Import confusion

import java.io.*
and
import java.io.BufferedReader ;
import java.io.InputStreamReader ;
import java.io.IOException ;
are same or different ?
io.* means all classes are included ?

praggy wrote:
you mean to say that any time rather than writing specific

if if write java.io.*; it is much safe.I just meant that "import java.io.*;" would have more or less the same effect as writing an import for each of the classes in the java.io package.
There are a couple of problems with using the "*" form. (By the way it is called type import on demand)
(1) It is quite possible for classes in two packages to have the same name. (Think about the Date class for instance.) If you say
import java.sql.*;
import java.util.*;
    // later...
Date d = ...Which Date do you mean? You would have to consult the "rules" to find out. A single type import is much clearer.
(2) The type import on demand is less self documenting. If you include a single type import for each class you need (and none you don't need) then you can tell at a glance what the dependencies are.
I don't consider it a problem that (as was suggested earlier) "Through java.io.* you only get the classes and interfaces in java.io package but not other package inside java.io package." Because you shouldn't expect this in the first place. The type import on demand is just that: a type import, not an import of subpackages. Ie, just an import of classes and interfaces.

  • Importing confusion re projects

I know this has been discussed, but I remain confused about a basic import question. I know I'm required to import into a project (don't like this, but I understand this is the structure). So I created a project titled "Imports". I know I can then move pics to any album or other project.
However, for many pics, I really don't need them in a specific project, just in my library (perhaps in an album as well that resides in that library). Is my only choice to keep the masters either 1) in that original "Imports" project or 2) to move the master to a different project? Moving to a different project, when I really don't need the pic to be in a project, just leads to the creation of additional unwanted projects.
I feel like I'm missing something basic here, but I guess if I need to, I can just keep "growing" a huge "Imports" project to hold pics that don't belong elsewhere. Thanks!

    13" Macbook; 2gb RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Thanks much for the quick responses. I've read the bagelturf info, and although feeling rather dense at the moment, remain confused. I still remain with my original questions. If I try to organize all imported pics by placing them in brown folders (beneath the "Import" project), that doesn't work (a new brown folder doesn't seem to accept pics from the project above it).
So again, the question is how to organize pics once imported into the "imports" project (I realize if it makes sense to import into already existing projects, that's easy). Assuming pics don't really need to be in any other project, does it make sense to just leave them in the "Imports" project? It would seem that would just grow and grow (and yes, I could make an "Imports 2" project so it doesn't get too large, but this just doesn't feel right).
On a very related to note, my initial venture into Aperture was importing my iphoto library (simply using the "Import iphot" command. Doing that, I ended up with my "Library", under which was a blue folder (eg, Vacations), under which were albums (eg., Bryce Canyon). Project did not even seem to appear.... so if everything HAS to be in a project, what project are those pics in?
Sorry to be dense here, but this does seem more confusing than it needs to be!

  • Import Confusion-New Mac Convert

I have both iPhoto and Aperture (trial) loaded on my system. All of my photos (from my PC days) are on an external HD now connected to my Mac. I'm very confused about the import and storage process. Technically, all my photos are already stored, yet when I 'import' them into iPhoto as 'events' it appears they are being restored somewhere else- maybe just my own paranoia, but it's taking longer than I'd expect to just be storing thumbnails. Next issue, when I connect my camera, photos start to load into both iPhoto AND Aperture.
I'd like to keep my photos 'stored' on my external hard drive, not my internal mac drive. How do I control this in a way that isn't discouraging? In the PC world I considered myself an expert and things were very controllable and logical. Help! Thanks.

    psurgery
I considered myself an expert and things were very controllable and logical.
As they are on the Mac. And if you want to replicate the system you used on the PC then do that. A simple, logical system of folders in the File System (the Finder) will be something that any expert can understand
If, however, you want to use iPhoto (or Aperture) then you need to realise that these are not FILE organisers but PHOTO organisers. It's a key difference and the first one you need to grasp to make sense of the Applications.
The advantage of either application is simple: it offers vastly more organising, categorising and searching power than folders in the Finder. They integrate throughout the Operating System. They do other stuff too. I'll talk about iPhoto here, though anything iPhoto does Aperture does - and then a whole lot more.
By default, iPhoto copies the files to the iPhoto Library on import. It wants to manage the FILES so you can manage the PHOTOS. The idea is that you focus on the iPhoto Window and do all your work there - create Albums, Smart Albums, keywords and so forth.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, that can be easily done from the iPhoto Window.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Aperture has more robust tools for working with managed files than iPhoto.
Remember, you've changed OS, there's a learning curve and it takes a little time.
btw: The photos are not imported into either application unless you expressly tell the apps to import.
    Regards
    TD

  • Confused about CLASSPATH and how java handles import statements...

    Hello,
I must admit I don't get it. I read the articles about setting CLASSPATH etc. but I still wonder:
If you use an import statement, what does the compiler do? I.e. where does it look for the specified classes? I find it confusing because I see in different locations different .jar files:
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\dt.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\htmlconvertor.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\lib\tools.jar
    and also
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\i18n.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\rt.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\jaws.jar
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib\sunrassign.jar
Can someone explain me what the purpose is of these files?
And why do I have the same contents in
    C:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3.1_03\lib
    and in
    C:\jdk1.3.1_03\jre\lib
    Why is that?
    Thanks for answering my questions!
    -mike

Thanx for the answers, but I still wonder, everyone
here says I need to set the classpath, but I don't.Probably because your classes are already in the class path. The compiler/jvm also look for classes by themselves not just in jar files, when just a directory is supplied in the class path. And a period (".") is a valid directory.
Programs importing different classes compile with no
problem. So what's up with that?
Presumably you are referring to your own code - because they are in the class path.
Second, I still don't understand why the runtime needs
the .jar files. The runtime uses classes, like String, that have to come from somewhere.
This would also mean that end-users
need to set the classpath to the .jar files in their
JRE directory to be able to run programs that import
classes from these .jars. But this is not true, right? No it is true. The end-users will have to set the class path. There are variations on this which make it seem like no class path is set. For instance applets in a browser are java but the end-user does not need to set a class path. That is because the browser knows how to download classes/jars and how to set it up so it uses them. (Actually it uses a class loader, but that is probably more information that you need.)
Because if I make some nice classes myself and import
them, how can I expect my end-user to install these
classes and make a classpath for them? That would be between you and you end-user.
First installation is not part of java. For installation you will have to find something outside of java to accomplish the goal.
Additionally how the class path gets set is OS specific. Java does not deal with that. You will also have to find some way to deal with this (most likely part of the installation.)
There are also variations on this. For example the browser example I gave above. Or using the ext directory. Or creating an executable jar. Or simply setting the class path.
In my understanding it should only be needed in the JDK, not
in the JRE. True or am I mistaken?Mistaken. The class path is needed in the JRE as well. You will need to set it.

  • Confused about importing images

I'm new to DreamWeaver but I've used GoLive for many years and still do. In GoLive if I want to import a folder of images so as to have them to work with in my site I just select Import, navigate to the folder and click it and the folder of images is copied to the site and appears in the GoLive window.
There is no way to do this in DreamWeaver that I can see. There is nothing I can find in the Help files or in the Missing Manual about importing images except one confusing entry in the Missing Manual. It says an image can be anywhere on your hard drive, but a couple paragraphs later it says images should be in the root folder of the site. I don't see any way to get them into the root folder other than doing so in the Finder which the documentation cautions against because DreamWeaver will become confused if this is done outside of DreamWeaver's Files window.
This has been absolutely maddening for me and I've spent at least an hour trying to figure out how to simply import images. It shouldn't be this difficult? What am I missing?

    Russ.G wrote:
I believe my original question clearly stated that I wanted to import a _folder_ of images into DW and _not_ bring them in _one at a time_ as I use them. This qestion remains unanswered.
No, you cannot IMPORT the images per se, there is no import function available.
Nadia, first you say to bring files into DW via the Files window and caution against doing it another way. Then in your next reply you say you don't use the Files window and so in fact bring the images in another way via Windows Explorer.
I appreciate you trying to be helpful, but I can't imagine being presented with more contradictory and confusing information.
Can anybody tell me how to import a folder of images into DW?
What I was trying to explain was that there are different ways to 'bring in' the images into the defined Dreamweaver site.
    1.  Copy them from anywhere on your hard-drive  into a specific images folder within the defined site.
    2.  Work with an image that may be saved elsewhere, but save it to a folder within the defined site.
As for the confusion.  regarding working with files, you need to understand why you need to define a site in Dreamweaver first.  DW keeps track of all the links as you build a site, but the files - whether html, text or image files - need to be inside the defined site folder structure.  How you get them in there is completely up to you.  More than one way to skin a cat as they say.
    Define a site:

  • Confused about Sony HDR-SR7 and iMovie '08 import

I have my camera set to record at HD XP (15Mb/s). If I look on the camera hard drive at an arbitrary .mts file that is 107.3MB and import that into iMovie '08 at the Full (1920x1080) setting, that 107.3MB file turns into a whopping 854.5MB, while the Large (960x540) setting yields a much more reasonable 287.3MB file size (yet still double the size of the raw file sitting on the hard drive).
There's got to be some re-encoding going on, but what's the point? Why take a 100MB file and explode it to 800MB when you can't get any more quality out of the 100MB file?
Is it just the fact that iMovie doesn't actually support whatever native codec Sony's AVCHD uses, so it needs to re-encode it using AIC whose compression isn't as good as whatever codec AVCHD is using?
So this poses a real dilemma for me - do I import at Full or do I import at Large? Where does one notice the difference? If I blow up the 960 file to display the same size as the 1920 file, I can totally see artifacts on my 30" ACD, but would they show up on my Pioneer plasma TV? PDP-5070HD (1365x768))
Assuming I stay on Full quality - is there any way I can accurately tell how much hard drive space an import is going to consume? Right now my 60GB drive is rammed to the gills and I want to dump it all, but I need to make sure I have the space. 1:8?

    Hi
*First: it sounds like you are not importing to iMovie, it sounds like you are trying to browse to the clips. That may not work.*
Ok - I was trying to import and also to view directly on the camcorder (but not at the same time). It was maybe 2 questions rolled into one so apologies if that was confusing...
*Second:You have SD and HD mixed, All of the SD has to be imported before any HD can be imported according to the manual.*
So what would I do, import SD movies first, and then delete it to then import HD specifically? Or do I just import SD and then import HD separately without deleting SD footage from the camcorder?
*Third point: The clips can be on the hard drive or the card. The camera has to be set to the media with the clips you want to import. If you recorded to the card, then switched to the hard drive, you won't be able to import the card video until you switch back.*
I dont have a card at the moment - only using the HDD.
*When you have the import working it is a matter of using the check box to select the clips you want.*
i assume iMovie loads them all up and asks you which ones you want to import?
*Alos one final point for video on the card I find it much easier to use a card reader to import. When I plug in the card reader to my usb port it mounts on the desk top, I start iMovie and the import screen comes up after iMovie is all opened up and running.*
I dont see much point in the card reader at the moment as the HDD is 120GB whereas I assume memory sticks only go to 8GB or so max...
*I hope I have been of some help.*
yes thanks for that - but am still confused by the whoel iMovie & HD import situation and how I should be doing it
    All help appreciated

  • Confused about how imovie converted clips on import

So, I brought a bunch of movies into iMovie, which were saved as h.264 (bit rate 5000), in a 1280 X 720 size, with the .m4v file extension. Dragged them into iMovie events. Then, after all the clips were brought in, I looked at the files in the events folders, and some of them had been converted to: AIC codec with a bit rate of 36,336. The most confusing aspect of this is that only some of the clips were converted, while others remain in their original format, even though they were all brought in together. There's a tremendous difference in file size. The question then is: why were some clips converted and other clips not converted?

    Hi
A Wild Suggestion - By not using iMovie'08 to 11
You want a DVD and as good as possibly I guess then iM'08 to 11 are not tools of choice as Your miniDV tapes are interlaced SD-Video and non of them can in any way I know of Export over to iDVD this but only every second line = Less quality
If You use - iMovie HD6 - then (Not Share to iDVD - but)
    • close iMovie when done and import the Movie Project (icon with a blac Star on it) into iDVD. Now iDVD will render and does this So Much Better
    • AND - You import Your miniDV tapes in sequence - same as it/they was recorded.

  • Confused about import and export formats

I have a load of 8mm video footage that I want to archive before the old camera dies. As a first step I have used my DVD/HDD recorder attached to my TV to save the footage from the camera, do a little bit of editing and then burn onto DVD at the highest quality available. Doing this I can get 60 mins of footage onto each DVD and the quality is a good as the original. I now want to play with a few of these by importing into iMovie 09 so that I can add a few titles and link clips together with a few transitions. Nothing too complicated. Here's where I get a bit lost with all the formats available to me for importing and exporting. What's the best way of doing this? Having read around a bit it looks like conversion to DV is good for getting into iMovie in the first place. To do this I have tried using MPEG Streamclip and it looks OK, but what about all of the settings options DV25, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50, frame blending, downscaling etc etc no idea what any of this means. Then having added a few bits and pieces, what's the best way of saving it again to make sure that I keep the quality as high as possible - DV? Ultimately I'd like to have the edited movies back on DVDs with the footage quality the same as I started with i.e. no compression artefacts. If I save the final version in DV format I could then keep copies to view with Quicktime and then do I just use iDVD or MPEG Streamclip to convert to a format playable on a DVD player. Is there any guide somewhere as to what all of the different formats are for pro.s cons etc. Also confused as to why files get bigger and bigger e.g. a 20min clip on a DVD is about 1.5GB, but when converted to DV becomes almost 5GB. I can understand how compression makes files sizes smaller, but what's happening here??
    Neil

A Quick Time .mov movie can play on any PC as log as they have the Quicktime player
    free http://www.apple.com/quicktime/
To do it, open iMovie, pick you project, then "Share to Media Browser" and pick the "HD" setting. It can take hours/movie depending on their length. Once it is done you can find it inside the iMovie project's file. TO get there, go to Users Folder -> your User name folder -> Movies -> iMovie projects -> and find the project that you made the movie from. Right click on that file (or use the control key as you click on the file) and you will see a menu -> Show Package contents -> Movies and your 720p .mov movie will be in that Movie folder. you can drag it to your desktop and copy it to your external HD or flash drive.

I keep reading that i need converter software to import Canon DSLR (Mark II or D6) H.264 MOV file to iMovie? True? I'm confused.

iMovie 9.0.9 is the latest version you can run unless you upgrade to the Mavericks operating system (OS 10.9).
Your profile (at the bottom of your post) mentions OS 10.4.11 (Tiger) which is why I mentioned that.
The list of supported cameras is not comprehensive  but articles such as:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/make_canon_eos_6d_h_264_1080p_footage_e ditable_in_fcp_imovie
do indicate that conversion is needed before import, at least for iMovie 9.  Although it's a recent article it doesn't specifically mention  iMovie 10.
iMovie 10 has a very much changed interface and a different folder structure so upgrading is not trivial so I would not advise rushing into upgrading.
Maybe someone with knowledge of this camera can help.

  • Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Just bought a Nikon d750 and confused about adobe LR4 and PS6 support for the RAW files. I have DNG 8.7 but wondering if LR and PS will import direct soon Thanks for any advice

Support for the Nikon D750 was introduced in the latest version of LR 5.7 and ACR 8.7 on Novemder 18th 2014.
Further updates to LR 4 were stopped when LR 5 was released on June 9th 2013. No further updates for bug fixes and new camera support.
Nada, LR 4 will never support Nikon D750. The Nikon D750 was introduced into the market in September 2014 some 15 months after further development of LR 4 was discontinued.
You can use the Adobe DNG program (free download for the package) to convert the Nef (raw) files from your Nikon D750 to the Adobe DNG format which will permit you to import those into LR 4. This is the crutch provided by Adobe to allow for the processing of raw files with outdated versions of LR and ACR.
You can also update the ACR plugin for PS CS6 to version 8.7 which can also work with the raw files from the D750. For direct support in Lightroom you will need to upgrade (paid) to version 5.7.

  • Importing a recorded dvd-rw into i-movie?  Totally confused!

I've read the previous replies, but now am more confused!  I'm assuming I need some kind of conversion program to enable me to 'import' my home movies (transferred from vhs tape to dvd-rw), to Imovie.  I've looked into Wondershare, Handbrake, Streamclip...all are so entrenched in abbreviations, etc, that I'm just about ready to give up on this project.  Is there ANYTHING user-friendly that I can turn to to accomplish this?  Any courses available?  Anything at all? Help!!

a loooong time ago I made this illustrated page for my website
    https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/convertdvdtoim09
for using Mpeg Streamclip, you need an additional purchase, the Apple mp2 playback component:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A
in Handbrake, which doesn't need additional plugins, the steps are:
    • insert disk
    • launch HB
    • select the Regular/Normal preset (right arrow)
    • UNcheck the Create Chapter Marker (left arrow)
// standard disclaimer: be nice to copy rights //

  • Confused Metadata after import from catalogue

I have two catalogues on this machine. I just imported one into the other in order to merge them. The images in each catalogue have never been in the other.
After the import, most, but not I think all, imported images have an icon either saying either:
The metadata for this photo has been changed by both Lightroom and another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?
    or
The metadata for this photo has been changed by another application. Should Lightroom import settings from disk or overwrite disk settings with those from the catalog?
My confusion is because I can't see how either of these statements can be true for most of the photos, which have either lived in one or the other LR catalogue all their lives. Unless by "another application" it is just referring to another instance of LR in the past?
I also don't understand whether "overwrite settings ... with those from the catalog" means using the metadata in the current catalogue, which came from the old catalogue (and which I therefore want), or whether it means overwrite the images embedded metadata with the (blank) metadata in the new catalogue after importing.
Assuming Metadata really means literally that, and not Keywords or presence in Collections etc, then it's no biggy, as I don't use Metadata very much. But still, can someone guide me through the safest option for the 6000 imported photos?
    thanks

    Ian-
After reading your post, I did some reading, and now I get how to us LR's Paint tool!
With only your jpeg selected in the Library module, go to grid mode displaying the other images you want to copy the keywords to. Select the Paint tool in the tool strip, and If you don't see it, select Metadata>Enable painting.
On the right-hand panel, there is a Keywording text box with a comma-delimited list of keywords in the selected jpeg. Use your pointer to select all the list, then copy.
Make sure the paint tool is set for Keywords, then click in the dim little text box next to the Paint: Keywords selection labels. It should turn white: copy the list into that text box.
Now, click on each picture in the grid you want the list applied to and it happens! A message comes up. The spray paint icon changes to an eraser, so if you want to remove the keywords from an image, just click it.
    Pretty cool tool!

  • RAW + JPEG Import Settings Confusion

I recently bought a new camera which allows me to shoot in RAW and RAW+JPEG mode. I have at present set it to the latter, partially to be safe, and also for allowing quick image loading when out and about and can quickly upload the JPEG files to my ipad.
But having just purchased Aperture 3, I am really confused over the RAW+Separate import brick's choices.
I really cannot work out which is the best option,
    Both (Raw as Master),
    Both (JPEG As Master),
    Both (Separate Masters)  or
    Just RAW.
I have been reading  a book  called "Aperture 3 Portable Genius, but to be honest, it has only made things even more confusing!
Can someone please advise which are the best settings to use, and under what circumstances I would use the particular setting.
    Thanks :-)

"best settings to use" is hard to answer, since it depends what kind of photography you're doing and how you like to work.
It might be useful to understand that if you import 'jpeg as master' aperture treats the jpeg/master pair as one entity. When you edit the photo in AP you'll be editing the jpeg. If you want to get to the RAW, you'll have to choose "Set Raw as Master". Vice-Versa if you import 'raw as master'.
If you import 'both (separate masters)' you'll see both jpeg and raw in AP as 2 separate files which can be edited separately.  I've never actually used this option, so I could be wrong about that.
I guess the first thing to decide is which format you most want to work with in Aperture. If you only want to work with RAW in AP, then choose 'RAW files only'. In this scenario the only reason you're shooting raw+jpeg is for the quick upload to iPad.
Maybe it would help if I explain how/why I use pairs. I shoot a lot of architectural interiors and most of the time I work closely with an art director who needs to see what the shots are looking like as the session proceeds. I shoot raw+jpeg for this and send the jpegs to my laptop over wi-fi for review. This is the *only* reason I'm shooting pairs, as the tiny jpeg makes the journey so much quicker than the large raw and is of sufficient quality for the purpose. I have the camera set to produce the smallest jpeg possible for fastest transfer.
Back at base I'll import the raw files only. Even if I was using a higher resolution jpeg I'd still only import raw. For me it's what Aperture is all about, and unlike say... wedding photography, this type of shoot is low volume so there's no advantage in working with jpeg, and many advantages in working with raw.
Actually, I use another import option for pairs: 'matching Raw files only'. This is a huge timesaver. It means that during the shoot we can rate the photos (jpegs) as we go, and I'm only importing the raws that meet that rating. IE I don't have to import the entire shoot and try to remember which lighting set-up (for eg)  the director liked best.
Hope that helps. Also, take a look under "more like this" upper right on this page. Some good stuff in there.

  • Confused... iPhoto import

Ok.. I am very confused as how to use iPhoto. I want to import photos from my camera onto my Mac and and need some clarification here. For some reason, it feels like I haven't got the hang of it!
    1. After, my camera is detected as a mounted volume, iPhoto opens and kind of hangs for some time. It takes a while for my camera to be displayed in the devices section of iPhoto. Is this the general behavior? I noticed that iPhoto hangs for atleast 5-10 minutes before I can proceed with the import.
    2. What does the option 'copy to iPhoto library during import' really do? I have posted previously on a similar topic but still I get so confused. Please help me. What really happens with that option checked and unchecked? How would it affect the import of photos from my camera? Would it mean iPhoto duplicates the imported photos? Confused a lot with this option....
    3. Is there any other way for me to import? Or should I just use iPhoto, because it doesn't give me the flexibility to organize the photos as I wish on my Mac...

No - this is not normal
How much free disk space do you have (you should have a minimum of 10GB of available disk at all times)

It means that "iPhoto copies imported items to the iPhoto library"
Once the photos are successfully copied into the iPhoto library you can delete the originals that yo impoted - never go into the iPhoto library and never make any changes in the iPhoto library using any program except iPhoto
    3. Is there any other way for me to import? Or should I just use iPhoto, because it doesn't give me the flexibility to organize the photos as I wish on my Mac...
You can use image capture - or any program of or choice - in the iPhoto preferences set the program you want as the action when a camera is connected - or set no program and just drag them where you want them
Or should I just use iPhoto, because it doesn't give me the flexibility to organize the photos as I wish on my Mac...
That is your choice - iPhoto is a very powerful photo manager - if you want a file manager then you should not use it - but you will be missing a lot - for simply managing files use the finder or Google Picaso for Mac

  • Confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.

confusion re: photostream, import from memory card, events, etc.
Up until a few weeks ago, my travel-photo-handling went like this:
Each night, I download photos to my iPad for safekeeping. They, of course, wind up in Photostream.
When I return home, I connect my camera card to my iMac (where I have my iPhoto library), and I can "see" the photos on my memory card - the photos which, although in Photostream, I have not yet manually downloaded.
    I select and ownload them.
New Events are created in my Library automatically, as I have my preference set to Autosplit Events.
This week, I came home from a trip during which I had downloaded to iPad during my time away.
I connected my memory card to the iMac.
iPhoto did not "see" any photos to import - as far as iPhoto was concerned, those photos were already in my Library.
I had iPhoto show all photos on my card, selected the photos from my trip (I shot over 1000) and clicked "Import Selected"
    iPhoto says they're duplicates.
However, the photos have NOT been downloaded manually and there are NO Events in my Library for those days.
Note: yeah, they're in Photostream, but IN THE PAST - and I mean literally up until 3 weeks ago - the photos have ALWAYS been "visible" and importable even if in Photostream, as long as I had not yet manually downloaded to the computer.
So my question, I guess, is multi-part:
What changed in iPhoto and/or Photostream in the past couple of weeks?
Why are Photostream photos suddenly considered to be the same as the photos on my card which have not yet been manually downloaded to the computer?
What the heck is going on?
I hate having duplicates, but I also hate being confused by something that used to be really easy, then - with Photosream - became annoying, and is now simply perplexing and sometimes imcomprehendable.

Check iPhoto's Photo Stream preference pane to see if the highlighted checkbox in the screenshot below is checked.  If it is then all photos taken by the iPad are automatifdally being imported into your library.
Go the the Events mode and check the View ➙ Sort menu option to verify where new Evens will be located, at the top of the window or the bottom.  Then check to see if your PS pictures are there.
As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Connect your iPad and import all photos.  Dismount the iPad, close and reopen the test library, connect the iPad again and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does'nt then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
