IMac video broken

Blank and white lines on screen after boot up of 2008, 24 inch iMAC.  Tried removing power plug for >15 secs and rebooted, no improvement. Did get normal desktop after vacuuming vent and resetting SMC.  Screen gets "fuzzy" after about three minutes of running.  Also tried to reboot with no devices connected, but this did not help.  Would like to know what the root cause is most likely to be. If anyone has an idea please let me know, thank you.

Read in your owners manual about how to run Apple Hardware Test, run it in Extended Mode. If no errors appear after the first pass (30-60 minutes) then run it another 2-3 times. If you get an error, the next stop is an Apple Store or AASP for repair.

  • Trying to wipe the hard drive on a G5 iMac, using an external DVD drive as the one in the iMac is broken.

I'm trying to boot up with the OS (or install) disk, from an external DVD drive as the one in the iMac is broken. When the computer boots up, my normal desktop appears, but also the Mac OSX (Tiger) install disk. When I double-click on the "Install Mac OSX" icon, a screen comes up that says: "Click the button below to restart & begin the install process". The iMac restarts, but just goes back to where it was, & I'm prompted to:  "Click the button below to restart & begin the install process".
So far there is no way to "begin the install process", I just keep going around in circles with this. I'm doing this so I can sell the computer. I hope I've made it clear, and TIA for any advice.

I looked at the disk utility erase option.  The wording looked a little vague.  Seemed to me to erase all the disk  including the data if you pick one pass, but I am not sure.
but that is contradicted when you see you have to pick the correct option.

When I booted up my iMac this morning, I got the usual apple logo, then the spinner appeared beneath it and then this showed up:
I tried to reboot it a few times with lond pauses in-between and it keeps happening.
To me it looks like the GPU is fried. Any other ideas?

I think I managed to get into Safe Mode but it does not look good:

  • IMac with broken screen

    hi guys,
my friend has an iMac 24" with a broken screen. is it possible to connect this to a normal monitor and use the iMac like a desktop computer?
    thanks!

There is a Mini-DVI output port with support for DVI, VGA, S-video, and composite video connections via adapter on the back to connect a second display. You would just need the correct cable and to set the second display to mirror the primary display.
The damage isn't covered under warranty?

  • IMac video through AV amp to Plasma?

Hi folks, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on the following problem I'm having.
First of all the kit I'm using:
Intel Core Duo 2 iMac (17 inch),
    Denon AVR-1906 AV Receiver,
    Panasonic PWD8 42' Plasma,
Apple mini DVI to VGA adapter,
    VGA to Component Video Lead.
I'm trying to connect my iMac to the Denon AV amplifier to feed the video signal out of the iMac via the mini DVI to VGA to the component-in on my AV receiver then to my plasma.
So far I'm drawing blanks as when I connect the mini DVI to VGA adapter to my iMac, the iMac isnt seeing a display as connected (even though its connected at the other end to my AV receiver which is on and connected to my plasma).
Anyone know if this works or should I just remove the AV amp from the connection and go straight from the iMac to the plasma (which I know works)?
    Thanks!

Thanks for that, that makes sense, the more I think about them ore I think its not going to work.
As the VGA cable connected to the iMac (via DVI) is using only 3 of the D sub pins (one for red, green and blue) there's no way of the iMac detecting that there is a display connected.
Unless of course I can 'fool' the iMac into thinking something is connected, maybe at a software level. is this possible?

  • Help with installing OSX Lion on iMac with broken display

    Hi,
Having some trouble installing OSX Lion on my 5 year old iMac which has a broken display.
The display has been dead for a couple of years now and I've been using an external monitor without any problems. Today I decided to upgrade to Lion - I downloaded the installer from the App Store and started the install which rebooted the machine. After reboot I'm presented with a grey 'thatched' background image on the external display and nothing else, no menu bar, installation menu etc.
I presume the internal display is showing the menu I need but I can't see it as that screen is broken. Is there a way to turn on mirroring during the install process so I can use my external display? I've tried various shortcuts held down during startup - OPTION-F14, CMD-F1, CMD-F2 - but none have worked.
If this isn't possible, is there a way to abort the Lion install process and go back to using my Snow Leopard install? Whenever I boot the machine I am taken to the OS X Lion installer and don't know how to get back to my Snow Leopard install. I tried holding down OPTION key on startup to choose the list of available OS installs, but again, the internal display is being used so I can't see what to do.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Genius idea, thank you. Was able to step through the install procedure using voiceover and the screenshots on this page http://www.macstories.net/mac/os-x-lion-installation-guide-boot-discs-and-qa/
Definitely a first for me, installing an OS with voice only

  • Installing OSX on 24" iMac with broken Display

    Hi,
I have a 24" iMac but the Screen is broken. It still worked with a external Display connected via MiniDVI but now i would like to install OSX 10.6. The problem is that I can't get the Installation to show on the external Display and I can't see what I'm (supposed to be) doing on the iMac's screen. With the DVD inserted it boots up like this (I can't even get the DVD out now):
Is there a working Shortcut (I tried cmd+F7 and cmd+F1) or other way to install without the main screen or is there at least a way to retrieve the DVD?

If you had another Mac you could do a remote install to the iMac 24".

  • IMac Video Card in 20" and 24"

    Hello,
I want to thank everyone in advance for posting here.
I am deciding between the 24" and 20" iMac but will be doing the video card upgrade regardless of which system I buy.
Can anyone tell me the difference between the upgrade options (nvidia geforce 1600 gt in the 24" and the ATI Radeon X1600?
My primary applications of use are Final Cut Pro 5, DVD Studio Pro 4, and Adobe Photoshop CS2. I don't care about render time, except for in Photoshop.
If anyone can help...please do. I recognize they both have the same VRAM, but if there wasn't a difference, they wouldn't be different upgrade options.
    Thanks

Actually, if you look at the specs at the online Apple store, you will see that the 20" offers the x1600 with a choice of 128 or 256MB of video ram. The 24" offers the Nividea 7300 w/128MB or the 7600 with 256. IF you are going to be doing video editing and photography, I would get the upgraded model no matter what system you get. Though it may be theoretically possible, it will be very impractible to upgrade the card later. You will need the ram, especially if you want to play any games,or get into Aperature for photo management and processing as well as CS2 also, I think it would also impact video editing as well.
BTW, the 24" screen is great.

  • So which 27" iMac Video card to go with???

    Hey gang-
Lucky me- my wife said that I've been good enough to ask for a new iMac this Christmas!   I'll be replacing my trusty old Mid-2007 24" with one of the new Late-2013 27" models.   To my surprise, it seems my go-to source for reviews- MacWorld magazine- has yet to publish any print review of the Late-2013 models- so I'm guessing they aren't going to.
I know I'll be going with a Fusion Drive upgrade, but where I'm stuck is on the Video card.  Thoughts on the NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M/1GB, or the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M/2GB, or the mac-daddy NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M/4GB?
I've seen a few threads with new owners of Late-2013 iMacs already enquiring about upgrading their video cards, so don't want to underbuy.
Any thoughts or maybe anyone found a good review since MacWorld hasn't?
    Thanks!
    Dave

What are you going to use your new iMac for?
That will determine what CPU and video card you need.

  • IMac Video Card Replacement

Is there anyway to get the video card replaced in my iMac? Apple Care has expired and they replaced it just last year before it was over but it appears to have gone out again. I have a 24" Intel iMac which I purchased in Feb of 2010. I read online that it is not possible to replace myself because its sealed in but I recall when Apple replaced it last year the Genius telling me they just pop it out and replace but maybe I misunderstood.
I'm not sure why it has gone out again we barely use it as I mostly use my MacBook. However, the MacBook also seems to be having issues with its video card.

You will need to take it in for repair. You don't even know that the GPU has gone bad. It could be something else. If you attempt to repair it yourself, then Apple will no longer provide any future support whatsoever. Let them do the repair for you.

  • Question from XP user in market for iMac (Video input)

I would like to buy a Apple desktop for my home. I would like to know what my options are if I want to connect Surround Sound, HD DVD player, external hard drive, Xbox 360, and Digital Cable to the screen. I would like to know if that is possible, if it has inputs and things of that nature. Both my living room TV and Windows HP Desktop are outdated and I would like to knock out 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. Is it possible? And if so, which model(s).
Thank you, all comments would be GREATLY appreciated, I'm not very computer savvy. Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Unfortunately no iMac offers any kind of video input out of the box. There are Firewire and USB2.0 video-input devices which are good value but probably won't offer the kind of spec/quality that you will want to input HD DVDs for example.
Here's an example (link). There are HD tuners available too.
BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s back in January of 2006. The current iMacs are termed "Intel iMacs".
    kind regards
