IMac 24" Display - Black Cleaning Cloth

I mainly use the +black cleaning cloth+ that came with my iMac to keep the +tracker ball+ on the +'mighty mouse'+ functioning by spraying the black cleaning cloth with a cleaning solution and rubbing the tracker ball furiously against it. I'm sure you know what I am referring to.
This has been working fine up to now but I am now noticing a gradual diminution of the effectiveness of this method. I think this may be because the black cleaning cloth itself is getting clogged up with gunge and thus itself needs cleaning.
Has anyone else tried to clean the black cloth that came with their iMac?
I mean, to clean the black cloth, is it merely a matter of shoving the it into the washing machine on, say, 30 degrees with a simple 'non-bio' soap powder - or does it need something more drastic like Dry Cleaning or something?
El D

HI,
You weren't supposed to spray anything on the black cleaning cloth and it's meant for the display only.
That's why it's lost its effectiveness. Running the black cloth through your washing machine will ruin it completely. The cloth is anti-static. Washing it period will ruin it.
*"rubbing the tracker ball furiously against it."*
That will only lend the black cloth useless.

  • MacBook Pro's Black Cleaning Cloth Dye Bleeding!

Been gently washing my black cleaning cloth which came with my 2011 MBP with lukewarm water and gentle dish soap for over a year now and it is still bleeding the black dye.  I am a little concerned.  For the premium price people pay for these notebooks, Apple could save money with an undyed cleaning cloth couldn't they?  Has anyone noticed and also been concerned about this?  I mean it isn't like it's vegetable dye right?  What do you think?  Thanks.

I'm washing it gently by hand in lukewarm water in the sink with gentle dish soap, the dye is running but the cloth shows no signs of fading even after a year and some.  I don't know what dye they use for their black microfibre cloths which comes with 2011 MacBook Pros but gentle washing is getting out a lot of black dye, it just bleeds out and streams out.  I'm going to just use cold water from now on because I don't know if the dye is toxic enough.  Rather not continue risking.    I've always used iKlear by the way.

  • IMac (Mid 2007) - Black / Purple dots on display

    Hello,
I am having a problem with my Intel iMac display. I don't want to write a long story, so I'll try to keep it short:
    1) October 2008 - My iMac Super Drive started making a funny noise when playing DVD movies (It was a Pioneer one), I took it in for repair at my local Apple Store, it was replaced with a Matshita one. I get my iMac back with black dots on the screen.
    2) November 2008 - I took my computer back in to get the display cleaned up, after a few weeks , I get it back with the same dots only in different places.
    3) January 2009 - I took my computer back in and got it back with 3-4 dots that won't go away, Apple Store guys can't do more. I decided to remove the screen cover and tried cleaning it myself. No luck, the 3-4 dots I can see (there are more perhaps) won't go away and I now believe they're dead or stuck pixels.
I tried stuck pixel killing tools online for hours, no luck. If I try to take a screenshot, you can't see anything. I even thought "wth?" and re-installed the OS and all apps and stuff, thinking it could be a software issue = Nothing.
    4) February 2009 - I wrote a formal complaint to Apple based on all my knowledge about customer satisfaction issues (I work @ HP), even a Project Manager helped me out. I sent 3 letters, 1 to each address I could find that supposedly has a Customer Relations Dept.
It's been a little over a week, I'm obviously not expecting an answer yet, but being realistic, I doubt they're ever gonna respond or do something, think about it, it's 4 dead pixels.
The point I tried to make in my letters was that this was not caused by me and that the display was perfectly fine before I took my iMac in for repair the first time and that my local Apple Store has failed to fix the issue.
That is what I'm holding on to, that they'll realize they messed it up and it was not my fault and this was not caused by regular use either.
So, I got the letter in case anyone would mind reading it. But the purpose of my post is to ask you what I can expect as a customer or if you actually believe it's gonna be easier to win the lottery than having them do something about this. Maybe somebody out there had a similar experience like this and has something to say.
Maybe this seems ridiculous, but just think, you bought a brand new car and it has a scratch, it may be big or tiny, but there's a scratch, wouldn't you be mad?
My comp just turned 1 year old in January and it's covered under an AppleCare extended service plan til 2011.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, Lyssa.
I've pushed in the RAM modules so hard that my fingers hurt. I'm pretty sure they're installed fully, since replacing the original RAM works no problem and I'm not pushing any harder to put those in. I suppose I could try one more time to double check.
I have a couple 2GB modules in my ASUS, so I'll try taking one of those out and see if that works. I thought that each slot was limited to 1GB so I never thought to try that.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Why does the display on my 27" iMac keep going black?

This seems to be happening very often now. It started with just every once in a while.
I will be using my iMac and the display goes black. It does NOT go to sleep. Just the display goes black. I do video and audio editing on my iMac and if I am listening to playback or a song while the screen goes black, I can still hear it. So, I know it has not gone to sleep.
A way that I have gotten around this is by, once the display goes black I will then push the power button to make the iMac go to sleep. Then, I will push it again to wake it up. This usually works and the iMac will work just fine afterwards. Now what is happening, the iMac will go black again after a few seconds of being turned back on from sleep.
I tried to run a diagnostic with an Apple person over the phone and for some reason my iMac will not respond to this.
AND... It has gotten worse. I can't even boot up my iMac from a power down without the display going black.
    Any help?

  • Does 2012 imac come with cleaning cloth

does apple imac 2012 model come with a cleaning cloth

As far as I know, that was discontinued a few years ago. Get one for cleaning eyeglasses from your local optometrist/eyeglass store. They usually come with the cases. You probably have one already; be certain to wash it first in mild detergent and then let it dry out. Make sure it's a nice soft one. I think they're all microfiber now.

  • 24" 2008 iMac screen going black

My 24" 2008 iMac screen keeps going black then coming back after a while. What temperature would it need to get to in order to knock out the display? I have iStat.
Also, if the screen fails due to graphics card or other component, is it possible to connect an external display to use it until I can upgrade to a mini?
    Cheers.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...

  • MBP C2D 15" display blacks out!

My week old MBP C2D 15" blacks out on me. I find that it happens when applying light pressure on the back side, at a surface square underneath F1 - F5 - F - Caps Lock. Light pressure makes it flicker, a little harder results in complete black out. Obviously a production fault and I will of course take it in when I have time... this is my work tool so no way I can just leave it in for days. But that is another issue. Maybe someone else experience the same black out? My build is 8N1037

    Hello
Did you find out the reason? The same message shows up in the system.log of my iMac Core Duo after the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update, but the iMac works fine.
Cleaning all caches, repair user rights, PRAM and SMC Reset didnt help. Also no luck with Preferential Treatment tool to check for corrupted preference files, it didnt find corrupted plist files.

  • 2010 iMac target display mode with 2013 Mac Pro

I have a 2010 27-inch iMac that I want to use with target display mode for a 2013 Mac Pro. I have a mini display port to mini display port cable connecting them. When I plug the cable in the iMac screen goes black, but eventually reverts back to iMac desktop. Pressing Cmd-F2 makes it go black again, but eventually reverts back. I was under the impression that this was the correct cable to use to connect, but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have ideas for what to do? What am I missing? Thanks!

You can use the cheaper single link adapter

if you don't have more than two DVI or HDMI displays.
    <http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202801>
If you will be using more, you can still use a single link adapter, but it must be ACTIVE, such as

  • MacBook Air to iMac Target Display Mode not working

I would like to connect my MacBook Air (13") with my iMac (27") to use the latter as an external display with Target Display Mode.
I followed instructions from a number of posts (http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14264), and connected the two with thunderbolt cable and hit Command-F2 -- the iMac goes black and MacBook stays the same. One post suggested dragging windows over to the iMac as an extended display, and I was able to drag Safari totally off-screen, presumably onto the other display, but the iMac still appeared black
Other issue is that hitting Command-F2 again doesn't do anything. I could only get the iMac out of TDM when I unplugged the thunderbolt cord.
I have a brand new Macbook Air and iMac along with new thunderbolt cable (all purchased at Apple Store in 2014). Would appreciate any help, thanks!

    Additional twist to this...
Tried to troubleshoot and reset the System Management Controller (SMC) per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
When I hit Command-F2, one window from my MacBook will display on the iMac (it was Safari a few times, Outlook once), but neither keyboard/mouse can DO anything in that screen. That window also disappears from the MacBook. And I can only return after unplugging thunderbolt (not command-F2).
    Help please

  • All-in-one cleaning cloth & carrying pouch for the iPhone

As I was looking for an all-in-one solution to protect my iPhone in my pocket that could also double as a cleaning cloth, I came up with a low-cost solution. I purchased a cleaning cloth pouch used for sunglasses from Sunglass Hut.
While being able to fit my iPhone inside, I wasn't quite satisfied with the length, so I folded the bag over and stitched across. Now it feels as if the bag was made for the iPhone. Here's how...
    *Items need:*
Cloth bag from Sunglass Hut for $6.99 (comes in different colors...I chose black)
    Straight pins
    Needle & black thread
    Directions:
    1. Turn the bag inside out
    2. Fold the bottom of the bag 3/4" and pin down
    3. Stitch across about 1/2" away from the folded end.
    4. Turn the bag inside out again...voila!
    enjoy!

In addition, I like how I can wipe fingerprints off the screen while still in the pouch...pristine iPhone everytime

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks

  • I downloaded Mountain Lion OSX three days ago.  On start-up my IMac shows a black DOS screen.  Must unplug the Mac to restart.  Please help!

I downloaded OSX Mountain Lion three days ago.  On startu my IMac shows a black DOS Screen. I must hard boot and it works.  Does anyone have the same problem?

"I did an upgrade from OSX Lion to OSX Mountain Lion and I also get a black boot screen ONLY from a cold startup. If I type exit, my macbook pro startsup normally."
I already made a clean install and it didn't fix anything - the issue still exists (on my MBP 5.1 late 08)
BUT: the most horrible thing is: I also tried to downgrade to 10.7.4 (it worked perfectly before the update to 10.8!!!) and after being back on 10.7.4 it also boots (cold boot) into single user mode...
Now I'm back on 10.8 again (the 2nd clean install) and waiting for a fix...
I tried everything (alls kinds of commands, permission rights and reset all PRAM NVRAM SMC... no luck!)
A friendly guy on the german applehotline told me (after 2h telling him what my problem is): "mountain lion didn't break your mac it must be a hardware error and your mac is out of warrenty - so have a good one...bye"
Maybe apple will bring an update to fix this because it is ofcourse a software error...
    Best regards from Germany
I hope Apple brings an update too. I still have this problem. I also tried to do a clean install, which was a lot of work! So it must be a software problem.
I find it really annoying to get the black boot screen every time I do a cold startup!
I hope more people who have the same problem post something here, to let Apple now that they have to do someting about it!
    Best regards from the Netherlands.

  • No cleaning cloth or stand in 3G?

I bought my iPod Touch around Christmas (8GB), and expected there to be a cleaning cloth. Checked the whole box over and over, nope. Recently I was snooping around the web, and discovered that it should also come with a stand. There isn't a stand either. Do they not come with the 3G? Or am I missing something?

In their office supplies dept. WalMart sells a business card holder made of black metal. It is a sort of "mesh". The design of this holder makes it a perfect stand for my iPod Touch for either vertical or horizontal position and it's only $2.88. If you want a more portable stand, I saw someone use a clear plastic case that looks like the case that our old cassette music tapes came in only it was about half the size. I believe it is a DV cassette case. It holds your earbuds when not in use as a stand.

  • Apple Cleaning Cloth

Just a quick question for fellow MacBook owners--any tips for washing the black suede-like cloth that comes packaged with the laptop? The cloth used to work REALLY well for cleaning the screen, but I think it needs to be washed.
    Thanks for your help!

I haven't taken mine out of the packaging and don't plan to. It's just too nicely packaged.
However - it's just a polyester microfiber cleaning cloth. You can find something similar at most opticians and some drug/discount stores for $2 to $3.
