Import statement throws exception

Hey,
I just added the code into my program to have a tray icon as is now supported in Java 1.6.0 "Mustang". Really easy and straight forward to do.
Trouble is that the program will throw an exception if run on 1.4.2 or 1.5.0. The icon is a convenience not a necessity so I want to be able to allow the program to run on any of these platforms.
Is there a way to import the classes other than using the import command and allow the program to catch the exception and respond with something like JOptionPane.showmessagedialog(frame,"Upgrade to Mustang to have tray icon");
I thought about catching the exception when the class with the import statements is called, but that would cause the object to be null and would cause NullPointerExceptions all over my application.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
DAvid

One way round it would be to use Class.forName() to obtain the class and then call the methods using reflection. If the class isn't found, catch the ClassNotFoundException and ignore it.
It's not pretty but it'd work.
Import statements are only used at compile time, though. Your runtime exception is produced when the class is accessed in the code. Nothing to do with imports. You can import all the classes you like and as long as the code doesn't need to resolve them at runtime, it'll work just fine.

  • State Pattern throwing exceptions

    I've seen the state pattern applied to a situation where I am not sure if a state pattern applies.
    Can you please tell me if the state pattern is good for this situation?
    It is that only a few operations can be called for a certain state. If you call "wrong" operations for that state, an exception will be thrown.
    The examples for the state pattern I've seen didn't include throwing exceptions if a wrong operation has been called for a certain state. So I don't know if state pattern applies to this situation or not. Can you please tell me the answer?

    It is that only a few operations can be called for a
    certain state. If you call "wrong" operations for
    that state, an exception will be thrown.You could always throw and IllegalStateException.
    The problem is that this makes the pattern much less flexible. If the caller needs to know which state they are calling the method on, you can't easily rearrange the states or introduce new ones. You end up with a complicated seized-up pattern.
    I have actually done this but the only state that would thrown the excepton was the 'done' state. If you are doing this throughout the use of the states, I probably would reevaluate your design.
    Are you sure that you cannot tweak the methods or incorporate more into the pattern to resolve this? Can you just make these states do nothing when those methods are called?

  • Besides throwing exceptions and the "return;" statement

    Besides throwing exceptions and the "*return*" statement, what else clauses could complete a code block abruptly?
    Originally I thought System.exit() should be one of that kind, and I was totally puzzled by the fact that finally clause dose not work with System.exit(). But after a few thoughts, it becomes clear to me that System.exit() dose not even complete a code block, let alone completing a code block abruptly. So is there other logic that could make a code block complete abruptly?
    My question originates from paragraphs in <Thinking in JAVA>, which claim that, I quote,
    "Unfortuantely, there's a flaw in Java's exception implementation. Although exceptions are an indication of a crisis in your program and should never be ignored, it's possible for an exception to simply be lost. This happens with a particular configuration using a finally clause"..."This is a rather serious pitfall, since it means that an exception can be completely lost, and in a far more subtle and difficult -to-detect fashion..."..."Perhaps a future version of Java will repair this problem"...
    After check with JLS, it seams that it is legitimate to ignore the reason for the abrupt completion of the try block, if the corresponding finally block completes abruptly. I think whether this is a "pitfall, flaw" or not depends on how deeply we language users understand the purpose of the finally clause and it is better for me to know all the possible reasons for a code block to complete abruptly.
    So, besides throwing exceptions and the "*return*" statement, what else clauses could complete a code block abruptly?

    warnerja wrote:
    Case 1: Normal flow (no exception is about to be bubbled to the caller before getting to the finally block) - I'd say we want an exception back due to the failure to close the stream.
    Case 2: The finally block was entered through an exception about to be bubbled to the caller - the caller can only get one or the other exception back, either the original exception or the one indicating the failure to close the stream. The finally block has no access to the pending exception however and is unaware of whether there is an exception pending or not. All it knows is an exception occurred during the execution of the finally block, and should throw that or wrap it in another exception - same handling as in Case 1.
    try {
      write();
      flush();
    finally {
      try {
        close();
      catch (...) {
        log();
    }The flush() at the end of try seems kind of redundant, since close() calls flush() anyway. The benefit is that the try statement completion matches the try block ("real work") completion.
    If we get to the end of the try block with no exception, then write() and flush() have succeeded and the data is where it needs to be. All that's left is to release the I/O resource, which will always be done in finally.
    If there's an exception in the try block, it is propagated out, so we know of any failure that occurred doing the "real work." The I/O resource is still released in finally.
    Regardless of how the try block completed, releasing the resource does not affect how the try statement completes, and hence does not supersede how our "real work" completes, which is all we care about. We still log any close() errors for later investigation. What matters to our program is whether all the data was written, and the completion of write() and flush() tells us that.

  • Throwing Exception in MApping

    Hi All,
    Iam reffering this Blog to throw an Exception in mapping.
    The specified item was not found.
    Doubt
    1) After Importing the .Jar file into IRUnder Import Archives, while writing the UDFin Imports----what should be the imports i need to give????Is this is related to my Import Archive Name??
    2)In UDF iam not mentioning my JAVA code at all, So How this UDF will reffer my Imported .Jar file code???
    Regards

    Hi Suman,
    YOu have to import the jar files if you want to use either JAVA mapping or XSLT mapping.
    For message mapping, you DO NOT need to import any jar files at all.
    Only, you need to have a import statement for the package that you need. This is not relevant to any JAR files you import.(If you are using message mapping, you do not need to import any jar files in the imported archives at all).

  • Function module JOB_CLOSE throwing exception

    Hello,
    We have a batch job which has 2 steps:
    1) Step 1 uses job_open, job_submit and job_close and immediately schedules batch job A/P_ACCOUNTS which in turn creates batch input sessions A/P_ACCOUNTS.
    2) Step 2 Processes A/P_ACCOUNTS sessions created yesterday or today.
    In few cases, job_close is throwing exception job_close_failed. I believe that error is coming due to non availability of work processes. Job A/P_Accounts is defined as a class C batch job. There is a check in the FM job_close which does the following check:
    - if the class of a batch job is B or C, it calculates the number of free work processes. If there are no work processes available then JOB_CLOSE throws JOB_CLOSE_FAILED exception.
    - If the class is u2018Au2019, it skips this check.
    We have an option of changing the class of batch job to A but there are some system critical jobs that are running as class A.
    My question is:
    In the code, JOB_CLOSE has been called for scheduling the job A/P_ACCOUNTS with parameter start immediately. Can anyone please let me know what will happen if function JOB_CLOSE is not called with start immediately option? Will the batch job A/P_ACCOUNTS wait till the time work processes are available?
    Or, can anything else be done to solve the issue?
    Regards,

    HI,
    This is my experience with job_close..
    when i was working in zprograms then i was able to scedule it any time i wanted..
    but in my standard program when i tried it didn't worked....
    so i have to use that option of starting it immediately..
    and then it is working fine..
    now if i schedule 5 jobs... one after another..
    its get queued up...and once the processor is free...its working..

  • Javac(1.4.2) gives error in import statement

    Hi All,
    I am facing a surprising problem. I have 2 java class files. I write the import statement for second one in the first one. There is no package & these are in the same directory. I have compiled the second one. But when I try to compile the First one. Javac throws error at import statement like below :
    D:\Clubs\oct\6>javac -d . ManojTest.java
    ManojTest.java:1: '.' expected
    import SessionBean;
    ^
    1 error
    My Java Files are as below :
    import SessionBean;
    public class ManojTest
         public static void main(String args[])
    //ManojTest.java
    public class SessionBean
         public static void main(String args[])
    //SessionBean.java
    I have compiled SessionBean.java successfully but when I try to compile ManojTest.java I get error mentioned above.
    However this probelm comes when I use j2se 1.4.2.. but works in j2se 1.3.1..
    Another way could be I use package structure.
    But I can't do any of these, as I have to port my big project to j2se1.4.2.. from j2se1.3.1.. (Live project is running on Tomcat).
    Problems is similar in Unix & Windows both.
    Is this javac compiler issue or there is some setting which I can make.
    I have already included . (dot) in PATH & CLASSPATH environment varibales.
    Please help me out if there is any way around this, as i am stuck up in between
    thank you
    Manoj :confused:

    Use a package and then add that package in your classpathOr don't use a package, leave the file in the default (noname) package, and don't use the import statement. Java will find it in the default package without the import.
    Explicit import statements from the default package are no longer allowed

  • Length error occured in IMPORT statement

    Hello everyone,
    i hv one requirment in PO print(ME23N). in po print asset no nt display without changing other format.
    so that i first copy both smartform and driver program, in that i made certain changes such that i declare the patameter p_ebeln and i comment to data statement of p_ebeln & p_ebeln = nest-objky.
    then i join asset no (anek-anln1) with the help of inner join. then in smartform i gave condition that if bsart = 'ZCAP'
    wa_final-anln1 = gv_anln1.
    endif.
    i import gv_anln1 in smartform and exported in deriver program.
    both are synthetically currect but when i gave print preview dump is occured.
    length error occured in IMPORT statement
    Error analysis
        An exception occurred that is explained in detail below.
        The exception, which is assigned to class 'CX_SY_IMPORT_MISMATCH_ERROR', was
         not caught in
        procedure "%GLOBAL_INIT" "(FORM)", nor was it propagated by a RAISING clause.
        Since the caller of the procedure could not have anticipated that the
        exception would occur, the current program is terminated.
        The reason for the exception is:
        During import the system discovered that the target object has
        a different length than the object to be imported.
    what i do?

    Hello,
    can u send me coding for that?
    program line is already created for that
    and their first coding is like that,
    if gv_bsart = 'ZCAP'.
    wa_final-matnr = space.
    endif.
    and in text they fetch matnr no.
    but as per requirement they want asset no when bsart = 'ZCAP'
    how that asset no will come.
    matnr comes there is bsart is other that ZCAP, but bsart = ZCAP they want asset no instead of matnr.

  • Unused packages in import statement

    Guyz,
    Can anyone throw some light on this ?
    Does using a lot of unused packages in import statement of a jsp affects its performance in terms of page loading ?
    Thanks.

    I have just found the answer for my question in another forum.

  • Import statement *not* required?

    Can someone explain this to me? I was following along a
    simple AS3 example (in the design video workshop) where a "Power
    Button" has some MouseEven CLICK event handling applied to it with
    a trace statement as the resulting handled function. Really simple
    basic example. The import statement is import
    flash.events.MouseEvent.
    How come removing the import statement does not produce an
    error?
    Reference:
    import flash.events.MouseEvent;
    myButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, myButtonClicked);
    function myButtonClicked(event:MouseEvent):void {
    trace('do Something');
    }

    midimidi,
    > So to be clear...if the AS is on the main timeline,
    import statements
    > are not needed, and if the AS is external and imported,
    import
    > statements are needed.
    That's a general rule of thumb, but not 100% applicable.
    > Are there any other exceptions to that, or does that go
    for all AS3
    > classes?
    There are exceptions, and the easiest way to find them is to
    leave out
    your import statements and plug away ... sooner or later,
    you'll get a
    compiler error, and then you'll know. :)
    >> It did strike me *** odd though, an imported .as
    file uses the same
    >> publish settings as code on the timeline. So why
    treat them differently?
    FLA files have publish settings, but AS files don't. They're
    just text
    files. I hear what you're saying ... they end up getting
    compiled along
    with / into the some FLA anyway -- and that FLA does have
    classpaths
    listed -- but those same AS files might be compiled in Flex
    Builder 2 or
    some 3rd party compiler. It would probably make good sense to
    require the
    import statement for inline FLA code, but not everyone is a
    hardcore
    programmer, and Adobe knows it. Nothing is *hurt* by using
    import in FLAs,
    but for folks who just want to do light programming, the
    convenience of not
    having to use it is nice.

  • Import statement vanishes while saving metadata

    Hi
    I am facing a strange problem.When I am saving metadata the import statements are erased from the //begin import and // end section in the implementation section of a view.But all packages are present.
    Pease help

    Check if there are errors with the metadata of your project, see "Problems" view in Eclipse.
    Another possibility may be an exception in the NWDS, open the "PDE runtime" -> "Error log" view.
    Do you find anything that might cause the problem?

  • 'Build stopped' when NWDS generate import statement in Component Controller

    Hi,
        I add method in Component Controller the code work fine if the code not require to import class. When the code need to import the class, and NWDS automatically import for them. The error occur like below while the code is complied.
    Build stopped due to an error: Compile failed; see the compiler error output for details.      [Error: com.sap.tc.buildplugin.DefaultPlugin  Thread[Worker-44,5,main]]
      I have to delete all import statements in import block like below.
    //@@begin imports
    import com.sap.demo.employee_exc__wd.wd.comp.employeecomp.wdp.IPrivateEmployeeComp;
    //@@end
    Conclusion :  The code will not be compiled if they have import statement that NWDS automatically generate.
    P.S i use NWDS7.2
    Please help me solve this issue.
    Many Thanks

    Hi John Wu,
        First of all thank for your reply.  I investigate the root cause and found that i can not import the class from another project (EJB project (Local Home or Local Object)). So i can only import JAVA lib, if i put import statement to import home interface from another EJB project, the code can not be build. What i do is
    - Add EJB project in the project build path.
    - Add EJB project in Project Reference.
    Is thay all?
    What task do i need to do more?
    There are 2 error show while compling the code.
    The 1st one :

  • Throws Exception - a newcomer...

    I have written a small amount of code that takes information from a text file and displays it in a GUI (swing) - this is called my RasterDisplay class. However, I am now creating another part of the GUI which will have a button that makes a new RasterDisplay. However, when I try and call my RasterDisplay constructor from within my actionPerformed method (see below) It tells me I have an "unhandled Exception type Exception". I can't throw Exception in the actionPerformed method so how do I get this method to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am a total newcomer to Java and can't make head nor tail of related topics in all the forums...
    Cheers!
