Import Multiple Excel Into Sql Server

I have 4 Excel spreadsheets all with different formatting and column names that I want to use powershell to import into ONE Sql Server Table that I will want to create with powershell.  I have found several instances of importing one workbook, but I
haven't found one where you can import multiple workbooks into the same table.  Can someone show sample code for a reference on how to import multiple spreadsheets into the same table with powershell please?  I found this link which looks like a
GREAT starting point, but unfortunately it is only showing how to do one table, and I am WAY new to powershell so can't tweak it on my own to set it to import multiple

Hi IndigoMontoya,
As a workaroud, how about merge mutiple excel files into one file, then import this excel file to sql table?
To merge excel files, please refer to this script:
$Files = 'd:\merge1.xlsx','d:\merge2.xlsx'
#Launch Excel, and make it do as its told (supress confirmations)
$Excel = New-Object -ComObject Excel.Application
$Excel.Visible = $True
$Excel.DisplayAlerts = $False
#Open up a new workbook
$Dest = $Excel.Workbooks.Add()
#Loop through files, opening each, selecting the Used range, and only grabbing the first 6 columns of it. Then find next available row on the destination worksheet and paste the data
ForEach($File in $Files[0..4]){
$Source = $Excel.Workbooks.Open($File,$true,$true)
If(($Dest.ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Count -eq 1) -and ([String]::IsNullOrEmpty($Dest.ActiveSheet.Range("A1").Value2))){ #If there is only 1 used cell and it is blank select A1
[void]$source.ActiveSheet.Range("A1","F$(($Source.ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows|Select -Last 1).Row)").Copy()
[void]$Dest.Activate()
[void]$Dest.ActiveSheet.Range("A1").Select()
}Else{ #If there is data go to the next empty row and select Column A
[void]$source.ActiveSheet.Range("A1","F$(($Source.ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows|Select -Last 1).Row)").Copy()
[void]$Dest.Activate()
[void]$Dest.ActiveSheet.Range("A$(($Dest.ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows|Select -last 1).row+1)").Select()
[void]$Dest.ActiveSheet.Paste()
$Source.Close()
$Dest.SaveAs("d:\merge3.xlsx",51)
$Dest.close()
$Excel.Quit()

  • Skip bad row during importing large dump into sql server

    Hello,
    I have an issue during importing very large (more than 3 GB) dump file into sql server express. I have used command line for this purpose. Unfortunately this file was exported in UTF-8 so I had to convert it unicode. The unicode columns contain N' prefix.
    Unfortunately the file contains apostrophes in other fields as well.
    My question is: Is there an opportunity to skip bad rows during importing? (Force import e.g.)
    Sincerely, Laszlo Toth

    >>>Unfortunately the file contains apostrophes in other fields as well.
    You can concatenate the single quote using the CHAR function to build the string:
    SELECT N'Brian O'+CHAR(39)+'Brien'

  • How to import csv file with multiple tables into sql server

    I have multiple csv files that has one sheet but has 130 headers with each header having different data.
    I'd like to import each one of these header rows with data into its own file in sql server.
    I know very basic SSIS and am but am not familiar with the scripting in it though which what I assume I'd have to use.
    Each header in the csv file is structured as such(also see example pic):
    first header would be this:
          ITEM = ORG_V
          DATE = 2013-07-22 10:00 ~ 2013-07-22 10:15
    column names
    data
    second header would be this:
    ITEM = TER_V
          DATE = 2013-07-22 10:00 ~ 2013-07-22 10:15
    column names
    data
    The headers can be at any random row number as well as the data size in each excel file differs but they all start with "ITEM ="
    and then in the next row "DATE ="
    I could also convert these to excel files if it makes this process easier.

    Why don't you put a filter on D3, filter out the blanks, copy/paste to a new CSV file, save it, and import it.
    There's no way you're going to get SQL to do that kind of thing for you.  The language is for set based operations, not for complex data manipulation tasks.
    Knowledge is the only thing that I can give you, and still retain, and we are both better off for it.

  • Error importing text file into SQL Server when last column is null

    Hello all. Happy holidays!
    I'm trying to import a text file into a SQL Server table, and I get the error below when it gets to a row (row 264) that has null in the last column. I'm guessing the null jumbles up the delimiters somehow. The nulls are not errors, and I need to import
    them into the table with the rest of the rows. Any idea how I can do that?
    Thanks!

    WeeLass

    Hi WeeLass,
    The error that” Data conversion failed. The data conversion for column "XYZ" returned status value 2 and status text "The value could not be converted because of a potential loss of data.".” is generally error message, and the error indicates
    that there is data type mismatch issue between the input columns and the output columns.
    Based on your description, the issue is that you trying to convert a column contains empty value from string to integer data type for the output column "XYZ" in Flat File Source [1]. Please note that we cannot type an empty value as integer data
    type column value, so the error occurs.
    To fix this issue, just as you did, we should convert the data type for the output column "XYZ" in Flat File Source [1] back to DT_WSTR or DT_STR, then use a derived column task to replace the current column (UBPKE542). But the expression should
    be like below:
    LEN(TRIM(UBPKE542)) > 0 ? (DT_I8)UBPKE542 : NULL(DT_I8)
    In this way, the data type of the column in SQL table would be int, and the empty value would be replaced with NULL.
    If there are any other questions, please feel free to ask.
    Thanks,

  • Issue importing flat files into SQL server 2008R2

    I have csv files that the last column may not have data. SSIS (version 2008R2) will insert the next row's data into the empty cells, which causes my package to fail.
    I know this is resolved in 2012 but we are using 2008R2 still. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hi sqlBI2014,
    After testing the issue that Flat File Connection Manager cannot handle file with uneven number of columns in each row in my SQL Server 2008 R2 environment, I can reproduce it.
    Based on my research, the issue is caused by the Column Delimiter gets first preference and then Row delimiter. So the next row data would be inserted in the empty column cell. This is by design in SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2.
    Good news is that the issue is fixed in SQL Server Data Tools which comes with SQL Server 2012. In SQL Server 2012, by default, the Flat File Connection Manager always checks for a row delimiter in unquoted data, and starts a new row when a row delimiter
    is found. This enables the connection manager to correctly parse files with rows that are missing column fields.
    If you still want to fix the issue in SQL Server 2008 R2, there is a sample component posted to the CodePlex that might help you with this:

  • Import Access Table into SQL Server 2005

    I am using BIDS and have created a OLEDB connection to my mdb file, and a DataFlowTask for the Control Flow, but lost on what to set-up on the Data Flow tab.  What do I do to set-up the data flow to import the mdb table to sql server?

    Why Execute SQL Task is needed?
    Typically the SQL is embedded into the OLEDB Source.
    I guess when you were working on the destination you chose to create the table. Then you mapped to it. Why you cannot find it in
    options I am not sure. Can you post a picture? The table would be now in the drop down list of tables available, but you supposed not to repeat this step.

    Maybe I am just not fully understanding the link posted - but am trying.  Attached are my screenshots 1 of Control Flow Tab and 2 of Data Flow Tab.  My process is to take an access table and link it into SQL Server

  • Import multiple files using sql server management studio

    Using sql server management studio I want to do 2 things.
    - Import all txt files from a directory as tables into my DB.
    - Add an additional field to each new table which contains the table name.
    Can anyone help me?

    There are couple of ways to do it:
    File naming conventions : YourFileName_SystemId.txt
    You can create one extra column in table or may be name a table with system id. Then after loading the data you can update that column with the system id.
       components required:
     ForEachLoopContainer - To get file and store file name in a variable
     Expression Task (if SSIS 2012 or above) or variable expression or script task to seperate file name from systemId
     Data Flow Task - to load data
     Execute SQL Task - to update last column or specific table based on precedence constraints
    Note: You can also add extra column in data flow via
    derived column transformation.
    Ex.:
    Load file via foreach loop
    Split string via seprator
    2: Loading different system file in different folder
    you can have predefined folder structure ex: SystemId1, SyetemId2 etc and can download respective txt file in their system folder. Then you can easily identity which file belong to which system and then load it to the respective table.
    3: Use first row of text file to hold the system value
    Use first row to have the system id and then skip row while fetching data.
    Note: Then you have to read first row through script task to get the system id.
    hope this will help

    Are you attempting to import into a newly made table or into an existing table? It looks like it's trying to insert data where it cannot be inserted (invalid column or lack of data size in your column).
    Try the following:
    1). In your excel sheet, highlight the whole sheet and make sure the cells are in 'text' form and try re-importing
    2). save the document as ms dos TEXT and import as a text document.
    3). double check your columns are correct for the data, for example if you have a column that has a string of 100 characters and your column is 'NvarChar(90)' - that might cause the error? Or just correct data type in your column
    3). If that doesn't work and you're inserting into a new table, try importing it as string first and writing a query to insert columns that should be float/integer or whatever. You may want to convert float texts to a 'bigint' first rather than string
    > float as that can cause problems if I remember correctly.

  • Error in importing multiple excel sheets to SQL Server

    I have a package which imports multiple excel sheets to SQL server using a For each Container. However I am getting the following error message "Excel Source failed validation and returns validation status "VS-NEEDSNEWMETADATA".
    Can you please advise me of the steps to potentially resolve this issue ?

    Hi Scott,
    Based on your scenario, you need to implement dynamic columns mapping which is not natively supported by managed source/destination adapters. To achieve dynamic columns mapping, we need to make use of Script Component to parse the input columns and dynamically
    map them to the destination columns.
