  • Sync or ASync for a Data Warehouse environment?

We have a 7 TB DW environment that we're using High Availability on. Almost all of the data is bulk loaded nightly/ weekly. We've been running this in Sync-commit mode, but lately the Transaction Log in our Primary DB has grown to > 1/2 TB waiting on
the bulk loads to be committed on the Secondary server.
Would this scenario be mitigated if we were using ASync-commit mode? Would the TLog, no longer waiting for the Secondary to synchronize, be able to shrink as it normally would (of course considering TLog backups, etc.)?
    TIA, ChrisRDBA

    Hi,
Whether you use Sync or Async mirroring( I guess you are talking about mirroring) logs generated by transaction would be same. IMO problem here is logs being generated. Of course in sync mirroring transaction will wait for commit on mirror to commit
it on principal so in sync commit would be delayed there would not be affect to transaction log.
From what you gave I suggest you to break bulk load operation in more quantised batches. I mean to say decrease amount of data being loaded followed by (If possible) more transaction log backups and in this case Async would help to speed up commit but remember
chances of Data loss in case of disaster will increase in Async Mirroring plus you need to have Enterprise edition to take benefit of Async mirroring.

  • FAULTY ZEN HEADPHONE SOCKETS.

3 people i know had had problems with theres, 2 have taken them back and got new players only to be presented with the same problem re-occuring. I think this is a genuine design flaw with the product. Ive only had mine since december, my friends problems occured after just 2 months! Its a real hassle to send it back & forward to be repaired. Have Creative rectified this problem with its newer models?

"Well it's already being discussed in at least one thread. It's probably best to try and keep any further discussion in that same thread rather than creating new ones. It won't draw any more attention to the situation."
I disagree. Many might not have seen the other references to the message. Many don't read all the messages on the board. Imo problems will occur even with portable players that have the strongest headphone jacks if they are used with headphones with striaght plugs or if they are handled very roughly. Ask a repairman at a repair shop that repairs portable audio, and he will probably tell you that a broken headphone jack is by far the most common problem that he repairs on portable music players, and this has been the case for many years.

  • Spaces has been broken (IMO) since 10.6 and is still broken in 10.6.3...

As many recall, Spaces was introduced in OS X 10.5 Leopard... From the get go I found it one of the most useful utilities to come along in a long time... What a great way to organize a desktop... I would set up Space 1 to be Web browsers, Space 2 for email clients, Space 3 for running Windows on my Mac, Space 4 for Excel and so forth... Twas wonderful... If I had multiple Excel spreadsheets open I could go find them all over in Space 4 and with no other clutter, just Excel, nice and clean...
And then Snow Leopard came along and it all changed... Since OS X 10.6 first came out and still through today in 10.6.3, on first open of a given application, as it should it will still open in its assigned Space, like for me, the first Excel document will still open in Space 4 no matter what Space I am in when I launch Excel... So far, so good...
But, for every subsequent opening of an Excel document, the document will open in whatever Space you happen to be in at the time... Busted... Almost worthless (IMO)... Why bother to have an assigned Space if in fact, it really isn't the Space where a given app's docs will open??? In Leopard they opened in one, defined Space... Made sense... In Snow Leopard, they open all over the place even if there is an assigned Space... Seems to make no sense...
But what I find amazing is almost no one seems to care... Myself and three or four other posters have been talking about this since Snow Leopard first came out... But no one else... And that same small group of folks have all used Feedback to let Apple know we think it was sooooo much more useful in Leopard, but update after update, it stays in this (IMO) far less useful mode...
One question I have is does the very small number of folks who have seemed to talk about this means that folks don't use Spaces???? Or does it mean that maybe I'm crazy and that others can imagine how the way it is deployed in Snow Leopard is not really broken but instead the way Apple intends it to work????
I've pretty much given up on Apple ever responding... I have actually gotten in the habit of manually switching to the Space BEFORE I open say a second or subsequent Excel doc into Space 4 (in my case). But that's more work, not less, and manually switching to the Space first seems to defeat the entire purpose for Spaces in the first place...
Anyway, if anyone has any comments I'd be interested in hearing them...
    thanks much... bob..

My huge annoyance is how Preview converts ai, .eps and .ps files to .pdf files.
It has progressively deteriorated from Tiger to Leopard to Snow Leopard.
In Leopard it defaulted to saving the .pdfs to the Documents folder not the place of origin and would regularly crash if more than a few (sometimes just 2) files were opened simultaneously.
In Snow Leopard nothing was fixed and now the names are stripped off the converted files so that they are all called Untitled.
Apple must have received hundreds of bug reports (I diligently sent one every time Preview crashed) and several feedbacks detailing the problem, to the point I believe persecuting Designers and ruining their work has become a NEXT programmers secret objective.
Except for a couple of minor bug fixes to do with drag & drop in Preview, I am puzzled where the so-called improvements in Snow Leopard really benefit user.

  • LiveCam.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Constant Error. HELP PLEASE

Alright so basically, my parents got a buy-one-get-one-free offer on webcams at christmas, and so they gave me one for my own as i lost my old one. Everything was working fine, seemed like a great camera.
However, randomly one evening when i tried to open Live! Cam Center to record a video, it refused to open, instead giving me a small white box with the loading symbol inside (thats where live! cam center usually opens out into the UI) and a boz saying "LiveCam.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.".
Now i thought that it was just a random one-off thing, but it happens EVERY time, WITHOUT fail. The cam works fine on MSN and skype etc, just when i try to record anything or manually take pictures , cam center doesn't work. And it doesn't seem to just be cam center, almost every software i've tried for just plain recording/capturing failed.
Tried updating to latest drivers and software, tried using older versions, tried using the cam from my family pc (identical cam) - failed, tried using all different USB ports randomly, failed. I'm really desperate here now, i'm at the point where i'm almost going to give it away and buy a non-creative webcam cos its really annoying.
My webcam is the Live! Cam Video IM Pro. Here's a copy of the error report from windows, its the same every time:
    AppName: livecam.exe AppVer: 2.2.3.0 ModName: ctvidcap2.dll
    ModVer: 2.2.3.0 Offset: 00002ca

IMO, seeing that you are using WinXP, you might be better off with the older Flash 10.3.183.90 version. Flash 11.0 and later have "improvements" that don't work on WinXP - only Vista and later. Adobe did continue to support and provide security updates for Flash 10.3 until a few months before WinXP went EOL back in April of this year.

  • Problem changing the location of multiple users home directories...

I've just set up a new entry level model iMac for my Mum. Without getting into a discussion about the benefits or otherwise of doing so, I partitioned the hard disk into two with the first partition for the system and the second a scratch disk for files etc. I set up two users, one for my Mum and one for my younger brother. I then copied the users folder across to the scratch disk and in advanced options in the users list set each account's home folder to the relevant user on the scratch disk. This is the same set up as I have on my own system and with which I have no problems and which runs well and cleanly. I have only one account on my system. However on the iMac, the second user (my brother) is unable to write to the new home directory. Downloads don't work and preferences including right click for magic mouse, dock etc are forgotten instantly. It seems there's a permissions issue.
I've set the machine up this way in order to keep all their files separate from the system after their last Mac got very bogged down. I expected it to work in exactly the same way as my own. Does anyone know how to successfuly set up both user accounts in this way?
Any advice would be much appreciated...

    still not advisable though IMO.

how exactly did you copy the home directories? did you do it using drag and drop in finder from one account? then the copied home directories both are owned by that account and the permissions need to be changed. please clarify if that's what you did.

  • How I FIXED the black out problem!

I posted this in another thread, but thought it might get lost, so I'm posting it here in the hopes that it may help others who are out of warranty and have nothing to lose.
Please know that this is a very diffcult procedure and if you're not comfortable with the idea of possibly destroying your entire laptop, don't even think about trying this!
First, you will need to download the appropriate service manual for your model PowerBook:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~strahm_s/manuals.html#pbks
Second, I would highly recommend that you go to your local Radio Shack and pourchase the correct tools. You will need a set of precision screwdrivers and a Torx #8 (I think) also. I also recommend that you obtain about 15 of those little zip lock baggies that they put extra coat buttons into (of course any bag will do).
As you take apart the laptop and remove the screws, you should place each screw set into a bag and label it with a Sharpie. Believe me, this is worth the time and effort to do this. The service manual will list an Apple part number for the screws as you take them out. When you reassemble the laptop, you will simply find the part number of the screw you need.
    The Problem (Overview):
My screen would flicker between all black parts in the lower 1/3 to 2/3rds of the display. Adjusting the angle of the display would generally fix the issue until it was moved again or needed another adjustment. I used it like this for a few months before it finally was no longer fixable by simply adjusting the display. One day it just wasn't fixable by adjustment anymore. I couldn't see anything above 2/3rds of the display. previously, the powerbook had been dropped on the corner by the power plug, and must have caused damage to the display.
At first I thought it was a loose connection in the LVDS or video cable, but upon taking the entire unit apart, I found that the cable was very secure and no amount of jiggling it had any effect on the display itself. It definitely wasn't a pinched cable or loose connection in the cable.
I then started a search to buy a replacement screen. And upon taking the unit apart to remove the panel itself from the rear casing, I would preiodically plug the power back in and power up the PowerBook to see if anything I was doing was having any effect on the display. With the rear casing removed, I noticed that applying slight pressure on the rear of the screen on the left middle edge would affect the display and cause the image to appear again perfectly.
Obviously, I couldn't use the PowerBook this way, so I cut some narrow strips of rubber and used a glue stick to adhere them in the same spots where my fingers were. With the rear casing snapped back in place, it applied direct pressure to this same area, resulting in a perfect picture!
The actualy rubber pieces I used came from underneath the Airport card, so if you want to use something else, perhaps a strip from a bicycle innertube would do the same trick and would be of the same thickness.
Since putting it back together, the image is perfect. I have noticed that some [hard] direct thumping of the display bezel or hard shaking of the unit will cause some flicker, but in the past, even the slightest motion would knock the image out. So IMO, this is an incredible improvement. Since my "repair" I haven't had the issue appear once!
If you have no other solutions to try, and are somewhat savvy with taking things apart, give my method a shot. I'm just amazed that it works so well!
The image is of the rear of the panel. Facing you, it would be the left side of the screen. Where you apply the strip may be in another location. I don't recommend putting it anywhere except on the edges of the screen or you will likely damage the panel or introduce spots or pressure smudges. Good luck!
BTW, you may be able to test to see if your panel could be fixed with a similar approach by gently squeezing the sides of the display while it's connected to your laptop and watching for the screen to come back or flicker more. In my case, the squeezing definitely affected the image quality: when I applied pressure the image was stable. When I let go, it went to $hit.

  • What the bleep is the problem?

My computer has suffered from sluggish behavior for over 8 months. The problem comes and goes for the most part mostly stays. Anyway my good friend and computer guru kept on that it was the RAM. The ever succession of upgrades occured each time with bad behavior occuring. Then the system got very bad and my friend was out of answers. He did say go to one of the old conficurations of RAM and then see.
I am not sure if that helped or hurt but from what I can tell by doing that things seem to escalate. I went back to the current configuration just to return to my old problems.
There are four DIMM slots and for me I have 16gigs in three. Since going to four 2gigs did not help the situtation I ruled out RAM. I directed my attention to the HD. I have a clone which I worked off of for a couple of days an it was a relevation. The beach ball was non existent. With the normal boot drive the beach was a common thing.
I then said it had to be the HD. Cut to a new HD and today I am building my drive from scratch when the same problems arrise.
What is going on? Do I have to go to the shop?
    BF

I had done a clean install recently before  making my clone and still my current HD caused problems.  Basically I feel that given the track record it was not the HD as the same thing should not happen to two internal drives one being new and not one external clone. Normally I would restore from the clone but given all the stuff I had been through and what happened today the problem was elsewhere IMO.

  • Problems with wireless mouse/keyboard after upgrade to snow leopard

    Hi!
I am wondering if someone has some insight for me.  I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from Tiger. I have been using a Logitech S 530 wireless keyboard/mouse combo for a few years.  I am now having problems with them irratically.
    1. When on line and the page is large, I often cannot move the blue bar at the bottom of the screen to scroll to the right. What happens is like a stutter; as I am dragging the bar, it and the page shake rapidly side-to-side. Sometimes, I can drag it to the right, but as soon as I let go, it snaps back to the left.  This does not happen in Word.
    2. When in boxes with dropdown options, only occasionally does that happen.  The dropdown either doesn't show, or it flashes quickly.  Sometimes it will work after clicking many times. This happens with dropdown menus as well as search boxes that have dropdown choices for previous searches or suggested searches a la Google.
    3. When I use my function key or mouse to display all windows, I can't choose the one I want.  Regardless of which one I put my cursor over, only the left-most one is highlighted and comes to the front when I click.
    4. There is a varying lag. Sometimes the system is responsive, and other times there is a lag of varying lengths before the system responds to the mouse action (click, drag, zoom, etc.)
    5. For a while, my left mouse button wouldn't work.  I reconfigured it, that seems to have done the trick.
    6. Today, I can't open any of the menu items on Firefox.  I can move the cursor there, but when I click on any of them, nothing happens. This is okay in Safari.
I have disconnected and reconnected the usb, restarted the computer, and tried to reinstall the software for the mouse and keybord. When I did that, I got a message saying it couldn't install on the current OS, so I went to Logitech and dowloaded and installed the latest version (which indicated it is for OS X 10.6.8.)
I don't know if this is a Snow Leopard problem, but it started sometime after I upgraded.  Thanks in advance for any help!
    Donna

Update all your third party software  or uninstall and reinstall 10.6 versions.
If your going to 10.7, be warned a lot of software will not work at all and your 10.5 era machine will be slow, perhaps even have problems as 10.7 is problematic on older hardware.
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
IMO save for a new 10.8 machine after this summer.
See #1-15 here, tune yourself up good.

  • Problem with Windows media player on MAC

I got a new macbook and installed windows vista. When I wanted to play CDs on windows media player there comes a message"windows media player have aproblem..." and the window closes. I contacted the Microsoft support system and they said that the it is the problem with the mac that the Macbook is not really supporting some of the files and they told me to contact the Apple support and even then they could not solve the problem. I returned the first laptop and got a new Macbook again and even the second macbook has the same problem. Could anmy one tell me why this is happening? If your a Macbook user with windows, did you notice this kind of similar problem? Please do let me know. Thanking you.

If you have the current version of Microsoft Windows Media Player for Mac installed, there is little you can do. The WMPFM is not kept as current as the Windows version (IMO, I think MS hates Apple - and this is intentional).

  • What is teh best solution for my Problem??

    hello everyone
i'am planing to develop a Patient Management System (PMS)
since i 'm not that guru in the J technologies i would like you to get me some help with this decision:
what is the best solution for developeing an intranet "PMS" which should handles data (connection to postgresql) and runs some algorithm (for planing puropose) im background ??
1 developeing a web based solution (servlet and jsp and and ..)
2 developeing an application wich will be manging everything ??? (a kind of programm with its own GUI)
3 you may have an other idea solution and ill be gald for any advices
ps sorry for my english its not that great ;)

Web applications are all the rage these days and IMO rightly so as they greatly reduce deployment cost and headaches.
They do have some drawbacks though which for you might be important.
I can imagine that sooner or later (probably sooner in my experience) a requirement to interface with hardware installed on the client machines will emerge.
Whether this is a barcode scanner or a chipcard reader to get client information from some form of card issued to the client, or maybe a label printer to print out labels for medication bottles doesn't matter, you need to access the client machine directly.
Web applications have great difficulty with that (in fact, it's all but impossible).
You could go for an applet solution but that's contrived at best and still leaves the same problems.
So in your situation an old-fashioned client/server application (maybe using web services to communicate with the serverside application) is likely the best longterm solution.
You'd have the database remote so everyone has access to the same data, being accessed through processes run on the server and called by the clients. These can also do most of the business logic, leaving the clients relatively dumb responsible mainly for data validation and entry and presentation of the results.

  • Problems with context-sensitive HTML made from importing FM 10 to RH9

This worked in October and it doesn’t work now.
Start with a clean, well-formatted Frame 10 book with multiple chapters.  Chapters, Heading 1, 2 and 3 headings have various FM Markers TopicAlias with ID for calling the help.
    Example of FM marker: ID_HELP_SYSTEM_DEFAULT
Import FM book to RH 9 –pointed to an AllStyles.fm doc as a template, pagination on the above 4 headings, cross-refs mapped, on the Other Settings page the Context Sensitive Help Marker is set to TopicAlias.
Import looks spiffy;  great TOC, Index, formatting, links, everything is exactly like I expected. Create chm file help. It looks great too. This part works well IMO.
My.h file is formatted with Hex number to match the application’s call.
    Example:
    #define ID_HELP_SYSTEM_DEFAULT 0x3F131
    #define ID_HELP_EDITDATASET_TOOLBAR 0x3F132
Rename my mapping h file to BSSCDefault.h and put in root directory replacing the one RH makes.  [When RoboHelp makes an h file, the numbers it assigns do not match what my application calls for. Changing these is not an option. I have hundreds of mapped IDs.]
Reopen RH  and view the BSSCDefault. h file from RH. It has magically changed the Hex numbers to 6 digit numbers.
    Example:
ID_HELP_SYSTEM_DEFAULT              258353      Saving Project Defaults as System Defaults
ID_HELP_EDITDATASET_TOOLBAR  258354      Editing Datasets Using the Mouse
The Mapped IDs are blue and are not locked.  My FM TopicAlias Markers are all listed as Map IDs, I have Map#s for them and they point to the correct topic.  The center panel  shows Assign as grayed out. The project that worked in October looked just like this too, I checked.
Recomplie. Place new chm file in application. It will open from the menu item for Help, it will open from F1 but it will not open from any of the mapped Help buttons.
I uninstalled/reinstalled RH 9 and tried reimporting/compileing with an unpatched version. No change, still borked.
There has not been a change in the application; there are no new IDs in this version. I tried the new compiled help in an older version of my application and it will not work. Same behavior.
Any suggestions? Anyone else have this problem? What am i missing?

I dont use the settings file, I use a FrameMaker doc as a template. It has all my styles and I set the others before the import. There arent very many.
But, since you import from Frame, would you look at this and verify?
Looking at Map File in the Edit Map IDs dialog On the left the panel the Map ID is listed, then the Map # and finally the topic title.
Do your Topics show a notation at the end?
    Example: Averaging Datasets #CSH_71
Then on the Topic panel if you find that same topic you see
Topic symbol -Averaging Datasets   [and the Topic properties show “no map ids for this topic]
Bookmark symbol -Averaging Dataset#CSH_71 [topic properties show the map id when you select it]
    Bookmark symbol -Averaging Datasets#IX_averaging_datasets
    Bookmark symbol-Averaging Datasets#XREF_25075_Averaging Datasets
I understand the Index and cross ref markers, but the isolated book mark is odd. You would think the notation would be on the topic
The chm file from October works in my latest build, and the developers swearz they changed NOTHING in the way it is called. I still have to talk to QM who do the builds just in case.

  • A few problems with Leopard running on my White iMac...

I have only found 2 problems so far with Leopard running on my iMac. First off, the most annoying one:
Sometimes, especially when switching users, the screen turns to the "gray screen of death." You know, the one with the request to restart your computer in like 4 languages and a huge picture of a power button... anyway, it is getting quite annoying and I wish I could make it stop. It has also happened when I have been dealing with moving large amounts of data, "large pictures, movies, etc.)
And now, the second problem. I was just looking up the memory left on my hard drive when I noticed something I hadn't before. my 160gb hard drive had 50gb left. not too strange there. but when I checked through all the things (apps, users, system, library, developer, etc.) in it (I simply did apple-i and checked the gb each of them took up) and after a quick add-up on my calculator widget, all the things in the hard drive added up to 50gb. so I have 50gb free, 50gb used and a 160gb hard drive. How does that work? Do I need to do something to get that extra 60gb back or is it just gone???

There's probably a way to coerce Finder.app into showing everything
(all is possible in unix) -- but I don't know the OS-X magic words.
It told me that improper of the "sudo" command could lead to data loss
and i don't want to risk doing anything stupid (like a misspelling) that
could lead to my hard drive being wrecked.
Good advice. IMO, the 'du' (disk usage) command is safe, because it's
'read only' -- but I undestand that you'd be hesitant to trust your data
to advice fom an anonymous voice from "The Internets." I can't/won't
    argue with common sense.
You can run the same command without the 'sudo' prefix. It might
miss a few things and/or spit some 'permission denied' messages,
but the results will at least be a lower-bound of disk usage.

  • Firefox does not print. I AM DONE USING FIREFOX UNTIL THEY FIX PRINTING PROBLEMS ONCE AND FOR ALL!

Firefox does not print. Mozilla doesn't seem to care to fix this problem, ignoring the numerous customer requests and pleadings for help. At this point, I AM DONE USING FIREFOX UNTIL THEY FIX PRINTING ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!!!!!!!
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

I honestly think the OP is making the correct decision to quit using Firefox due to all the print-related problems and Bugs that are in Firefox, '''that Mozilla doesn't want to fix'''. And there are more Bugs that affect only the Mac-platform (like the one where the user has to open a page in a new window for the 2nd web page printed from that window), than there are on Windows and Linux.
Users having to reset hidden preferences repeatedly isn't a cure.
The same 3 print-related Bugs in 2002 that caused me to take 6 months to switch over to ''Phoenix'' from IE 5.5, '''are still present in Firefox!''' I print nothing from Firefox these days without viewing Print Preview first, then about 10% of the time I do a "View in Opera" and do a Print Preview there - which shows a good print out 95% of the time (which IMO shows the page isn't at fault), and print it from Opera.

  • What are the common problems with the 15 inch 2.16 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo?

I have been reading in the forum and have noticed that some of the MBP C2D have a few problems (wireless, screen, etc). I just want a list of things to look for if I get one. I have learned from the past to get it fixed fast, or else Apple does not prioritize it as well. Thank you.

    got mine in october.
imo(and other pc converts as well) it hardly lives up to the hype+pricetag.
First/second/third iteration...it runs hot and slow.
Compared to what? Any other macs? Can't say. Compared to my experiences with other pc notebooks...that's where I'm coming from.
Author was looking for feedback from MBP owners.
    2cents submitted.
Author didnt specify..'issues with MBP as compared to other Apple computers', I don't think anyway.
A company makes a major shift with it's hardware, and expects the software that pre-exists will smoothly transition...is a rush job if you ask me.
I just feel it would have been better, having been released with a FULLY compatible os.
    cheers
