    HELP!!!
    SGAREN

    Hello Sally,
    First, I have only heard/read good things about the book Steve recommends. It is on my to buy list one day. Been awaiting a long deserved vaction to pick it up to read.
    I approach XML files pretty much like I do any text file I am sent in that I will import or copy/paste a text file into a frame in ID and begin setting my styles. With XML, though, I first clean it up, move closing tags up to their logical close lines, remove spurious codes that mean something in HTML but don't necessarily belong in the XML file (like &#x2019 which is an apostrophe so I do a search and replace. But for &#xA0; which is a non-breaking space I simply search and replace with a regular space in general), and make sure the XML validates.
    Validation is much like making sure an HTML page is formed properly. I use an XML editor (XML BluePrint) and a text editor (UltraEdit) for these tasks. If I had to only have one or the other, I suppose the XML editor is what I would use.
    I always show the import options when I import the XML and make sure that I link to the file.
    So once a sample of the XML is on a page in ID (via File | Import XML), I highlight text within a tag, say like in your example above, the Providor name, and make it like I want and then create a new style. I generally name the styles as per the XML tag. Later on, that makes mapping tags to styles a little easier.
    Once I set up all the styles preliminarily, I map the tags to styles. You can do that either via the Tags palette or via the Structure Pane that will appear once the XML is imported. In both cases, it is found via the flyout menu at the top right of their respective windows.
    After mapping my styles to the tags, I select the root element in the Structure Pane (the topmost element. In your sample above it is "providors" and delete it. This removes the XML in your ID file. But the styles and tags are still present.
    Then I import the XML again and look to makes sure all the tags/elements are styled as intended. I then correct any errors/ommissions. Then...I'll delete the XML again and import the full XML file.
    I can upload what I did with your XML sample above so you can compare it to your source file if you would like. You would then see how/where I moved tags. Now, moving the tags is only "necessary" to avoid all the extra blank paragraphs. That can be accomplished by ID's search/replace, too. But I like to start out with the XML cleaned up, so I take the few minutes to do it.
    Take care, Mike

  • CS2 AS: Scripted "Import XML" is not working (like manual import does)

    I have problem where importing a XML (merge import + delete unmatched) by script simply doesnt work, where the manual import works 100% fine!!??
    (I'm exporting the XML, refill it with new text data (localisation process actually), and bring the xml back to commit the change in the Indesign document).
    With the script, the XML get imported as a child in the XML
    I have xml structure like:
    root
    node
    and get something like
    root
    node
    root
    node
    My code looks like this (sorry for the formatting):
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS2"
    tell XML import preferences
    set create link to XML to false
    set ignore unmatched incoming to true
    set ignore whitespace to false
    set import style to merge import
    set import text into tables to false
    set import to selected to false
    set repeat text elements to false
    set remove unmatched existing to true
    end tell
    try
    import XML (document 1) from pFilePath
    on error pmsg
    display dialog pmsg
    end try
    end tell
    Is there something obvious that i'm misssing??
    ps: I have checked the XML structure correspondance already.. but i dont think that's the cause of problem as the manual import is working.
    Thanks for any help!
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
    If you can see the behavior in the user interface, you can see it in scripting. I think it makes perfect sense to have the XML import preferences set at the document level, because some documents need one set of preferences; other documents need another. I think (hope) that the user documentation covers the differences between application and document preferences (if not, I do, in my book).
    If you see a preferences object on both the application and the document, assume you want to use the document preferences. Unless you're trying to set preferences for new documents.
    Thanks,
    Ole

    Is this by design?
    When I select "Append Content" I get a (new) table with the formatting (column widths) as specified in the updated aid:ccolwidth and of course, the updated content. When merging content are you giving up all rights to updating formatting at the same time?
    Thanks in advance for any insights.

    Hello,
    The existence check on the Salutation descriptor is likely check cache, as it is the default. Because of this, when you merge the Salutation with id=2, it will check the cache and not find it and so register it as a new object instead. You have 2 options, the first is to read it instead of creating it new. The second is to change your existence checking option so that it will either go tothe database or assume existence so that it is more appropriate for how you intend to use these types of objects in your mappings. For instance, if you never plan to create new ones, assume existence might be more appropriate.
    I suspect though that for most applications, reading the object first is the best option performance wise.
    Best Regards,
    Chris

  • Converting XML structure to SQL string

    Hi,
    how can I convert an existing XML structure into a SQL string? It's important to do this manually, because there are additional data necessary to complete the recordset.
    The XML structure is:
    <File>
    <Recordset>
    <Column>Data</Column>
    </Recordset>
    </File>
    The additional data are 4 columns for each recordset to implement into the SQL string.
    The SQL string should be something like
    "INSERT INTO table (Add_Column, Column, Column, Column) VALUES (Add_Data, Data, Data, Data)"
    If anyone has source code performing operations like that I'd be grateful 'cause I'm quite new to Java and have not the experience in such transform ops.

    Which package includes xml sax?You can download it from,
    http://java.sun.com/xml/download.html.
    I can send you some sample pgms too, if you want.If you would, I'd be grateful.

  • Converting string data from a web service respons into XML structure of XI

    Hi,
    We receive a string structure from a web service.
    The string structure has an xml type format, that is all the tags and its content are in one line .
    The WSDL file of the webservice defines its response structure as a string type.
    How do i convert this string into proper XML structure (predefined by me in Integration repository).
    OR how do i make XI understand this string as an XML structure for further processing.
    Later i have to map this XML message type into IDoc.
    Himani

    Hi Himani,
    Please find the code for ur requirement -
    String need to parse -<response_webservice><from_date>20080101</from_date><to_date>20080202</to_date></response_webservice>
    Below mentioned code will convert it to -<MT_DATA><FROMDATE>20080202</FROMDATE><TODATE>20080101</TODATE></MT_DATA>
    Create a Message type and map it like this using java mapping ( no need to use Graphical mapping).
    Use MT_DATA as source and map it to your target structure .

  • Mapping flat xml file to xml Structure

    Hi all,
    i have to map an xml file, wich is incoming via a RFC call in a flat import field, to a xml-Structure. The xml Structure has the same Structure except that it is not flat but even as a xml-Structure in the Repository. Ist ther a way to make a 1:1 - Mapping?
    Regards Mathias

    Hi,
    This can be done very easily using Java Mapping.
    Parse the flat xml String using Dom4j and directly set this as the target structure.
    eg code:
    public void execute(InputStream in, OutputStream out) throws StreamTransformationException{
    String flatXml = "the flat xml string";
    Document doc = DocumentHelper.parseText(flatXml) ;
    out.write(doc.asXML().getBytes());

    Hi,

  • Importing XML Tags in a document

    Hello,
    I've been trying to import XML Tags in a .indd i created, using the Java API but it does not seem to work (the tags content don't update when i export the document as PDF).  I did the same actions in the InDesign CS4 GUI and it worked like it's supposed to.
    I ran the InDesign server using that command: InDesignServer -iorfile c:\ior.txt -pluginpath Server\Corba
    I included the .indd file, XML tags file and the Java code I wrote.
    EDIT:
    Also, document.getModified() is FALSE, even after calling document.loadXMLTags(...).
    When I exports the tags, all I get is this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
    <Root colorindex="0"><Tag colorindex="35"/></Root>
    document.countTextFrames() returns 4, which is what is expected.  However document.countXMLTags() returns 2, i'm guessing it's because all my tags are named <Tag...> (+ the <Root> element).  Could that be the cause of my problems?
    any help will be appreciated, thanks

    Import XML imports the entire XML file, including the tags and the content, into the document. In the UI, the result would be seen in the Structure View. You can then work with the imported tagged content.
    Load XML tags simply loads the tags into the tag list. In the UI, the result would be seen in the tags panel. (This command is also available from the tags panel.) No XML content is imported; only the tag list is populated. This is used when you just want the tags from a document, and you don't want the content. You can then tag new content using the same tags as the XML file.

  • Error when import XML

    I am dealing with a INDD file with XML structure, after import the XML there is always an error occured when I validate it
    How to declare it in DTD? Or any way to avoid it?

    Especially if you are importing XML with tables, I would recommend creating an ID document with tables, either use the auto-tagging or create your own tags based upon your XML, then exporting it to look how the XML is formed.
    Using the namespace as part of the table element should look roughly like this in your XML:
    <Table xmlns:aid="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/4.0/" aid:table="table" aid:trows="8" aid:tcols="5">
    The above is simply from a quick export of a table in ID. But note that the definitions, the declaration, of what the element parts are follows the namespace portion.

  • Import XML to InDesign

    New to XML in InDesign, I have a few question, so if you only can answer one or two, please do so.
    1. Is there a way to get InDesign to display in the structure the content of the tag, rather than the tag name over and over again?
    2. Can you make a search in the Structure, XML file in InDesign? I know once you have it on the page you can show where it is in the structure, was looking for the same function vice versa.
    3. We get the data from the App developers, and the data is very messy, lots of spaces, returns etc, which seems legit for the digital version, but in InDesign we have to clean all this up, so when we reimport the data every time with updated content, we have to go through and apply all those manual changes again. What wold be the proper way to tackle this?
    4. When we update the XML file later, do we have to update the whole file, or can you specify which section you want to update. Because we do a lot of Typography after inporting, i assume we have to redo this once the XML gets updated.
    5. What happens with all the duplicats? Every time you copy and paste a content group, new XML entries, also when you duplicate a page.
    Thanks, Dimitri

    1. Turn on "Show Text Snippets" to display the beginning of text.
    2. Double click an xml-element in the structure pane or right-click and "Go to item"
    3.  You can clean up the text in the layout with grep find-replace queries (there are scripts that allow make a series of queries in one go). And by script it's possible to clean up xml-elements themselves – e.g. remove returns from certain elements
    4. As far as I know, you can only merge or append xml-file. You may want to import xml-file as external link and edit it in another app, but I think you’ll lose formatting in InDesign after updating.
    5. Xml-elements are duplicated as well.

  • Import Project Structure (Business Blueprint) into Solution Manager

    Hi,
    we are searching for a way to import a project or process structure from external formats like MS Visio, BPML, XML into Solman SOLAR01.
    I think there should be a possibility via XML.
    Anybody knows how to import xml-files into SolMan Blueprint and which structure the file has ?
    Thanks for any suggestions !
    Steven

    Hi Satish,
    It would create a project that can be see in SOLAR_PROJECT_ADMIN, SOLAR01, SOLAR02 just like any other project.
    The BPR is something entirely different. I think you meant Business Process Structure. Correct?

  • Importing xml is not working

    Hello i am trying to import an xml file into a document but its not allowing the import.
    Let me clarify a bit, i have allready imported the same xml in about 50-60 different documents without any problems, but now i have a document that does not allow me to import the xml.
    After looking a bit deeper i found the following:
    You can see that the parameter "Only import elements that match existing structure" is checked. When i uncheck this param, the xml is imported correctly.
    Now i tried to simulate is via scripting but with no success.
    Here's what i tried:
    InDesign.app.xmlImportPreferences.importToSelected = true;
    InDesign.app.xmlImportPreferences.importStyle = XMLImportStyles.MERGE_IMPORT;
    InDesign.app.xmlImportPreferences.ignoreUnmatchedIncoming = false;

    And the document import xml settings are the same as in the screenshot? Also, you are using extendscript, my example is actionscript and i've noticed quite some differneces between the 2 in the past (although they use the same API).
    Edit: There is also the fact that i didnt test your code ( ignorent as i am) and didnt see that your example actually DOES work. Thank you very much for your help,
    On a sidenote: can you explain me why it works if you call:
    InDesign.app.activeDocument.xmlImportPreferences
    but not when you call:
    InDesign.app.xmlImportPreferences
    My thought was that when you call it on the document, then it's only for the current document, but when you call it on the application, then it is for all documents that get processed by that application.
    Is this wrong? Or is it the way it is meant to be?

  • "Cells too small to split" importing XML

    My hubris in presuming to advise other people about importing XML last week has been punished, it seems.
    I am trying to populate a table with data from an XML document. The XML has the following structure:
    order
      basket
       quantity.../quantity
       title.../title
       price.../price
       quantity.../quantity
       title.../title
       price.../price
    /basket
    /order
    (Actually there's more to it, but that will give you the idea.) I've created a placeholder table with a single row, tagged the table 'basket' and tagged each cell with one of the element names. The containing frame is tagged 'order'.
    If there is only a single item (quantity, title, price triple) in the basket, it works a treat. If there's more than one, though, I get the bewildering error message "Cells too small to split". They aren't: I can split the row horizontally by hand, and then import two items.
    I'm using CS3, but the same thing happened when I tried in the CS4 demo. I did Google for the error message and found one other person asking for help with a similar problem but he didn't get any replies.
    Has anyone seen this message or got any clues to offer?

    I have the exact same message here. What in my case the issue seems to be is that I have a linked XML file that I update. This works great until I add a new table to the original XML file. Then my update gives the "Cells too small to split" error, and it will not update.
    Creating a new document and importing the XML from scratch does work. For us not the ideal way to work, since I now mannualy have to do a "override styles" on each table again.
    I have reset my table-styles to a style with an embedded body-cellstyle with 0 inset. I would have no clue as to how to set a minumum row-height and width in a cell or table style though.
    Would be great if anyone has found a solution in the meantime.

  • XML gateway with multiple XML structures??

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to import data using XML gateway with different XML structures. Third party system sometimes will not provide certain tags itself if there is no data for the tag like contacts in below sample xmls. In that case we need to ignore those tags (CONTACTS in below sample). As per my understanding, we must have tag in XML though it may not have any value.
    We have 2 XMLs
    XML1 for supplier with contacts
    <SUPPLIER>
    <NAMES>
    <NAME1>XYZ </NAME1>
    <NAME2>ABC</NAME2>
    </NAMES>
    <SITE>
    <SITE1>XYZ </SITE1>
    <SITE2>ABC</SITE2>
    </SITE>
    <CONTACT>
    <CONTACT1>XYZ </CONTACT1>
    <CONTACT2>ABC</CONTACT2>
    </CONTACT>
    </SUPPLIER>
    XML2 for supplier without contacts
    XML1
    <SUPPLIER>
    <NAMES>
    <NAME1>XYZ1 </NAME1>
    <NAME2>ABC1</NAME2>
    </NAMES>
    <SITE>
    <SITE1>XYZ1 </SITE1>
    <SITE2>ABC1</SITE2>
    </SITE>
    </SUPPLIER>
    Can we upload data in both these xmls using only one generic dtd and xgm using XML gateway which will skip any missing tag.
    Thanks
    Rishi

    Hi, you can FOR XML PATH for a finer degree of control over your XML.  Use the @ symbol to create attributes.  Here's a simple example:
    DECLARE @t TABLE ( rowId INT IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY, [address] VARCHAR(50), city VARCHAR(30), floor INT, suite INT, doorType VARCHAR(20) )
    INSERT INTO @t VALUES
    ( '123 Fake St', 'Springfield', 10, 512, 'Metal' )
    SELECT
    [address] AS "Address",
    city AS City,
    [floor] AS "Location/@Floor",
    suite AS "Location/@Suite",
    doorType AS "Location/@DoorType"
    FROM @t
    FOR XML PATH ('Company'), ROOT ('Companies'), ELEMENTS;
