Importing digital photographs in FCP

I recently imported two series of digitalized pictures in two different FCP projects.
In the first case, the MPEG2 compression gave excellent results. In the second case, the quality was not so good as in the first time....
In both cases, the size of the pictures had been adjusted to 2Mo with photoshop after scanning them (they are argentic originals in both cases) at very high definition (several tens of Mo).
What couuld be the reason(s) for such a variability ?
Is the 2 Mo size a proper one or should I use bigger ones ( I used 2 Mo because the projects contained quite a lot of pictures and I was afraid that the project be too big at the end when the music was added..)
Thanks in advance
Bernard

<
The abbreviation Mo seems to mean megabytes in countries other than the USA. We are starting to see it often along with To.
The size of the imported pictures is not relevant since they are not part of the finished movie. Only the rendered video clips of the photos are in the movie.
The differences between your MPEG2 output files could be caused by dozens of subtle factors. No way to know from here, sorry.
Getting superb MPEG2 output is a refined craft and Compressor is fully capable of the task but the interface can be useless in achieving the best results until you spend many hours in the application.
Video is hard, compression is harder.

  • Optimizing digital pictures for FCP projects

When importing digital pictures, I'm finding a lot of "zebra" effects on the photos when zooming in or out.
Is there a format (JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop, etc), size and resolution that is best to conform to prior to importing?
Difference between using it in a SD timeline and HD timeline?

Okay cool - yep I'm using an external Raid 5 as my Capture Scratch
A couple of weird things had happened such as a duplicate Capture Scratch folder and duplicate Audio Render Files folder and a duplicate Render Files folder appearing on my external Raid 5, on the same level as my Final Cut Pro Documents folder (not within it)
Literally: Sonnet d800 Raid5 > Audio Render Files
    Capture Scratch
    FCP Support Profile
    Final Cut Pro Documents
    Media
    Render Files
    STP Edited Media
    STP Projects
    STP Recording Files
    STP Scratch Files
Like I say, I'll go for a complete uninstall and fresh install and hopefully the weirdness won't return :o)
The Capture Scratch folder and Audio Render Files folder and Render Files folder are empty folders but this is a little worrying that they're just choosing to appear where they feel like.

  • Importing Digital Video into FCF6 via ADVC-110

I have FC Studio 6 and am trying to import digital video via Firewire using a ADVC110 purchased at the Apple store. FCP does not recognize the camcorder-ADVC on capture, import, etc. Apparently others on the Web are having similar problems. Does anyone know the setup parameters for FCP and switch selections for the ADVC to make this workflow actually work?
    Thanks,
    DickWalt

If the camera has a firewire port, you should do this (forget the canopus)
Close FCP, turn off the mac and the camera.
Plug the firewire cable in the mac and the camera...make sure the camera is set for playback and not record.
Turn on the camera, then the mac.
Open System Profiler (click on blue apple icon top left, choose About this Mac and select More Info) Click on Firewire in the left pane of the Profiler interface and make sure your camera is recognized. If it's not, your camera is not set for playback or you have a bad FW cable or FW port on the camera or mac.
If it is recognized, open FCP, check your Easy Setup for DV-NTSC, then go to File/Log and Capture and see if you can capture...you should see the image from tape in the capture interface. If so,
Type in a name for the REEL (critical for FCP to recognize the timecode of that particular tape) and then type in a name for the clip(s) in the Description line.
Beyond that there are various methods of capturing, but best is to log each clip, with specific names, then highlight them all and do a Batch Capture. Check the manual for procedure.

  • Audio waveform sync and drifting problems on imported AIF's in FCP 6

    Hi FCP people,
I have been having problems importing bounced audio files into Final Cut Pro 6. I've done a search and can't find anything to help me yet, so here's a new post.
This has happened on two projects: both files are 16-bit 48KHz.
    1) Having finished an edit (HDV 1080/50i timeline) I exported my audio into Soundtrack to finish the audio mix and normalise, and then saved the bounce. When I imported that back into FCP the audio seems to drift. What is particularly strange is that the waveform looks like the audio is in the right place, but the sound comes out before it should. V. Weird!!!
    2) The second file was sent to me from another system. I was given a FCP file (I have a copy of the source footage on my HD and reconnected it). They also sent me the audio mix. Once again, this file seems to drift out of time, yet the waveform looks right.
When I import the video file and audio bounce file into FCPv5 it works ok.
Can anyone help me on this? Or is this a problem with FCP that others are also having?
    Many thanks, Tim

    Hi Zak,
many thanks for your reply, i have contacted Apple and taking your advice and using compressor i have converted the codec H.264 to Apple Pro Res 422 for interlaced material.
I have imported this file and when i drag once again from the viewer to canvas i get the standard box asking to change the sequence to match the clip.
I am still getting the red line above the timeline and bleeping as audio.
    any idea?

  • How to determine the number of pixels of a desired object within a digital photograph?

Hi everyone. I want to determine the number of pixels in an object that is part of a digital photo. I use cameras to film chunks of ice breaking away from ice cliffs or tidewater glaciers. I want to know the size of the ice chunk that my digital photographs capture. I know the width and height of the ice cliff in metres already, so I was thinking that I could convert the equivalent of 1 pixel : ? metres - this is really what I want to do. That way every time I see a chunk of ice breaking off, I can pull up the photo, outline the chunk, calculate how many pixels fill the area of ice removed by the chunk breaking off and convert to metres area 2 - thus giving me my size order. If anyone has ideas on how to do this I would really appreciate it, thanks so much community. I was thinking that Photoshop or Fireworks could help me with this, Ricky

    Thanks gener7 and normfb.
The Photoshop help measurement page is brilliant and I think I can use the info on that page to work out my iceberg sizes. Check out the attached photo - you are looking at an ice cliff - essentially the front of a tidewater glacier that flows in the ocean. I'm a research student and I look at the process of iceberg calving - this is the term we use to define the sudden breaking away or detachment of ice chunks from glaciers that end in the sea.
I used the lasso tool to crop the area of ice lost as a single chunk of ice detached from the ice cliff. At the same time I had the histogram window open. The histogram showed me how many pixels were contained in the cropped area. What I need to do now is work out what 1 pixel is equivalent to in metres. Soon I will have a digital elevation model for the ice cliff that will offer centimetre to metre scale resolution of the surface topography - so that should really help. The photographs I have are taken every 30 seconds - which is brilliant for documenting how the geometry of the ice cliff adjusts in response to detaching ice pieces and also because the ice is moving. I am a research student in Canada, and at the time I took the photos we measured that the ice cliff was advancing at a rate of approximately 12 metres per day! That's pretty fast. The flow of the ice is a first order control on the rate of iceberg production - you are essentially pushing ice into the ocean where it breaks off. I'm having to learn everything Photoshop from scratch...so please bare with me because maybe some of the photoshop questions I ask are simple to most!
I noticed the "integrated density" function on the help sheet you suggested. This function also provides the square number of pixels contained in the cropped area I select...I guess this is similar to the histogram right?
Either way - i just need the scale conversion to go from 1 pixel : metres or cm equivalent. At that point I think I will have to manually select every single iceberg event from my time-lapse photos and do this the manual way!  I have about 800 events to manually digitise and calculate the area for...

  • Not able to import .motn files into FCP

For some reason I'm not able to import .motn files into FCP. While in FCP, I use "send to motion" and uncheck the embed box. After motion opens and I add my motion content, I get the following error when trying to import the .motn file back into FCP "File Error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown". What is strange is that I'm able to create another test FCP project with different media, and everything works fine. All tests and media are done on the same drive.
I'm using the latest updates of everything FCP 5.0.4 and motion 2.0.1
    Any ideas anybody?

  • 5.1 import and export in FCP query

Actually at our recording studio we are making complete 5.1 surround mix for our regional movies.....now I have to import the 5.1 audio in FCP.....how to do it?....infact I even tried with another dvd....its audio was 5.1 but when I import the Files, audio doesnt come as 5.1 in FCP....any other way to import 5.1 in FCP?
Do I require soundcard to do that?
I'm Using Final Cut Pro 7.3 and the audio format is AC3.....Looking for some solution regarding this....

See thamnaul for some help but it's not exactly clear. I've never used 5.1 myself.
To configure Final Cut Pro for 5.1-channel surround sound monitoring using the Match Audio Outputs command
Import a multichannel surround sound QuickTime audio file into Final Cut Pro.Note: Final Cut Pro supports only surround sound audio files that contain the MPEG_5_1_A QuickTime audio track tag and whose channels are ordered in the following sequence: left and right, center, LFE, and left surround and right surround.
Edit the multichannel clip into the Timeline. In most cases, you should place the audio clip starting on track A1 in the sequence.
A clip with six linked clip items appears in the Timeline.
Choose Edit > Linked Selection, and make sure that a checkmark appears next to the Linked Selection menu item.
Select the clip in the Timeline.
Choose Sequence > Match Audio Outputs.
If Final Cut Pro alerts you that your sequence’s audio outputs will change, click OK.Final Cut Pro alerts you that your sequence’s audio outputs have changed to match the stereo and mono groupings of the selected clip items.
Verify the audio output assignment of each track by Control-clicking the Lock Track control or Auto Select control of each track and checking the audio output assignment in the Audio Outputs submenu of the shortcut menu. For more information, see Assigning Tracks in the Timeline to Audio Outputs.
Connect your 5.1-channel surround sound speaker system to the appropriate channels of your audio interface.
How Audio Outputs Are Assigned Automatically
Final Cut Pro automatically configures audio output busses according to the selected linked clip items in your sequence. This feature is often used with 5.1-channel surround sound clips, but keep in mind that Final Cut Pro supports only the following 5.1-channel surround sound format:
Tracks 1 and 2: Left and right
    Track 3: Center
    Track 4: Low-frequency effects (LFE)
Tracks 5 and 6: Left surround and right surround
Based on the clip items above, the Match Audio Outputs command would create the following audio output bus groups: stereo 1 and 2 (left and right), mono 3 (center), mono 4 (LFE), and stereo 5 and 6 (left surround and right surround). Here is how the sequence tracks would be assigned to the audio outputs:
Tracks 1 and 2 (left and right): Stereo output 1 and 2
Track 3 (center): Mono output 3
Track 4 (LFE): Mono output 4
Tracks 5 and 6 (left surround and right surround): Stereo output 5 and 6
Assigning More Audio Outputs Than Your Hardware Supports
You can assign more outputs than your current audio hardware supports, allowing you to open sequences with multichannel output settings on computers that don’t have professional audio interfaces connected.
If you select an audio output that exceeds the number of output channels of your audio interface, Final Cut Pro warns you that you will not hear tracks assigned to unavailable outputs. However, you are still allowed to use this preset. You may want to choose or create such a preset when:
You want to keep your project compatible with another editing system that does support all of the audio channels in the preset. For example, you might normally work on a system with eight audio output channels but need to edit part of your project on a portable computer that only has a built-in stereo output.
You want to export multiple individual AIFF files for use in another application. For example, you can export up to 24 individual audio files from your sequence by choosing an audio output preset with 24 output channels.
    Monitoring 5.1-Channel Surround Sound
Final Cut Pro does not support multichannel surround sound mixing capabilities or editing of speaker assignments, but you can configure your system to monitor certain kinds of 5.1-channel surround sound audio files. If you have 5.1-channel surround sound files that have been mixed in another audio application such as Soundtrack Pro, you can import these files and then configure your audio outputs and hardware to monitor in surround sound.
Important: A multichannel audio interface and speaker system with at least six channels is required to monitor surround sound.
There are two ways of configuring your sequence audio outputs for 5.1-channel surround sound monitoring:
Use the 5.1 Monitoring audio preset: If you know in advance that you are going to edit a 5.1-channel surround sound file into your sequence, you can assign the 5.1 Monitoring audio preset to your sequence.
Use the Match Audio Outputs command: This command automatically configures your sequence audio outputs and track output assignments based on the currently selected audio clip in your sequence. You can select a 5.1-channel surround sound clip in your sequence and use the Match Audio Outputs command to automatically configure your sequence outputs.

  • Can't import AVCHD in to FCP X...

    Hi,
I have FCP X 10.1.1 and I have on my disk backuped AVCHD movies. It's a complete copy of a disk on which they was recorded (complete PRIVATE folder with everything). QT see it and I can play it there, but when I'm trying to import it to the FCP X, I have it grayed ...
I try everything but no change. I can't use import from archve, while is greyed too.
Has anybody any help what can I do to import it to FCP X directly without any transcode or rewraping it?
    Thanks.

You may well be doing something wrong, but unless you give a detailed explanation of exactly what you are trying to import and how, we cannot tell.
Just in case it's a problem with FCP X try these general troubleshooting tips:-
Use this free app to trash the preferences. This should be the first thing you try when any problems occur.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
    2. Open Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
    3. Trash FCP X using this free app and reinstall it.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/fcsremover/
If these 3 measures don't work, create a new User Account (Admin) in System Preferences and try running FCP X from that as it sometimes works miracles.

  • Cannot import video files into FCP

Every time I try to import a file (.mov , .mpg , .m4v) FCP gives me an error message reading "File Error: File Unknown" If I try and import through the drop down menu, the error reads "File Error: 1 file(s) Recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
The only file that seems to work is a .avi
This started happening when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Please Help

    Here's a couple solutions ...
I had this problem this week as well. Suddenly I couldn't import any type of media into FCP. After trying a few things like reinstalling FCS 2 and talking to other people, I called up Apple Support. They walked me through a few more efforts to solve the issue or at least get an idea of what causes the problem.
What we discovered is that when I created a new user profile for my iMac and logged into that profile, everything in Final Cut worked fine. I could import media with no problem. THUS, the issue seems to be connected to my computer profile. So I was presented with two options:
Option 1: Create a new user profile and either migrate all my content over to it or simply edit from that profile.
Option 2: The Nuclear Option. Back up all your content you don't want to loose, pop in your OS X disk, restart the computer holding C, and select the option to erase your hard drive and install OS X from scratch.
I figured that after two years of a **** of a lot of editing and other work on this computer, it was time to just go for the Nuclear option and obliterate everything off of it and start fresh. Takes a while to do, but I've just confirmed that I'm able to import media again in FCP.
So, sadly it's not a real simple option like deleting your preference files, like other FCP issues, but there is way to clear up this issue. The important thing to note here is that reinstalling FCP didn't work for me, and doing an Archive Install of OS X which still keeps my user profile essentially intact also keep the problem intact and solves nothing.
Now, if you have to get a project your editing out the door right away, just create a new profile and get busy editing. But once that project is done, or if you have the time right now, I think the best option is the Nuclear Option. Back your stuff up and then clear your hard drive out and start anew.
I hope that helps guys. I know how crazy I was going not finding anything on a forum to help me out.

  • Importing movie clips to FCP 5

I'm trying to import a movie onto FCP 5 w/o filming it as it plays then capturing it onto my Mac. I tried an unprotected burned dvd using dvd shrink and I also tried some avi format files. When I tried a burned dvd I could import just the video with VOB format but no audio and when I tried importing an avi file some got audio but some didnt. I tried to render avi files w/ audio but it would let me render. Is there a way to import a movie or and avi format on FCP w/o filming?

I am not clear on what you are asking. Are you asking how to import footage from a DVD? Then Google "MPEG Streamclip" and use that to convert the VOB into a DV file that you can edit.
AVIs? From where? Where are you obtaining the footage you are trying to edit with FCP? FCP is designed to work with .MOVs, but can work with AVIs, if the codec they are encoded as is supported by FCP.

I imported digital photos from my Olympus into Iphoto without trouble, but when I try to send as an attachment thru email, the items cannot be opened as photos .
How exactly are you trying to send them?
Do you select the photos in iPhoto and use the "Share > Email" feature? With iPhoto or Mail as set as Mail client?
Or do you access the iPhoto Library from Mail via the Media Browser?

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP X

I'm relatively new to FCP so this could be a really easy fix. I took a bunch of short video clips (20s --> 1.5 min) on my Panasonic ZS25 and imported the clips to my MacBook Pro (2008 with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor). [I have version 10.8.4 of OSX]. The clips from my camera were in .mts format so I used the Smart Convertor Pro App from the App Store to convert all 80 files to a .mov format. Both the converted clips and FCP X are stored on my 700 GB external, and while I tried to import the clips into FCP X, the program almost immediately froze and shut down. Thinking I "overloaded" (for lack of a better word) FCP X, I decided to try and delete the blank clips that were showing up in the program. However each time I attempted to click on a clip the program crashed again. I eventually was able to delete all the clips, and decided to move the converted clips from my external to my desktop. Once they were moved I then tried to import just one clip from the desktop to FCP X (which is still run through my external). Although it was successfully imported, once I clicked on the file to play it in FCP X the program crashed again.
What can possibly be the problem and what can I do to fix it?
Note: This is my first time using both my new camera (and having to deal with this .mts BS) as well as FCP X.

Thanks Russ, Tom, and Hughmass for all your input. It really is appreciated. Unfortunatly even after moving FCPX to my desktop and converting the .mov files in MPEGstreamclip, importing the movie clips into the program still causes random shut downs. Perhaps the clips are corrupted or something? I honestly don't know, and I'd rather kind of just ignore this problem then keep hashing away seeing as the clips aren't that important (and yes, being super smart, i deleted them off the camera well before hand).
Just to make sure FCPX works, I took some short clips on my Panasonic DMCZS25, and imported them successfully into FCPX and was able to edit together a quick piece. Thanks again for all your help!

  • Importing Motion Files to FCP

I've searched for this problem and have yet to find a thread with a conclusion - please point me in the right direction if I've missed it.
I'm running Motion 3.0.2 and FC Pro 6.0.6 along with OS 10.4.11. I'm due to upgrade all these asap - but as I'm in the middle of a long project I'm holding back. I've never been able to import Motion files into FCP either by using Import or dragging into the browser - I get a "File Error: Unknown File" message. Instead I make a QT file and work on that. Usually I don't have many files in a sequence so that's never really ben a problem.
However, I've now putting together some much longer sequences and it's a pain when shots need tweaking to have to re-make QTs each time.
I've trashed both Motion and FCP preferences without luck. I have Snow Leopard sitting waiting to be installed. Could that fix the problem? Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    hi,
seem to remember someone else having this problem, have you repair permissions etc on your system. Can you double click a motion file for it to open from the Finder. Does the Finder know they are Motion files and should be opened by Motion? er can't think of anything else
