Imac G5 LCD

Are 17" iMac G5 screens interchangeable? More specifically, can I put a non-isight 17"screen in an isight model?
Thanks

Hi Kaynray
You will have to compare the two side by side, while the actual display itself maybe the same it looks like the frame and brackets are different.

iSight 17" G5 > http://www.welovemacs.com/6613789pr.html
You also might find that an Early 17" Core Duo's display is the same, but again has a different frame and brackets.

  • Where to buy imac G5 LCD display 17in

    Hi,
I need to replace my imac G5 display. It develops two approx 1.5in black blobs at the bottom left screen, after rainwater got into it and seep into it.
I have dismantled the imac and got access to the LCD. Remove the rust spots on the frame and check that it is dry. Put everything back but I dont seem able to remove the blobs and some vertical lines.
The problem is confined to the right half of the screen..and the blobs and vertical lines are stable (not growing).
I think if I replace with a good LCD display, I should be able to get back my Imac into shape.
Anyone has experience replacing the imac G5 LCD. (D-I-Y).

  • IMac to lcd tv image not clear.  How do I fix that?

I have a mini dvi to s-video/component adapter to send signal to a 22" lcd tv in another room. the tv is capable of the same resolution (1680x1050) as the imac display. for some reason the image is not as sharp and clear on the tv as it is on the imac, regardless if I use the component out or s-video out. I've adjusted settings in the display as well. how do I get the image on the lcd tv to look as clear as it does on the computer? Will the mini dvi to dvi and dvi to hdmi adapters change everything? thanks

Your TV maybe capable of the same resolution as your mac, however, the s-video/component is your bottle neck. Despite the fact that your TV matches your monitor resolution, s-video/component is only capable of producing a standard definition image (480i @ 640x480). Your TV is stretching the image to match its resolution which is why it's coming out so blurry.
If your TV has any extra HDMI inputs (or one of the rare that have a standard DVI port), you might want to look into getting a mini-DVI to DVI adapter if your TV has a DVI port. If it does not have a DVI port, then you'll need to get a mini-DVI to DVI adapter as well as a DVI to HDMI adapter. Using these methods should match your resolution and everything will look like they should.
    Hope it helps =]

  • New iMac 24" LCD issue

Hi all, hope somebody here can give me an accurate answer or how serious my problem is.. Basically the whole iMac runs beautifully however just a problem with the LCD screen - on the left side about a 1/4 my browser window with a white background is bright white - but when i drag the window towards the centre to the right side it is all dirty white (dull light brown) - is this a serious problem with the LCD screen? I've only had it under two days now..
I'm not sure if this is a normal behaviour for an LCD

CJ, you have a sharp eye. It took me two days before I noticed it, but there is a slight variation from the extreme, white left side and the rest of the screen. There was some mention about these screens being bad for calibration (that conclusion is incorrect, I use a Monaco X-Rite DTP94 and ColorEyes to get good color fidelity) ... but I am disturbed by this brightness variation.
I considered returning my iMac, so I dropped by the Apple store today and checked out all of the 24" iMacs. I believe this occurs on all of them. I spent some time with an incredulous Apple Store employee, and after a while of staring and comparing he admitted that there was a slight variation. It might not actually be differing brightness, but a slightly different tone between the extreme left and right sides of the screen.
Anyhow I think I'll just get an Eizo 24" monitor to run as an expanded desktop with the new iMac, but from my inspection this appears to be a phenomenon that affects all 24" monitors, and returning your iMac for a new one will probably end in the same result.
You have hawk eyes to even notice it, it's a very subtle gradation, but nevertheless real.

  • Want to use iMac G5 LCD as PC monitor

    Hello, here is my problem:
I have iMac G5 that I can't use it (logic board problems, can't finish OS installation) but LCD works just fine! Inverter works fine too.
I want to use iMac LCD instead of my regular (still CRT) monitor.
My question is: is it possible to cut off THIS side of LVDS cable (cable that connects logic board and LCD) and instead that little 30-pin connector put DVI connector so I can connect VGA/DVI output from my PC to that (new) DVI connector that goes into LCD? I hope you understand what I want to do!
If someone has other idea how to use iMac G5 20inch LCD like PC monitor, please post it.

I also would like to try and do the same thing.
I have a g5 imac ALS... just had the motherboard recapped and power supply replaced. It works but freezes up intermittently and the fans are just insane...throttling up to max every 30 seconds for a couple minutes fo no reason (temp is ok), the last time I turned it on I realized that it has become pretty much unusable as a reliable family server. We keep the computer on our kitchen counter and the smaller G5 fits well and matches a whole lot better since it's white.
I don't mind cutting or soldering...is it possible to tap into the main cable? It would make a sweet pairing with a new mac mini.

  • Convert iMac to LCD Monitor

I wont be doing it for a few years yet, but I was just wondering if it was possible to convert the 1G Aluminum iMac to a standalone LCD monitor. Because it was a beautiful screen in it and would like to use it on my new computer once the iMac is useless. Is it possible?

It's "possible," given sufficient electrical hacking skills. It would be a difficult and ugly process. In other words, there is no plug on the iMac that turns it into an regular display.
would like to use it on my new computer once the iMac is useless
By the time that iMac is "useless" as a computer, the lamps lighting the LCD will have dimmed somewhat, so the display may not look quite as great as it does now. When you do get a new computer that needs a display, it is likely that the iMac will still be more valuable than a reasonable LCD display. Sell the iMac and buy a new bright LCD. Or better yet, get the 8-core 10 GHz iMac with Mac OS 11.x that will be the new model by that time.

  • IMAC G5 LCD screen

I am on my third LCD screen and I am presently waiting for another LCD screen which of course is back ordered. I have been told that this is NOT a common problem. I have approx 100 colored lines on my screen at this time. Has anyone had any success with a replaced LCD screen ? Or how many screens does one have to go through before Apple replaces the computer??????? From all the complaints it sounds like there is a big problem with the G5. I purchased mine in Dec 2005.....they came out with the new one a few months later.

  • Replacing Imac G5 LCD Screen

    Hi
I cant afford a new Imac so:
I am considering buying a G5 with a broken screen and one with a perfectly working one and fitting the working one in the broken one.
Has anyone had any experience of doing this and can give me any help or point me to any sites?
    Thanks

    Hey Mark,
I am considering buying a G5 with a broken screen and one with a perfectly working one and fitting the working one in the broken one.
So what you're saying is that you'd buy a non working one with a working screen and swap the screens?
That should work but here in the states even dead G5s are a bit pricey. So what you intend to do is swap the logic boards?
Right off the top of my head you'll need special tools. At least a case release tool.
BTW you're in the G4 (flat panel) discussion so people over there would be more help to you. If anyone's actually done this.

  • Imac G5 lcd pressure spots

Is this normal? since the day I brought it home I have noticed a slight fog or what seems to be "pressure" on the four sides of the screen. Is this covered under warranty? In the dark it is more noticable.

I searched through the knowledge base and found an
article that seemed to relate..sorry, did not write
down the number... one article said you could set
your computer to sleep and another article said to
create a totally white background to make the desktop
picture. I chose to set the computer to sleep when
not in use and the dark areas of the screen have
disappeared. Hope this helps. It worked for me.
Sorry but that didn't work for me.. the spots are still there

  • IMac 400 VGA Out to LCD Monitor works but CRT Display is Black

    Hello.
Our church has an iMac 400 with the VGA out port in the back. We connect the iMac an LCD projector to display PowerPoint presentations.
Intermittently, the iMac's CRT display works, then the next time it may not work. Some Sunday mornings it won't work at all, though the desktop can be seen on the screen overhead because the Mac is sending the signals to the LCD projector, which worksf ine. If I disconnect the VGA cable and boot the iMac, then the display works perfectly. Everytime.
I've changed the VGA cable twice, thinking it was bad, but there is no consistent rhyme or reason why this occurs. Some Sundays, both the CRT and the LCD projector work as they should. Other times, only the projector works.
The VGA port always works because the LCD projector always displays the desktop. But the screen on the iMac itself is used as a viewing monitor of sorts for the speaker, and we need it to work properly (the speaker faces the iMac, while the screen for the LCD projector is over his head and behind him).
    Any input would be appreciated.

It sounds like you may already have the answer in your post... Dual Link versus "not compatible"
The only other thing I can suggest is to connect them up, then go to System Prefs --> Displays --> Detect Displays
That works for me when it doesn't connect immediately - but then again most of the time my display notices the input immediately

  • Monitor Mirroring - iMac 24 with damaged LCD screen

My iMac 24 LCD screen is damaged to the point where it is basically worthless. I have attached an external monitor via a VGA adaptor. Problem...since I cannot see the screen, I cannot get into system preferences to select "detect displays". Is there any way for the computer to detect the external monitor automatically? Or other suggestions. Thanks.

  • Seagate Ex-HD with IMac - How to connect 2nd Firewire Device

I just bought a new Seagate ExternalFree Agent HD to use with my IMac on a Firewire 400 but was wondering if I keep the HD connected what can I do to connect another device (video camera) at the same time with another firewire? I thought my IMac had 2 Firewire ports but it looks the 2nd port is for something else. Is there some kind of Hub I could buy or could I connect the camera through the HD, it appears there is another Firewire connection there? Thanks and any advice would be helpful?

If yours is an early through late iMac G4 LCD flat panel computer
which shipped between 2002 and 2004, they all have the same
    number of FireWire ports: 2 - 400 MBit/s (8W total power.)
You may need to look into a FireWire Hub, one that is self-powered
from an external AC power adapter and not use limited FW port
power from the computer, as that is limited.
' firewire hub, powered ' - google search:
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=firewirehub+powered&aq=3&oq=FireWirehub
{If you have a different configuration of iMac than the one with
the half-dome white base & chrome display arm, you may need
to compare your machine with either the iMac G5 or Intel iMac
    forum areas, since the hardware did change over the years.}
    Be sure to not overload the FireWire, or other ports on the Mac;
no matter which model or version you may have. In the case
of USB, a self-powered (uses AC adapter) hub is recommended
and in the case of FireWire, some products may have a port in
them, but to daisy-chain these is a mistake. Underpowered
device issues, or overtaxing the Mac power supply may result.
An external firewire enclosed hard disk drive with accessory FW
    port may have been supplied with that port given extra power;
if the FireWire drive uses an AC power supply and not port power.
If the external FW drive is in heavy use, you may be able to tell
if the port on there can support a camera. It probably won't.
By the Mid-2007 Intel iMac, there was a difference in the FW
    port configuration: 1 - 400 MBit/s, & 1 - 800 MBit/s (7W each.)
So, you may have an iMac with two different FireWire ports.
    Some towers also have or had support for both FW types;
and Ethernet, USB ported devices, and audio options.
For those machines with a less than desired FireWire
    support, there are FireWire Hubs, in both specifications;
and retailers or online store links show them in both
Mac and more general PC listings. These would be
self-powered Hubs and not rely on the Mac port power.
These are a bit different and not all peripherals that say they
may work with one or the other will necessarily do so in both.
An example maybe if you buy a FW 800 external HD enclosure
and it says it also supports FW400. It may not boot OSX in 800.
The computer specifications should be available in Apple Support
in that section; and a current version of the MacTracker download
database of most things Apple computer should; see: mactracker.ca
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Display burn in - Apple does not want to replace the LCD

Recently my iMac 24” LCD display began to have “screen burn ins“ or image persistence on the LCD. I have done extensive online research about the issue, I tried setting my screensaver to pure white and running the apple screensaver to resolve the issue. I did not use my computer any more extensively than any of my other macs, so the image burn in came as a surprise to me this early in the Mac’s life span. I understand that the issue exists, and would not surprise me if my computer was several years old and it was never turned off. I will have to argue that the “screen burn in” happened too early for my iMac.
I took my iMac to an Apple store and waited to speak with a Genius and have a diagnosis. After the Genius ran his diagnosis he said that I am out of warranty, however he agreed with me that it was too early for something like this to happen. He proposed that my LCD screen would be replaced, and said that he would give me a break and make a “one time warranty exception and not charge me for the new LCD and replacement based on the circumstance.” The genius placed an order for an LCD panel for my iMac, printed out the work order and shook my hand, I was extremely grateful thanked the Genius for making such an exception.
After leaving my iMac in the store for repairs for 5 days, with excitement and anticipation I picked up my iMac which was claimed to be “fixed”. I got home opened up the box and plugged in the iMac and the first thing that I noticed was a dead pixel that I recognized from the old LCD, what are the odds of the new display having a dead pixel in the exact same spot? I called back to the apple store with my repair number at hand and confirmed that my LCD was never replaced.
I thought to myself, maybe they fixed it, but just to be safe I used the computer until I noticed nothing changed the “burn in issue” is still here. So I created a background image in photoshop to purposely leave on for an hour as proof of the problem. I called back to the apple store early in the morning and talked with the technical center, the girl on the phone said “I remember your mac” I thought we had it fixed. I asked to make sure that the LCD that was ordered for the sole purpose of fixing the burn in issue which I had was still at the store, it was confirmed that it was.
I came by the apple store and a different Genius looked at my computer, saw the excessive burn in. He ran the “Flurry” Screen saver, which helped remove the current burn in but was still not fully removed. He then told me that they would not replace the LCD, and that I should set my screen saver to every 5 minutes and lower the brightness to reduce the load on the screen. I argued that even if I can get rid of the problem after running the screensaver for at least an hour, the burn in just keeps coming back, and fast too.
I came home setup the screensaver settings and began using my machine, not using it for even more than an hour I saw the burn ins from the store and some new ones that came from my doc, and finder window and shadow lines distorting the entire screen, almost making it look like mud lines.
I took a few pictures with a DSL camera at the highest resolution, but I am not sure if this shows enough to really show:
    Doc burned in:
#1 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1477936/apple/DSC_0751.jpg (need to make it 100% to see)
#2 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1477936/apple/DSC_0754.jpg (need to make it 100% to see)
Does any one know what I should do now?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I think that regardless that this was a different Genius, the Apple Store has made a commitment to you to repair the iMac out of warranty and should honor this commitment. I would go back to the Apple Store and speak directly to the Store Manager with your original paperwork in hand for the repair that was not completed.
Should you not receive satisfaction from the Store Manager then I would call Apple Care and immediately ask to have your call escalated to a Customer Care representative. Explain the issue to the rep and ask for their assistance in receiving the repair commitment originally made to you by the Apple Store.
Have all necessary paperwork for the committed repair at hand during your phone conversation. Take notes. Get the name and the position of each person to whom you speak. Speak firmly but politely. Do not get angry or make any threats. The minute you mention a lawyer or any other such threat the conversation will be over and Apple will fall back on the fact the Mac is out of warranty and any opportunity of getting a repair will likely be gone.
