Imp chars

trying to import data to using command "imp blabla.dmp". Weird chars appear on screen. Unreadable character. Is there a way to change import steps chars to English?
PS It's my first time installing and using oracle since 2003

imp blabla.mdbmdb isn't a MSAccess file extension ?
Please take a look in the documentation corresponding to the used version http://docs.oracle.com for the import command utility.
O if you want to move from Access to Oracle, you may want to read some docs about Migration Workbench.

  • How to use char in the return type

    in JAVA how to define a NULL charactor???It depends what you mean. char is a primitive, and so it cannot have a value of null. If you need a value of null, you could use a Character, rather than char.
    On the other hand, if you mean "the null character"--the char whose bits are all zero--then char ch = '\0';Edit: Oh, yeah, a simple 0 as DrLJ suggested will work too.

  • Exp/imp, convertion from byte to char.

    Hi,
    I have a dump file exported from a database with nls_lenght_sematics=BYTES. When i import it into a database with nls_lenght_sematics=CHAR, it is retaining the BYTE charecteristics. Is there any way to change it into CHAR while importing. This for globalization support.
    Thanks
    Muneer

    Hi Muneer,
    No, import always preserve the LENGTH semantics of the original columns.
    The workaround is to create your schema objects in the traget database first, with the desired semantics, prior to the importing the data.

  • How to fix this error: IMP-00003: ORACLE error 1435 encountered

    Hello,
    I am new to oracle database. I am trying import a data dump file *.dmp into my test database. I am using Oracle Database 11g. I have created "datatest" to be the user and I granted all possible rights that was there. :) but still getting this error message.
    Does Oracle has a GUI tool somewhere I can try or how I can fix this issue? PLEASE HELP.

    Yes it's probably due to different char sets
    A way around it it to change the DB setup on the new database to use CHAR as default for varchar2 rows, and then use datapump to do your import/export, because datapump uses the default varchar2 type when creating tables that includes varchar2 (which is normally byte). Exp/imp uses the varchar2 type that is in the original database
    Best regards

  • IMP-00017-ORACLE error 1012

    Hi,
    in 8.1.7 I want importe a table then I have this error :
    import done in WE8DEC character set and WE8DEC NCHAR character set^C
    IMP-00017: following statement failed with ORACLE error 1012:
    "CREATE TABLE "TRAILOCC" ("TO_REF" NUMBER(12, 0), "TO_ENTITY" CHAR(40), "TO_"

    "1 MAXTRANS 255 NOLOGGING STORAGE(INITIAL 723025920 FREELISTS 1 FREELIST GRO"
    "UPS 1) TABLESPACE "PROD_DATA""
    Can I then create this table TRAILOCC with INITIAL 223025920 and then importe the table ?
    What should I add in imp command to importe just data since table is already created ?
    Many thanks

    hi
    cmd> imp ignore=y
    hope this helps
    Tajcheck the prod_data tablespace has enough space

  • Imp ignores NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTIC

    Hi all,
    I am trying to convert my database (already in AL32UTF8) from byte to char semantics:
    1. exp full=y
    2. alter system set NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTIC=CHAR scope=both; restart of DB
    3. imp show=y shows me the create statements like "create table t1(name varchar2(10));" (no explicit CHAR nor BYTE)
    Manually pasting this statement in sqlplus gives me a table with CHAR semantics (as expected). Yet, the import with imp creates the tables with byte semantics ignoring the NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTIC=CHAR.
    Now given that I have a few hundred tables to convert, I do not want to do the manual pasting thing. What am I missing? I have searched the net and the docs but cannot find what I am doing wrong. What is the suggested way of modifying the length semantics of existing columns (except for alter table modify... for each table)?
    Thanks a lot for your help, Chris

    I guess you try to import an Oracle8i or older import file. The Import utility will implicitly set NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS to BYTE when importing pre-9i files.
    The Import utility is explicitly designed to preserve the original length semantics of the exported tables. It is not designed to be used as length semantics migration utility.
    You can try the INDEXFILE option of the Import utility to get a SQL script. You will have to do some postprocessing to remove comments for CREATE TABLE statements.

  • NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS = CHAR import is too slow

    I am converting a database from its current character set WE8ISO88591 to AL32UTF8
    I am using NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS to CHAR so I do not have to increase column lengths.
    I follow Oracle instructions:
    144808.1
    313175.1
    Except import which takes way too long.
    I took a full export of WE8ISO8859p1 Database and now importing it in AL32UTF8.
    It is always difficult to prove where the slowness is coming from; but I think it has to do something with NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS. On the same
    server; if new database was in WE8ISO8859P1, a 5 million row table import took 2 hours; but in Al32UTF8 with NLS_LENGTH_SEMANTICS it is taking 1 day!!!
    Any idea how to improve the performance of import.

    11.1.0.7 on HP UNIX 11.2
    exp system/$SPSWD file=$PIPE_NAME log=$TLOGFILE consistent=Y \
    full=yes constraints=y compress=N statistics=NONE
    I fist did imp with rows=N so all the table/sindexes were created without any data. Then I had to run several alter statements to set charactersistics of
    imp system/$SPSWD file=$PIPE_NAME log=$TLOGFILE \
    fromuser=maximo touser=maximo buffer=10000000 rows=N commit=y ignore=Y constraints=y >> $LOGFILE 2>
    &1
    Then I had to run several alter statements to set charactersistics of NLS_LENEGTH_SEMANTICS to CHAR as per metalink notes..
    imp system/$SPSWD file=$PIPE_NAME log=$TLOGFILE \
    fromuser=xxxxx touser=xxxxx buffer=10000000 commit=y ignore=Y constraints=y

  • Table sizing is bigger after imp

    Hi all,

    What happend? Can anyone help me?
    Thanks for advance.

    It doesn't 'imporve' the performance at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Dictionary managed tablespaces are a thing of the past, remember!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 10g Host command imp.exe not working

    Hi,
    Just created a relatively simple form that uses host command.
    I create a sql script using text_io to create a new user.
    I then use host to run that script on the app server.
    All this works fine.
    Then i use host command to try and import into the db. This is when it does nothing.
    I have cut it down to bear bones and a button with the command:
    host('D:\oracle\database\BIN\imp.exe LOG=D:\test.log');This doesnt even create the log "test.log"
    If i copy and paste this into the run box on the app server the log is created?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    hi
    first try to import by using dos go to start,run and cmd something like this.
    c:\Imp user/pass@orcl file=c:\file.dmp log=c:\log_name.log full=y
    What is import/export and why does one need it?
    Oracle's export (exp) and import (imp) utilities are used to perform logical database backup and recovery. When exporting, database objects are dumped to a binary file which can then be imported into another Oracle database.
    These utilities can be used to move data between different machines, databases or schema. However, as they use a proprietary binary file format, they can only be used between Oracle databases. One cannot export data and expect to import it into a non-Oracle database.
    Various parameters are available to control what objects are exported or imported. To get a list of available parameters, run the exp or imp utilities with the help=yes parameter.
    The export/import utilities are commonly used to perform the following tasks:
    Backup and recovery (small databases only, say < +50GB, if bigger, use RMAN instead)
    Move data between Oracle databases on different platforms (for example from Solaris to Windows)
    Reorganization of data/ eliminate database fragmentation (export, drop and re-import tables)
    Upgrade databases from extremely old versions of Oracle (when in-place upgrades are not supported by the Database Upgrade Assistant any more)
    Detect database corruption. Ensure that all the data can be read
    Transporting tablespaces between databases
    Etc.
    From Oracle 10g, users can choose between using the old imp/exp utilities, or the newly introduced Datapump utilities, called expdp and impdp. These new utilities introduce much needed performance improvements, network based exports and imports, etc.
    NOTE: It is generally advised not to use exports as the only means of backing-up a database. Physical backup methods (for example, when you use RMAN) are normally much quicker and supports point in time based recovery (apply archivelogs after recovering a database). Also, exp/imp is not practical for large database environments.
    [edit] How does one use the import/export utilities?
    Look for the "imp" and "exp" executables in your $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory. One can run them interactively, using command line parameters, or using parameter files. Look at the imp/exp parameters before starting. These parameters can be listed by executing the following commands: "exp help=yes" or "imp help=yes".
    The following examples demonstrate how the imp/exp utilities can be used:
    exp scott/tiger file=emp.dmp log=emp.log tables=emp rows=yes indexes=no
    exp scott/tiger file=emp.dmp tables=(emp,dept)
    imp scott/tiger file=emp.dmp full=yes
    imp scott/tiger file=emp.dmp fromuser=scott touser=scott tables=dept
    Using a parameter file:
    exp userid=scott/tiger@orcl parfile=export.txt
    ... where export.txt contains:
    BUFFER=10000000
    FILE=account.dmp
    FULL=n
    OWNER=scott
    GRANTS=y
    COMPRESS=y
    NOTE: If you do not like command line utilities, you can import and export data with the "Schema Manager" GUI that ships with Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM).
    [edit] Can one export a subset of a table?
    From Oracle 8i one can use the QUERY= export parameter to selectively unload a subset of the data from a table. You may need to escape special chars on the command line, for example: query=\"where deptno=10\". Look at these examples:
    exp scott/tiger tables=emp query="where deptno=10"
    exp scott/tiger file=abc.dmp tables=abc query=\"where sex=\'f\'\" rows=yes--------------------------
    You can also use DBMS_DATAPUMP.
    For example, you can start the export job from a PL/SQL package with the following PL/SQL code:
    declare
        handle  number;
    begin
        handle := dbms_datapump.open('EXPORT','SCHEMA');
        dbms_datapump.add_file(handle,'SCOTT3.DMP','DUMPDIR');
        dbms_datapump.metadata_filter(handle,'SCHEMA_EXPR','= ''SCOTT''');
        dbms_datapump.set_parallel(handle,4);
        dbms_datapump.start_job(handle);
        dbms_datapump.detach(handle);
    end;

  • How can I select the last 2 chars of a string

    Hello all,
    I am trying to select the last 2 characters of a string to match them to another string. This is for a Poem generator that contains 20 or so words and I have to pick 2 words at random, them look at the last 2 characters to see if they match in each string. Say "Plain" and "Rain" would match because they both have "in" at the end. The length of each word could vary. I don't want this doing for me just what Method should I be looking at.
    Thanks.

    hi,
    try this:
    public class StringTest {
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              StringTest obj = new StringTest();
              obj.same();
         void same() {
              String rain = new String("Rain");
              String plain = new String("Plain");
              int rainLength = rain.length();
              int plainLength = plain.length();
              if(rain.substring(rainLength-2).equals(plain.substring(plainLength-2))) {
                   System.out.println("same");
              else {
                   System.out.println("different");
    }you can use the length method to get the length of a string and then use the substring method, passing it length-2, so get the last 2 chars.

  • Convert Char to float

    Hi all,
    Am wanting to convert a char value (the infoobject is defined as NUMC) into float in order to perform a calculation in the FOX formula. It would not allow the char value to be stored into a float variable...comes back wz an error message - Types of operands F and <infoobject_numc> do not agree.
    Any ways of doing this? I thought about using a function to perform the conversion from char to float format but dont knw if such a function exists on the BI system?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    I sometimes use a local variable of type STRING to pass on values to other data types:
    DATA local type STRING.
    local = A.
    B = local.
    But I'm not sure it will work for you. If not, you can do it with an exit function.
