Image quality / compression on 3G data connections

Hi,
Does anyone know a work-around to the image compression problem that happens when using 3G modems to access the Internet?
On Firefox you can hit SHIFT+A to send a request to reload all images on a webpage and this request bypasses the ISP's compressed cached images and loads them directly from the website. There is also a similar command on IE for PC users. I can't find a way to do it on Safari and the images look a lot like gif's from the early 1990's!
Technical bits: MacBook Air connecting via a Huawei E220 USB Modem on T-Mobile 3G in the UK. Safari version 3.1.1, OS X 10.5.3
I have spoken to T-Mobile and they only have a PC utility that would solve the problem and I spoke to Huawei who just blamed T-Mobile! (BTW this is a common problem on T-Mobile, Vodafone etc. it is the way they compress data to maximise throughput - it isn't something unique to my setup)
Many thanks
Martin

I have found a work around which I think is more than acceptable and should work on all networks (couldn't navigate the German T-Mobile site though!)
I have set Safari to use a public proxy server - any one from the link below should work - and that has done the trick.
http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html
I only set http proxy and left all other protocols un-proxied. I haven't tried setting up locations yet so that my MacBook Air doesn't use the proxy when on my home wireless network. I will try that tonight.

  • Image size vs image quality/compression ratio Powershot A3000

Picked up this camera on Ebay because I read some good reviews, but for the life of me I can't get a resolution more than 180 dpi, whether I follow the directions in the manual for setting manually in the P mode for either size or quality. If I want to print something, it should be at least 300dpi. I want my images to have enough pixels for a nice print. Is there something I am not seeing? Does this camera even have the capability of doing that? Thanks for any input.

thanks for sharing, that's awesome but somewhat overpriced for me who will just use it only once, do you have some cheaper or even free versions, any suggestion will be appreciated!

  • Iphoto 2 reduces image quality on iPad Air

I seems there is a significant reduction in image quality when editing images in iPhoto 2 (iOS7) on an iPad Air.
Not sure which component is the real problem ... and no, I'm not talking about file size (I know they are reduced) - I talk about dpi
    So here's my old setup:
Nikon 5000 (image quality fine), iPad 3, Connection Kit for SD card, iPhoto on iOS 6
... with that setup I was able to save my edited pictures back to camera roll and the still had 300 dpi
    My current setup:
Nikon 5000 (image quality fine), iPad Air, New Connection Kit for SD card (lightning), iPhoto 2.0 on iOS 7
... now my adited images only save back to the camera roll with 72 dpi!
As my DSLR and the SD cards are the same than before it seems that either
    - Connection Kit
    - iPhoto 2
    - iOS7
    - iPad Air
    is the trouble maker!
While iPhoto seems the obvious source for the problem I had an experience that makes me think it could also be the iPad Air:
After creating a video with iVideo (with material from the iPhone 5) I saved this bakc to the camera roll and it was resized (resulting in cuts on the left and right edges) on the iPad.
Copying the same Video to iVideo via AirDrop on my iPhone 5 and savicg it to camera roll there resulted in a correct non-resized version.
So while I can easily live with that workaround for Video the reduction in images from 300 dpi to 72 dpi is signifikant and a real problem.
Anybody experiencing the same, any hints what I can do different to avoid thar reduction?

Just found an interesting article that may be the solution of my problem:
    http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/icloud-photo-stream-and-image -quality/
As I brought together pictures from my DSLR and the iPhone I think I used the Shared PhotoStream folder for editing them in iPhoto 2. In the past I usually worked on the pictures separately (and directly form the Camera Roll) as I didn't mix so much DSLR and iPhone use.
That should explain it and I have to remember to edit directly in the camera roll and the next time.
So it's not a big deal ... I still have all the originals and will save them somewere in my Dropbox if I need them in higher resolution. At least I know I have to change my re-work behavior in the future.

  • Image quality Canon Legria HFM46 in Imovie '11

Just bought the Canon HFM46, a CMOS camera with solid reviews.
Image quality is truly superb when connected to a TV via HDMI.
Very different, however, when I try to edit my clips with Imovie '11.
I do not encounter the notorious jello-artefact, but rather see horizontal (rolling shutter ?) lines that deteriorate the image with the slightest movement of the subject.
I am taping in FXP mode with a 50i frame rate. Will now try with 25 frame rate.
Any advice / shortcuts to resolve this issue ?
    Thank you.

Found elsewhere on the forum that my problem is related to interlacing and that it can be resolved in 3 ways (See italic text below). I tested method 2 and 3: i.e. importing a clip (shot in FXP and 50i mode), at the large setting (960 x 540), alternatively, optimizing an existing clip, with exactly the same effect. Both work, yet I visibly lost image quality. Let's hope Apple brings a solution. Does anybody know whether Final Cut can manage this, better than Imovie does ?
    Thank you
    Solutions:
    1) shoot 25p and use iMakeFullHD software to tell iM that the video REALLY is 1080p25.
    2) shoot 50i and import at 960x540 which makes 540p.
    3) shoot 50i and optimize, which makes your 1080i50 become 1080p25.
Only (#1) preserves the full 1920x1080 quality.

  • Image quality takes a hit in Word PDF conversion despite Compression being Off (Acrobat 9)

When converting a Word doc to PDF, the image quality for embedded pictures seems to be taking a hit. In the resultant PDF, the large pictures have jagged edges, even though when I increase the size in the Word doc the picture looks smooth and high quality.
Under preferences I've changed the Conversion Settings>Images to have Downsampling off for Color/Grayscale/Monochrome images, and also set Compression to Off. I've also tried setting Compression to Automatic (JPEG) with Maximum quality for Color/Grayscale. Both Compression Off and Maximum quality seem to have almost the same image quality, even though Compression Off doubles the size of the file. Neither has quality quite at the level it is in the Word doc.
Is there some way to have the image quality for pictures in the PDF equal what it looks like in Word? Are there any more settings I should be aware of?
I have Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and Office 2007 on Vista 64.

What's the original file format of the images you're inserting into Word, and are they at 100% scale?
We've seen issues with scaled high-res images (like header logos) which printed to PDF perfectly with a GIF or JPEG image, but failed dismally with a PNG even though the image resolution was identical and on-screen view was the same. Word has a quirky way of handling image data sent to the print spool compared to what's shown on-screen.

  • Image compression & Image Quality

    Hi,
I have a site that has a Swf Background where it fills the window completely, so the image isn't static. My only problem is, as it stretches obviously the quality degrades, and i would like it to be quite smooth however it's viewed, but also i need the file to be quite reasonable so it doesn't take ages to display. My Background fades in and out through 3-5 images (the reason the file is quite big, around 500kb+) and i have a progress bar while it loads.
Does anyone have any ideas how i can keep the image quality quite good when it's enlarged without the file size being too big.
I fear this might be impossible

    Great thanks,
Do you know how i can load multiple images into the swf, i'm currently using the following script on frame 1, which loads the first image and voilà!  but what i done was to duplicate this on Frame 2 to load the second image and so on (as i don't want them to all load at once, i'm thinking this might increase the download time) but suddenly it no longer works.
    var imageLoader:Loader;
    function loadImage(url:String):void {
    imageLoader = new Loader();
    imageLoader.load(new URLRequest(url));
    imageLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(ProgressEvent.PROGRESS, imageLoading);
    imageLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, imageLoaded);
    loadImage("Bk01.jpg");
    function imageLoaded(e:Event):void {
    imageArea.addChild(imageLoader);
    function imageLoading(e:ProgressEvent):void {
    Much appreciated!

  • Low File Size/Great Image Quality: H.264, AAC

    1. I created a slideshow in iPhoto, exported it to a QT movie file. The properties of it is as follows:
    Exibit A:
    Dimensions: 720x480
Format: MPEG-4 Video, AAC, Stereo, 44.100kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 7277.87 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 143.58MB
    2. I pulled a QT Movie file from the web with the following properties:
    Exibit B:
    Dimensions: 480x360
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 48.000kHz
    FPS: 28.79
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 01'22
    Data Rate: 868.14 kbits/sec
    Size: 8.5MB
    3. I tried to see if I could compress my movie and keep the quality as comparible to Exibit B. Here's what I ended up with:
    Exibit C:
    Dimensions: 720x480
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 44.100kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 4826.73 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 95.22MB
    4. I tried again. This time creating the same dimension as Exibit B. Here what I got:
    Exibit D:
    Dimensions: 480x360
Format: AAC, H.264, Stereo (LR), 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 2577.17 kbits/sec
    Channel Count: 2
    Duration: 02'46
    Size: 51MB
How can I create a very low size and image quality as Exibit B?
I have QTPro. Do I need something else?
    Thanks.

    Update:
Well playing all exibits on the Windows workstation worked just fine after the update. I now has QT7.
Next...I've exported Exibit A down to 8MB (Exitbit F)by recommendations from Capt. QTKirk. Here are the properties:
    Exibit F:
Format: AAC, Stereo (LR), 32.000kHz, H.264, 720x480, Millions
    FPS: 15
    Data Size: 8.5MB
    Data Rate: 429.79kbits/sec
    Overall Quality:
Video: Fair at 720x480; much better at 486x324; overall choppy transitions as well
    Audio: Fair -close to mono.
    Anyone else have any suggestions?
How and what are others using to get the audio/video quality as crisp and sharp as what's shown in the QT Movie Trailer site?

  • Image quality issues in PS - word to PDF

    Hi,
I am having major image quality issues when trying to make my word document a clean, clear PDF. Images become distorted. Borders for tables and text that are equal px size look like they are different sizes throughout the document.
I have searched the internet, read help, and tried many different things:
Word 2007 - Changed image %, image size, export options, adjusted px for borders, used different styles
Acrobat 9 Pro - Changed import settings, import options, print options, tried press quality, high quality, etc.
Photoshop CS4 - Changed ppx, file format, compression options
What can I do to get a clean, clear PDF file with the images and borders preserved?
    Thank you.

In converting a MS Office file to PDF, Photoshop cannot help in any way and will likely cause more harm as it may rasterize vector data. Expect your ideal answer in the Acrobat forum.

  • Poor image quality after burning with idvd

I used Final Cut Express to make a 45min movie. When I preview the finished product as a Quicktime file it looks great. BUT when I burn it with idvd, the quality of the video is terrible! Jagged diagonal lines, some color loss, some dancing pixels,...
I have been trying to find the solution to this problem for days on end, I have burned about 20 dvd's now, all in different settings and so on, but the quality is not improved.
First I thought it was my tv, but then I put the dvd in my mac and compared the same scene from my quicktime file with the scene on the dvd, and the difference in quality is staggering! For instance, diagonal white road markings are crisp on the quicktime file, but jagged on the dvd.
What is idvd doing with my movie????? Help me!

My Final Cut Express movie (.mov file) is crisp, and interlaced.
You are missing the point - your CRISP FCE movie is mpg-2 compressed by iDVD - that's what DVDs are - mpg-2 compressed video content. Unfortunately, mpg-2 is a very low quality CODEC compared to modern CODECs like h.264.
The best image quality out of iDVD will result in using the 'Best Performance' mode of encoding - this requires your content be under 60 minutes for a single-layer disc.
'Best Performance' encoding uses fixed bit-rate encoding that produces a DVD with about as high playback bit-rate as can be supported by set-top DVD players.
You have three choices: (1) live with the mpg-2 compression on a DVD because you can't do anything about it, (2) use the h.264 CODEC out of FCE and create a data DVD with the file that can be played back in computers, (3) make a Blu-ray disc if you have the equipment and buy the software.

  • Poor Image Quality at Start Menu

    Hi All
I use iDVD 08 for my movies and was creating a menu at the start of the program.
While the resolution looks good in iDVD (before burning to DVD), it is not so after. I would like to enquire on how can can improve on the image quality on my DVD.
FYI, I referring to the photos that I put in my start menu. I burn my DVD in NTSC format. Appreciate any help and advise.
    Thanks.
    Jojo

Here's what iDvd's Help Menu states about those 3 encoding settings you inquired about:
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
Can we really tell the difference ?
Yes. I can see the difference. And so can bcd in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8377592#8377592
Keep in mind Burned dvd's are low res devices by nature. Meaning all data is eventually compressed into mpeg 2 (normally). In general, Dvd's have not kept pace with today's higher res cameras and camcorders nor with apple's editing applications (ie, iMovie, FCE, and FCP) and there is very little you can do to improve upon this unfortunately since most macs do not yet support burning a Blu-ray disc. When and if they ever do, then we will see some significant improvements all the way around since Blu-ray dvd's hold at least 5 times the data of a standard dvd and with significantly higher clarity and resolution than the standard Dvd's most of us use today.
    Am I missing something ?
No. You aren't missing anything from what you have described above. Your observations are actually rather astute.
Hope this reply helps but if not just come on back.

  • Poor image quality? Why do Jpeg's look so bad?

If anyone has tips on how to improve the image quality of jpeg's in acrobat.com I'd really like to hear them. I've edited the images in Photoshop (CS4), exported them as jpeg's, and inserted them into my acrobat.com presentation. They look horrible, and there are many artifacts. If I insert the same image into Powerpoint, they look considerably better, but I'd prefer not to have to use it. Is there an image quality setting that I'm missing?
    Thanks for any help,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for posting - and sorry you're having trouble. It sounds as though the image's quality is suffering because it's being down-sized upon insertion. In Presentations, any images larger than 1024 on a side are resized to fit within a 1024 bounds (we do this to optimize performance - important for a web application).
Here are some tips from one of our fine engineers:
For the best looking images, pre-scale your images to fit the size of the presentation before you upload them; for reference, the slide canvas is 720 pixels wide and 540 pixels tall. Any image larger than those dimensions is larger than it needs to be on the client so you and your audience are downloading more data than they will ever see. If you resize your images to fit the size it will appear on the screen, you will have a better looking image.
The choice of image format makes a difference at this scale as well. For image with smooth transitions like photographs of landscapes, jpeg is a good format. For computer generated diagrams like charts, or images with lots of details like text, PNG is a better format.
It is important that the image be scaled to the appropriate size before uploading because the server will recompress any image it needs to scale using JPEG compression. So if you are uploading a PNG image with transparency, you will loose any transparency effect if the image is large enough to require scaling on the server.
I hope this is helpful, Rob. Please let us know if you have any further questions.
    Best regards,
    Rebecca

  • Image Quality In Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010

I am using the new production release of Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010 and I am having an issue with image quality when adding an image to a crystal report.
The image itself is a .TIF file,  and when opened in Windows, the quality of the image, which is mostly text, is very high. The image was created from a electronic PDF form and I intend to use this as a background for the crystal report, over which I will place data fields.
As soon as the image is added to the report you can see the degradation in quality in the design window and in the preview window within visual studio. The quality remains low when viewing the report in the WPF report viewer and when printing from this control.
I have ensured the "Retain Original Image Color Depth" option is checked but this has made no difference (the image is black and white anyway).
The image in the report has been left at its native size, no resizing at all. The image is 355KB in size if that's relevant.
Is there a reason the image looses quality when added to a report? Is it being compressed? More importantly, is there a way to make the image retain its native quality when adding it to a crystal report?
    Thanks in advance.

The following image is the image I am trying to display. Although imageshack has converted it to a png, if you right click and save the image you can open it and zoom in with little image degradation.
    http://img132.imageshack.us/i/j301.png
The following is a screen shot of how the tif file looks in the designer when zooming in:
    http://img138.imageshack.us/i/j30lowquantity.jpg
The second image has lost its clarity and is unusable when printing.
    I hope this helps.

  • RDS Image Quality; lossless or lossy?

Hello, is the Windows 2012 Server RDS desktop session lossless or lossy? In other words is the compressed desktop image/data of the remote desktop perfectly reconstructed from
the compressed data? I would like to use RDS for
a remote medical viewing task, but the desktop I am viewing must be perfectly replicated across multiple hi-resolution monitors. The image quality can not be lossy or degraded in any way. If I had the bandwidth LAN&WAN (which I do), is this possible with

    Hi Frank,
You may set the RDSH server(s) to Lossless using the below group policy object:
