  • Questions about TDM mode on an iMac

    Hi!
I'm thinking about buying 2009-2010 27" iMac, it should replace my home server, display and audio system.
Primarily, I will use it in TDM mode, and have some questions about it.
Firstly, what about sound? iMac receives it over Mini DP, right? And if I'll connect HDMI device to iMac (PS3, looking forward to Xbox One, and MacBook Air over hdmi adapter), sound will be played over desktop's speakers, as it should?
Second, and most interesting part: if connection scheme is MacBook Air->Mini DP to HDMI adapter->HDMI cable->HDMI splitter->HDMI to Mini DP cable->iMac in TDM, everything will work fine?
Also interested about cables. For example, this cable http://dx.com/p/cy-dp-021-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-audio-extender-cable-white-1- 8m-177527 supports up to 1920x1200, but basically, both DP 1.2 and HDMI 1.3b supports 2560x1600. Should I look for another cable or this one will support 2560x1440 resolution?)

Beta software is always a risk. Some beta releases are close to finished status and quite polished and bug-free, while others have significant and often crippling bugs. Not that software in official release may not also have problems, but the entire point of beta releases is to identify bugs prior to an official release, so bugs are much more likely. Sometimes you won't encounter any problems, but other beta software may take your machine down completely; it all depends on what the software is intended to do, how skilled the programmers are, and where in the beta cycle the software may be. A "public preview" release from a major developer such as Microsoft, Apple, or Mozilla is less likely to have major problems, but it's no guarantee.
It's always wise to be very cautious about using any beta software, and to take extra precautions, particularly making backups much more often and preferably not using your main computer, when running any beta software. I would recommend never, repeat never, running beta software on any computer on which you depend on a daily basis for work or critical schoolwork. If you must, make a clone of your entire hard drive to another volume before installing any beta, so you can recover your system in case of major problems.

  • Attaching a LCD TV

    Hi
I have an Imac 20" and want to be able to attach it to my TV and use front row to play on the TV.
    The first question is
My TV has a HDMI port (but I want to save that for a PS3 if poss) and A VESA Standard Port. the TV can support 1024 x 768 using this port. What cables do I need to acheive this.
    My second is
Do I drag my movies into itunes and then play them from there in front row? Will the quality be any good or am i better burning a DVD and doing it the old fashioned way.
Oh and finally can you disable the main screen as I dont want to see a video twice
    Thanks

    Hi Andrew
    1. The iMac's video adapter's do not support vesa the options are:
+For DVI displays, use the Apple Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter (M9321G/B).+
+For VGA displays or projectors use the Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Display Adapter (M9320G/A).+
+For televisions, projectors or VCRs that use S-video or composite video connectors, use the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter (M9319G/A).+
Options might be a HDMI switch for both the iMac & PS3 or use the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter (M9319G/A) and a S-Video cable from the iMac to the TV.
    2. With Extended Desktop you can drag any open Application window (iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, DVD player etc...) to the TV's display. When using Mirrored Displays, Frontrow will display on both displays.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303086
    3. The answer to your third questions is no, but a third party App. called Shades can dim either display down to black.

  • Trying to figure out how to get more wired ports

I have an Airport Extreme and since it only has 3 wired ports, I need some addtional wired ports. Directly off the Airport, I have an iMac, PS3 and my VOIP phone. I need additional wired connections for my TV, Directv box and my new Mac Server. I want to be able to see the entire network so that I can share files.
    Any advice??

An ethernet switch will perform better than a hub and it will be only a few dollars more. Ethernet switches come in 5 port, 8 port, 16 port, etc versions.
Since your Extreme has Gigabit ethernet capability, be sure to get a Gigabit switch.
If there's a Best Buy or electronics superstore near you, they will have what you need. $50-60 for a quality Netgear or Cisco 5 Port switch.

  • PhotoStreamAgent and outgoing traffic

    Hi,
Yesterday I have started iPhoto for the first time on my rMBP (Mountain Lion) and tried to use PhotoStream to get the photos from my iPhone. After this first launch iPhoto has quickly became non-responsive and I had to kill and restart it. Eventually I have got my pictures. Later in the evening I have noticed that my laptop was quite hot. Very hot. Like never before. And not very responsive also. I used it for a while and then closed it. This morning I wanted to quickly check a few things and noticed that everything was quite slow and, most importantly, the network speed was pathetic. I did a quick speed test with my internet provider and found that the download speed was very low and the upload speed was almost negative Later today when I got back home I have decided to start investigating. First of all, I found on my router that my outgoing link (DSL) is used at almost 100% constantly. Obviously, in this situation the download speed suffers too as TCP becomes les efficient. Quickly I have found that the source of the traffic is my MBP. And then I have quickly found the suspect - PhotoStreamAgent. It was uploading the data over HTTPS to something.amazonws.com and also to another site (something with "dns" in its name) - also via HTTPS. Non-stop. I have killed it immediately and to verify the origin of this beast tried to start iPhoto. Yes, that was it - iPhoto starts this agent and it immediately starts uploading something like crazy making my network almost unusable. Had to kill it again. Considering the spees it has uploaded over 1Gb of data since yesterday. I have about 3Gb of photos and videos in total but they have been _downloaded_ from my iPhone to my Mac.
I am puzzled....right not I find iPhoto unusable and consider disabling PhotoStream for good.

Just come across this as I have same problem.
Got a macbook pro, imac, ps3, smart tv and multiple ios devices. Had to disable access to each of the devices and narrowed it down to my iMac. Ran rubbernet on that and photostreamagent was uploading at 300kb/s. No new photos added so god knows what it was sending.
I quit it in activity monitor but this is just a quick fix. Did you find a permenent one?

  • How to connect my ps3 via thunderbolt to my imac 27'late 2012?

I have a new imac an old ps3 and will buy the new ps4 once available.
Is anyone aware comcerning a solution to connect these devices?
I need a solution video in (thunderbolt) to video out (hdmi) would prefer of course if sound would go the same way.
    Thanks

You would need a display port to HDMI adapter. One of the newer features (which the 2012 iMac has) is that it can display this type of content like a DVD player to the iMac.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY600VC/A/griffin-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-wit h-audio-dvi
Use the above link to review that item. It also has a DVI adapter that you would not use. But the display port to HDMI is the correct item. Then you connect the PS3 to the hdmi on it. I don't think it would passthrough audio though so you would have to figure something out for sound.

  • How to connect my PS3 to my iMac (Late 2012)

Hello every one, I have a question. Can I connect my PS3 to my late 2012 iMac with 27 inch over HDMI?
I looked in the internet but I only found such Adapters, for the older iMac's.
If I can do this, please let me know what I need and where I could get this Adapter or Device.
    Thank You.

  • Connecting a PS3 or Xbox to iMac

The display on the 24" iMac is essentially equivalent to an HDTV. Is there a way to connect a PS3 or Xbox 360 to my iMac? I am a new switcher from the world of PC's, so I am totally clueless when it comes to this stuff. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Guy's
EyeTV Hybrid also comes with a break-out cable for composite video and S-Video, enabling you to connect a set-top box for premium channels, digital cable or satellite.

  • Can't get PS3 controller to work on iMac with Lion with Call of Duty 4.

I was able to pair my PS3 controller with my iMac, running Lion, but it will not do anything.  I am trying to use it with Call of Duty 4.  My bluetooth says it is connected to the controller.  I really don't have any other games to try it on to see if it is a game compatability issue.  Is this a known problem?  How do I make it work?

There's one more way that the previously-existing Oracle directories on the other machines might be tripping you up - with registry settings. In particular, the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\(some home)NLS_LANG registry key may be associated with the "invalid or unknown NLS parameter value specified" error you're getting.
Of course, the Instant Client isn't supposed to have to mess with the registry, so that makes me suspicious. And I got Instant Client SQL*PLUS on a clean XP machine to work without setting an ORACLE_HOME. All this makes me suspicious that some stuff from outside your Instant Client is being run. I know you said you cleaned your environment variables, but double-check that the other Oracle directories are out of your PATH.
If you have permission to, you might want to thoroughly scrub the old Oracles from the other machines (starting with running the Oracle Installer, then hand-cleaning the registry, the c:\Ora92 or whatever directory, and then c:\Program Files\Oracle). If you have MetaLink, Document 74790.1 is a dated but good guide to cleanly de-installing an old Oracle installation from Windows. It's much more difficult than it ought to be; sometimes it feels like an Oracle home is never truly gone. If you can't do that, perhaps save a copy of your registry and then temporarily rename HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE to ORACLE_HIDDEN, or something - something to keep any existing registry settings from distracting your Instant Client.
    Good luck!

  • Using iMac 21.5" 2009 model as a monitor for PS3

    Hello Apple people,
    I have a new iMac 21.5" released Oct 2009.
The thing is, I want to use the iMac as a monitor for my PS3 (while the wife uses the HD TV).
I know there are devices for the 27" iMac, but does anyone know of any devices/software that would allow me to do this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Kieran

Fortuny answered your question. No, there is no such device for the 21.5" iMacs. They do not have any sort of video in-port.
The only method for getting video into most Macs is with some sort of FireWire or USB device. I have not heard of such a device for using a Mac's display with 3rd party video devices such a SPS3, Xbox, etc.

  • Imac 24" with wii and ps3

I'm looking at getting the new 24" imac.
    Questions:
    1. is it possible to run a wii and ps3 through the imac without additional hardware?
    2. If not, is it best to use a hd scaler like the gefen hd mate scaler to connect the devices to the imac or are there alternatives?
    3. will the imac display give good reproduction of HD media (ie blu ray through the ps3)?
I'm aware of the elgato eyetv solution but want to avoid the tv route to avoid paying the tv licence fee (don't have a tv or any real desire to get one if I can otherwise spend the licensing fee on a better specced machine).
    Cheers
    Denning

    Hello,
There is no video input on the iMac. I've never seen anything but Standard Defintion video input devices via USB/Firewire (the HD input devices are PCI cards), they are also generally more expensive than the Elgato TV Tuners. I would have said that the cost of an ADC to give you the video-in is a significant chunk out of a getting a seperate HD TV, but then you don't want to have a tuner in the house because you'd have trouble convincing the TV license people it's not in use.
So my wild card answer is take a look at a 24" display with HDMI and DVI. You can connect it to the iMac via DVI as a second display and it's HDMI in port will allow you to play the PS3 on it:
Example (This is a TN panel hence the price. The S-IPS version is somewhat more.)

  • Using new 24" iMac with my PS3

Ok, my vizio was dropped - nuff said.
So, I want to you my PS3 in conjunction with the screen on the iMac, is this possible? I will not actually be using the computer's hard drive or ram or anything like that...just the screen. Do I need specific cables or what? Thanks in advance.

Check out www.elgato.com. I believe they make a product for this purpose.

  • Ps3 to imac 21,5

I want to use my imac screen for ps3. I have an "belkin mini displayport to hdmi converter".
I searched on the internet and found out I had to do something with command + f2 or something but i doesn't work.
Is it possible to do this and how?
I think the converter I have is only working in one direction because i can play movies with my imac and watch it on tv.
Can somebody explain me if it is possible to do this and how and why command f3 is not working???

Not successfully if you are attempting Target Display Mode.
