IMac (2007, Intel Duo-Core, 2Ghz, 4GB Ram) crashing unexpectedly

Need some help.  I know my iMac is getting on in years, but this is becoming a problem.  We have been saving up for a new computer, but in the mean time I'd like make this one last.  I have combed the forums and I'm not reading any solutions that seem to help this problem.  I am having unexpected crashes occur seemingly during loaded work, although normal.  For example, I was running iTunes, Adobe Lightroom, Mail, and Safari.  Normal temperatures, so its not overheating.  This has been an off and on issue for several months now.  I have run AHT, and checked the disks for repairs.  I do have third party memory, but I have re-installed them to check they are properly seated.
Here is the readout from Console:

Would like any insight you can offer...

Thank you den.thed!
I have a kingston 2GB module sitting in my cart at Newegg... It is the "regular" one not the ValueRAM version. I had come across a thread somewhere on these forums that also warned against "Value RAM" modules, but I did not know about multi-speed issues...Good to know!
Thanks again!!
Vic
Edited to add- I went back to zoom in on the product image at Newegg to make sure it was the right one and once it's blown up, you can clearly see " Apple Macbook Pro and iMac Intel series".
First time I've seen it on the package, it is usually either one or the other.
Well, Thanks again!

  • How do I upgrade OS X 10.5.8 on my iMac with Intel duo core processor

I have an iMac 24" with 2,16 Ghz Intel Core Duo processor and 2Gb 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM running on OS X 10.5.8 to Lion?
I know I have to upgrade first to snowleopard???
If so SnowLeopard is not available in the iCentres etc.
    What to do??
    Brgds,
    Nils

Your iMac is a Core 2 Duo not a Core Duo according to this http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac-core-2-duo-2.16-24-inch-sp ecs.html
Which is good since the specifications for OSX Lion require a Core 2 Duo as minimum processor:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
The road to OSX Lion requires you to have OSX Snow Leopard before which can be bought from Apples Online Store http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA but is not avaiable as a download.
After installation of OSX Snow Leopard and installation of neccessary updates to it you can then use the Mac App Store to buy OSX Lion and install it.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/
For OSX Lion an upgrade of your RAM to 4GB might be advisable.

  • Power Consumption for iMac 20" INTEL DUO CORE

I need to know which is the power consumption for the 20" 2.16 GHz INTEL CORE DUO. I want to buy a UPS for this machine and I could not figure out in any place within the manual where to get that information. It is something that have to be very easy to find but it was not the case for me in this opportunity.
I cannot believe that I have to create a post in order to get this answer!
Kind regards to all and thanks for any clue that any one can give me.

    Welcome to the discussions!
Another vote for APC. I use the XS900 for my first gen G5 iMac and it works very nicely without their PowerChute software. It even comes with the correct USB cable to hook it into your Mac.

  • My mac book pro (2.66Ghz Intel core i7 4Gb ram) crashes every time I open iPhoto, browse photos or videos from Finder and work with slides, this started after I upgraded to mountain lion, what can I do??

I updated my OS to mountain lion and since then my mac book pro is virtually useless, seeng pictures, videos, using graphics applications and Iphoto is impossible, the screen goes black, and the system restarts.
This even happens sometimes at login, the login screen appears then the computer crashes and restarts, sometimes more than once, yesterday it even happened 6 times in a row before I was actually able to enter the password and log in.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Dvcpro hd and Macbook pro intel duo core

Hello friends, I have MBP 15" duo core 2ghz ,2gb ram, can i edit dvcpro hd material in fcp studio. i mean will my MBP be able to take the load i plan to use express card, e-sata drives, or do i have to transcode it to dv format. it will be only 1 layer track.

If you use a e-sata express card with a external e-sata HD, then you will have enough performance. A e-sata drive will be just as fast as your internal drive.
Maybe if you have a nice 3.5 inch e-sata HD you will have better performace then the internal 2.5 inch laptop HD.

  • Need advice Imac G5 Intel Duo 2 Core 2ghz will not power up DEAD

Hi all. Hoping for some friendly advice. I have an Imac G" Intel Duo 2 Core about a year old or so. My adult son was using it. Never a single issue and a very mild user. He reformatted it the other night and turned it over to me because he got a new one. I'm thrilled since I'm still using my G4 733 I've been faithfully keeping in operation since April 2001 with almost no issues. The only thing I have done is allow it to auto update everything the night before last. It's set to sleep the screen after an hour and the whole thing about 2 hours. Been working fine and just touch the keyboard and back to life.
Well this afternoon went back to take some more tutorials and it's just dead. As if it had gone to sleep but no amount of button pressing helped. Unplugged everything on USB, firewire. Using apple bluetooth KB and mouse that came with it. Both had new batteries as of other night. Left power cable loose for 10-15 minutes and no help. Held the single power button for long periods, tried holding it while plugging in to wall, tried other wall outlets. Wiggled chord to see if flakey... read articles on resetting some macs but nothing helped so far.
    Thanks
    LB

Well update I did finally get it to come on after a couple hours of coming back and fiddling. In efforts to fix it I looked up the number on the stand and it looks to be made mid 2007 which means likely no warranty.
I popped out the memory under the little bottom edge cover and dusted off some of the woolies. Didn't help but I blew into the round fan vent on the rear and a good bit of dust even came out the top edge vent. Looks like my son gathered some dust in this thing.
Still thought it would not come on but pressed again and suddenly it's ON and working but the cooling fan seems to be stuck on fast mode. I can't see any way this thing is having heat problems in my office which is a little warm but not hot.
So likely will take into service to clean and dust it out etc and maybe this fan will begin running right. This iMac has never given one ounce of trouble either. I'm posting this using the iMac
    Any additional advice appreciated,

  • Final Cut Studio 2 on an Intel Duo Core 2 iMac?

Can FCS 2 efficiently run on an Intel Duo Core 2 iMac? Should I invest in a Mac Pro? Thanks for any advice.

On the contrary. I've been using a 20" iMac since June of 2007 and it has performed very well on a number of projects, including an hour-long documentary, a 1 1/2 hour concert, and multiple smaller projects.
That isn't to say that a Mac Pro isn't better. Often times it's the budget that makes people lean towards an iMac. Keep in mind, 540, that an iMac isn't expandable, and that's the thing to consider. You can't add more ram and you can't install a capture card for working with HD footage.
If none of that matters to you, then the iMac will do just fine.
    jesse.

  • Sharing hard drive with windows xp on imac intel duo core

    Hi,
I was wondering whether I could give over anymore of the hard disk on my imac intel duo core to Windows xp? If so, how would I go about doing that?
    Thanks in advance

At this point I think that you would need to use Boot Camp to remove the current partition and then make a bigger one and reinstall Windows.
Just an idea for you. There is an entire Apple Discussion forum dedicated to Boot Camp and Windows.
The Forum is at the bottom of the main Apple Discussions page under Windows Compatible Technology.

  • Need RAM Installation Instructions for mac mini intel duo core

I just purchased two gig of ram for my intel duo core mac mini and cannot figure out how to install. I was able to get the cover off - but where does the RAM go?
I can't find any instructions on the apple support page for the mac mini.
All of the links in discussion board that I found are for instructions on installing ram on single processor mac mini which uses different type of ram and is installed in diff location.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

I found a video here at owc: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/mini/intel/high.html

  • Using Adobe CS2  with mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 .17"

As a designer working on high definition heavy graphic files intended for digital printing, i am about to go for mc book pro 2,16 duo core and 2gb ram.
I need to use CS2 (photoshop, illustrator) and know that it is not a native soft version, so not otimized for this processor. Any how, I just cannot wait CS3 (Adobe says 2007 whenever they are ready !), so I need advise of professional users of such applications on this mc book pro intel duo core 2,16 17".
I heard pretty scary rumours about such a professional use.
PLEASE HELP BEFORE I GO FOR PC/WIN !!!

CS runs beautifully, with really no lag at all. Keep in mind that I haven't gotten to upgrading from 1 GB RAM to 2 yet, since my tablet died and I needed to replace that. I just installed CS2 last week, and there is a lag, and we'll soon see if more memory helps. Everything works fine, no crashes, etc., but there is in my opinion a noticeable difference in loading time, and various other tasks within the apps take longer. Again, CS2 works just fine, but the performance of CS is much better.

  • Intel duo Core and CS2 - does it work?

    Hi guys,
I'm doing really well. I ordered a 17" imac 1.82Ghz Intel Duo Core and I have not as yet received it.
I have alos ordered Aperture (which will work but possibly quite slow) although I have upgraded to 2Gb Ram.
I have also ordered Photoshop CS2 (full version) and I'm confused. Can I install it? Will it work?
If Aperture is slow and Photoshop CS2 doesn't work what can a amateur photographer use. I'm cheesed off because I ordered an expensive machine and software and before I have even received it I'm seeing that it might not be suitable at all.
Can someone give me some "peace of mind" please.
    17" IMAC (1.83Ghz) Intel duo Core / 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Although you can use CS2 with an Intel Mac you should be aware of a significant problem which relates to its installation on them since the last Security update. According to Frank, one of the more senior members of the boards , with a good knowledge of this area:
The CS2 installer will fail if you have applied SU 2006-003 prior to the installation of CS2 on an Intel-based Mac. You will be required to reinstall Tiger, otherwise you will be only able to reboot the machine via a Netboot, CD boot or Safeboot. The Finder is completely locked. It is unknown at this time which extension is causing the issue. Adobe has acknowledged the problem.
One workaround that I am aware of has been suggested on MacFixit:
    MacFixIt reader David Warren writes:
"I had the startup freeze like others. For my MacBook Pro the answer was removing the Adobe VersionCueCS2 from /Library/StartupItems.""(from MacFixit - http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=2006051507495116 )
To do this, though, you would need to be happy starting up in the non-standard ways suggested by Frank. I wouldn't normally suggest this for a new Mac user. If you plan on going down this path post back and we can tell you how to.
I guess the real answer is that you will need to know whether the security update has already been installed on your new computer. If it has, then you should wait until Adobe have a fix for the problem before you install Photoshop.
If it hasn't, install Photoshop BEFORE you upgrade with the Security Update, and don't re-install it thereafter until the Adobe fix arrives. You should also remove the relevant startup file, just to be on the safe side.
So whoever warned you about installing it was doing you a favour, and a "simple google search", might have got you into quite a lot of strife!
    Cheers
    Rod

  • How much sdram can the iMac 2007 20" dual core 2.4gHz take?

How much sdram can the iMac 2007 20" dual core 2.4gHz take?

    Not SDRAM but SO-DIMM.
The max RAM is offically, 4 GB (two 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM) module but, with larger modules released after that model's specs were written, you can achieve 6GB with one 2GB plus one 4GB module.
You must get the 4GB from a Mac Savvy vendor or it won't work. OWC has the larger modules that are well-tested in Macs:

  • Hotmail/intel duo core

Has anyone successfully downloaded the plugin for hotmail in mail on the new intel duo core and managed to get it to work?
v grateful for any advice on how to do this. i have installed the plugin but it doesn't seem to be recognised in the options for account set up.
    thanks
iMAC intel duo core 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I don't believe the httpmail plugin is Universal yet which means it runs/works for the Mail.app on a PowerPC Mac at the present time only.
An Intel Mac includes Rosetta which is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh computer—it allows applications to run as nonnative binaries.
For the Intel based Mail.app (which should be Universal), try selecting run as a PowerPC binary (which requires Rosetta) using Get Info for the Mail.app application via the Finder.
This should allow the httpmail plugin to work.
