IMac kernel panic when using iPhoto

Hi
I am experiencing iPhoto quits/crashes and kernel panics when attempting to import photos. The iPhoto forum have offered lots of helpful advice but I haven't managed to fix this yet. it's been suggested to me that I might find help here too - any suggestions? My Mac disk "appears to be OK".
I'm running iPhoto v9.2.3 on OS X 10.6.8
Many thanks in advance.

Think this is one of the kernel panics rather than an iPhoto crash -

  • Kernel panic when using iPhoto '11

Any help or pointers you might have for this would be most apreciated. Since adding a lot of photos from a recent trip, my iPhoto has started crashing, seemingly at random. First was 7/1, then 7/4, 7/14 and now 7/23. I've added about 2500 images, so it's not too much, and the overall size of my library is about 80GB, well under the amount its supposed to be able to manage. The last kernel panic produced this report:

Does anyone know what this indicates? As per other discussions on here, I have reset my permissions, rebuilt my iPhoto Library (after having backed it up elsewhere) and run the long version of the AHT with no troubles found. If I have to take it into an Apple Store then that's fine too - just wondering if there is anything else I should cover off before I go to that step. Any help you might have would be appreciated - this is not an area I know much about!!

Uninstalled LittleSnitch and ran iPhoto with lots of other applications last night to try and reproduce the same conditions which have caused the last kernel panics and it seems stable. The combination of iTunes, Mail, Chrome, Word and iPhoto has in the past been what's caused this and made try and use iPhoto just by itself. Maybe this will resolve it? I'll monitor a few more days and see what happens.
Interestingly, how did you pick this?

  • Kernel Panic when using Garageband with Blue Snowball USB mic

    *HI ALL,*
*I purchased Mac Pro recently about 3 weeks ago. I am on the latest updates including the recent firmware update. However whenever I use garageband with external USB mic(Blue Snowball) my Kernel Panics and OS freezes and forces me to Power On again. It happened 20 times so far in few hours.*
*I opened garageband first time today after bought this external mic from apple store. I did not use garageband without this mic plugged into USB, I only used garageband with MIC plugged in and in couple of minutes to 5 minutes of using garageband the Kernel Panic occurs. Need your help please. Here is the message I get after login again which I reported consistently to Apple. Any immediate help is appreciated. I use iMove, iPhoto and other apps without any problem. Harddisk verification went o.k.*

I've been getting a number of kernel panics when using USB Mics with Skype, though I have not experienced any crashes when using Garageband.
The crash report cited the AppleUSBAudio driver as the culprit. Here's the set up:
    MacBookPro Core2 2.66 15"
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Blue Snowflake USB Mic, Blue Snowball USB Mic
    Skype (latest rev - 2.7.0.257)
    AppleUSBAudio.kext version 2.5.6b3
Seems to be a lot of crashiness with USB Audio in 10.5.2 - let's hope we see a patch soon

  • Kernel Panic when using AppleTalk via AirPort Express

I thought that the issues pertaining to kernel panics when using AppleTalk to connect via AirPort to remote server were solved in the latest (10.5) version of MacOSX - but they are unfortunately not solved.
    ok, so I connect to the remote (macosx) server via the "Connect to..." menu item in Finder. i have a working internet connection up and running via AirPort {AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87) Firmware: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9)}
i log in and all is fine - until midway through copying some files - kernel panic. the panics can occur even while doing stuff locally, while the AppleTalk connection is just sitting idle in the background.
i am on MacOSX 10.5.4, iMac 2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM.
the kernel panics have been occuring since the Leopard upgrade - never before (on either this machine or my older iMac G5).
    any suggestions?
    thanks in advance,

Just purchased a new iMac and after transferring all info from my old iMac.  Now when using iPhoto slideshow it  displays the pictures in reverse order.

There's a bug in iPhoto 9.5.1 and Mavericks that affects slideshows played directly from an album.  The slideshow will not play correctly if the photos have been sorted manually.  Any other type of sort, date, rating, keyword or title, will play correctly.
If you need that manual sort of pictures for your slideshow create the slideshow in iPhoto's slideshow mode.

  • My iMac kernel panics when backing up via WIFI

Scenario:  my iMac, running 10.8.4 (latest version) backing up via WIFI over Wireless N, kernel panics and crashes on initial backup.
I upgraded my router to go Wireless AC.  I purchased a 4TB WD My Book to go with it.
I was using the standard Verizon ActionTec and an 1TB iomega NAS drive attaced via ethernet to the ActionTec.  Time Machine worked fine with that scenario, however, the 1TB was becoming too small for my needs and I wanted to segregate my network.
Moving to AirPort Extreme and a 4TB MyBook was a great solution.  On page 13 of the AirPort Extreme manual, it indicates this is an acceptable configuration.
On the WIFI backup, the iMac kernel panics and crashes.  Here is the error message:
    panic (cpu 3 caller 0xffffff80272f3458):  "hfs_swap_HFSPlusBTInternalNode: attr inline #21 too big (attrSize=2097202)\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.24.15/bsd/hfs/hfs_endian.c:822
My Apple Support rep told me to ethernet the iMac to the Extreme for the initial backup.  I did that and the backup worked, with out crashing.
Then I added some files to the iMac and did an incremental Time Machine Backup.
Recall that with the ActionTec/iomega, I had no such issues.  So I attached the iomega to the AirPort Extreme and attempted an initial backup.
My iMac kernel paniced and crashed.   It's either the AirPort Extreme or the iMac with the issue.  Or the marriage of the two.
    Any ideas?

If you have the iSight model G5, you cannot self repair the insides/remove the HD (will void your warranty/AppleCare). You will need to take the computer to your local AASP for a professional to remove.

  • Kernel panic when using external hard drive for library

I have been using an external hard drive to manage my iTunes library for over a year. As of today, I have had three kernel panics when trying to use iTunes. I was downloading a purchase from the music store and the first panic occurred. Subsequent panics occurred immediately on startup of iTunes. Using the guest account (with default internal drive library settings), everything works fine. Both drives have been verified by Disk Utility and all software is up-to-date. No clue how to proceed.

Yes, but you need to have the external drive on and mounted when starting iTunes. You can add the external HD to your log in items list in System Preferences -> Accounts to handle this.

  • Constant kernel panics while using iPhoto 11

I'm hopeful that someone can help me sort this out....it's getting very frustrating. It doesn't "just work"....not anymore.
First off, I'm using an early 2009 (unibody) 17" MBP, 2.93 GHz, fully loaded (for this model) with 8GB RAM, 750 GB HDD with plenty of room left, running the latest Mountain Lion and iPhoto versions/updates. Everything is stock - I haven't done anything funky hardware or software wise, except add more RAM and a bigger HDD, which I did well over a year ago.
I've been trying to do a large project in iPhoto 11 - manually selecting photos from my huge photo database into a specific album, from which I'll order a hard copy photo album book from Apple - at least that was the plan. Even if I'm ever allowed to get this done, I may wind up so frustrated with Apple that I go somewhere else...
So I'll be working along, listening to iTunes, with maybe Mail open in the background - really nothing else - and, wham, black screen. It doesn't even panic error message (grey screen) on me....it just quits. The song being listened to in iTunes stutters for a couple of seconds before it quits.
This happened to me 2 days ago, then earlier today, and again just now. The 2 earlier times left behind a kernel panic log file (both shown below), but this last one didn't even leave that. The computer reboots, tells me it suffered an unexpected shutdown, can it send the data to Apple (the 2 earlier episodes), etc. And of course, when I restart iPhoto it wants to verify my database. Each time I'm afraid it'll tell me the dbase got corrupted beyond repair by the unexpected shut down. So far I've been lucky enough not to have that happen.
After the first episode, I ran a disk check and permissions check from my recovery partition, then ran an extended AHT - all of these came up fine.
After the episode earlier today, I ran disk check from the recovery partition, rebooted into safe mode (I saw a blog where someone suggested that potentially corrective diagnostics were ran when booting into safe mode), then rebooted into AHT and looped it (the routine check, not the extended check) 11 times - all of these tests were again negative. On a hunch, I changed my battery-saving video mode (System Preferences / Energy Saver ...) to "high performance" to see if using the stronger video card would make a difference. No such luck.
This time I rebooted into safe mode (from the same blog I read before - a guy with a similar problem said that in his case it hadn't happened to him again while in SM). My iPhoto dbase is still being "checked" as I write this, so I have no idea yet if running in SM will allow me to work uninterrupted.
This ONLY happens while I'm running iPhoto, and in each of the 3 cases, was actively using the app. I've had no kernel panics outside of using iPhoto.
And, the last 2 kernel panics (which left logs behind), showed all com.apple kexts except for a single one associated with AirParrot. Since I never use AirParrot, I uninstalled it using their supplied uninstaller. I then followed up with Find Any File to make sure all AirParrot traces were gone, which they were. So, even with the one 3rd party kext gone, this problem happened again, just now.
I don't think it's hardware - a lot of AHT negative testing doesn't support that. There isn't any 3rd party junk swimming around. That leaves Apple software. And if I'm reading the crash logs correctly, it all has something to do with the graphics system. But that's about as far as my knowledge can take me. Searching the net for similar experiences has landed with with many references to similar experiences - but none matching mine, really. A lot of calls for hardware replacements, trips to the genius bar, etc. But again, my case doesn't seem hardware.
Sorry for the long description - it doesn't seem like a straightforward problem.
Very grateful for any helpful advice I can get - I've got to get this project done.
    Thanks!

As I had mentioned, I had removed AirParrot in its entirety, and that followed the two panics which generated the logs I showed. The third panic, which prompted me to post here, generated no log, and AirParrot was gone by that time.
As it so happens, the thing had a fourth panic - log shown below. AirParrot is clearly gone.
It is an iPhoto problem - what else could it possibly be? iPhoto is the only thing (and I use my computer quite a bit) that incites it, and repeated AHT's have failed to show anything.
I'm just hopeful that someone has experienced this and knows a solution, or that Apple is watching, and would like to fix their software.
Failing that, I'll have to let Apple have my money for nothing, and will need to look for another photo manager, and I'm happy to take suggestions in that area as well.
    Thank you!

  • Kernel Panic when using a new RAID 5 array

I recently set up a new Sans Digital 5 disk 7.2TB hardware RAID 5 array that's connected to a Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 PCI-X card which has been updated to the latest drivers. The same card supports a number of JBOD enclosures that run as mirrored RAIDs under SoftRAID 4.0. My system is a 2.7Ghz DP Tower.
Upon trying to copy to the new RAID 5 volume I encountered a kernel panic and system freeze complete with wailing fans. After a few system restarts and a call to Sans Digital I tried to connect the RAID via USB upon the recommendation of tech support. Rather than causing a crash while copying I received an error message in the copy progress window that said that some files were locked and the process could not be completed and the RAID was no longer mounted in the finder.
I called Sans Digital back and they said it was probably a defective enclosure. I have just received a new one and have put that into service. All seemed fine until, when I was 30GB into a 900GB copy, the system froze. I have also tried to copy fewer files (400GB) and still get a Panic. When the RAID is idle there does not seem to be a problem. The last time the problem occurred the copy progress bar hung but the system did not fully lock up. The LEDs on the front panel of the RAID enclosure were flickering rapidly but no data was copying from my other drive. I turned off the RAID and was able to use my mouse again and restart my machine with a normal restart.
My system is running OS 10.5.8. When the RAID is off my computer runs fine.
Not sure what to try next. Any help would be appreciated - Thank you.

    Hi-
I'd be interested to know if Sonnet has any comments regarding the issue.
In Utilities/Console/Logs, there should be some indication of what is occurring when the crashes occur.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro experiencing Kernel Panics when using iPhone 4 as modem

Recently purchased a custom MacBook Pro 15" with the upgraded 2.3 ghz quad core i7 processor. I immediately installed 8 GB of Ram and a 750GB 7200 speed HD from OWC when the unit arrived. All was well when testing from home, and had zero issues after using the Mac assistant to pull apps and user data from my old MBP, which I then sold on ebay.
Brought my new MBP to work, where I use my iPhone 4 (not jailbroken) to data share, using the personal hotspot. I connect the iPhone 4 to the MBP via USB, to keep the battery on the iPhone 4 charged.
While at work, I almost immediately started getting chain Kernel Panics on the new MBP. After hard powering down and restarting, the Kernel Panics would return at unpredictable intervals, sometimes an hour or more, sometimes within seconds of booting. I immediately suspected the RAM from OWC, as bad ram is the leading cause of Kernel Panics, according to a quick google search. So here is what I did in order, although keep in mind that this took place over a period of weeks, where I would intermittently go days w/out a Kernel Panic, and I was going crazy trying to figure this out.
    1. Took apart machine and re-seated OWC Ram-did not fix
    2. Attempted to confirm OWC RAM was bad before sending back to OWC, moved to step 3
    3. Put Apple Hardware Test DVD in and let it run the extended hardware test in loop mode over a weekend (72 hours), with no report of any hardware failure
    4. Some reports on the internet seemed to indicate the Apple Hardware test was not always reliable in discovering bad ram, so I purchased memtest, which I then looped and ran for 12 hours to test ram, with no report of failure.
    5. Performed clean install of OS X 10.6 from Apple DVD, to include wiping the drive-Kernel Panics remained.
    6. Removed OWC ram and installed Apple original Ram-Kernel Panics remained
    7. Realized that at home I was on WiFi, and was not getting Kernel Panics (at least none that I could remember over the course of 2 weeks)
    8. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via USB as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics occurred regularly.
    9. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via WiFi as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics have not returned (running 6 hours so far w/out Kernel Panic)
At the beginning I had a Kensington Turbo Mouse connected as well, but over time I unplugged it to remove it from my troubleshooting list. At this point I must conclude that when using the iPhone 4 to data share over USB is the cause of my Kernel Panics.
All of the above was the long winded version of, my iPhone 4 is crashing my Mac. I just wanted interested parties to know what I've done already before suggestions are made.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone using their iPhone 4 to data share and connecting via USB w/out experiencing Kernel Panics? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to why this would occur?
FWIW, I've tried more than one USB cable to connect the iPhone to my MBP, and experienced Kernel Panics w/ both cables. I also fully restored my iPhone 4 when the recent 4.3 iOS update was released, so I don't think it's a software issue w/ the iPhone. I do not have a second iPhone 4 to test with, I also do not have a second Mac to test with.
Thanks up front for your thoughts and/or assistance.
    Bill

    Hi everyone !
I'm new on this forum (and French btw, so I apologize in advance for any mistake (: )
I've bought the brand new MBP 13' few weeks ago, and I kept having this problem until now, I just installed K64 Enabler, and it seems to work perfectly, so I wanted you all to know it
Thanks for all the help you brought me !
Hope Apple will fix this once for all !
    See you !

  • Kernel panic when using FAT formatted external storage

I have a PowerBook G4 17" with 1GB RAM and since updating to 10.4.8 from 10.4.7 I have received on three occasions a kernel panic, i.e. a message that says "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Looking at the conditions under which this event occured, on all three occasions, this looks to be disk I/O related using external drives however the cause could be something else like Spotlight indexing for example - I am hoping this is not hardware.
On the occasions where the problem has occured the attached storage devices have been:
    1. A FAT formatted, bus powered Firewire attached 2.5" IDE drive
    2. A FAT formatted PC Card drive
I had this happen to me last night with the PC card drive when I found I couldn’t delete any data from the drive but could write and overwrite data. My internal IDE drive seems to be fine however I decided to eject the drive and reinsert it but on reinsertion the system could not see or mount it. I then tried a FAT formatted CF card with PC Card reader/adapter – same thing, it wouldn’t mount. I then decided it was time to reboot and that is when the message popped up as the transparent grey bitmap (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106227). After rebooting I got a kernel error stack trace telling me something bad happened hence the reboot. This thread seems to be very similar to my problem except with a new Intel version of the 17":
    http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/312947/what-does-mean-when/
Any ideas? In all cases this has occured when using an external FAT formatted drive and actively writing data to it - it doesn't seem to matter how it is attached or specifically which drive it is. I have not had this problem previously when using external storage media and I am not using any backup software when this occurs - I am simply saving files from various applications be it PhotoShop or a Safari download. One last note, I am using Intego VirusBarrier X4.
Right now my plan will be to run the disk utility, disable anti-virus and possibly disable indexing on external drives and try to reproduce the issue - the only problem with this is with the exception of the 10.4.8 update, what changed?
    PowerBook G4 17" 1.33Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1GB RAM

Funnily enough I can backup to my USB attached bus powered 2.5" drive formatted as Mac OS Extended, this is why I am wondering if there is a relationship between externally attached FAT formatted storage and kernel panics.
My system disk checks out with no errors BTW - I also rarely travel with my PowerBook so it is relatively well looked after and should have a lower exposure to issues relating to faulty hardware.

  • Kernel panic when using kernel26.img

I'm such a beginner on this type of thing that I don't even know what I need to post here to help debug this.
Anyway I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.17.8-1 this morning.  As the upgrade process suggested I tried changing from initrd26.img to kernel26.img, but when I try to boot I get the following error and hang:
    Loading Initramfs
export 25: i8042.dumbkbd bad variable name
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
    My menu.list contains this:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=795 i8042.dumbkbd
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
I have to add i8042.dumbkbd to avoid a problem with my Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite when I boot.  Basically, the problem is that when I boot without i8042.dumbkbd the keyboard doesn't work.  Nothing I type appears, I can't even do ctrl-alt-delete to reboot.  Using i8042.dumbkbd solves this problem although my keyboard lights (Caps lock, etc) no longer work.
What else do I need to add to this post to help resolve?

arkanoid wrote:maybe there's something with hardware detection, maybe try using mkinitcpio with less options like said in the wiki above ?
No, I already stated the issue:
phrakture wrote:I see the issue... the problem is the '.' in the param name.  i didn't account for that in mkinitcpio (poor choice on my part).
Sorry for not updating - I updated the release but didn't rebuild the package in [current].  I will do that right now.

  • Kernel Panics when using Airport Extreme Card...I think

So I have been to the Apple store 7 times in the last three days...here are the problems I've been having and what they've done. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
All of a sudden I started having Kernel Panic crashes (a least 5 a day.) Seemed to mostly happen when I was browsing (using Firefox.) Also I would usually experience an intermittent connection to the internet before a crash. (i.e. I would be browsing, then the connection would be lost...I'd turn off Airport...turn back on...then a few minutes later while browsing...crash)
    Here is what I've done:
    - At first we thought it was software...after two erase/install, that wasn't it.
    - Maybe the new RAM from OWC...re-sat the RAM, took RAM out and replaced with factory RAM...had OWC send new RAM, that wasn't it.
    - Maybe it is logic board, factory RAM, or Airport Extreme card...Apple replaced today...and THAT wasn't it.
    - Got home after all these new parts and it crashed again while browsing wirelessly. So, I thought, "Could my Qwest wireless network be doing this!?!?!"
Have tried some different settings with Qwest and am awaiting another crash.
Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? (2 erase and installs, a new logic board, new RAM, new AE card, didn't do it!)
I so appreciate any help or advice. I'm in the middle of a couple of major projects and cannot bear to go back to the Apple store for an 8th time!

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
    com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
    com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
    com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
    com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

  • Kernel panic when using Apple Wireless Keyboard (bluetooth)

I kept getting kernel panics (gray multi-language screen) at seemingly random intervals on my MacBook Pro with 10.5. After a while I realized that part of the time it seemed to be when I would type something that woke up my Apple Wireless Keyboard (the new thin one) and cause it to reconnect to the laptop, then the other times seemed to be when I would go out of range of the keyboard where it would normally bring up the "Connection Lost" notification.
I have disabled bluetooth for now and no longer use the keyboard (it was my only bluetooth device) and the kernel panics have stopped.
Has anyone else noticed this? And perhaps more importantly, does anyone know of a workaround until this bug is fixed?

Same problem here today. I've got a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse at home. I put the computer to sleep at home and when I tried to wake it up at work I had a kernel panic..
I'm just doing some research now of what a kernel panic is at all.

  • Kernel panic when using boot camp assistant

OS X 10.5.2 all updates. 65GB of free space.
Installed Boot Camp Assistant from the OSX DVD that came with my MacBook(10.5)
After installation of Boot Camp Assistant ran software update (no updates needed)
Launch Boot Camp and after sliding the amount to use for the Windows Partition (15GB,20GB,25GB equal, doesnt matter the size I've tried them all) it will prepare for partition.
Then kernel panic (dimmed screen with text on grey stating must restart computer)
Once restarted the HDD has loss the space from the Boot Camp partition. I have run the Disk Utilities from the DVD to repair the disc.
This has happened each and every time (5x).
What is needed to use boot camp without causing os x to crash?
I've also.. at each kernel panic sent the report to apple.

    All,
I believe I have discovered a solution for this problem. It at least helped me out. And no, it didn't involve buying iDefrag. This solution is totally free, but it involves a bit of work. It also involves iDefrag. Confused? Read on:
The problem is that the partition literally involves chopping off a contiguous block of free space at the END of your existing partition. I was clued onto this by trying to resize the partition with Disk Utility (which also failed with a kernel panic). The problem I was having was simply that, since I had all but filled my hard drive before this, I had data for files spread all over my hard drive.
So what was I to do? There's no way to view where a file is physically on the disk. The iDefrag utility would do what I need, but cost $34. Then it hit me: what if I could defragment my hard drive manually? All I would need is an interface that shows me the physical layout of the data on the hard disk so I'd know which files I would need to either delete (or duplicate and delete). I correctly hypothesized that the DEMO of iDefrag would do this for me.
So I began, identifying the last file before contiguous white space began. The goal being to carve out a good chunk of "white" empty blocks on the right-hand side. For those wondering about the Header file at the very end of the disk, don't worry. It doesn't seem to matter. For example, I see a huge file. The blocks take up half the screen. I select it and open the Info window and see that it's a digital video file from iMovie. The info window has a selectable file path. I copy it, switch to the finder and hit "Apple-Shift-G", paste the file path and hit enter and I am taken there. I find the file and do one of three things:
    1. If it's a file I want or need to keep, but it's a file I created, then I just duplicate it with Ctrl-D. Delete the original, rename the copy to the original name and empty the trash.
    2. If it's a file I want or need to keep, but the SYSTEM generated it, I'll need to enter my password as I duplicate it. Enter the password again as you delete the original. You will need to use terminal and the "sudo mv" command to rename the file to the original name (Sorry). Empty the trash.
    3. If it's a file I don't need, either created by me or the system, delete it and empty the trash.
"But wait", you might ask. "Steps 1 and 2 appear to do nothing! If you copy the file and rename it to be the same name as the original, nothing is being accomplished!" It might seem like nothing at first, but the FILE SYSTEM created the new file at the EARLIEST possible contiguous free disk space. If you're like me, you freed up a bunch of disk space to make this Boot Camp thing possible. This is evidenced by the white "holes" earlier in the disk (earlier as in "more to the left"). The copy of your file used the earlier white space. Deleting the original turns the blocks white!
Often your processes will create a lot of little files around the same place. For example, a World of Warcraft update might create a lot of little files at the same time. If you get to a point on the disk where it seems like a lot of files in the /Library/Application Support/ folder were created, just copy and paste the least common denominator. If you buy music once in a while, it might be your entire Music Folder that could be worth duplicating! No need to do it file-by-file. The important thing is that files to the right of the bar get moved more to the left of the bar, leaving with you CONTIGUOUS FREE SPACE at the END of your disk.
Finally, after doing this for about an hour, I wanted to see how big a partition I could create. Originally I'd been trying to create a 20 GB partition. From my estimates, if I had tried to create a 9 GB partition, I'd have been just fine the whole time. But that's not enough to play Bioshock! When I finished I took out the ruler and measured the bar on my screen.
The whole bar was 289 milimeters. The contiguous white space ended at 239 milimeters. That's 50 milimeters of continuous space. That's 20.9% of my disk capacity of 93.4 gigs. That, my friends, is 19.54 gigs. I created an 18 GB parition and voila, it worked fine!
I hope this helps some people. It's definitely a wallet-saving venture at the expense of sanity, but there is a way to do this without spending money. Also, while I call this a sort of "manual defragmentation process", it's a bit of a misnomer. While it is freeing up the blocks at the end of the drive, it is possible (or likely) that this process will seriously fragment your drive. After doing this, it may be worth the investment to buy iDefrag so they can really get your file system in order. But at least this'll get Boot Camp running.
    Regards,
    Tristan
