
    <script>
          var stage = new swiffy.Stage(document.getElementById('swiffycontainer'),
                                       swiffyobject);
          stage.start();
    </script>
    Put this just before closing </body> tag in your target HTML file. This will initialize and load the HTML5 animation inside the placeholder DIV with ID = swiffycontainer.
    Trust this helps.
