IMac 21.5 inch- Better with a 1TB fusion drive or 16GB of ram?

Hello all.
I have decided to get an iMac. But, I need help on deciding what is a better upgrade. I am planning on dual booting windows and playing the video game: Battlefield 4. While this won't be for a while (I'd need to buy windows, then anti-virus blah blah blah....), I would like to know what is the better upgrade in the long run.
Thanks for the help.
M.

Because ram in the 21.5 in model isn't user upgradable getting the maximum amount you can afford would be my choice.

  • New Imac27 with 1TB Fusion Drive?

    I just purchased a new iMac27 with a 1TB Fusion Drive installed.
How as an average user do I know what resides on the SSD portion of the drive?
I understand that the Mac OSX 10.8.2 is supposed to reside there from the factory, but what else is on the SSD and
what gets installed there or put there as I use my system?
I do a lot of photo editing, can I move PhotoShop or LR4 to my SSD portion for faster use/access?
Any help or feedback would be appreciafed.

As an average user you basically ignore the fact that you have a fusion drive.
You can't directly influence what is stored where, that is you can't tell the OS to put something there, how you use  your computer will decide what goes where. And there is no way to know what is stored where.
So just sit back and enjoy the increased performance and let the OS do the driving

  • IMac (21.5, late 2012) 2.9GHz, i5 - Fusion Drive?

    Hello everyone, I have iMac 21.5, i5 2.9GHz late 2012.
Going to the Apple Store, can be mount a fusion drive? how much cost?
    thanks to all

    Hi,
    let me share my experience:
I had a similar problem with my new 27'' late 2012 iMac with 1 TB fusion drive and 16GB RAM. There was a consistent noise as if the HD was permanently working. All functions and HD checks were normal. The HD started even buzzing when scrolling a website - sounded like a trapped fly.
I brought it back and they exchanged the HD: Better, but still not to the standard expected from this high-end machine. I brought it back a second time, thinking I was overly sensitive, asked them to check again and was even willing to upgrade to a SSD if the technician would call this "normal".
They exchanged the HD for the 2nd time, and also the LCD display and:
it is gone - completely gone !
And it appears overall performance of the machine is faster than before.
Hope it helps, if someone has similar doubts as I had.
    Cheers
    JK

  • Imac 27 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7,with 1TB Fusion Drive and logic

hi all, i just upgraded my old imac and now im going to have the 27 inch 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7,with 1TB Fusion Drive
how will logic is going to work? is it much better than my old i3 21.5 imac? i didnt like to work with my old imac, was very laggy.
    thanks
    Arad.

Anything purchased after mid-July has EFI (like BIOS in PCs) that only likes Lion.   Maybe some up through mid-August could possibly run SL, but anyhing sold last week is Lion-only.
A very lucky few accidentally receive a SL-system when they buy new, but very few.

  • Best way to install Windows 8 on an iMac with 1tb Fusion drive

I just ordered my first iMac. Not my first mac, I have owned numerous Mac laptops in the past but am finally ready to make the switch for my main desktop .
Now I need to installed windows 8.1 because I need to run visual studio. That is literally the only app I need to run.
    Ordered with the below specs:
    27" imac
    i7 processor
    1tb fusion drive
    16gb ram.
I am thinking of two options:
    1) use parallels or vmware fusion and create a 200gb windows virtual machine and give this machine 6gb ram (4gb is recommend by more couldn't hurt). since the fusion drive works at a block level, my windows OS and vs should parts of the VM file should get moved to the SSD as I will be using it a lot. my main goal is max performance. i will be working on metro apps (not windows phone apps). any recommendation on which is better? parallels or vmware? stability and performance is key. i don't need any fancy UI integration and i won't run any games. happy to run windows in fullscreen mode.
    2) create a 200gb partition and run bootcamp. cleary more stable but will it be faster than above because i am assuming the ssd caching will not working here?
per mircorosft website they give instructions for both options above, but i am looking for realworld experience in what will get be most stability in terms of network IO (working on UPNP apps so need stable network bridging) and then performance is key.
HDD size is not a big deal for me as most of my media lives in my synology NAS.

virtual machine will be more stable
bootcamp will be faster but the only place you will notice is if you play new 3d games on diwndows

  • I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India. Once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan?

I am planning to buy an iMac 21.5 inch with Fusion drive and 16 GB RAM while i visit USA for a conference. My country of origin is India and the option of configuring to my need is not avaialble here in India. My concern is once i am back to India, will my iMac be covered by the Apple's Protection Plan if something goes wrong here in India?
I recently came across some posts regarding International warranty related issues for iPhone and iPad....hence this crossed my mind...
Waiting for response from the support group members...

    Thanks Ralph
This essentially means that if my iMac develops some problem (both software and hardware) in my country (India), it will be completeley attended (even the whole system requires replacement) by the AASP in India...is that what you say?

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support, formerly Apple Express Lane and let them deal with it.

  • IMac Retina 5k Display with 6 TB Fusion Drive

For no good reason Apple offers no BTO option for build-in state of the art 6 TB hard drives as Fusion Drives in the Apple Online Store. Those drives work as Fusion Drive without any problem in customized iMacs already. I have seen it! So why leave out this option? Is there any way to get a BTO Retina iMac with 6 TB Fusion Drive? Maybe a premium reseller?

Were you able to resolve this?  I have the same issue and the marks look almost exactly the same...
Called Apple Care and they told me to take it in to an Apple Store, which I'll do after I backup everything.

  • Which configuration of iMac 27" ?  Fusion drive or not ? RAM upgrade ?

I'd love to get a new 27" iMac for my Mother, but cannot decide if the higher i7 processor (3.5) is worth the price, and cannot decide if the 3TB "Fusion" drive is worth the extra $350.
The retail Apple stores stock the i7 only with the 3TB Fusion drive, the better graphics card, and stock 8GB of RAM, but one can configure the machine if ordering on-line via the link below.   Her husband will reimburse me or it will be a gift.  Money is not the issue.... just whether or not the money is worth spending.
One last thing:  The apple store rep said that the "Geniuses" have to do the RAM upgrade, say from 8GB to 32GB because the 21" unit has to be opened.  So the consumer doing the RAM upgrade will void the warranty. Yet I see website indicating that the 21" has a nice convenient door to open and the RAM is user-upgradable without voiding the warranty.  Which is true ?
Apple wants to charge $600 (parts and labor) for the RAM upgrade to 32GB.   But Crucial has 32MB of this RAM for under $300 with a lifetime warranty.  Is there a reason to use the RAM from Apple ?

    1. 27" iMac with 3.4Ghz i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 775M with 2GB video memory is just $200 more than 27" iMac with 3.2Ghz i5 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M with 1GB video memory. How much is her time worth per hour? If it's for business use, it pays for itself quickly. Same opinion for the 'build-to-order' upgrades in speed and video available on the 27" i7.
    2. Fusion drive is a hybrid combining 128GB SSD with either a 1TB or 3TB rotating platter hard drive.
Analysis and review of Fusion drive in a 2012 iMac: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6679/a-month-with-apples-fusion-drive
Conclusions and performance are on pages 5 and 6 of the review.
    3. 27" iMac RAM is "user-replacable", quoting from the 2013 'Important Product Information' addendum to the manual:
    "Do Not Make Repairs Yourself
Your iMac doesn’t have any user-serviceable parts, except for memory, which is user-replaceable in 27-inch models only. Do not attempt to open your iMac. If your iMac needs service, contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple for service.
If you open your iMac or install items other than memory in 27-inch models, you risk damaging your equipment. Such damage isn’t covered by the limited warranty on your iMac."
    quoted from http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1662/en_US/imac_late2013_ipig.pdf
OWC video of the 27" RAM upgrade installation: http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/imac_27inch_late_2012_mem_m/
    4. If it's for business, go for the i7 and the video upgrade.
    5. I'd do the upgrade myself, purchasing from a reliable vendor of Apple RAM such as crucial.com or macsales.com. I have no experience with the other vendor you mentioned, RAMfinder.com. Factory-installed RAM offers the pricey convenience of having a machine configured by you online and shipped directly to your mother in a few days with no one else needing to be involved.  I'd avoid any Apple salesperson who apparently doesn't know the 27" iMac product well enough to give you the truth about user-installable RAM upgrades. OWC (macsales.com) will purchase system-pull original RAM allowing you to recoup a small portion of the cost of the upgrade, though nothing close to the resale price of the RAM.

  • "No Bootable Device" after failed Boot Camp installation (Windows 8 - 1TB Fusion Drive)

On my new iMac /w a 1TB Fusion Drive, I tried to install Windows 8 (still technically unsupported) using the following method:
    http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/11/no-support-no-problem-inst alling-windows-8-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/
Everything was proceeding just fine; I had Boot Camp copy all of the Windows 8 files (a legitimate, store-bought copy) to a bootable USB drive - a feature only available on new Macs running Boot Camp Assistant that don't come with an internal optical drive - and create a 102 Gb partition on the Fusion Drive. It then rebooted and was proceeding through the Windows 8 setup wizard as should be expected, but it couldn't modify any of the partitions on the Fusion Drive and wouldn't proceed. I accepted defeat and decided I would just wait until Windows 8 is officially supported before trying again.
Now, every time I turn the computer on, I get an error message saying "No Bootable Device...", unless I hold down the Option key and manually select "Macintosh HD" (the only boot device listed). I already removed the primary Windows 8 partition, but it hasn't fixed the issue.
I'm thinking that it's one of the 'hidden' partitions causing it to behave like this, or something wrong with the EFI bootloader, but I don't know how to proceed. Any thoughts on this?

I actually did try this (forgot to mention it), and it didn't fix the problem.
However, I just resolved it on my own, doing what I probably should have tried before anything else: running "Repair Disk" in Disk Utility updated all of the boot preferences as it should have.

  • How much traditional drive in a 1TB Fusion drive?

In a 1TB Fusion drive, there is supposed to be 128GB Flash drive. Does this mean there really is 872 GB of traditional drive? I want to purchase a new iMac, and didn't know if getting a Fusion drive would short me on the amount of storage in the traditional drive.

    Michael Black wrote:
Technically, yes it is an 870GB conventional hard drive with 128GB of non-volatile RAM added to the drive case.  But as mende1 says, it all functions as a single 1TB volume.  Your unformatted drive space on that drive is 1TB.
Actually it's a 1TB conventional drive with a 128GB SSD for a total formatted capacity of 1.11 TB.

  • Unable to install Windows on an 2010 iMac with home-made Fusion Drive

    Hi there,
I've been very happy using mi iMac eversince I installed the SSD alongside the HDD.  Only recently I tried to install Windows 7 but it doesn't seem to work.  The installer runs, it seems as though Windows is installing but it doesn't ever seem to be able to boot.  I've tried countless times.  Everytime it boots to Windows it shows nothing but just a black screen with the cursor blinking at the top left corner.
Now, when I home-made the Fusion Drive the Mac OS was only 10.8.2 or older and I know that with 10.8.3 Apple has made improvements towards boot camp and especially the 3TB HDDs.  I wonder if this could have anything to do.
Anyway, please enlighten me as to what is it that I need to do to make it work.  I've been reading something about the position in which the Windows partition resides compared to GUID and EFI but honestly I have just the tiniest idea about all that.  Just for the record, the following is what shows in the Terminal after diskutil list command:
    diskutil list
    /dev/disk0
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *256.1 GB   disk0

    Hope you can help..!

Hello again, by reading a couple of posts I learnt the steps and so, using an external OS I repartitioned the two internal drives making sure the Windows partition wasn't part of the Fusion Drive.  I was very excited as I was sure it would work and went ahead and started the Win7 installation even before the MacOS was restored into the iMac.
No good news though.  The installer run as expected however, when the time came for the iMac to boot from the newly installed Windows7, all I saw was a blank screen and a blinking dash at the top left corner of the screen.
Lastly, this morning I woke up to see that my old system was fully restored from Time Machine external back up.  I also leart that using the Boot Camp Assistant I could remove the Windows partition that I created on Terminal from the external OS, which was surprising, I honestly thought that that partitioning arrangement would be off-limits for the Boot Camp Assistant.
Still, I haven't been succesfull installing Windows back to my Mac, can anybody help?

  • How to restore partition layout of my 1TB Fusion Drive?

    Hi there,
I purchased a Late 2013 iMac 27" with a 1 TB Fusion Drive. I tried to install Windows 8.1 without Bootcamp. My Installation with Bootcamp didn't work - there was an error stating that Windows Installation was not able to prepare for the next step of the installation - so I partitioned manually via OS X Disk Utility (resizing the Macintosh HD) and tried to install to the unused disk space - okay my mistake. This somehow didn't work either. Now I have the following situation: The Disk Utility shows the following partition layout:
    Macintosh HD 779,53 GB
    Unused disk space 220,33 GB
I am not able to resize the Macintosh HD to use the unused disk space (original partition layout). There is no option for this. The partition layout option is greyed out. When I try to create a second partition of the unused space and proceed, nothing happens (protocol states preparing to partition: „APPLE HDD ST1000DM003 Media“ - nothing more). The operation will not finish. Next to the partition scheme is the following information (translated from german): "For a new partition layout the whole capacity of the Fusion Drive won't be available." The whole Macintosh HD now has a capacity of 900,52GB (Disk Utility).
What can I do to restore to the original partition layout of my Fusion Drive which had a capacity of about 1,1TB?
    Thank you for your help!
    Chris

Yes, I think my first attempt was also in EFI mode, this could have resulted in the second EFI part.

  • Will Bootcamp work with the 3T fusion drive with the Mountain Lion update?

The notes on the update say it will work with the 3T drive but in typical minimalist fashion, Apple doesn't mention whether that includes the 3T fusion drive.  Why can't they just explain things fully?
anyway, does anyone have an answer?

I installed 10.8.2 update today with my 2012 MBA.  The details of the update include:  Resolves a video issue with some VGA projectors when connected to certain Mac notebooks.
I tried using the MBA with a video projector and it found the correct resolution and connected with the projector automatically.  Using detect displays in the disoplay preference pane wasn't even necessary.
I hope this is the fix I have been waiting for with the 2012 MBA.
    Thank you Apple.
