java.lang.Serializable Interface?
And in general for these Interfaces (Somewhere called
Marker Interface), how does the implementation
applies?
How do they distinguish from other Interfaces?
The Serializable interface is a marker interface because it doesn't require the programmer to implement any methods whasoever, so the syntax:
class MyClass implements Serializable { }
is perfectly legal.
This just tells the compiler that al objects of type MyClass will be serializable. No class provides the implementations for readObject() and writeObject(), you'll have to do that yourself. Or, more exactly, it is (strongly) recommended to do that, if you want to control what is and isn't serialized (you may have sensitive members in your class, that you don't want to be serialized!)
Ok, these 2 methods are defined somewhere (I don't have the Java Serialization specification with me right now :( ), you have to implement them to give you better control of what's going on. Inside these methods you'l want to use the readObject() and writeObject() methods of other types).
I'll come back later with a full example.
Yuo may want ot check out the Java Serialization Specification (available for download on the Sun website)

  • A Bean must implement the java.io.Serializable interface? What makes the di

    Hi, I have took an example from sun notes on JavaBeans (you can find the example here http://java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/Beans/beans02/page2.html). The code is like this.....
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.io.Serializable;
    public class SimpleBean extends Canvas
                     implements Serializable {
      private Color color = Color.green;
      //getter method
      public Color getColor() {
         return color;
      //setter method
      public void setColor(Color newColor) {
         color = newColor;
         repaint();
      //override paint method
      public void paint (Graphics g) {
         g.setColor(color);
         g.fillRect(20,5,20,30);
      //Constructor: sets inherited properties
      public SimpleBean() {
         setSize(60,40);
         setBackground(Color.red);
    }I didn't find any difference in executing the program by implementing the Serializable interface and without implementing. On choosing serialize component in the File Menu, I serialized the component after changing its color (property), and saved as .ser file. And created the .Jar file including .ser file. when I load the jar file and place the bean in the beanbox, it is showing the bean that is updated. This can be done by implemeting Serializable interface and without implementing Serializable interface also. And I have a statement that has been given in the notes provided by SUN. That is ' Bean must implement the Serializable interface. Objects that support this interface can save and restore their state from disk '. I couldnot come up with the summation of this statement.
    Anyone who has an idea... please give an explanation.
    Thank you.

    Maybe you should show us your coding how you saved your beans state.
    Are you serious that you save the special object? Or do you save the values of the object into a file and load those values into a new object?

  • Design patterns implemented in java API

    Hi,
    I have some questions on design patterns implemented in core java class or in general in java API.
    1)Whether
    java.util.Collections, the checkedXXX(), synchronizedXXX() and unmodifiableXXX() methods.
    can be considered as a decorator pattern?
    2) Whether
    LinkedHashMap(LinkedHashSet<K>, List<V>) which returns an unmodifiable linked map which doesn't clone the items, but uses them
    can be considered as a Bridge pattern?
    3) Whether Facade pattern is implemented in java ? If so which API uses it?
    4) Whether
    •     All non-abstract methods of java.io.InputStream, java.io.OutputStream, java.io.Reader and java.io.Writer.
    •     All non-abstract methods of java.util.AbstractList, java.util.AbstractSet and java.util.AbstractMap
    can be considered as a Template method pattern?
    5) Whether
    •     java.util.Comparator#compare(), executed by among others Collections#sort()
    can be considered as a Stratergy pattern?
    6)
    Whether State pattern is implemented in java ? If so which API uses it?
    7)
    All implementations of java.lang.Runnable are considered as a Command pattern.
    8)
    Whether
    •     java.io.InputStreamReader(InputStream) (returns a Reader)
    •     java.io.OutputStreamWriter(OutputStream) (returns a Writer)
    can be considered as an Adapter pattern?
    Please clarify.
    Thanks.

  • Is java.lang.href.* dependable?

    I met a problem which depressed me so much. I wrote a web application with java.lang.href.SoftReference. In fact I wrote a memory sensitive cache tool.
    It runs, with problem. The problem is that at the begining it runs exactly as I had expected. But when I increase the test pressure, I launched more threads to test it, it crashed. it throws no exception, nor any error. The java process is not die, but refuse to work. I synchronized every possible place that would cause problem, but problem still comes. I changed the J2SDK version and test it again and again, it still crash. So I wonder if anyone has met the same or similiar problem on java.lang.href.SoftReference. Is it dependable?

    I suppose you mean java.lang.ref.*. If your application runs well single-threaded and fails multi-threaded, I would think you have a threading bug in your code.
    Is it dependable? I've never heard anyone else complain about it. We've used it from time to time, and parts of the JDK itself are implemented using java.lang.ref.* stuff, so it's probably very well tested.

  • Webservice Client implementation -  java.lang.ClassCastException

    Hi,
    We are trying to implement a WebService Client for the secure Webservice. I have created a deployable proxy client and deployed it on the server, our basis has attached the X509 certificate to the proxy in VA. Test Destination is successful. I have exposed the client as public part in the ws client dc project.I have created a used dc relationship to the webservice client project in my EP Component project.  I'm trying to use this client in a AbstractPortal component with following code
         SECQANDA seq = (SECQANDA) ctx.lookup("<JNDI location");
    I get a ClassCastException on this line
    java.lang.ClassCastException: <package>.SECQANDAImpl incompatible with <package>.SECQANDA
    Have anyone faced this problem? How do I resolve this error?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Giri.

    Hi Martin,
    Appreciate your response. I'm not able to cast to SECQANDAImpl because this implementaion class is not in my DC. What I understand is it gets implemented on deployment of the deployable proxy. Does that ring any bell?
    Thanks,
    Giri.

  • Is there any bug in java.lang.String literal implementation

    Consider the following program:
    class StringTest
         public static void main(String[] args)
              long freeMemInitially=Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory();
              String s="Amarnath";
              //char data[] = {'A', 'm', 'a','r','n','a','t','h'};
         //String s = new String(data);
              long usedMemAfterFirstString=freeMemInitially-Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory();
              System.out.println("usedMemAfterFirstString:= "+usedMemAfterFirstString);
    Run the program it will return 0. But why? As the java docs and java specification says that string litterals is the reference to the instance of java.lang.String object.Then where does this string have been saved except the java runtime heap?
    Message was edited by:
    Amarnath_Bhattacharya

    basically, the simple explanation is this:
    the string literal "usedMemAfterFirstString" and the string literal "Amarnath" are both instantiated BEFORE the main method is called.
    hence, no object creation is done between the first and second invocations of Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory().
    If you take a closer look at the spec, it will confirm this.

  • Java.lang.ClassCastException serializing EJB

    The Remote interface extends java.io.Serializable, and the Bean Class implement this interface (obviously). All fields in the Bean implementation class are also Serializable.
    I don't know why casting to com.evermind.server.rmi.RemoteInvocationHandler fails for this EJB, and I don't know if is the expected behavior.
    Any ideas?

    I'm getting this exception while passing an EJB as a method parameter.
    RMI Exception passing by to client
    java.lang.ClassCastException: com.evermind.server.rmi.RemoteInvocationHandler
    at com.evermind.server.ejb.EJBOutputStream.replaceEJBObject(EJBOutputStream.java:53)
    at com.evermind.server.ejb.EJBOutputStream.replaceObject(EJBOutputStream.java:25)
    at java.io.ObjectOutputStream.writeObject(ObjectOutputStream.java:318)
    The Remote interface extends java.io.Serializable, and the Bean Class implement this interface (obviously). All fields in the Bean implementation class are also Serializable.
    I don't know why casting to com.evermind.server.rmi.RemoteInvocationHandler fails for this EJB, and I don't know if is the expected behavior.
    Any ideas?

  • Java.lang.reflect.InnvokationTargetException

    Hello everybody,
    I am getting following error logs while executing my swing application.
    java.lang.reflect.InnvokationTargetException
    at sun.reflect.delegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke
    (DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.java:25)
    at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Mehod:java:324)
    I am trying to call some class's method using reflection principle.
    All values of acces modifier, return type, method name, args are correct at run time. I don't understand why i am getting this error.
    Can anybody please help me.
    Thanks and regards
    Girish Varde

    I would say that this sentence is rather confusing since you get the exception nonetheless.The sentence means when I am in debug mode and check value of the actual class whose method is called, the class value is correct. It's not that the class whose method I am calling does not exist.
    First I give the reference error log which you can use to locate at what point the exception is thrown.

    this is coming  when i m accessing this method:
    class BallServerImpl extends UnicastRemoteObject
    implements BallServer
    * @return an enumeration of all Balls as proxy objects
    public Ball[] getAllBallProxies() throws java.rmi.RemoteException
         Ball[] locations1 = new Ball[hash.size()];
    java.util.Enumeration iter = hash.elements();
    int idx = 0;
    while (iter.hasMoreElements())
         BallImpl impl = (BallImpl)iter.nextElement();
    locations1[idx++] = new BallProxy(impl);
    return locations1;
    why this function is running fine when i m calling this from client unlike getAllBallProxies() nevertheless both are returning the same thing:
    * @return an enumeration of all Balls as remote references
    public Ball[] getAllBalls()
         Ball[] locations = new Ball[hash.size()];
    java.util.Enumeration iter = hash.elements();
    int idx = 0;
    while (iter.hasMoreElements())
    locations[idx++] = (Ball)iter.nextElement();
    return locations;
    the proxy Class:
    * The Proxybouncing ball.
    public class BallProxy implements Serializable,Ball {
    * The Real bouncing ball.
    public class BallImpl extends UnicastRemoteObject implements IBallRemote,Serializable

    that there was some thread there in BallProxy but i removed all from them and now testingIf you don't post the code people ask to see, you may never get a useful answer here.
    P.S i didn't know that threads are not SerializedThe Thread class is not Serializable. Precision please.
    Now i m updating the code, i needed the confirmationConfirmation of what?
    and now trying to avoid them.Them?
    But what if i need them.Them?
    Please make the effort to express yourself clearly. You've already been told you're not making much sense and you haven't done anything about it.
    how can we make serialized?The concept of serializing a Thread makes no sense whatsoever. You don't want to do it. You don't need to do it. You can't do it. It wouldn't work if you could do it.
    Somewhere or other you have a class member that is a reference to a Thread. Remove it or make it transient. If you post the code somebody may help you. If you don't, nobody can possibly do that.

    Thanks for your response. I found that, when I copied the shared library to /usr/lib and
    did: ldconfig -n /usr/lib it worked
    But the problem is, this is my computer, but the computers that I am going to run my actual
    JNI application, have restrictive permission. Could anyone please let me know how I can
    do the work without ldconfig. I mean is there anyway I can configure my .so file's path without
    copying it into the /usr/lib folder and without ldconfig?
    I will appreciate any reply. Thanks.

  • Web Service From Java class, serialization problem

    Hi,
    I want to create Web Service from Java class, I made java project, generated web service from it, create web service archive project and deployed it to WAS 6.40.
    My class have 2 methods,
    public int add(int a, int b);
    public MyResponse doSomthing(MyRequest req);
    I can succesfully call add method from Web Service Navigator, it works fine but when I call doSomthing methods I get the following error:
    <b>
    Deserializing fails. Nested message: XML Deserialization Error. Result class [com.mycomp.sap_tech.ws.MyRequest] does not have property [Amount] of type [java.lang.String]. It is required to load XML..
    </b>
    Any ideas how to resolve it?
    P.S. MyRequest class is exposed throw VI, has default constractor and public getters and setters for all properties. It implements Serializable as well. Any guesses?
    Thanks in advance,
    Victor.

    Hi Bhavik, thanks for response.
    as I already mentioned it implements Serializable, so it is not the problem.
    Thanks Avi but it didn't helps iether
