Import old mail stalls Yosemite

Updated to Yosemite and upon first opening mail it downloads old mail. This operation stalls out at around 186000 out of 201000 emails.  It stalls at the same point even when I've cancelled and started again. What to do?

Hello Vilas Magar,
Thanks for your quick response and sorry for the delay in my response.
His suggestion was quite useful, thank you.
Best regards,
Cristina

  • Starting Lion Mail without importing old mails?

with the upgrade to Lion OSX, I lost access to my mails!
Starting Lion Mail it asks to import old mails. Only other choice is cancelling the process.
It then spends around 1hour loading (invisibly) old mails into new Lion mail (ca. 260,000 mails.)
Right before the end of the importing process, it breaks up and send error message that some index has been distroyed.... should restart mail... and it would then repair the index... THIS IS NOT THE CASE.
    I am stuck.
Can anyone please tell me, if it is possible to start Lion Mail from scratch preventing it from importing old mails automatically?
I have erased com.mail.plist as well as all folders related to my old emails, but it manages to find the old mails somewhere in the invisible parts of the computer (MacBook Pro).
    Thanks for helping out

Those Mail messages are in the Mail folder of your user's Library folder.  With Mail not running, in the Finder hold down an "option" key while you pull down the "Go" menu.  Select Library from the menu list.  In the resulting Finder window move the folder Mail to the Desktop.  You should now be able to launch Mail without that import problem.  This is a guess, but you may be able to import the contents of specific mailboxes from the saved Mail folder.

  • How to import old mails form Panther mail version to Tiger mail version

    Hello!
I just updated my iBook G4 from Panther to Tiger and learned, that there is no easy way to import my old mails from Panther mail version to the new Tiger mail version.
Tiger runs on a different partition than the Panther system, so all the old "things" are still there because they were not overwritten with the update.
I read about the work around with the "emlx convert" program - but I couldn't find the emlx-files in my .../library/mail folder! *There don't seem to be any emlx-files on my system!*
Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong here?
Cheers & thanks for your help :-))

If your mail is still there, it has to be inside your individual mailboxes in ~/Library/Mail/[name of mailbox folder]; otherwise you could not see it or read it when you open Mail on 10.3. Each mailbox is named like this (example only): [email protected], and inside that folder are individual folders for your Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Deleted messages, etc., and inside those folders are your messages for each mailbox associated with that email account. Look inside those folders to find out if any messages are there; they should be.
On your 10.3 partition, Copy your ~/Library/Mail folder to the Desktop of your 10.4 partition so you're working from a copy in 10.4 when you try to export and import mail to 10.4 Mail. It's also easier to look inside your account folders instead of going back and forth between different OS X partitions.
As for downloading and installing Eudora to try exporting from Mail 10.3 and Importing into Mail 10.4, .hqx files are an older compression format used for files on the old Mac OS system, so you can download The Unarchiver to decompress the Eudora .hqx file.

  • How to import old mail messages

    Hi all
I have a new iMac. I have setup all my email accounts already. However I have about 2000 old email messages saved on two external hard drives ( through backups)
How can I import and seamlessly integrate the old mail messages into the new iMac ?
    Thanks

The normal method depends upon how you backed up your old mail. If you backed up the entire Mail folder and its content then use Mail's Import Mail option under the File menu. Select the Apple Mail option then click on the OK button. Navigate in the File Open dialog to the /Mail/Mailboxes/ folder. Select and click on the Open button. Check the mailboxes you wish to import then click on the Import button. Your mailboxes will appear in Mail's sidebar under the Imported Mail heading.

  • Clean Install of Leopard - How to import old mail?

So I did a clean install of Leopard as per recommendation from a guy at the genius bar. I backed up my library folder on an external drive before doing the install. The guy at the store said I could import the old emails/ mailbox/ folder structure and addresses into the new mail and address book using the files from my library.
I tried to do this using the import functionality but it is putting everything in a mailbox called import.
Does anyone know the proper way to do this? Should I replace the mail files with my old ones?
Also should I use the import function for iPhoto or just drag all the photos over to the application? iPhoto is also having problems importing.
    Thanks for the help.

That is what the guy at the Apple store had told me to do and what I have been attempting to do. However, it does not work.

  • How to I import old mail from Netscape to Mail?

I need to move old email from a Netscape account to a Mac Mail account. The Netscape client is still in use, but I must move from Snow Leopard to Lion and I read that Netscape will not work in Lion. So...
I located the Mail folder within Library>Mozilla>Profiles>(Account Name)>XXXX.slt>Mail>Inbox (the Inbox with no suffix). I transferred this file to a jump drive. I verified, I think, that this is the correct file by opening it with Text Edit, and it indeed has email from 2001 to today. The file is 1.58gb in size.
I tried to import it into Mail by adding .mbox to the file and selecting .MBOX in the import window. It seems to import, but the resulting mailbox has mail only from 2001 to 2003.
    Any sugestions? Thanks.

What OS are you using now?  Still SL?   I went straight from SL to LION 10.7.5.
I can't go to ML on my older MBP 17".   Check at the Apple store if you need more reassurance.
The trick is to follow the import instructions and select the main profile "account name" folder.  From there a list of all mailboxes is offered.  Pick and choose the ones you want.
You may have an issue if your single box is excessively large (way over a gig) but I did not.  Better to break them up in smaller boxes first in Netscape if you can.
LION and ML will likely break LOTS of things you rely on (for me Office, mail, contacts, toast, utilities)  Luckily, transferring my Netscape mail was not one of them.
BTW, I still think NS is a better email client and Palm is a better calendar/journal, but apple gets to decide these things for us now.  As with iCloud.  As with maps.

  • Can't open old mail after upgrade to yosemite

can't open old mail after upgrade to yosemite OS X 10.10. My old mail was version 6.6. The new version is 8.0. What to do??

How are you trying to open it, and what exactly happens?

  • Iphone importing old reviewed mail

Sorry I had to repost this again but I really didn't get any solid answers the last time. Not sure if anyone is getting this but I normally check mail on my iMac. I rarely check mail on iPhone but when I do it pulls in old mail that I've already checked all the way up to a week ago! This started happening a bit after the 3.1.2 update. Like right now I have supposedly 35 unchecked emails registering & that's wrong.
I'm not running anything fancy, just POP3, no Mobile ME or gmail or yahoo mail.

Since it's a POP account, the iPhone mail will retrieve mail until is is deleted from the mail server. On your Mac, that's controlled by your Mail > Preferences > Accounts "Advanced" tab where you can set the mail to be removed from the server after retrieving a message immediately, after one day, after one week, or after one month.
On your iPhone, the setting is in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar where you select the Account and scroll down to "Advanced" and under the incoming settings choose "Delete from server" never, or after seven days, or when removed from inbox.
As I like to keep a complete email record on my computer, I have the phone mail setting set to never so that I'll always get the mail on my computer regardless of whether or not I check it on the phone. My Mac is set to remove the server copy immediately upon retrieval. With this setup, my phone never sees messages I have seen on my Mac, but my Mac sees all messages.
    Have I hopelessly confused you?

  • Migrating Tiger mail to Yosemite

I've copied the whole user/Library/Mail folder from an old Tiger machine to a new(ish) Yosemite machine (also "Mail Attachments").  However, when opening Mail.app on the Yosemite machine, it doesn't seem to recognize the old data at all, coming up blank and asking to set up accounts.  How do I get it to recognize the old Mail data?  I've searched around but found nothing so far.

    Hi Neil,
Once you have set up Mail on your new(ish) computer you will want to import the mailboxes. Use the steps in this article -
Mail (Yosemite): Import or export mailboxes
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How can I get my old mail account back?

I f&%€ up and deleted my old mail account after I had added my new one ( I've changed ISP). So all old mails disappeared.
Is it possible to restore them my self? Or do I have to go to the Mac doctor?
    I'm greatful for all help

    Hi John and thank you.
    I use Mail.
I deleted the settings for the old account by mistake - I just thought I wouldn't need it anymore after having set up the new one - and suddenly the inbox was empty. A not so nice surprise
However I managed to find a folder named Mail with a POP - folder in it, in the trash can, which I dragged to my desktop. But I haven't been able to import it.
I found some useful earlier threads and intructions from some David Gimeno, so I removed the .mbox extension from the INBOX.mbox file.
BUT still, Mail won't import. It says it doesn't find any valid mbox files.
The INBOX.mbox is about 12 Mb, so I recconed there would be something in it.

  • Mail started new again... how do I get my old Mail back?

Mail asked for info like when it's first installed, now all my drafts and marked infos are gone. I want my old mail back!
I found it in the Library... but how do I make it see it now?
I erased the new, but when I opened, there was again
    Strange...

Most such cases happen because of a shortage (even if temporary) of free disk space on your hard drive, or if partitioned, on the boot partition. The preference is overwritten, but not the message data itself.
If this happened, simply re-enter the account setup info, and then be sure to DECLINE any prompt to Import. When the accounts are again set up, Mail can rediscover the existing mailboxes and account folders.

  • After crash, how do stop apple mail (os 10.7.5, applemail 5.3) from pulling in old mail on reboot

I've got a frustrating problem and need your help.
My Mac pro (os 10.7.5) froze so I was forced to push the button to restart.
After reboot, apple mail 5.3 auto opened and pulled in thousands of old mail that were long ago deleted.
Now, is there a way to mass delete the new/old mail that reappeared without losing what mail I wanted to save?
More importantly, how can I avoid this the next time my mac freezes because it's not the first time it's happened and it's does not happen on every crash.
    Please advise
    Thanks

The mail that keeps coming back is what is still sitting on your mail server. If this is a POP mail account you can configure Mail to delete mail that has been downloaded.
Click Mail in the menu bar and select Preferences. In Preferences, click Accounts and select your mail account on the left, then click Advanced. There you can decide on the setting you want: "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message", to for example After one day.
If you have an IMAP account  - say gmail - the process is different. Post back if that is what you have.

  • Mail expunge error and old mail switching to new mail status

Everything started when I set to enabled in mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages.
I was looking for a way to seach in the content of the message for the mails.
Then the first error appeared: the mails when I read those mails returned by themselves to the state of unread.
Then I disabled again the optin: mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages,
but the error continued. and all my mails (more than 1200) were set automatically to the "new" mail status each time that I started the mail program.
Now I created a mailbox named "old" when I move the new messages that I have read to that file.
But now the mail program uses the memory constantly.
with out the mail, the computer memory is near 5%, but when I start the mail program and use it constantly, the memory goes to 100% until I receive the mail expunge error.
The machine has 4Ghz ram, and the mail program uses all until I got the error, I am using a G5, dual cpu, 2ghz, mac osx server. There are no other programs using the memory.
1)how can I configure the mail to avoid the expunge error?
2)how I can configure the mail to keep the mails that I just read to an old state (avoiding those to restart their state to "new")?
3)it is possible to do searchs in all the content of the messages?
    thanks
    Alberto

    You’re welcome.
Well, not knowing what the problem really is, and since it apparently started to happen after you changed some settings, I’d try setting up Mail again from scratch and import your mail back afterwards.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk, try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
    8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • My Mail in Yosemite doesn't work!

I am having problem with my Mail in Yosemite OS, hotmail is fine, only gmail has problem. I can receive emails, but i can send mails with gmail. Every time I try to send an email with my gmail in Mail, it tells that "Cannot send message using the server smtp.gmail.com:(my gmail user name)." it also says "The gmail SMTP connection to server smtp.gmail.com failed."
What should I do? I need to send tons of emails each day, and now i have to write my emails on my iMac, then open it in my iPhone 6 to send emails!

Erik,  I was having the same problem.  this is what I did and it appeared to take care of it.  I must have had an old password in my "send mail server" that was causing my issue.  BTW, I was getting the same error that you mentioned.
    1. Open mail and then Open Preferences -> Accounts Information
    2. Click on dropdown next to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and click "Edit SMTP Server List"
    3. Click on "Advanced"
    3. Change "User Name" to "[email protected]" and re-enter your password (Password was my problem)
    4. Click OK.
The dropdown should no longer say (Offline)
