Impact of new column addition to existing database

Hi,
I have a business reqt where in the existing table, I have to add a new column. Yet it is not finalised whether the column is going to be nullalble or NOT NULL.
But I would need a help to judge where all the addition of new column in the existing Db can cause a impact.
I know few things but need to know the complete picture:
1. dependent SP's would get invalidated ( specially with INSERT statement)
2.
3...
..and all those.
Please help.
Regards,
Aashish S.

As Satish pointed out the locking issue - I once saw someone lock up a whole application for hours because they added a new column with a default value on a large table because that took a DDL level lock on the table.
Also, if people have coded their inserts properly (using column names and values) then you should not have any problems with the order of column names even though the column is added to the end, unless you use DBMS_REDEFINITION.

  • Need to add 2 new columns to the existing table control of C223 transaction

    Hi ABAP Gurus,
    I have to do a screen enhancement for transaction C223.
    Below is the requirement:
    need to add 2 new columns to the existing table control of C223 transaction.
    there is no customer exits, screen exit or user exit present for this transaction C223, i have found one enhancement spot for this transaction.
    i dont have any idea how to do this in standard transaction C223, the table control in C223 saves the data to MKAL table and the table control uses the structure MKAL_EXPAND in the screen program.
    i have created an append structure for  the 2 fields to the standard table MKAL.
    Can anyone please suggest me how this can be done in standard screen C223, will the enhancement spot can be used to do this....
    please sugest...
    Thanks & Regards

    Hi Santosh,
    Thanks for the reply. I have looked into this Enhancement Spot CPFX_SCREEN_SET , inside this there is only one method INPUT_DISABLED having below parameters
    IM_MKAL     Importing     Type     MKAL                                                                                Production Version

    the BADI definition present here is a SAP internal so we cant implement the BADI , but we can created a enhancement spot implementation for this. as per my understanding on this the enhancement spot is only for making the table control fields display / change .  i dont think this can be used to add two new coloumns to C223 table control.
    I am not sure thats why seeking your help/valuable sugestion on this.
    Please provide your sugestion on this , so that i can come to conclusion on this issue.

    I.E) USING AFTER OR BEFORE IN ALTER TABLE SYNTAX.There's no such option, and to be honest there's no real need to do it as Oracle doesn't care what order the columns are in, and you can select out the columns in your queries in whatever order you want. You could use the DBMS_REDEFINITION package (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14258/d_redefi.htm) but unless you're really struggling then that's perhaps a little bit over the top. The simplest way if you really feel you need to do it is to create a new table based on the existing one with your new column in it and selecting the data into it at the same time...
    create newtable as
    select id, name, cast(null as varchar2(10)) as newcolumn, job, status from tableA;and then drop the original table and rename the new one...
    drop table tableA;
    rename newtable to tableA;of course you would need to recreate any constraints, indexes, triggers etc., and it could be problematic if you have foreign keys etc. but you have to weigh up what you are wanting to do and why you really need to put a new column in the middle of other columns rather than just putting it on the end.

  • Adding new column in an existing report which was build using Union

    While working in OBIEE 11g I encounter an issue.
    My existing report was build using UNION at Criteria Tab in Analysis. Now I have a requirement to add a new column into the same report. For each criteria I have added the new column but when I go back to the "Result Columns". I see a new field added but it is not allowing me to open or edit column properties for that new column & at the same time it is not allowing me to navigate to other tabs like Results, Promts, and Advanced.
    I don’t want to build this report from scratch. Is there any workaround to get it resolved?

    Hi,
    Just check it once the new added column data types are mismatched or not?
    and the new added column should be navigated into excluded section, so u should edit the report and dragged into the table column section.
    Thanks..

    Hi,
    You can add the following lines of code where-ever  you want to add the table:
        IWDTransparentContainer tr = (IWDTransparentContainer) viewObj.getElement("trans");  // Container where table will be added
         IWDTable tab = (IWDTable) viewObj.createElement(IWDTable.class ,"Table ID");
         tr.addChild(tab);
         IWDNodeInfo nodeInfo = wdContext.nodeProducts().getNodeInfo();
         tab.bindDataSource(nodeInfo); // datasource of your table.
         // First Column
         IWDTableColumn tc1 = (IWDTableColumn) viewObj.createElement(IWDTableColumn.class, "TC1");
         IWDCaption cap1 = (IWDCaption) viewObj.createElement(IWDCaption.class,"cap1");
         cap1.setText("Column Heading 1"); // name1 of your column
         tc1.setHeader(cap1);
         IWDInputField inp1 = (IWDInputField) viewObj.createElement(IWDInputField.class,"INP1");
         tc1.setTableCellEditor(inp1);
         IWDAttributeInfo attrInfo1 = wdContext.nodeProducts().getNodeInfo().getAttribute(IPrivateTEST.IProductsElement.PRODUCT_ID);
         inp1.bindValue(attrInfo1);
         tab.addColumn(tc1);
         // Second Column
         IWDTableColumn tc2 = (IWDTableColumn) viewObj.createElement(IWDTableColumn.class, "TC2");
         IWDCaption cap2 = (IWDCaption) viewObj.createElement(IWDCaption.class,"cap2");
         cap2.setText("Column Heading 2");
         tc2.setHeader(cap2);
         IWDInputField inp2 = (IWDInputField) viewObj.createElement(IWDInputField.class,"INP2");
         tc2.setTableCellEditor(inp2);
         IWDAttributeInfo attrInfo2 = wdContext.nodeProducts().getNodeInfo().getAttribute(IPrivateTEST.IProductsElement.NAME);
         inp2.bindValue(attrInfo2);
         tab.addColumn(tc2);
         // Third Column
         IWDTableColumn tc3 = (IWDTableColumn) viewObj.createElement(IWDTableColumn.class, "TC3");
         IWDCaption cap3 = (IWDCaption) viewObj.createElement(IWDCaption.class,"cap3");
         cap3.setText("Column Heading 3");
         tc3.setHeader(cap3);
         IWDInputField inp3 = (IWDInputField) viewObj.createElement(IWDInputField.class,"INP3");

  • Appraisal Template - Issue with New Column addition.

    We have added one column u201CPriority %u201D which replaced an existing field (column) in one of the appraisal templates.
    When the user selects a value from the drop down and saves the template, it is not getting reflected in the portal.  Also the same isnu2019t getting updated in the backend DB tables (as seen from PHAP_ADMIN_PA). Upon displaying the template, the first available value in the drop down is shown by default instead of the selected value.
    As per our understanding the entire field values are read from standard function Module u2018HRHAP_DOCUMENT_CHANGE_STATUSu2019 into corresponding internal table t_body_elements.
    But the value (Row X Column) for that particular column is not seen in the structure.
    Please give inputs as to why the changed % value is not being saved and shown in the template.
    The column is maintained in the template like the other columns and the value range is also maintained in the u2018Edit Appraisal Scalesu2019 in SPRO.

    Hello Siddharth,
    Thanks for you reply. Still the same issue. Following are the config I did till now:
    In the PCD I created a new business object (SWF_WIOBN), an operation linked to the object (NAVIGATE).
    I did create an iView (powl) in the custom folder, I integrated the operation within iView. I created a page that contains the iView.
    In the properties of the iView I gave:
    Application Name: HAP_MAIN_DOCUMENT.
    Launch in New Window: "Display in separate Headerless Portal Window".
    System: SAP_ECC_HumanResources
    I added the required entries in tables:
    IBO_C_WF_TTAS
    IBO_C_WF_ACS
    IBO_V_WF_TAC
    IBO_V_WF_TTAC
    etc...
    I saw in the code of linked feeder class: CL_IBO_INBOX_FEEDER_WI  that it's checking something called "Launch_Editor".. Is it a property that we can set somewhere?
    Following are the parameters retrieved by system:
    BO_NAME       =  SWF_WIOBN
    BO_OP_NAME = NAVIGATE
    LAUNCHER_PARAMETERS ->  empty.??
    BO_RESOLVE_MODE = USER_SET_OF_ROLES
    LAUNCH_EDITOR  empty where must be set?
    At the end I still get the error:
    There is no iView available for system "": object "SWF_WIOBN". For more information, contact your administrator.
    Any advice,
    Thanks in advance

  • Addition of New Column

    I would like to know is it possible to add a new column/Drop an existing column from a existing table with huge data in Oracle 8i.
    Thanx in ADV
    GSR

    Yes you can do both operations. Use the following commands
    ALTER TABLE <tablename> ADD for adding cols
    ALTER TABLE <tablename> DROP COLUMN for dropping columns.

  • Best approach to publish new table or new column on existing table on MDW?

    Hi,
    I'm refering to Olite R3 without any patches. I don't use Java API, I use MDW.
    if I have a new table or a new column on a existing table, what's the best approach to publish it?
    I'm asking this because I've trying lots of approaches and the only solution was, step-by-step:
    1) On MDW, drop the publication item
    2) Add again the publication item
    3) Associate the publication item to the publication
    4) Save everything
    5) File / Deploy (if I don't do it, it does not work)
    6) Tools/Package... (that's where it's a problem: if I don't remove the app and create it again it does not work!)
    7) on the client side, I perform a msync with "force refresh"
    That's the only way I found to publish new items for sure. Any other action does not push the new table or new column to the client's embbeded DB.
    Any comments?
    Regards,
    Maurício Américo Vernaschi.

    I do not use MDW, rather a mix of java and the final publish step you use, but
    Adding new PIs should be easy, just add them and re-publish (no need to drop anything)
    for changes, if you just have new columns and the sql statement is 'select * from' then you should just need to make the changes in the base schema objects, and run the publish with no changes and the updates should be picked up. If selecting specific columns, then update and re-publish.
    When using MDW at the end you can save the application as a jar file, and then use this jar file to publish in the mobile manager - this is the best wayto publish.
    Have a look at this jar file in winzip, and you will find it contains a web.xml file. This is the xml definition of the publication items, and for simple changes it is possible to just edit this file and republish via the mobile manager

  • Query to add a column in between existing cols of a table?

    HI All,
    I have two questions.
    1. Query to add a column in between existing cols of a table? (not at the end. This is view of an order of output fields in a report)
    2. How do I swap the contents of two columns in a table. Suppose in a table tab there are 2 cols , col1,col2 populated with some data.
    I need a query(probably) to swap the col1 and col2 values . NOT AS A RESULT SET, BUT IT NEEDS TO GET CHANGED IN THE TABLE.
    Please help !

    > 1. Query to add a column in between existing cols of
    a table? (not at the end. This is view of an order of
    output fields in a report)
    Not really sensible ito DBMS - it does not care how you want to view the data. The sequence and formats of columns are what you/the application need to specify in the SQL's projection clause.
    Also keep in mind to achieve this, the DBMS will need to rewrite the entire table to fit this new column in-between existing columns. This is not the best of ideas.
    The projection of rows is dealt with SQL statements - not with the physical storage implementation.
    > 2. How do I swap the contents of two columns in a

  • How add new column in analysis from two subject area

    which is the right way to add a new column to an existing combined analysis from two subject areas?
    if I add the new column first in my two combined queries, then I saw a new column in the results column panel, but this new column is empty and I can't edit its propreties (the button edit column doesn't work). I can't even save the modified analysis due to a "bad xml" errror.
    if I try to first add a new column from the results panel and then in my combined queries, obiee says that new columns are not of the same type.
    I suppose this is because the new column in results panel has no aggregation formula, unlike new columns in queries.
    But I don't know how to change the properties of the new field in the results panel, with no subject area available.
    I have to restart from a single subject area? possible?
    In this case, there is a way to save/copy filters ecc. from the old analysis?
    If anyone can help.
    Thanks
    Luc

    When you are using union clause in analysis or combining with other subject area you suppose to have same number of columns and their datatypes with other analysis.
    for datatype issues you can use cast in column expression in each analysis. If you want to add a column only from 1 analysis just add and in other analysis use dummy column with exp 0 or ''(for char) based on the datatype.
    These you have to deal with each analysis.

  • The new column designed not appears in the form

    Dear All Gurus/Experts,
    I created new column directly in the database stored in the SQL server 2000,in table IGN1, right click --> select design table, then right click --> insert column, I write U_copqty, numeric data type, 9 is its length and allow nulls check mark.
    I can't understand why the field is not appeared in the form settings like other columns so that I can thick and make it appear in the form IGN1 (receipt from production). I have read development training files but I am confusing if it is really need VB.net to do that. I also know about user defined field but it doesn't what I need because I have created UDF in the production order row but I can't find it in the receipt from production form, so I just did create the new field/column directly in its database but I fail to make it appear in the form settings when I need it to be available in the receipt from production form. would you pls help me ? I appreciate your answer. TIA
    Rgds,
    Steve

    Hello Steve,
    The reason you can not see the directly added field is because that there is another table CUFD which holds all the User Defined Field information. So, you need to add a new record in that table. However, the approach is really not SAP recommended. Directly handling database could be very risky. Please create the user defined field according to the steps.
    Regarding why you can not view the field you created, did you create a row or document level field?
    Hope this helps,
    Nick
