Image File Size is insane

Assuming a photo is 400 KiloBytes (some are bigger), which is 3200 Kilobits (quite a lot for a 500 * 500 pixel image for the web)
This creates a some problems….
1. Effectively excludes dialup users from viewing any of these sites and reduces the experience for most broadband users.
If a dialup user wanted to view a slide show on a 56kb/s connection it would take 57 seconds just to load each image. Even on a broadband connection of 500kb/s it would take 6.4 seconds to load each photo in a slide show. The javascript that controls the pace of the slideshow is
me.playHandler = setInterval(me.doTransition, 5000);
This code forces the image to change every 5 seconds. To load the image in, lets say 3 seconds, we need a connection speed of 3200Kb / 3s = 1066 Kb/s. By the time the photo loads we have only 2 seconds to enjoy it before the slideshow clears it and attempts to load the next photo. A lot of you might be think "but I have a T1 connection" well, a connection is only as fast as its weakest link and in the case of serving pages from .mac's server, we can all agree that the performance is not that impressive…and we are paying a lot of money for that performance.
2. 10 GB monthly bandwidth limit will be reached very quickly. If every visitor to your website viewed 30 pics per visit (12 MegaBytes) then you would reach your bandwidth limit in 833 visits per month or 27 visits per day. This of coarse does not include videos, iSync, email, backup, podcasting, etc. That's a lot of hits for most people but for some its not. And considering that we are paying for the service it would be nice if the service provider of the bandwidth wasn't forcing us to use it so inefficiently. Apple brags about there h.264 compression for video...well what about all the great compression for images that has been around for a decade, why can't we use that now.
3. Publishing takes a lot longer. The first month everyone gets there hands on iWeb they will likely be converting all their albums from Homepage. Add up the bandwidth to publish 20 albums and you’ll be using up your 10 GB pretty darn quick. I have added 15 albums and made a few layout changes, etc, etc. I logged onto .mac to check out my bandwidth this month and it is 4 times what it was the previous few months and the current month is only half over.
I hope this gets resolved soon or at least update iPhoto to bring back Homepage. Apple is supposed to be about simplicity. Homepage was great and more than enough for a lot of users. I want to use iWeb but I’m sure a lot of people would prefer to stay with Homepage but will be very upset when they load iPhoto and see the missing option.
Thanks for listening…

In what format are your scanned images? If they are in jpg, that is a compressed storage format. A 2350x3525 pixels image, for instance, might compress down to 4 MB, but it would be 25 MB when opened into memory.
What are the pixel dimensions of your scans?

  • How to reduce image file size in spreadsheet

I have created a spreadsheet that contains cells with small amounts of text, and images that I brought in from the Media Browser from iPhoto. This has caused the file size to become HUGE, on the order of 234 MB. Saving it as a pdf only reduces it to 220 MB.
I have tried the Format>Image>Reduce Image File Size, as well as File>Reduce File Size, but in both cases, those options are grayed out.
What am I doing wrong? All I really want is thumbnail versions of my image files.
I don't understand what the Reduce Image File Size command would be used for, if it doesn't work for this?

When you insert a picture in a cell, it's used as a background.
To do that, the app keep it in a size allowing it to accomodate the larger cell size permitted.
If you want to get small images matching the cell size which you use, you must reduce the picture by yourself before inserting it. For instance, cells are often 72 * 16 pixels ones so you may reduce your pictures so that thir width become 72 pixels.
Of course, if the user enlarge the cell, the picture will become highly pixelated.
    Look at this example.
    In B4 is the original : 202 x 177 pixels
    In C3 is the reduced one : 72 x 63
in B2 is the reduced one in a 202 x 177 pixels cell. It's awfully pixelized
We must arbitrate between size and quality.

  • What is image dpi after "Reduce Image File Size"

Does anyone know the resulting image dpi after using the "Reduce Image File Size" command in pages? My mother is trying to prepare some things for pre-press, and can't send her document to the printing press, because the pages docs are friggin huge! I'm trying to give her the easiest option for resizing all of the many images in the document, but don't know if this is a viable option if the end product needs to be printed. I need the output to be at least 300dpi.

As fruhulda wrote, asking Pages to apply changes to the pictures isn't the good path.
In fact, it's a perfect way to get a fat file.
    My practice is :
Prepare the document in Pages to define the wanted size of every embedded pictures.
Edit the picture files in a tool dedicated to this task so that the resulting files will be 300 dpis ones for the wanted sizes.
Then, replace the original pictures by the definitive ones.
In most cases, the file will be lighter than the original one and you will have the 300 dpis resolution (except if you apply shadows but it's an other story).

  • Maximum Image file size flash can handle?

Does anyone knows the max image file size flash can load
    using MovieClipLoader?
I tried 10.5 MB PNG file and Flash thinks it is loaded but,
the actual image never shows up.
    Thanks,

Well it is good for that client. But it still won't work in
Flash. Sorry. You will need to slice the picture into different
chunks at 2880 x 2880 max and reassemble the tiles in Flash.
You may also run into an issue that things sometimes get lost
if there is more that 16,000 (or thereabouts) pixels difference in
    their coordinates.

  • Where is the image file size???

Where is the image file size in LR3? I can't see it anywhere neither in the Library module, nor in the Develop module.

As far as I know Lightroom does not display the file size. Keep in mind that LR never makes changes to the Original files that you import.
When you export a file with LR edits the file size generated will depend on the edits applied and the size and quality settings you choose in the export dialog.

  • Two step import, downsizing image file sizes and/or keeping copies?

    hi all,
leonie was kind enough on another thread to suggest a two step import from the iphone in order to make sure that there is no accidental deletion or data loss. my understanding (i'm repeating it here myself in case i am misunderstanding) is that this routine involves 1. importing images into Aperture via the conventional import method and then 2. backing up to iTunes (to save the images) and 3. verifying (visually i think) that the images are in the Aperture database and then if so allow Aperture to delete all the images from the iPhone.
this seems to make sense to me but i realized i had a couple of questions about general "photo hygiene" related to this kind of thing.
    1. is there some way to downsize file size after images are imported into Aperture? i take a ton of photos and only some are important to keep at a high resolution and i feel like i am stuck between having a huge Aperture database cluttered with lots of photos at high resolution /or/ turning down the file size and finding that i have an important image that is at a low resolution because i forgot to turn up the file size (i think these are in settings somewhere in my phone) before i took the photo or only realized later that it was important to have this image at higher resolution. if i could downsize while thinking about it in Aperture this seems like it would work.
    2. does anyone keep an external copy of their images outside of the Aperture database?
    thanks

    hi terence,
    thank you.
so can i ask if anyone is using an iphone and/or what setting(s) and/or resolution folks are using?
i guess i have a bit of a dilemma in that i take a ton of photos and i only use one at a high resolution while the others can be something as insignificant as a visual note to myself. and it kind of kills me that these could be 1.2 MB in that i have a lot of them. i sort of wish there was a way to downsample imagery since a lot of these are not so important.
anyway. yeah i guess i was wondering if folks do a referenced library or keep an extra copy as a backup (i guess i am 'embedding' images in the library but i forget what i call this in aperture) - and i have started to wonder if there is some utility to doing a referenced library or keeping a backup but this seems like overkill while at the same time a referenced library would allow me the ability to downsample images from what i can tell but i am just guessing here since i haven't tried this method.
    thanks.

  • Why is image file size increasing when changed to CMYK?

When converting the colour of a Jpeg to CMYK in Photoshop CS5 the file size is increasing.
The original image is 352KB and after saving as CMYK it is 2.1MB
Why is this happening and how can I stop it?
I'm using a lot of images for a print project so need to keep file sizes small with resolution of 300dpi. The image dimensions are really small, only about 30mm high so they shouldn't be this large a file size
I am using a clipping path but this doesn't seem to be effecting file size (I checked by saving it as RGB with a clipping path which stayed small, and by saving one without a clipping path in CMYK which was huge)
    Thanks

    Two things may be happening:
    1)      you may be making the file pixel dimensions (width and height) larger due to the 300 dpi requirement.
    2)      CMYK files, with 4 colors per pixel, are expected to be larger than JPG files, which are 3 colors per pixel and the data is compressed in a way that throws away information.
You will not get CMYK files anywhere near as small as JPG files, as you are finding.   If there are compression options available when you save the file, perhaps those can make the files smaller.
What pixel dimensions is the original JPG and what pixel dimensions are the CYMK files?

  • Why is image file size getting inflated by Pages?

I have a newsletter I am creating, and I have inserted 6 photos. They have been pre-downsized using Image Ready, so each image is around 30k. But after they have been inserted, the file size of the entire Pages document is huge. So I opened the Package for the document (Control click on the icon) and I see that now the images are each around 300k. The images have not been manipulated in Pages, no shadows or strokes. They have been resized just a teeny bit (made smaller in all cases).
So what is going on to cause this huge inflation of file size. It is making my document too big to email (although it has helped to control the pdf export to "Good"... or even better to use the Color Sync file size reduction dialog, which is buried so deep in the Print dialog that I can't believe this is a common way to do it...)
Anyway, all help would be appreciated. Thanks, Peter

yes, you are right that the best results that I got were from the Print command and the color sync option to reduce file size. Without that, I took a Pages doc that was around 2.7megs and the pdf varied from 1.8-2.5 using the export command. With the color sync method I did get it down to a 450k pdf, which I am satisfied with.
Still it baffles me that a 40k jpeg will inflate to 300k in Pages. I don't see multiple copies in the Package for the document, so I don't think it is multiplying. And I think that at least one of the images lives in the document without having been resized from within Pages, so that doesn't seem to be involved.
I am using jpegs, adjusting them in Photoshop and then optimizing them with Image Ready, but they are JPEGs all thru the process, and they clearly are averaging around 35-40k after Image Ready does it's t hing. That is the whole purpose of Image Ready, it comes with Photoshop with that intention solely. I could try saving the image file in Preview or some other program and seeing if it inflates liek the Image REady jpegs do.
Anyway, I am still curiouis about why this happens, but I can live with the rather bizarre method of using the Print>Color Sych method.
Thanks to all of you for your help, really,
    Peter

  • Using Pages with iOS. How do I reduce image file size when I create a document with embedded images?

    Hi,
I have created an annual family news letter in Pages on my iPad which incorporates pictures of events, holidays, occasions etc etc. I've then gone to covert it to pdf with the intention of sharing it via email but get a warning message about the resulting file size (in this case 16Mb).
Is there any way of reducing the file size - which is obviously being driven by the images?  The pics are being pulled in from the iPad photo library.
    Thanks Mike

    (1) you are asking about Pages for iOS in a forum dedicated to Pages for OSX.
Most of us aren't using Pages for iOS so it would be more efficient to ask in the forum dedicated to iWork for iOS (at this time this discussion area isn't divided in three areas).
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/app_store/iwork_for_ios
    (2) As you understood why your file is huge, the answer is simple : reduce the size of your picture files before inserting them in Pages documents.
Drop the unneeded areas, reduce the resolution in tools dedicated to image processing before inserting them.

  • Jpeg Image file size for a Downloadable Product

I'm creating a site in BC for the client to sell digital download copies of their original photographs. The purpose of the product for the consumer would be to use the low res download as a screen save or for viewing in a gallery on a desktop, tablet or smartphone device. BC accommodates such products but I haven't a clue as to what size to upload the image files in the BC Product Details page.
Does anyone have any relevant information to share?

If the client intends on selling digital copies of the images, then I would make sure to make the previews small.  Like 600 x 800 small.  If it gets too big people aren't going to be inclined to pay for bigger.
I usually upload my photos in 1040 or 1280 on social media.  But 1280 looks pretty good on most laptops.  That'll change as screens get denser, but as of now I would think if I was trying to sell images and had previews at 1280 a lot of people would just take the 1280 and run.

  • Image file size in 1.1

    Hi folks
Is it me, or is the problem with huge png image files no better with 1.1? I thought this was supposed to have been resolved, but having just republished my site, the files are back to their swollen size (I'd previously compressed them with Imageready).
    Great.....
    Or am I missing something?

AFter updating to 1.1 and letting iWeb publish all to optimize my site, I haven't noticed any smaller file sizes either with previously published images or with subsequent updates. I think I do notice faster loading of pages, though. I'll continue to preprocess my files for iWeb.

  • I need to change my image file size but keep the same pixels. Possible?

I'm trying to upload an image to a mobile ad platform (Adfonic) with the following requirements: Image dimensions 216 x 36 pixels; max file size 3.0 kb; file formats supported GIF, JPG, PNG. I figured out how to change the pixel size but now my file is too big. I have Photoshop CS4 Extended & Vista.
I changed the file resolution but then the pixel size changes. What can I do?
    Thanks!

Save-As, JPEG offers you a quality slider.  You trade quality for size.  This still wouldn't give you what you needed?
You could try JPEG 2000, but beware, it's not as compatible with as many things, and it can look kind of weird, but boy does it compress...

  • Show image file size on desktop

Hi im a Graphic Designer using Mountain Lion and would LOVE for images on my desktop to show more file info like file size other than the name and extension - is this possible? Its purely for a quick glance rather than having to right click and select get info... 2 clicks too many for me

Command + J on an item on the desktop.

  • Web Gallery - image file size

When I upload my images to the Web Gallery the file size of the image is greatly reduced. From 1.8MB file to about 450K - for the download or subscribe options. The image size is not changed, but the file appears to be more heavily compressed. Has anybody else seen this? If so, have you found a way to upload the original file size so subscribers will get your original file?

Sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you got an answer to this question. I am desperately trying to figure out how to post my pictures in their ORIGINAL SIZE to my web gallery.
    Thanks!

  • IPhotoBook Image File Sizes and Formats

Morning (it is here in the UK!)
Similar questions found on the forum - but not exactly what I need.
Please may I ask for your help on the forum.  I notice 'Old Toad' in particular seems to respond to these types of enquiries!
I've got an iMac - about four years old - with Mac OS X 10.6 and iPhoto 8.1
I'm building an iPhotoBook (the Extra Large 13" x 10" Size) of Press Clippings which I'm scanning onto a PC, putting into Photoshop and then transferring to the iMac to create the Photobook.  Doing it this way as my Photoshop license is for my PC, plus my PC is newer.
Each of the two or three photobooks will run to possibly 100 pages - unsure what my maximum page count allowed will be.
I'm scanning at 600 DPI using an A3 Scanner.
Saving as a TIFF once I've created the layout of each page in Photoshop.
So I'll end up with a series of pre-built pages for the 13" x 10" book ready to drop into iPhoto Book.
Looking at my file sizes they're currently anywhere between 38 and 45 MB each.
Am I going to run into problems uploading these?  Will Photobook be happy with my TIFF files?
Such a vast project want to get it right before I end up going back over my initial work.
    Thank you in advance.

Scan to tiff by all means and at a sRGB color profile, but output jpegs. There's nothing to be gained using the tiffs in a book. It's converted to pdf when uploading anyway. Most importing thing, preview the pdf before uploading. That's what your book will look like when finished.
