Import animated model in after effects

Hello guys.I was wandering if there is a way to import a 3d model that was animated in programs like 3ds max an so.I mean not just rotation and possition but animated some part of the object also.e.g if it is a humman then he have to have animated hands. Thanks in advance and if there is something that u didnt understand , feel free to ask plsease.

I already have some pretty good 3D applications that can output OBJ and DXF amongst others (also FBX).  Do I really need to buy Zaxwerks JUST to import my OBJ into After Effects CS6?  In previous versions I could export an OBJ to Photoshop Extended and then import that as a 3D layer into AE (I just saw a tutorial on it) But I just learned that that functionality has been removed from AE CS6.  So what do I do now to get a 3D model into AE as a 3D layer?  I don't necessarily want to render everything from the 3D application as stills.  I would like to try to use AE's cameras so that I can integrate other AE layers with my 3D objects.
Or should I just stick to the old guns and do everything in the 3D application and render as stills?

  • How can I add 3ds Model into After Effects with animation and camera rotation?

    Hi all!
I'm on my way to my final project of Multimedia Animation of my bachelor last year.
I have good knowledge of After Effects & 3ds Max.
I want to do a short movie with aliens being shot down.
So, my question is: How can I import my 3ds model with the animation(keyframes) into After Effects AND rotate the whole character and it's animation as I move the camera?
for example, having a alien being shot down at the same time I'm recording with the HD camera around, that means that I have to define planes and angles, the problem is that I'm not parenting the character correctly with the plane.

Element doesn't do pre-anaimted objects, so that would be the limiting factor. Of course it could still be handy for otehr scene elements. On that note, using AtomKraft and exporting the model as an Alembic file with animation might also be something to look into...

  • Animated Textures for 3D models in After Effects CS4

I'm working on a project and i was wondering if After Effeccts cs4 supported animated textured for 3D models. I've been making the model in Blender, exporting it as a .obj, opening it in photoshop, and making it into a .psd file. Then i import the .psd inot after effects. I can get textures, but i cant get any animated textures to work.

I can get textures, but i cant get any animated textures to work.
Well, that would require PS to support animated textures in the first place, would it not? And it simply doesn't. That asisde it's a pretty nonsensical workflow - whatever you are trying to do by hopping between 3 programs could probably be done easily in Blender's comp/ shading tree with direct access to texture data, render passes and all that. Realyl. For everything else you might wanan check this old article of mine to get an idea about a workflow that actually makes sense and plays out the benefits of working with render passes...

  • Problem integrating other objects with a 3D model in After Effects

    Hello there!
SO HERE'S WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO
For the intro to an episode of my webshow I wanted to have the camera come up from behind the couch (the current movement is a bit berserk but that's another issue) and have it come up to the television.
As it's coming to the tv, I'd like to have it show static or perhaps some bars, then change to either a series of still images or a video clip (whichever gets the job done) displaying the fake commercial to go with the narration.
Finally, after the commercial is done, the camera is to move so the tv screen fills the frame and then I'll transition to the body of the episode.
WHAT I'VE TRIED (AND SEEN FAIL)
    1) Greenscreening: This is why the tv screen is the color it currently is. This doesn't work, though, since the TV image is static while camera is not and so it's as if the TV frame is shifting wildly around the image put underneath it in another layer in Premiere.
    2) Laying the image over: I tried to brute force it with a layer above the imported Adobe After Effects Composition but even if I could get the camera to sit at a perfect angle for aligning the overlayed image, it only solves my problem for the middle stage (the commercial) - it seems to be impossible (or at least incredibly time consuming) to try and get the overlayed image to align for the first stage where the camera is coming across the room.
    3) Inserting the TV image in the After Effects Composition: Whether I do it as a 2D or 3D image, any still or clip that I want to "play" on the television is always in front of the 3D living room model - though I can move a camera inside the room, I can't move any objects it seems.
Now these are being put in as a new layer above the model and I imagine this is what's screwing things up, but I can't insert them into the model in After Effects (I don't think) and since I have more than one image or clip to display on the tv that makes altering the original .psd file a no-go.
    SOME TECHNICAL DETAILS
The original model can be found here. It started as a Google Sketchup file that was exported as a .dae into Photoshop, then saved as a .psd that could be brought into After Effects.
Software being used is Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop (all CS5) and the latest edition of Google Sketchup.
Any help beyond "BUY SOFTWARE X, YOU FOOL" would be really appreciated! I've been working very hard to up the quality of my show with this latest episode and working out the intro is all that's left to do before rendering and uploading!
    Cheers,
    Oliver

    3) Inserting the TV image in the After Effects Composition: Whether I do it as a 2D or 3D image, any still or clip that I want to "play" on the television is always in front of the 3D living room model - though I can move a camera inside the room, I can't move any objects it seems.
You are misunderstanding Photoshop Live 3D and overestimating its potential, that's why. Just like any other 3D-ish effect (Shatter, Particular, Form, Card Dance etc.) it is a peek through a window in a 3D world, but not AE's own 3D world. There is no interaction beyond the plug-ins and effects responding to the AE camera. That's all it is. The rest must come from within the effect/ plug-in itself, but in this case it doesn't, because PS 3D by itself is lamer than lame. Anyway, long-standing and well known limitations in AE's "3D". Not all is lost, though. If you can work your way around building a UV pass as explained here, you might be able to stick your content into the scene rather seamlessly, after all. And lucky for you, you can  try this for free these days using a PixelBender filter. I'd still recommend the commercial Re:Map because of the quality, though...

  • Import files.mov in After Effects.

    Hi everyone.
I'm coming to you because I have a new problem when I'm importing my files.mov in After Effect cs6.
I use "Toon Boom Studio" to make stickman animation (it's for a project for my school) and when I'm exporting the file, I set 25 fps, 1920x1080 resolution and Apple ProRes 422 compression.
When I'm playing the animation in quicktime, we can see that every parameters are corrects :
But when I import this file in After Effect CS6, a strange thing happened :
The fps of this file is to 26.042 and especially I don't have all the frames of my file. I mean there isn't the last frame of my animation. It seems that my animation was cut at the end. But it isn't when I played it in Quicktime or VLC.
I'm sorry for my english, I hope you will understand me.

    Hello,
You means changes the fps of the file to 26.042 to 25 ? If it's what you are talking about, I already try this, but it still miss the end of my animation.
I create an animation with a stickman of 8 frames, 4 differents :
And when I open it in After Effect, there isn't the last one. And it seems that the first picture last 3 frames in AE instead of 2.

  • How to import transparent gifs in after effects cc

I just upgraded form after effects cs5 to cc and one thing i cant understand is why i cant directly import transparent gifs as i could in cs5. I heard that you have to make a png sequence from fireworks but i dont want to go through all of that. I would appreciate if someonecan tell me how to easily import transparent animated gifs into after effects cc as you could in sc5

You can't and that is that. This stuff used Quicktime components and simply too much has changed. You need to work with image sequences exported from Photoshop or whatever other program based on your GIF.

  • Problem with importing premiere project into after effects

Hi. When I import premiere project into after effects CS4 the files I speed up 2x (for example) look likes on the snapshot below, and they are not in the correct places.
    what can I do?

Then don't speed them up... This is "as designed". AE and Premiere are not compatible in their tiem-remapping/ time-stretching, so tehre is no way to move between them without losing that info.

  • A very important question for every After Effects user

a very important question for every After Effects user, from product manager Steve Forde:
    http://adobe.ly/1exI6tI

Tom Daigon Great idea everybody! Encourage Adobe to do ONLY ONE THING with AE for 2014. Since theres not a heck of a lot of development that can be done on the present foundation, they can really stretch the rental scheme out for many years. And once you get used to the concept, every year they will do ONE THING to placate you. So now they have you swallowing no "ownership" of software and limited development.

  • Problems exporting Animation codec from After Effects CS3 to FCP

    Hi,
I wonder if anybody can help: I am having troubles with video transfer from After effects CS3 to FCP 6
my workflow is to edit and export in FCP as quicktime movie - work on the clip in AE and then export as Animation/best quality/Millions of colors+. The footage is SD Pal 1024 x 576.
the problem is that the files don't seem to play back properly in quicktime - very jagged and lots of ghosting. I assume this is due to the memory heavy features of the codec.
However any file over 10 seconds will not be imported into FCP natively and a message reads final cut pro does not support this file type.
I overcame this by opening the clip in quicktime and then exporting again with exactly the same settings - this then reads in FCP - although this seems over the top
I now want to work with a 10 min finished comp in FCP but when I try to do this it picks up the ghosting that had appeared when playback in quicktime. However when rendered/ exported from the FCP timeline it retains the ghosting
in short I can burn a successful DVD of the footage as is from AE but it is not suitable to FCP.
I have tried exporting the clip in quicktime as quicktime DV pal but this retains the ghosting. Is this a hard ware problem or is my work flow wrong?
    thanks
    Paul

Converting from A to B means either a lossy conversion or a significant increase in storage requirements (up to 5x with DV as the starting point). You are best served with keeping conversions to a minimum.
    > cause this compressor doesn't like images
    What is that based on?
    > in several forums I have red that "automatik" inside of encore does often not work properly
This is in contradiction with the general feelings on this forum.

  • Importing Motion 2 into After Effects 7

Is it my imagination and/or lack of knowledge, or does AE7 not allow for the import of Motion 2 (with .motn or .mov as the extension)? I've tried it every way I can think of (based on the previous posts here about getting Motion 2 into AE6.5) and I can't get it to work.
Anyone else know for certain if this functionality is now broken?

I'm basing my question off of this info (as found at http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/motion/):
    "Integrated Workflow
You can now use Motion in conjunction with Adobe After Effects. All of the particle effects, Replicator designs and animations in Motion can be added to an After Effects “comp” without rendering. Making a change is as simple as selecting “Open in Editor” from the After Effects edit menu."
And clicking on the "Features" link at the top of that same page leads to:
"In fact, Motion gets along so splendidly with Adobe After Effects that you can drag and drop project files into the latter or launch Motion from within After Effects."
Clicking further on the "Adobe After Effects Integration" link at the bottom of the "Features" page leads to this quote:
"You can also work hand-in-hand with Adobe After Effects. Drag and drop your native Motion 2 project files into After Effects 6.5 without rendering. To make a change, simply launch Motion from within After Effects; the changes you make will automatically update in your After Effects composition. And those who normally use After Effects can now easily access the intuitive particle creation, elegant Replicator designs and drag-and-drop procedural animation found in Motion 2."
I'm looking to be able to use this functionality with Motion 2 and After Effects 7. I'd prefer to remove the step of exporting .mov files out of Motion projects when I could possibly just import or drag/drop a native Motion 2 file right into After Effects 7 without rendering, as Apple states became possible in version 2.
Right now, when I attempt to do so with AE7, I get an error message that reads:
"After Effects error: retrieving movie from file "File Name" -- no QuickTime movie found (-2048).
    ( 10 :: 21 )"
That's when I try using the .motn and .mov extension. I'm guessing that Apple will have to alter the way Motion files are read as Quicktime files in order to get After Effects to recognize them as version 6.5 did.
    Is this not correct?

  • 3D modeling and After Effects 7

I am trying to find a way to improve my ability to do 3D modeling/animation that works well with After effect 7. I could move to CS3 Master Collection, but can't handle the price. I am currently using ULead's Cool3D, but am looking for something better. I recently located "Art of Illusion" that seems pretty cool.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    >I disagree with those C4D naysayers. Those that talk like that have
    >probably never used the app in a production environment instead of as >a hobbyist. It rocks and there's none better for AE integration IMHO.
Well, you can get just as nice AE integration in MAX or XSI and there are several scripts for Maya and Houdini. That one is a rather weak argument, especially coming from someone who seems to jump from one program to another as it fits his argumentation (or would you like to go hunting for some of your past flaming XSI and MAX endorsements and elaborate on them?). I have used C4D ever since v5.21 in our company's production and certainly think that lets me know its strengths and weaknesses well enough and gauge its advancement (or lack thereof in several areas)...
    >That's pretty funny. Lightwave is used a bit in the professional
    >world but the rest...not so much...and superior features?! That's one >guy's opinion.
Well, have you ever looked at Realsoft 3D? It had n-gon SDS long before C4D even dreamt of it. Until this day it has one of the few native patch surface renderers that don't need tesselation and offer infinite resolution, it has pretty decent particles, dynamics, a tree generator, GI... Similar things could be said for Truespace.
And you are also forgetting the original posters question: It has absolutely no relevance whether a program is used in the "professional" world when stepping up from a even more simplistic/ basic program like Cool 3D. Compared to this one, even Cheetah 3D feels like stepping up from a 10 year old used car to something new...
Also, what's quite annoying in your logic is that we all have to "look up" to some things we can never hope to attain, only to be counted as "professionals". Following that line of thinking, we'd all have to ruin ourselves by buying Maya and Renderman licenses and then go bankrupt 'cos it doesn't serve our needs. Trust me, I have used Maya and tried Renderman and they are both sons of ******* if your workflow is not particularly tailored to them. So in the end: What would you have achieved?
There's nothing wrong taking a look out of the window from time. Today's seemingly lo-fi hobbyist tool may evolve into every pro's darling tomorrow. It has happened with C4D (which was a rather ugly, not so feature rich duckling pre v7) and can happen to others as well.
And be honest: Before Maxon started properly marketing C4D and Bodypaint in the US around v8/ v9 did any of you know it? I doubt that and your comments would have been quite different a few years ago... I'm reasonably you would have assigned it the same lack of "professioanlism" (there's that ugly word again) as you do now to other programs.

  • Text won't import from flash to after effects

    Dear all,
I'm relatively new to Flash (and an absolute novice at AE). I've been working on a series of simple videos in Flash that have alternating text and images. The idea was to import these .swf into Premiere Pro. However, Premier Pro doesn't take .swf files and I have to go through AE. When I import my .swf into AE all the text disappears and I only have the images. Any idea how to work around this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

See this note from After Effects Help about what is imported from a SWF file:
"SWF files are imported with an alpha channel. Audio is not retained. Interactive content and scripted animation are not retained. Animation defined by keyframes in the main, top-level movie is retained."

  • Import 3D PSD to After Effects CC

    Hi all!
    First time poster here
So, I have a .3ds model file. I have opened this in Photoshop and saved it as a PSD. When I open the PSD, the layers are there, the textures, I can move it around 3 dimensional space - all perfect.
But when I import this into After Effects CC and choose composition - retain layer sizes, it adds in a comp, with a folder containing the single PSD. This time, when I choose the rotate tool, it is now a flat image that I am rotating. It's as if it has lost the 3D part of the image. Is this a problem in the saving of the PSD? Or perhaps the way I'm importing/viewing it in AE?
I'm running the very latest CC of both, and the .3ds file used at the start was exported via 3DS Max 2015.
    Many thanks
    Mark

Thanks Mylenium. I'm afraid I'm a complete beginner with Cinema 4D. I understand it can be accessed from within AE but I get a message about there being no Cinema 4D file. I see I can export from AE to a c4d file, but in my circumstances I would need to export as c4d from Photoshop instead?
    Many thanks

1 In After Effects, choose File > Import > File.
2 In the Import File dialog, choose All Files from the Enable pop-up menu.
3 Click to select the Motion project you want to import.
4 Choose QuickTime Movie from the Format pop-up menu.
