Image quality standards for DVD

Hi, just made my first simple iDVD. I included an iPhoto slide show. The results where not good at all. I used psd images, tiff images and jpg, all of them in high resolution and size. The smaller file size was 8mg. I will like to receive a word of advice on how to get a perfect image quality on my slides dvds. In mine, all images looked a bit unfocused or blured. Moving efect changed too much the quality of the images. The result was not good, certainly unusable for commercial purposes.
Also, I used an iDVD premade menu. The shadows of the texts created a pixelation of the background animation. Can this be fixed. Can we get perfection with iDVD? IF not, wich will be the software to use.
Thanks a lot

I called Apple's tech support and was basically told that this is the way it's suppose to look (which is terrible compared to DVDSP3) and that if I don't like it, I should experiment with filters. The guy pretty much made me feel like I'm stupid and just imagining this. If I'd been there in person, I'm sure he would've used finger puppets to try to explain what NTSC is, as that is the only thing he would talk about. I used the de-interlace filter and ended up with the same poor results. I've been using DVDSP3 for two years and have never had any problems. The Tech Support guy really didn't care. I'm wondering if maybe something went wrong in the install process. Since I have deadlines on several DVDs, I had to remove DVDSP4 and re-install 3. Now everything looks fine again. Thank you for your help though. I'm glad I tried the de-interlace filter; at least it helps to narrow down what the problem might be. I'll post more if we ever find out what was wrong.

  • Really poor image quality when watching DVDs

    Hi,
I was just wondering whether anybody else has experienced really poor image quality whilst watching DVDs on their MacBook? For me, the image is really grainy or blurry. I am pretty sure it cannot be the DVDs as this problem is happening with every film I watch!
Is this a common problem? What can be done (if anything) to resolve this?
    Many thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
open system preference>display, and check if your color depth is in millions color.
try other dvd player like VLC for mac:

  • Poor image quality save for web

It doesn't matter whether i'm exporting from Ai or Ps or whether it's CS6 or CC. I have changed the raster settings in Ai and i've also tried all optimization options with all different export file types (jpg, png, gif) at all different quality settings. It doesn't matter if I start with an ai, eps, pdf, png... the export result is always poor quality.
I have tried exporting at 300ppi and that does fix the quality issue and bloats the file size, but this way (the export route) is so time consuming since you have to resize your artwork each time as well as the artboard so that it doesn't cut off pixels. Save for web never used to have these quality issues and it also never used to cut off pixels around the edges. These workarounds prove very time consuming and produce file sizes that are not ideal.
When i first noticed this issue I was using Mavericks with CS6 and since am using Yosemite and Creative Cloud.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Create any bitmap or vector graphic in Ai or Ps, It doesn't matter whether you convert text to outlines or not
    2. Save for web
    3. View image in any application or browser to see poor quality and pixel trimming. Others running the same version and system are not having this issue, but I have checked many forums and found many others that do have this same issue but can't seem to find a solution.
Results:stair stepping, degradation, pixel trimming, general poor image quality
Expected results: Previously the save for web feature allowed for a decent quality image

First try the Cleaner. here's the link for CC but there exists one for Cs6 as well Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Everything I have read says that you kind of have to compromise file-size for quality. Could you post a screenshot of your settings?

  • Luma/chroma standards for DVD video

FCPro has the option of doing a range check for both the luma and chroma of your video to ensure that it's broadcast legal. I'm mastering a video for DVD, not for broadcast...are the standards any different for DVD-only video?
    Thanks.
    G5 Dual 2.5 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No they are the same, or at least, they don't have their own standards. You'll find that adhering to the broadcast standards will usually give you the best looking picture anyway. They weren't setup for a proper transmission, they were set up for a proper display on TV sets, so that really doesn't change when you are making a DVD to played back on a TV set, right?

  • Best quality compression for DVD

Trying to compress a 7 minute project from Final Cut for best quality on a DVD, type 5. Been using the pre-set "Best quality: 90mins", but wondering if there is a higher quality compression I can get for such a short project? Have most up to date versions of Final Cut, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro. Thanks!

You can duplicate any preset you want, then adjust it to suit your needs.

  • Best quality conversion for DVD with audio?

This has to be easier than it seems. I have an hour long video I want to compress with the best resolution for DVD, but Compressor help tells me I "must convert the video into MPEG-2 (SD and HD projects)," but this is video only.
I just want to compress this 60GB video losing as little quality as possible and throw it on a DVD with audio, but I just can't make sense of Compressor to find the best way to do this.
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the response. I did try this, save for the Create DVD Job Action, but it just creates one audio and one video file. I'm trying the Create DVD job action now, so hopefully that will work.
Here is a screenshot of my batch. Does this look correct?
    Thanks again.

  • Opinions on Highest quality encode for DVD

I am doing a 16:9 Loop DVD for a tradeshow display. It will be shown on a 50" Plasma screen. I am trying to get the best quality encode on the screen. The project is 50 Sec long (storage & encode time not an issue) and contains both graphics and video elements. Video elements were shot on HDV. Compositing done in After Effects at 1920x1080. There does not seem to be a direct way to encode from AfterEffects to MPEG2, probably because the frame size is not MPEG2 standard. What would be the absolute best workflow to get to MPEG2 with as little artifacting as possible? I'm thinking uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2?
    G5 2.5 Dual   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Someone here said once that 10 bit was overkill and that there may be issues with some encoders's conversions from 10-bit down to 8-bit.
Having said that, I'd use either 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed codec. You probably want to resize your After Effects render down to 720x480 on export from your render queue, rather than have the MPEG2 encoder do it. Then take the uncompressed 720x480 file and MPEG2 encode away. Since it's only 50 seconds, I'd do a 7.5Mbps CBR 16:9 encode (if delivery is via DVD-R).

  • I want high quality SD for DVD

alright, i've got a 1.1 gig video about 5 minutes long that is in the .mov format (raw out of fcp). I'll let you know what I have already done and if you could, please let me know where I could improve. I took the .mov video and put it in compressor. Told it to convert to mpeg-2 and make a 2-pass VBR best quality. After being compressed, I dropped the .m2v video and dolby soundtrack into dvd studio pro and burned the baby. Looks pretty good, anything I should do to make it even clearer?

    Check out this site:

That will show you how to format a USB stick for use on both PC and Mac.
If the problem continues take it to an Apple store and have them check it out.

"exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table) is a Microsoft file system optimized for flash drives.[3] It is proprietary and patented."
That first site explains it at length.

  • Wanting highest quality result for DVD

I intend for my projects to be viewed on TV. Are there 'essential' steps and or settings I need to pay particular attention to in order to have a crisp clean product? For instance, during ...
    Capture
    Production
    Exporting/Burning
These are not necessarily artistic projects, home video of children, christmas', vacations, etc - just want a respectable result.

I use both iMovie 08 and iMovie 06, if I want to make a DVD I prefer iMovie 06. iMovie 08 is not as DVD friendly as iMovie 06.
iMovie 08 has replaced "Share to iDVD" with "Share to media browser". Also iMovie 08 cannot set chapter markers, this has to be done with another program.
When using iMovie 06, one mouse click will set a chapter marker EXACTLY where you specify. In just a few seconds set all your chapter markers. When you are done editing just "share to iDVD 08" and all of your chapter markers will be there!
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
Your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD 08 in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie '08, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
Apple includes iMovie 06 as a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)

The Web site below has a good comparison of iMovie 08 and iMovie 06.

  • Minimum Standards for DVD

    Happy New Year,
I'm a newbie to DVD authoring, and I realize that some disks
with high bit rates don't play well on older DVD players.
That applies even to commercially released disks.
So what would be a good guideline for acceptable playback?
Would using Compressor's 120 minute settings (5Mbps avg,
7.5 Mbps peak) result in a disk that would play on most
    modern players?
Another thoughts on this subject would be most appreciated.
    Les

For 120 minutes assuming AC3 audio, a peak and target of about 5 or less would be better on a DVD5.

  • Audio standard for DVD authoring?

    Hello,
I'm currently very close to the finish line of a project I'm working on, its a 6 minutes commercials that will go on a DVD and distributed along with their brochure.
Now, my client specifically wants 5.1 channel surround sound and placing all voices in the center channel, this is actually my first time authroing 5.1 channel surround and I really don't have much idea on what the normal workflow should be.
In FCP I assigned channel 1&2 (left and right) to be the soundtrack for the commercial, while channel 3 (center) is all the voices, channel 5&6 (rear left&right) is just copy of channel 1&2 but play at lower volume.
When I tried to play the DVD, however, it seems like all the bass is missing, I originally thought the DVD player should take the low frequency out of all other channel and mix them into LFE, but apparently its not doing that.
So I exported all the audios from FCP into just a stereo pair, and in SoundTrack Pro, combined the stereo into a mono. then import that mono audio back into FCP project at channel 4 (LFE) and then applied a graphicalEQ to it, turn any frequency above 500Hz all the way down.
I've managed to get what I wanted, but its just a hassle having to work it like this. I'm wondering is what I'm doing anywhere near "correct"?
If someone don't mind sharing your experience about creating contents in 5.1 surround sound, I'd really appreciate it!
    Thanks!

In addition to Ian's suggestion, go and have a look at the DVInfo forums (www.dvinfo.net/conf).
You'll have to register to post, but there's a good Final Cut section there.

  • How to export a complex Keynote to high quality video for DVD?

I have had dozens of attempts to turn a complex Keynote into a high quality video.
Either they turn out disappointiingly way low res
or they are very choppy with half the transitions gone
or they Cannot make the video at all
    HELP.
I need to turn this project in to my client today.

If you use the DVD export in Keynote 3 with a self playing movie, the quality will be fine...just don't trust what you see on your mac screen, play it on a DVD player to check the quality. I did a test a while back and it was only the pauses that looked bad.
    Read about it here:
    http://www.keynoteuser.com/news/?p=135
pay close attention to what I complain about...it's just the slide pauses, not the normal motion playback, which means selfplaying stuff looks pretty decent (though never as good as the original, but that's the fault of the DVD format, not Apple).

  • What is "High Quality" standard for 150 minimum files?

To be listed on iTunes U, there is a requirement of a minimun 150 "High Quality" media files. What is the description of "High Quality" ? Is this a technical standard or a content standard?

  • Image Quality for Slideshows

Hello Everyone. I just purchased Photoshop Elements 9 and I have just joined the Adobe Forum. I am an amateur photographer with a challenge. I am creating slideshows for family, and before I go any further, I need to get some questions answered about quality. I have scanned old photos to my computer. I have scanned old negatives to my computer. I have digital pictures on the computer with varying ranges of size and quality. When these are imported into a slideshow program to be put on DVD, what kind of sizing and pixels per inch do I need to use so that when the DVD is played on a TV, (for instance, my brother has a HDTV that is 46"), the quality of the photos remain good for that size of a screen?  Another example would be a slideshow of my trip to the desert where I shot a couple hundred photos, and when I made the DVD, some of the images appeared pixelated, and/or noisy. The pictures were shot with a Nikon D50 3008x2000 pixels, 300dpi 24 bit depth jpegsRGB. The size of the original file is 2.78MB. I would appreciate any input on this. Thanks so much. Arthur

Is the image quality improved for slideshows using the new Pro Encoding option in iDVD08? For me, the quality was unacceptable in previous versions
iDVD '08s Pro Encoding mode won't improve things if your total DVD size is under 60 minutes (for a single layer disc) and can use Best Performance mode encoding.
Best Performance uses a encoding bit-rate about as high as a DVD player can handle on playback. The Pro mode advantage will 'kick in' when you have content over 60 minutes. Best Quality simply picks a fixed encoding rate necessary to fit 'standard' content into the space available. The Pro mode will look at your content first and can assign a high encoding bit-rates for content with lots of detail or movement and a lower encoding bit-rate for content with less detail or movement. Pro modes highest encoding bit-rate shouldn't exceed the fxed encoding bit-rate used by Best Peformance.
For slideshows, you must keep in mind that the DVDs we can make today are low resolution devices - NTSC discs are less than 640x480 pixels at best (that's less than 0.3 megapixels) - so your great 10 megapixel digital images MUST loose a lot of detail in the encoding process.
FWIW - I recently made several large slideshows using FotoMagico that I felt gave me better quality than iMovie or iDVD directly. Others like Photo to Movie. Both offer free trial versions.

  • Poor Image quality in iDVD from iMovie

After creating a video in iMovie using photos, video clips, transitions, music, and Ken Burns, things look great. Everything looks fine in iMovie ('09). I then export it to iDVD to create the menus, etc. So far so good. After burning the disc, the picture quality is really horrible, especially the photos using Ken Burns. I do not know how to describe it....wavy, pixilated, something. The video used, taken using a digital camcorder is tolerable if I remember to deinterlace. What do I have to do to get these pics to look right? IF I export in iMovie using Quicktime, the resulting .MOV is fine....looks great. After exporting to iDVD, it looks awful.....Any help would be appreciated....thank you.
    jrsorte

    Chris,
    not using any de-interlacing
Both iMovie 08 and iMovie 09 only use one field of a DV video frame. iMovie 5 and earlier used both frames. I'm not sure that using just one field makes a lot of difference when the content goes through mpg-2's heavy compression to make a DVD in iDVD.
As far a still images are concerned, the best sizes for NTSC DVDs are 720x540 pixels for standard video and 854x480 pixels for widescreen. Going to larger image sizes can actually reduce the image quality on a DVD.
