Imac or powerbook?

Hello neighbors, I am looking forward to buy a new MAC for editing in FCP, I have a budget for about 2,500. I was thinking an imac 20" with a 250GB drive or a Powerbook 15" with a 100GB drive. I also heard that imac frezees to much in pro applications because of all the integrated components on the same monitor. Is this true? I own a Powermac G5 sp/1.8 therefor I want something different. Any opinions? Thanks.

What is true, is that this forum is for people coming in for help. It has been compared to a hospital ward. Many people who never need help never show up on these forums.
Don't let the preponderance of bad reports make you think it is a machine that freezes stiff too often.
So as far as the freezing issue is concerned, in some cases it may be due to the old issue:

Or improperly installed software, hardware, or software not checked for compatibility. For using the pro applications though, just make sure you meet suggested specs, not just minimum specs.
The current Powerbook has less power for many Pro apps, though still quite a capable machine, and able to handle a second display as an extended desktop with more windows. The iMac can't do that without a hack which may or may not work properly. In addition the Powerbook can take Firewire 800 drives which are faster than USB 2, and that's something the iMac can't take. So you have to weigh the two options against each other. I'd seek out the opinion of people also in the forums of the various pro apps and see who might be using it there.

if it's missing from three devices, I imagine that you may need to connect to it via ethernet cable & see if the wireless id is set to be hidden, as well as checking the setup pages to see if wireless is actually operating correctly.
Something like iStumbler or WiFi Scanner should help you determine that too.

IMac or Powerbook for GB8?

Is there a difference in recording quality between an iMac or Powerbook using GB8?
I will be using AKG mics and an M Audio Fast Track Pro along with a Line 6 POD X3.
I assume not but wanted to ask the group and see.

Copy your domain file for your site from your iMac to PowerBook or vice versa. Do you have the same version of iLife on both?

I am planning on recycling an old iMac and Powerbook. However, the display on the iMac is so messed up I can't read anything and the Powerbook is unusable (no power) so what do I do about erasing the hardrives for security?

I've been reading up on how to clean your hard drive so personal information can't be accessed, but if you can't get to your hard drive to clean it up, what are you supposed to do? My town is offering an electronics recycling and I was hoping to drop off my old iMac and Powerbook. I can turn the iMac on, but the display is really bad and almost unreadable. Since both computers have operational problems, I'd suggest removing the hard drives from them. That way, you'll have possession of the drives and their data. Considering their age, I doubt that the recycling program will attempt to repair these computers for donation to needy parties, but if you thought so, you could buy a $15 adapter that would let you connect the bare drive to a USB port on your functioning computer. Once connected, you could erase the drives and reinstall them. You didn't indicate which iMac you have, but if it's a G3 model, this Macworld article has illustrated directions for hardware upgrades, which would show you how to remove the hard drive. If your iMac is a G3 (400 MHz or faster) with the additional VGA port concealed under the plastic door on the rear of its underside, you could connect a VGA display and attempt setting up video mirroring. Once done, you could wipe the drive, while using the connected display to navigate through the procedure. This would eliminate the need to open the bottom of the housing, to access the hard drive for removal. As for the PowerBook, you could post a topic in its specific Forum (depending on the model) and request directions for hard drive removal. Post back as to your preferred option, if you have any questions regarding it.

Insufficient privledges when sharing between iMac and Powerbook

I just upgraded both my powerbook and iMac to Leopard and want to turn on file sharing between the two. The way it used to work with Tiger, I would just click on the drive on my network and it would give me read and write privledges. Now it is saying that I have insufficient privledges. I can get the powerbook to mount the iMac and vice versa but can't seem to do much else.
I am trying to move my iPhoto library from my Powerbook to my iMac.

If you are trying to write directly into the iPhoto Library, note that it is not a regular folder but a package. The permissions on the iPhoto Library package only allow writing by the owner, so another approach is needed, such as those mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198

Sync My Intel Imac and Powerbook

This may have been asked before...however:
I have a Imac intel at home and on the road I use the powerbook. Is there any application that will let me keep both the powerbook HD and the IMAC HD in sync COMPLETELY.
Ie at the end of the day attach the powerbook to the Imac with a firewire cable and the application then looks at changes on both and updates both machines to be in sync....
However sometimes the files on the Imac will have been updated and then Imac then needs to update the files on the powerbook...
Might not be such a application in existence.......Hope I explained it alright.

Out of interest would this work: If I do a complete clone of my Intel Imac onto my Powerbook G4 will this work?
What I mean is there is nothing on the Intel Imac that will not run on the Powerbook application wise because they are universal or powerpc programs?

IMac to Powerbook Network

Hi there,
i have a problem with the network connection between my new imac intel core duo 17" and my powerbook g4 12". I wanted to connect these two to each.They are both connected to my access point and can connect to internet. My iMac has the ip-address: 192.168.1.2 My Powerbook has 192.168.1.6 Both connecting with airport to access point.Actually i can access from my powerbook to my imac but not from my imac to my powerbook. But both can access to a windows system. Do i have to change any settings? I also activated apple talk on both.

The hard drive formatting of the two machines are different. One is designed to be used only with Intel Macs, one is designed to only be used with PowerPC Macs. It already is known that Intel Macs can't boot off a clone made by a PowerPC Mac, though can use the migration assistant from a PowerPC Mac. And Intel Macs can't boot PowerPC Macs. Thus it is not surprising that the network on one side (the older side), can't see the newer side. I'd manage all the files from the Intel side.

Transfering iTunes from iMac to Powerbook

How do I transfer my music from my iMac G4 into my new Powerbook G4?
Can I do this by plugging in firewire cable, "t" at startup and drag my itunes library folder into itunes on the new computer?
I have heard horror stories of people loosing music and wanted to check on the best way to transfer.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network it and the original one and copy over your iTunes folder. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders: Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes recently for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.

Neither is advised by me.
Seriously, the iMac has a single firewire bus and no means to add a second one.
That means your firewire drive, and camera/deck share a single firewire bus, which has presented issues with users.
The PB is a slightly better choice because it is a 15-inch which means it has PC Card slot to add a Cardbus firewire card to create a second firewire bus.
If these are the only alternatives get the 15-inch PB with a cardbus firewire card, and 7200 rpm hitachi in a firewire enclosure.

IMac fast, PowerBook SLOOOOOOW!

Lately, my powerbook's airport connection is either on and off, or slower than dialup, while my iMac G5, which is using the same airport network, keeps it's coonection fine and internet speed is fine. I have an Airport Extreme station connected to my Comcast Internet cable, with an additional Airport Express station in the living room that is supposedly extending the range of the Airport Extreme station. Besides the PowerBook hanging and hanging, the signal strength is all over the place, even though I am feet from the Airport Express station in the living room. I also get that message that the PB is having trouble connecting to the Airport network, and often have to click "try again" several times before it connects. I sometimes also get a message under System Preferences Network that the Airport station has a static IP address????? I have never changed it from "Using DHCP server".

This is the same problem it seems alot of us in this forum are having. Bad airport signals that get dropped or disappear consistently. My PB will connect and then start to drop in a matter of seconds and then finally disappear for a while before doing it all over again. It's so frustrating.
Some people have had luck rebooting their APEX or reinstalling older firmware, you might want to try that. I think it's a bigger problem that we need fixed soon. If anyone can shed light on this problem, please clue us in!

Imac G4, Powerbook G4 and mini mac

I have a imac G4 20" flat panel, and a PowerBook G4 (Just bought it last year,before I knew Apple was coming out with duel core processor from Intel). Anyway, I can't afford to buy a new PowerBook or Imac, so I thought I might be able to purchase a mini mac with the Intel processor, but I don't know if I can connect it to both or either of the two units I already have. Is there a way to use the Mini Mac Intel with what I have now?

Can you explain further what it is you want to accomplish when you "connect to both or either"? File sharing across a network between any or all of your units will be no problem, as would connecting any of the units to any of the others via Firewire Target Disk Mode.
And just FYI, this is the forum for the Intel-based iMacs. You might get more responses, depending on what it is you want to accomplish, in the Mac mini forum or the forums for your iMac G4 or PowerBook.

Migration from imac to powerbook

My new imac is going away for a month or so and I need to transfer my user account to my old G4 powerbook. Any ideas on doing this. I have backed up my user account but how do i add it to the g4 as there's already a user account install when the OS was installed. I need to delete it and replace it with mine from the imac. Both macs have Leopard installed

connect the two computers with FireWire, restart the one you want to migrate from by holding T-key right after the chime. A FW-symbol should appear on the screen, you are in target mode now. The disk of this computer should now appear as external FW-drive on the other Mac.
Now go to folder "Applications">"Utilities" and double click "Migration Assistant.app". Follow the instructions to transfer the user and perhaps some other files and settings.
After this procedure you can select "System Preferences">"Accounts">"Login Options">"Automatically log in as:" NewUser.
If there is enough space on the disk, I'd delete the former user only when I'm sure that everything is fine with the new one, not to end up with a system without functioning user.
If you want to transfer files from the former user to the new one, drag them to the folder "Public", then log in as newUser and get those files from the folder "Users">"formerUser">"Public".

Help needed connecting iMac and PowerBook to Blueyonder cable boradband

I'm not too knowlegeable aboout computers, so please be gentle with me!
I have had broadband supplied by Blueyonder (cable) for some time with no problems.
I have now bought a G4 PowerBook and an Airport Extreme unit and with them to share the internet connection and to share files.
The iMac has no AirPort card so I want to connect that via Ethernet, but the laptop will be wireless.
I have managed (just) to get the network set up so the two computers can share files (so I assume the AirPort unity isn't faulty), but I cannot get either machine to connect to the internet when connected to the AirPort Extreme. I can only connect by plugging the ethernet cable from my modem directly into my iMac.
I used the Airport Setup Assistant on the laptop and ended up with a message saying that I was now connected to the internet wirelessly, but when I launch Safari, I cannot reach the net at all. I then used the AirPort Admin utility on the desktop to try to configure the
I expect anyoen answering this will need more information... but can anyone supply some pointers?
The desktop used OS X.3.9 and the laptop OS X.10.4 though I doubt this makes a difference.

Power down the cable modem.
Wait 30 minutes (go and have a cup of tea or something).
Connect the cable modem to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS).
Switch on the cable modem.
Switch on the AEBS.
Wait five minutes.
Switch on the PowerBook and see if it now works.
If it does, plug the iMac into the LAN port of he AEBS.
Use the Airport Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder to configure the AEBS.

Final Cut Pro Registration from iMac to Powerbook

Hey folks,
Another probably stupid question, but again I come to thee for answers....!
I've got an iMac which I've edited all my work on Final Cut version 5 and have recently purchased a Powerbook where basically I installed FCP from the original disks I used to install it on the iMac.
I registered FCP originally on the iMac, but have not registered it on the Powerbook as I thought this could cause conflicts having the two machines running on the same version.
I'm now planning to sell my iMac to upgrade to a Power Mac. So meantime until I sell all my belongings to purchase one, I would like the Powerbook to be the main machine registered with FCP.
I basically want to clear the iMac completely for sale, so how do I go about having the registered version of FCP on my Powerbook? Should I take off FCP on the Powerbook, then use the Migration Assistant to take over FCP from the iMac? Ive never done this before but have seen on the forums that this is the way to do it via firewire. I'm just wondering though if this causes problems as FCP is obviously registered to the iMac?
Or do I have to call Apple and get them to register FCP with the Powerbook too?
Does any of that make any sense to anyone??? If anyone can follow that riddle, I would be extremely grateful for feedback.

Transferring iMac to Powerbook

Santa was good to me and put a brand new Powerbook G4 under my tree. Yay!
I've been having trouble with transferring my old Mac to my new one. Boo!
The old Mac is an indigo iMac DV running OS 10.2.8 with 2 hard drive partitions, and I haven't had any problems besides an occasional app freeze.
Booted up the Powerbook, followed the instructions on Migration Assistant. The PB got as far as "waiting for disks to appear" and stayed there for about 15 mins before I got the Beachball of Doom. HD 1 showed up in the finder, but HD 2 never appeared. Re-tried entire process several times without success.
Is there something wrong with the old iMac?
I know I could just start up the iMac as a FireWire drive and complete the transfer that way, but I'd rather let the Migration Assistant help me out.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

If, has been suggested, the firmware on your iMac is up to date (which it must be already, or you wouldn't have been able to install any version of OS X on to it...), then you should be able to use Migration Assistant.
If Migration Assistant and your machine aren't able to get along, you can also use MA with a working bootable clone installed on an external FW hard drive.
