Impossible problem

Hi,
 I am having the strangest problem in the world with connecting to the internet. Maybe one of you guys can help. Well, first off I have 2 computers connected to my Linksys WRT54GS router wirelessly (Toshiba Laptop and Apple iMac G3). Friday the internet just stopped working so I unplugged the router and tried connecting both computers directly to the cable modem via ethernet but still the internet did not work so I reconnected them and called Earthlink. Then they scheduled an appointment and came over and connected there computer to both the router and modem. It did not work on the router but did work on the modem. They even replaced the modem and tried but none of my computers worked still. My computers do work on other wireless networks however but I have no way of testing it on another ethernet network. The IP address registers fine when connected to the modem directly but there is no connection still and the router will let me access the control panel but no internet. Right now the only way for me to connect to the internet is use a neighbors WIFI connection or connect my computer to the modem with a USB cord instead of an ethernet cord and that dont work on the Mac. I also tried connecting my Xbox 360 to the modem but it dont work either. Tomorrow I'm getting a new router (definetely not a Linksys as this is my third Linksys and I cant stand these routers) but I dont know if that will help either.

I don't think that the router is a problem in your case ... as the computers do not go online when connected to the modem , they won't go online through the router as well ..

  • Impossible problem with iPod Photo

    Ok, so here's the kick:
    I joined this forum because I cannot find a solution to this problem whatsoever. I have an iPod Photo that has been sitting in a drawer for about 2 years. I just got a new car stereo and I wanted to fix my old iPod instead of buying a new one. Besides, all I want is the music playback. The original problem with the iPod was the hard drive. It made the usual "clicking" noise everyone has heard at least once, so my first goal was to change the hard drive. I ordered a 30GB Toshiba Drive that fits exactly for my iPod. Actually, it upgraded it's old 20GB one without occupying any additional space. While I was at it, I also ordered a new battery, since I was pretty sure 2 years ago the battery already had problems, and it couldn't have gone better with the years.
    So, first package arrives: Hard Drive.
    I replaced the hard drive and connected the iPod to my computer. Yay! No more noises! But, for some reason, the iPod cannot connect to my computer. Here's what happens:
    I connect the iPod
    iPod turns on
    Apple Logo appears
    Exclamation Folder or Sad iPod icon appears (normal, since I just changed the hard drive and there are no iPod Software files)
    After a few mins, the "Do not disconnect" message appears, and my computer starts to connect with the iPod
    Not even 30 seconds later, the iPod completly restarts. The screens flashes off like it ran out of battery.
    So, I though, maybe it was the battery. So, 2nd package arrives: Battery.
    I changed the battery and I'm still having the same problem. Here are some steps I've taken:
    1. Put iPod in Disk Mode and connect: Computer doesn't recognizes it, iPod restarts after 45 secs approx
    2. Charge iPod: iPod wont charge in any outlet. It will just try to start and, since it will fail due to the lack of software, it will just turn off. I tried putting the iPod in Disk Mode and then charging it, and it did work. I left it charging for about 30 mins and retried connecting it, and I had the same problem/results
    3. Put old Hard Drive back: just for the heck of it
    I sincerely have NO IDEA of what to do, and I haven't been able to find any help on Google nor any other forum.
    Does someone, ANYONE, has a suggestion?

    I, too, have this exact same problem after trying to use my daughter's IPod Photo 30GB that she abandoned about 2yrs ago. I've replaced the battery but this does not make any difference. I managed to get it into Disk Mode but when I try to restore it on the pc, it cannot see it. I also tried someone's suggestion of using a Mac but it made no difference.
    Someone also suggested rebooting the hard drive using the reset button inside. However, have opened the IPod up and can't see a reset button anywhere on the hard drive. Have seen photos of hard drives in other IPods and it is really easy to find!
    All I want to do is restore the IPod, there must be someone out there who can help. PLEASE?!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Seemingly Impossible Problems with iTunes

    I've never had any problems with iTunes until a few months ago, and I've been unable to use the program since. It all started when I upgraded to iTunes 10, and my computer randomly started to freeze every time I tried to open the program. I thought that I would try to uninstall and reinstall iTunes, but it definitely hasn't worked out the way I'd planned.
    The iTunes 10 installations would cause my computer to freeze, so I thought I would try to go back to iTunes 9, which I had no problems with previously. I followed the uninstall instructions on the Apple Support website, started to install iTunes 9, and my computer freezes every time when "registering iTunes automation server". I can't even get the Task Manager to come up when this happens, so I'm forced to turn my computer off and start over. I tried this again, still no luck. I uninstalled everything, turned off my spyware programs, deleted my temp files... everything. I even deleted the program files today, and I still haven't had any luck.
    I have a small fortune invested in iTunes, and I'd really like to get it back up and running before Christmas. I have some new CDs I'd love to put on my iPod, and one of my favorite bands is releasing a limited edition digital box set that you can only get on iTunes that I'd really like to have. I've read that Apple doesn't even know how to fix this problem, and I don't really want to spend $29 for a pointless phone call.
    Any help would be highly appreciated, thank you in advance!

    I've tried uninstalling all of the Apple programs on my computer, but the installation still freezes at the same spot.

  • Div Layer on top of Div Layer impossible problem

    Hello guys,
    For over 42 hours I've been puzzling myself with this problem.
    Using Dreamweaver cs5.5, i have a text box with overflow:auto, because there's alot of text. On top of this layer I have another div layer with a pic that fades when the page loads.  My problem is the scrollbar is beneath the layer for the pic that fades, so when you try to scroll down the page you cannot because the pic layer blocks it.  In Internet Explorer it works perfectly fine, but not in any other browser.
    Anyone know any way around this uberly frustrating problem?

  • Impossible problem after latest update of 10.5 and 10.6

    Hi all,
    I've an incredible problem that I'm not able to solve...:
    after latest update of 10.5 (some days before SL) I noticed that mouse movement was very strange and every 10 seconds (about) the mouse acceleration speeds up and after 1 seconds turn normal. The problem repeat in infinite cycle. With 10.6 and 10.6.1 is the same.
    I made also this test: I boot with Leopard DVD and tested the mouse movement on the install screen. The movement is ok but if I boot with Snow Leopard DVD the mouse movement on the install screen is wrong.
    Then... this is not a problem of a software on my hard disk (my first suspect) but some difference on the driver of the mouse that on my iMac has this problem.
    Someone can help me?

  • My review of DL2100 ( compared with EX2)

    Hey,I had an EX2 device before and here is my review after 5 months of usage . Now i have replaced them with DL2100 and i want to compare the 2 of them with real life usage, not marketing. With red, you will see the review for DL2100  
    So what i like about EX2:
    - fast read/write ( this is only because i don't have another NAS to compare)   - quite fast read/write, about 15-20 MB more than EX2 ( not using link aggregation)
    - small and elegant design   - bigger and chunkier. I like EX2's design more, but this is the trend now on NAS devices, so it's ok
    - quiet   - except the first seconds when the device is booting, the fan is quite.
    - apearently easy to use   - apearently easy to use- intuitive explanations in the GUI   - intuitive explanations in the GUI is keept and i like this
    - cheaper than other competitor ( now i know why )   - not very cheap at 650+ euros. I guess they charge the extra money for hardware( better CPU, more RAM and upgradeable, dual network and dual power supply. Not a very improved OS to justify the cost)- quality HDDs
       - quality HDDs   - added power button. This small and common thing is needed.   - public folders can finally be turned off and deleted. Seems that they finally understand and implemented one of customers biggest request.   - finally the fan is working and the fan's rotations are counted   - RAM is upgradable
    So what i don't like about EX2:- no power button. Even if WOL is available and something so simple as a power button may seem unnecessary, trust me it's needed.
    - public folders can't be made private ( on ex2100 it can, but firmware update for EX2 is 6 months old)
    - power scheduler is not customizable enough   - power scheduler is still the same and very primitive.
    - smartphone apps are not reliable, maybe because of the ex2 's firmware. Sometimes it connects and the next time it sais that you don't have access or permissions and you have to add the device again. Not reliable when you are away.   - smartphone app seems to be more stable on DL2100. Still not perfect, but until now i had only 2 problems when the app could not connect to NAS. Again, the fix was to generate another access code, delete the device and add it again. Still needs work!
    - support is very limited  - I still found problems in the first 1hour of usage, and nothing to be done without a firmware update.
    - firmware is not customizable enough ( have you see Synology or Asustor ? ..if not, take a good look you have enough to lean WD !! )  - same thing as EX2, beside some extra features like public folder deletion, 2xNICs connectivity options, everything is the same as EX2
    - updates for EX2 stopped and no one from WD want to make an official statement about what's going on.  - DL2100 is not better at this chapter. Still no updates since the device release ( 1.06.133 realeased a few days ago is only for a security update, not performace and usability improvement )
    - backup works whenever it wants  - no problems so far, but i only use remote backup and most of the backup problems were related to attached stick/drive- unable to backup on a shared location except on another WD device   - same problem/ 'feature'
    - app market from ages ago with no active updating   - same app market- for every new shared folder created, you have to create a separate backup job, because editing existing ones is impossible    - problem persists. No possibility to edit a job once it's created- no possibility to turn OFF .wdmc hidden folders where not needed. If you have to copy all the picture folders on another location, you will end up copying those hidden .wdmc folders aswell. If you have a few hundrets of picture folders, good luck clean that up.    - so far, i couldn't see any .wdmc hidden folders. I'm sure they are somewhere, but even with show hidden folders  option activated on Windows, i couldn't se them. Copy of the folder on another WIN machine doesn't seem to have other files beside what I added to that folder. I haven't tried SSH- When accessing EX2's dashboard over internet or VPN, My cloud Services shows as turned OFF and can't be turned on, but when i access the dashboard within the internal network, Cloud Services shows as ON. Also you can't use tools that require Cloud Services to be turned ON, ex statistics of disk usage.    - same problem.- Dashboard can't be accessed over VPN or any other subnet. The only workaround is to turn Cloud Access ON, even if you do not do the port forwarding on the router to actually have Cloud Access over the internet   - same problem- FTP still has problems   - I couldn't make FTP work the way i wanted, only wih the same setting from EX2, which i've talked about on this forum.- If you have a normal backup job and you create a Sync backup job, it will not sync the existing backup, but it will create another folder and double your files on the backup target nas. Not to mantion that day 28 is the beste WD could do. What if i want to do a sync on day 30 or 31.   - same problem- WOL is not a feature if the target is shutdown while attempting to run a backup job   - same problem- no possibility to hide folders from users that do not have access   - same problem- no idea is the fan is actually working or when it should be activated. Fan RPM is always 0   - TURN OFF LED option is not available anymore. I was using that and i don't like the bright light during the night.   - No possibility to see how much space is free/used on every disk when JBOD. Only if you map the shares or calculate how much every share is using. Not practical !   - Problems with the email notification system. A shutdown/reboot (which is critical to know) of the device is considered an information instead of atleast a warning if not critical. Therefore, notification email not sent. Also a successfull backup is considered a warning, instead of an information. I haven't tested all the event's but since these are quite important i notified WD support.

  • All contacts not syncing with curve 8900 and desktop 7

    I've been trying this for a year and I've had no success. This 8900 is my 4th Blackberry. While I've done backups with the others this is the first time I've tried to sync the info. When I first synced I thought everything was OK, but then I noticed a lot of the contacts didnt sync. A lot of iportant ones. I've tried everything and hit a wall. I've gone thru all the 395 contacts, deleted a bunch, fixed a bunch and made everything ready. I've talked to Microsoft, AT&T and the BB folks and still nothing. When I synced it to my PC, 179 of 395 synced and the Outlook folder size is 297kb. I just synced to my laptop and only 124 synced and the folder size is 120kb. I checked the options on the 8900 contact list and it shows my gmail address as the name of my Contact list. I've NEVER loaded my gmail info on this or any other BB. I checked my gmail and there are NO contacts listed. Never have been. I followed the instructions, went to Default Services and there is no Contacts option, only Calendar and Messaging which have my primary email ([email protected]) as the services. I have loaded info for the Netzero email, Roadrunner email and Blackberry email. Did load the Yahoo account name but never connected it. Just checked the service books and there is no gmail info. There'sno option to rename the contact list and I can't see if there are any subfolders under it. I HAVE TO GET ALL THIS INFO TO A PLACE WHERE I CAN ACCESS IT TO TRANSFER TO A NEW NON-BLACKBERRY PHONE. I've literally spent hours researching, talking on the phone and it is still not working. I lost 3 days on it this we3ek that I was supposed to be on the other coast of Florida visiting a High School beauty thats down for a week, a cousin that's fighting cancer and  a musician friend. I worked on the highest problem parts of the Space Shuttle Boosters and worked thru some seemingly impossible problems. As a result I had a mental breakdown and now have to depend on othersm whicdh I never did before. Seems like everybody that could help or might have info isn't sharing. I CAN'T BE THE FIRST PERSON THAT'S HAD THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE HELP ME!!!

  • Back To My Mac - Dot Mac Family Pack

    Anyone know if Back To My Mac will work with two computers using different accounts with a dot mac "family pack"? BTMM works fine with two different family pack accounts while on the home network, but I can't seem to make them talk over the Internet (using Airport Extreme routers at both locations with UPNP turned on)...

    It just so happens that all the impossible problems happen to me.

    I found out, that the problem what we have is our Public Folder Structure in the company. We have more as 40'000 public folders in this structure.
    Now i find out that when i start my Outlook in a offline modus i can selct my special folder after i press the "Select Folder" button.
    When i try the same thing in online modus the PC-Suite hangs...
    The only combinations that i see is the Public Folder.
    I try a test in the evening: I push the button "Select Folder" and have run my PC over the Night. On the next morning the Window was appear.
    Also was is my problem the Public Folder Structure that the PC-Suite scans after i push the button "select Folder"

  • Firefox opens a GEDCOM file instead of invoking the proper software

    When Firefox encounters hyperlinks in webpages to files which are NOT html sometimes it will ask for a chooser application, but sometimes not. In the case of a GEDCOM file it simply opens a tab with all the text in it. I want Firefox to ask me to identify the relevant software (as with a spreadsheet, for example)

    Yes, cor-el, I am sure you are right - and this needs fixing.
    In my case it was not a matter of a server sending a file - both of these files were resident on my computer - I was in effect working off-line.
    Microsoft Internet Explorer does not suffer from this problem (but Google Chrome and Opera do have it) so it is not an impossible problem to fix simply to have Firefox recognise the .GED extender?
    At the moment I am in the position where I will have to recommend to anyone using the pages to use IE........ Not what I would have preferred to do!!!

  • Airport Express: Internet Access Works But Not "Seen" in Admin. Util. ??

    Hi All --
    I have a friend with the set-up described below and a seemingly impossible problem. he's asked for my help, and so I'm asking for yours, because frankly the situation just has me stumped. Here goes:
    Set-Up & Other Relevant Facts
    • DSL connection comes out of the phone jack and goes to a Westell model 6100 modem.
    • From there, a short Ethernet cable goes to a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Switch.
    • Two Ethernet cables exit the Linksys Switch: one goes to a PC, and one goes to an Airport Express (AX).
    • From the AX, a USB cable goes to a printer (a Brother 1440 laser printer).
    • The AX is only about 10 feet from his PowerBook G4 15-inch and he gets a full (four-bar) signal on Airport menulet at the top of the screen.
    • When he first set-up his system, the G4 and the Airport did set up the Brother printer (using the Airport Setup Assistant), and the Brother is listed as a printer on the G4's printer window or such.
    • Both the G4 and the PC access the web fine via this setup (the G4 wirelessly). In System Preferences > Network, the Airport Network is listed, and it says "Airport is connected to the network Apple Network 6c6c1. You are connected to the Internet via Airport."
    Problems
    • When the Airport Admin Utility is opened, no Airport Express appears at all, even when "rescan" is repeatedly clicked.
    How can this be? How can the PowerBook be connecting wirelessly to the Web through the Airport Express, but the Airport Express no be "seen" by the Airport Admin utility?
    • In addition, although web surfing is possible for both PowerBook and PC, neither computer is able to successfully print to the Brother 1440. When he tried printing from the PC, he got the following error messages:

    Result=(02)The printer on this port is not responding.
    Status Line=BUSY:H,ACK:H,PE:H,SLCT:H,FALT:H,SLIN:L,HBSY:H,INIT:H,STB:H
    Later, it seemed that printing from either computer would start and then stall, flashing a variety of different signals about spooling or "printer busy" and the like, all of which appeared to indicate things just weren't working right..
    Anyway, the initial questions we're dealing with are the ones in bold above. The printer issues are probably are related and they can be addressed secondarily.

    That is odd and doesn't happen on my wireless network!
    Nor have I read in any post that an extra

    All routers have at least two IP's - an external and an internal. When the router acts as an internal DHCP server it hands out many more IP's. Your Express gets one external IP and the default internal one is set to 10.0.1.1 and the first IP handed out is 10.0.1.2, etc.
    However I have seen different subnets- from dncp
    server.
    Are you talking about the external IP's that your ISP is randomly assigning without your control? Are you talking about the different ways you can configure the internal DHCP numbers? If not there's something else going on. Everything on Douglas internal network should have an IP from the Express DHCP server vs. JDee's internal IP's should all be assigned by the modem/router DHCP server. Once you have everything on the same network numbers AirTunes, printers, and Airport Admin Utility lists just work!

    What IP number does your computer have and what number does the Express have? If it's a router it has two IP's!

    I'm working with JDeveloper3, JDK1.2.2 under Windows NT Workstation. When I try to invoke a method of a service registered at the rmiregistry, either the rmiregistry process throws an IllegalThreadStateException or the Client throws:
    java.rmi.ServerError: Error occurred in server thread; nested exception is:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: RmiServer
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: RmiServer
    void RmiServerImpl_Stub.invokeService()
    void RmiClient.main(java.lang.String[])
    The same program works with the Sun JDK1.2.2.
    Did anyone encounter the same problem?

    no i not had solution, this just passed out. i'm not believing in this tecnologies of oracle, there is a lot of people without solutions, hard or impossible problems like the my :P
    somebody like to work with it or have some good reason to use this tecnologies? (OC4J and JDeveloper)

  • I have organizer 8 to input name tags.  The whole process of inputting tags has stopped working.

    I have exhausted all remedies I know of, including restoring windows.  I have windows7, a 64 bit, I7 computer.  I have read some of the support comments as well as forum comments.  It is obvious that I had better not ever try reinstalling any Adobe program, but especially Elements because of the serial number problems.  So, now Adobe has made it virtually impossible for users.  Programs don't work, can't uninstall/reinstall without major problems and time by the buyer/user; Adobe makes it extraordinarily hard to think they are a good company.
    So what does the forum recommend to users for solving seemingly impossible problems without spending more money and a huge amount of time?

    You may have an ISP that automatically redirects you to a search page if a DNS look up fails.
    That takes the control from Firefox to do the normal keyword search like a Google I'm Lucky search.
    In such cases you need to contact your ISP and ask for a DNS server to opt-out of that feature.
    You can also check if there is a link on the search results page to go to your ISP and opt-out.

  • PB Surfs Web Wirelessly, But Admin Util Can't "see" Airport Express - Huh?

    Hi All --
    I have a friend (no really a friend, not me, I swear ;-)) with the set-up described below and a seemingly impossible problem. He's asked for my help, and so I'm asking for yours, because frankly the situation just has me stumped. Here goes:
    Set-Up & Other Relevant Facts
    • DSL connection comes out of the phone jack and goes to a Westell model 6100 modem.
    • From there, a short Ethernet cable goes to a Linksys 5-Port Workgroup Switch.
    • Two Ethernet cables exit the Linksys Switch: one goes to a PC, and one goes to an Airport Express (AX).
    • From the AX, a USB cable goes to a printer (a Brother 1440 laser printer).
    • The AX is only about 10 feet from his PowerBook G4 15-inch and he gets a full (four-bar) signal on Airport menulet at the top of the screen.
    • When he first set-up his system, the G4 and the Airport did set up the Brother printer (using the Airport Setup Assistant), and the Brother is listed as a printer on the G4's printer window or such.
    • Both the G4 and the PC access the web fine via this setup (the G4 wirelessly). In System Preferences > Network, the Airport Network is listed, and it says "Airport is connected to the network Apple Network 6c6c1. You are connected to the Internet via Airport."
    Problems
    • When the Airport Admin Utility is opened, no Airport Express appears at all, even when "rescan" is repeatedly clicked.
    How can this be? How can the PowerBook be connecting wirelessly to the Web through the Airport Express, but the Airport Express no be "seen" by the Airport Admin utility?
    • In addition, although web surfing is possible for both PowerBook and PC, neither computer is able to successfully print to the Brother 1440. When he tried printing from the PC, he got the following error messages:
    [Status for LPT1]
    Result=(02)The printer on this port is not responding.
    Status Line=BUSY:H,ACK:H,PE:H,SLCT:H,FALT:H,SLIN:L,HBSY:H,INIT:H,STB:H
    Later, it seemed that printing from either computer would start and then stall, flashing a variety of different signals about spooling or "printer busy" and the like, all of which appeared to indicate things just weren't working right..
    Anyway, the initial questions we're dealing with are the ones in bold above. The printer issues are probably are related and they can be addressed secondarily.
    Any and all help with this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone.

    Please excuse this duplicate post, but I posted this this morning in the AIrport Express forum at about 8 a.m. and have thus far received no replies at all. In fact, it's only been viewed a total of nine times -- and half of those are me. Very sad, and my friend is growing fairly desperate and is now convinced that only a complete reset and fresh start will fix his problem......

    Well, it's the old 'friend of mine' gag, eh. Seriously though, it seems there have been numerous post over in the Aiport forums regarding this issue. I guess the first thing your friend can try is following these instructions to reset the AE. One of the other things discussed was the firmware version for AE. Some users have reported that version 6.1.1 works better than 6.2. One user reported being able to use the other button in AE admin utility, then entering the assigned IP address and password to gain access. One user resolved his issue by enabling the setting Distrubute IP addresses in the AE. It should be noted he also reset up his network at that point as well. Now as far as the printer goes, below are some instructions from iFelix for the Windows side which may be of some help.

    For the Mac side apparently there are issues with that model printer. Here's a link of compatible printers that iFelix put together. You'll see the notation next to the Brother 1440. Hope that helps a little. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance.
