Image cache managment

Just tought i would add this, sorry if its a duplicate,
*have the ability to purge/create previews for a folder/collection.
*and or standard size preview expiry.
*Some indicator next to the folder/collection that previews don't exists.
I know 1:1 previews are supposed to expire, but this does leave lots of smaller previews left floating around ( and they all add up when your talking thousands), specificaly for me, that leaves lots of disk space used up for previews of photos that i probably won't look at for a long time, and would happily wait for them to be built when needed.

> * Some indicator next to the folder/collection that previews don't exists.
Yes, please, some way to determine which previews don't exist, and when
previews are being generated, please indicate how many are yet to be
generated.
Best,
Christopher

  • Image cache not working with Firefox and apex

    Hi,
    I'd like to cache all my images to save page rendering time and bandwidth because my images are all static and never change.
    I use the John Scott's caching technique Link: [http://jes.blogs.shellprompt.net/2007/05/18/apex-delivering-pages-in-3-seconds-or-less/], in a few words this technique consists of adding a header line "Expires: date in the future" in the http response.
    It works very well in IE, the images are cached and the same image can be accessed several times (within the same session or in different sessions) without issuing an http request to the server each time.
    with Firefox it does not work, the same image is asked again and again to the server (i'm using FF 3.5 and APEX 3.2).
    - Is it a date format problem? no, because when i type about:cache in FF, i can find my image in the cache with an expire date in the future.
    The weird thing here is that the counter is incremented each time u request the image, so FF knows it is in the cache and even if the expire date is in the future, FF asks it again to the server.
    - Is it a FF bug? If u read the http specs or if u google a little, u can come to the conclusion that FF does not follow the standards,
    but... images.google.com for example manages to get its images cached with FF.
    They use an http response header "cache-control: public, max-age=604800".
    I tried the same and all kinds of combinations but without success.
    When i compare my image with the one from google in the FF cache, they both have the same attributes.
    - It's not an apex issue neither because it works with IE, most probably an incompatibility between apex and FF?
    Maybe the use of cookie? or the http request (not the response) containing "cache-control: max-age=0"?
    I've found so far 2 half solutions:
    1) use ETag and modified date, see the Tyler Muth's note Link: [http://tylermuth.wordpress.com/2008/02/04/image-caching-in-plsql-applications/].
    with this technique FF continues to send request each time but the answer is shorter because it's just a "304 not modified" instead of "200 OK" (200 response is bigger as it contains the image).
    it's better than nothing but you still have 1 request + 1 response for nothing.
    Another problem is that you need SYS access to implement this, which is not possible on an hosted server. (note that for images from the file system it is already foreseen by apex 3.1, Tyler's note is for images from the db)
    2) if you preload the image (using myimage=new Image();myimage.src='...';), then there is max 1 request per browser session.
    There are 2 minor issues here:
    - no caching across sessions
    - if u don't want to preload all the images (example a page with lots of thumbnails, when user clicks it show a bigger image, in that case the thumbnails can be preloaded but overkill for the big images), then you need to load the image, wait until the image has loaded before displaying it, it does not slow down the execution, but requires some extra JS.
    I'm not asking anyone to investigate it, i can live with the 2 workarounds,
    but just in case someone encountered the same problem and already fixed it.
    Let me know if u managed to use the John Scott's technique with Firefox. (U can use Firebug to see the http traffic)
    Thx
    Tim

  • Bridge cache management still weak in CS4 (trial version)

    I've been running the trial version of Photoshop 11 (CS4) and Bridge 3.0.0.464 for a little over 24 hours.
    Though Bridge 3.x (CS4) runs
    much faster than 2.x (CS3) on my Mac, cache management is already a big disappointment (again). I find myself having to purge the cache
    for practically each and every folder, as at least one of the four info lines under each thumbnail fails to populate, usually the first line, "Date Created". On a few ".pct" images (Apple PICT), the Dimensions (in pixels) line refuses to populate even after repeated purging of the cache for the folder.
    What remains to be seen is whether ACR 5.2 is enough incentive to upgrade or not. Bridge 3.x falls a little short, the flashy effects in Photoshop are not enough by themselves.

    Ann,
    >I have absolutely NO desire to inflict unnecessary pain on myself intentionally.
    That's most commendable. :) Trust me, pain and grief is exactly what you would have.
    Here's another way I can confirm the bug:
    First I manually delete the cache folders, then do a global purge on startup (by holding the option key and checking the box in the dialog box). The "Date Created" info line is blank (data missing).
    Then I Build and Export Cache through the Tools menu. That fixes the missing data in the info line.
    Presumably, I now have a healthy cache.
    If I again purge the cache globally, through preferences or at startup, the "Date Created" info line goes blank instantly under ALL my thumbnails on all volumes connected at the time.
    Then I again Build and Export Cache through the Tools menu. That fixes the missing data in the info line under all thumbnails.
    To me, that is unmistakably a bug.

  • Feature Request (again); Adobe Bridge Cache Manager

    In Adobe Bridge, the Cache is still a problem and a huge memory hog. I asked for a good Cache Manager over 3 years ago when it was needed CS4.
    Now in CS6, I am disappointed that the cache system in Bridge has not changed. Why do you have a section in the Adobe Forums that asks for 'Feature Request' and then ignore them?
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2652688#2652688
    "I would personally like a tool within Bridge that allows me to manage and control the Cache in a more personal and effective way. I would like a toggle that would keep '100% previews' in one folder for a selected period of time (1 day to 1 month) before the folder's cache is automatically purged. And another toggle that would give me the option to keep a selected folder's cache permanently intact (such as an Important Portfolio Folder or an Edited Images Folder).
    As a photographer, I take and edit a lot of photos. When I import a photoshoot with 1,500 photos (not uncommom at all) I enjoy having the Bridge Previews at 100%, but for only a limited time. Unfortunately, I forget to purge the individual cache of that folder and the cache builds to a point that makes Adobe Bridge CS4 very slow. I then have to Purge the whole Bridge Cache in order to make Bridge run smooth again.

    gumbogood wrote:
    A Cache Manager tool that lets me either schedule a cache cleaning on a folder, or keep it permanent, would be a huge help. And I don't think that it is unreasonable for me to ask this of Adobe.
    If you submit a feedback poll where Yammer pointed you, and it gets a couple of hundred (thousand?) users agree you might get Adobe's attention.
    I agree with Yammer that Bridge is a low priority project with Adobe.  Think their target audience is the casual user with a few hundred photos added each year.   Your use pattern is more specialized and you either have to adapt with scripts or move to another product IMO.
    The size of cache takes a lot of people by surprise.  It can grow humongous if you use HQ thumbs and save 100% previews.  One can dump the cache in preferences, but many are reluctant to to this as they think it will delete all their keywords and edits.  In addition, to do a search you have to re-index all your files, which can take a long time.
    If you have "export cache to folders" checked, dumping the cache in preferences only dumps the central cache.  To dump the folder cache you have to visit each folder and click on Tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.  Again, most people do not recognize this.  This technique purges both the central and folder cache for this folder only.
    It the 100% previews are the problem for you it would seem like a simple task for the script people to write one that would delete it after xx days as the 100% previews are held in a specific folder.
    Bridge is not a good digital asset manager.  You are probably in that arena dealing with several hundred thousand images.  Omke uses a DAM as it does some functions better than Bridge, but Bridge is still his main program.  Can't remember the name, but if you read these posts you might have seen it.

  • Image Caching

    Hi
    I'm trying to implement Image Caching on an Oracle XE database following Tyler Muth's blog post http://tylermuth.wordpress.com/tag/oracle-plsql-images-caching/
    Has anyone managed to implement this successfully?
    I've run the following as sys :
    begin
    DBMS_EPG.SET_DAD_ATTRIBUTE (
       dad_name    => 'APEX',
       attr_name   => 'cgi-environment-list',
       attr_value  => 'HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH');
    DBMS_EPG.SET_DAD_ATTRIBUTE (
       dad_name    => 'APEX',
       attr_name   => 'cgi-environment-list',
       attr_value  => 'IF_MODIFIED_SINCE');
    end;
    /And my function to download the images includes the following:
        v_etag_head := owa_util.get_cgi_env('HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH');
        v_etag_str := lpad(p_file_id,2,0)||to_char(v_date_last_modified,'DDMMYYYYHH24MISS');
        if v_etag_head = v_etag_str then
          owa_util.status_line(
          NSTATUS         => 304,
          CREASON         => 'Not Modified',
          BCLOSE_HEADER   => true);
          return;
        else
          owa_util.mime_header(v_mimetype, FALSE );
          htp.p('Date: ' ||to_char(sysdate,'Dy, DD Mon RRRR hh24:mi:ss')||' GMT');
          htp.p('Content-length: '||v_file_length);
          htp.p('Content-Disposition: inline; filename="'||v_filename||'"');
          htp.p('Last-Modified: '||to_char(v_date_last_modified,'Dy, DD Mon RRRR hh24:mi:ss')||' GMT');
          htp.p('ETag: '||v_etag_str);
          htp.p('Expires: ' ||to_char(sysdate+(1/12),'Dy, DD Mon RRRR hh24:mi:ss')||' GMT');
          htp.p('Cache-Control: max-age=300');
          owa_util.http_header_close;
          wpg_docload.download_file(v_blob);
       end if;However, owa_util.get_cgi_env('HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH') always returns null. I've checked using LiveHTTPHeaders and the If-None-Modified is being sent. This is running on a local Oracle XE database (using the EPG), running APEX 4.0.0.00.46 and Windows 7.
    I've searched the forum and there are four other posts that refer to HTTP_IF_NONE_MATCH, however these haven't helped. If anyone has any ideas or needs any more information, please let me know. And if you have got this working I'd love to know how, even just so I know it's possible!!
    Thanks for any help.
    Sara

    Bump.
    Has anyone managed to implement this successfully? Is there anything I can check? Or is this a bug with the EPG?
    This is causing us massive problems and I can't see what I've done wrong. Any help is really appreciated.
    Thanks
    Sara

    Yes, you're right.
    To solve (until a next release) I done:
    pacman -Rcd gtk2
    pacman -A /var/cache/pacman/pkg/gtk2-2.4.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
    And avoid to do pacman -Su ...
    Thanks and bye.

  • Cache Management System

    Bridge
    definitely needs a cache management system whereby a user can, via whatever means, clean out old cache data. I process hundreds of thousands of images per year, constantly deleting files, archiving them to CD, etc. Remnants of those activities are left in the centralized cache and old references need to be cleaned out. Sometimes it's obvious as to which cache data belons to what, other times not.
    I'm currently sitting on top of 2.5 gig of obsolete cache data that needs to be cleaned up. So whether it's a UI or a more logical naming convention of info in the cache folder, we need to be able to manage it.
    Peace,
    Tony

    And as long as I'm at it, how about a function/button/technique to "Stop creating thumbs temporarily". In ACDSee, you can stop thumb generation in browser mode by double clicking on the progress bar. In PS7's file browser, you could do it by pressing escape during the building of the cache. Sure would be nice not to have your machine choke while it does it's business, and just grab the file(s) you want.

  • Image Caching With JList

    Hi all, I need to know, how can I implement an Image Cache feature with a JList that is effective, ie. basic I would like the images to be stored in memory when the list is visible (done that already using a WeakHashMap<String, Icon>) and removed from memory when the JList is not displayed.
    Currently I use the following code section, to try and remove the data from memory, seems not work according to task manager. Sorry I cannot seem to come up with a good SSCCE since I'm not exactly sure how to make an example that loads images. Any suggestion with that?
    WeakHashMap<String,Icon> icons = new WeakHashMap<String,Icon>();
    JList list = new JList(); // something like this in actual code
    public void startClearTimer() {
        new javax.swing.Timer( 30000, new ActionListener() {
            public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                if(!list.isShowing() && icons.size() > 0 ) {
                    resetIconCache();
                    System.out.println("Icons Cleared");
                    System.gc();
                    //((javax.swing.Timer)e.getSource()).stop();
        }).start();
    public void resetIconCache() {
        if(icons == null) {
            return;
        Iterator<Icon> images = icons.values().iterator();
        while(images.hasNext()) {
            ImageIcon icon = (ImageIcon)images.next();
            icon.getImage().flush(); // smoke but no cigar
            icon = null;
        icons.clear();
        icons = new WeakHashMap<String,Icon>();
    }This code is used in a ListCellRenderer, which loads the images, scales them, caches them in memory so the repaints are faster and displays them along side some JLabels.
    So basically how can I load the images in memory and release the resources used when the images are not required?
    ICE

    you can't be cleverer than JVM for memory usage.
    Of course you can, because the point of caching is that it requires (or at the very least is optimised by) some understanding of the use case. JVMs are somewhat unlikely to predict how any given set of users will use any given application, nor are they capable of factoring in the cost of downloading (or otherwise obtaining) data which has been freed from memory. To a JVM, a lump of voidable memory is no different to any other.
    Take an example of an applet (which is limited to 96Mb of heap) which browses images on a server. Let's say it's looking at images which occupy 20Mb of memory each (far from unreasonable) in memory. They might each be 1Mb or so in compressed file size, which is an appreciable delay in download time.
    Each time the user switches between images, the applet will probably want to implement a policy that says "that last image should be kept in memory if possible, since the user might return to it and they won't want another long delay to load it, but if you run out of memory downloading the next image, feel free to discard the first, because the next is more important." (Furthermore, your workflow might permit you to prioritise images.)
    In order to indicate to the JVM that the first image is disposable, you must clear all strong references to it. However, this simply makes it eligible for garbage collection: simple as that. You have no control over whether the garbage collector will clean that image data (which takes several seconds to retrieve) or a bunch of other data which is completely useless or can be recreated in milliseconds. Also note that in practice, weak and soft references do not actually encourage the GC to retain the data: it is cleared long before the memory is actually required.
    Note, too, that the suggestion of tweaking the heap allocation is no use for an applet (unless you have a very small, very knowledgeable and very tolerant user base).

  • Bridge cache managment & export to folders?

    What is the function and advantage of "auto exporting cache to folders" in Bridge?
    Round 2 testing, I changed the CS6 Bridge cache location to be the same location I was using for CS5, on a secondary drive.
    Small mistake, because CS6 proceeded to delete the entire existing cache and start building a new one. However, Bridge CS5 seems to coexist OK sharing the same cache with CS6. They are both re-building the cache as I visit individual folders. (30,000 files in 800 folders gonna take a while).
    Long ago under CS3 I adopted the strategy of setting Bridge to "Auto export cache to folders." That worked well, because if you purged the master cache, Bridge would very quickly rebuild it from the folder cache files each time you re-visited a folder. The thumbs would come up very quickly if a folder cache existed, much slower if no folder cache existed.
    Under CS5, and now CS6, that is no longer true. If you visit a folder after the cache has been purged, a slow process to generate thumbnails occurs. It appears that the individual folder cache is not being used for anything. The time to re-build the cache is about the same, regardless of whether folder cache files exist or not.
    Purging or deleting the Bridge cache was often necessary under CS3 because the cache often became corrupted. CS5 was more stable, but still not immune from cache corruption. Maybe CS6 will be even more stable, but I'm betting cache purges will still be sometimes necessary. Is there any way to make the rebuild faster? Or more generally, what's the best strategy for Bridge cache management?
    (And no, I don't have "keep 100% previews in cache" selected.)

    What is the function and advantage of the Bridge Forum?

    Vijay,
    IPM is not certified to be installed on Windows XP (as for IPM services).
    It is possible to install IPM on one server machine (or two, if you need Web). First, you have to decide, which services you have to install.

  • How to use Cache Management Library (CML) for custom applications?

    Hello,
    We are planning the migration of multiple applications (J2EE, Portal, Web-Dynpro for Java) from 7.01 to 7.3 and we would like to replace some custom cache implementations with a central cache management provided by the SAP Web-AS Java.
    Several SAP standard services (e.g. UME, Configuration Manager, Scheduler) seems to use the "Cache Management Library" (CML):
    [http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/4a/f833eb306628d2e10000000a42189b/frameset.htm]
    Such caches can be monitored using SAP Management Console (AS Java Caches).
    Portal Runtime (cache_type=CML) and Web Page Composer can also be configured to use CML:

    So our questions:
    How to use CML for custom applications?
    Is there any example or documentation available?
    Kind Regards,

  • Messages Opening Image Cache Folder when Sending Files

    Messages / iChat seems to be opening my image cache folder every time I send an image to my contacts the image cache folder opens in Finder and stays open with the copied image. Is there a way to get rid of this? It's really annoying. It started happening after I updated to Mavericks.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    I don't have an answer for this one.
    Are you finding those items are zipped before Sending ?
    Where are they from?
    I get them zipped when sending a pic dragged from a Browser or from iPhoto but not from the Desktop or a Finder window.

    I urgently need to disable the image cache in Mail 7. How can I do that?
    Reason: I regularly get mails with image files that are essential parts of customer orders. The image content is different in each mail, but the filename is the same.
    Mail 7 displays the same image in every mail until I restart it, it obviously displays a cached file instead of the original image.
    Where is the Mail-cache-file? Can I writeprotect it?
