Improve Flash perormance by increasing Cache, page file with SSD or USB3?

The way I use flash demands a lot of memory.
I have a huge number of vector shape on stage and keep making changes to them and it gets flash to stutter and delay a lot. (I did try using illustrator and CorelDraw for that purpose but they simply don`t answer my needs in that regard aas flash does)
Of course my 64 bit 18 GB ram is to no avail in this case.
I noticed that increasing Cache and page file does help.
I`m on windows 7 and currently have cache initially at 5 GB and max: 30 Gb and distributed between various drives.
I would like to allocate more harddisk space for cahce. My questions are :
1.Is there a limit in size beyond which Cahce will simply not be used by flash?
2.What would be more efficient, a 200GB SSD or a  2 TB USB 3?
Thanks

3.2 GB Ram , it being a 32bit application
That's a ton of RAM. RAM management is also a part of application coding. Your library may contain a ton of items but the only items in RAM are the items necessary for your current context. Cache will ensue only if there's free memory. Your file size is so small I'm only left to believe you have an excessively complex timeline with a huge number of instances alive at once, or your CPU and RAM are old. Otherwise, you should get great performance. What are your specs?
Most of what I'm getting at with vectors versus bitmaps is vectors require processing, bitmaps don't. Bitmaps are a block of memory and operate at RAM speed. The bogging you might experience is most likely the CPU and RAM strain from processing simply too many (possibly complex) vectors all at once, but a quick look at your performance monitor would tell you that.
When vectors shape are involved, RAM usage has nothing to do with file size
If you have a 1.2MB vector, it's going to take quite a bit of CPU and RAM strain to process it. If it's a 30kb vector, far, far less processing. Although 500 instances of that 30kb vector will. So file size and instance count do directly correlate to the processing performance.
I`m running SSD as C
Great, I do as well. There's no speed increase to page to a different drive when your FLA is 3~4MB. You have the rest of the drives space to page to. Unless you simply don't have enough space left after OS+apps to feel comfortable with a 5GB page. Perhaps you should let the OS manage the pagefile. Setting a final size used to be a performance trick but the OS will give you a good idea how much you're actually paging. That would answer your question on if you even need a whole drive dedicated to it.
I'd get a second SSD just to have for a multitude of other reasons. And definitely a RAID1 mirror on the OS drive . Be careful with SSD RAIDs, they're still not in what the IT industry would consider trustable territory. I have 2 SSDs in RAID0 on my home gaming rig but that's because all my important files are on other drives, and I have a mirror image of the OS if something fails.

  • Mavericks won't accept 'change all' command to open ALL pages files with v 4.3 app

    Hello again,
I upgraded my MacBook Air mid June 2013 build to Mavericks at my Apple store. The download was fast, under 30 min., and the installation went well, also fast at about 40 minutes. All apps are working fine. I spent much time before taking the plunge to learn the pros and cons of this upgrade, and the biggest issue for me was the ability to keep using the older versions of Pages and Numbers.  The new, watered down versions cannot do what I need. I followed the instructions to select a Pages file in Finder, open the Info pane, and under 'Open with' selected the old version. Then, to apply this to ALL the files, I selected 'Change all...' and 'Continue'. But, it still lists the new version as default. So far, the only fix is to go through ALL my files and manually choose the old version for each. Very laborious. Am I missing something? It seems Mavericks will not accept to change them all for some reason.
    Thank you, Cinilla

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • I can't open a Pages file with Pages?

I use the newest version of Pages which came along with iWork '09, and I recently saved a document with Pages. It was unfinished, and I decided to come back later and finish the work. However, when I tried to open the file again, there was an error message saying Pages could not open the document. I checked the Info of the document, and sure enough, it was a Pages Publication. Is there any solution to this problem or do I have to type my document all over again?
    Thanks

Sometimes, Pages make errors when it save documents.
I got several kinds of such wrongly saved ones :
files with no index.xml file embedded
    files with wrongly formed index.xml
    files with wrongly packed index.xml
files wrongly packed (when using the flatfile format introduced by iWork'09)
files truncated for some unknown reason.
You may send your file to my mailbox so that I may try to revive its contents.

  • After you increase the page size with Ctrl/plus, is there a way to keep the new setting?

''Duplicate post, continue here - [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/845611]''
My new laptop has great features but a smaller screen. Changing the resolution makes everything look awful. Using Ctrl/plus to increase the page size in Firefox solves the problem, but you lose the new setting when you go to a different page. Is there a way to keep the new setting until you reverse it with Ctrl/minus ?

There are some add-ons that can be used to change the zoom level on all sites, for example:

  • Problem caching EPS files with multiple forms

I'm attempting to use multiple forms for caching 1 or more EPS Files in a postscript document. I've followed Technical Note #5144 to the letter and use the "array of strings" method since I have to support Postscript level 2 printers. The arrays appear to be loaded with strings representing the EPS as expected.
If I use only a single form with 1 EPS it works great. I can execute the form anywhere on the page as many times as I want. If I add a 2nd form to the page it causes strange behavior. The 2nd form is drawn regardless of if I execute it or not. Even if I comment out ALL execform calls it still shows the 2nd form (the page should be blank).
I've boiled down the code to a faily simple example. I took out all the binary EPSF content for each form and instead have each form draw a circle.
If working write this postscript should be drawing a smiley face using 4 circles.
    Should look something like this:
    0 0
    0
<> <--- This should show like a stretched out circle.
However, the mouth is actually drawn very small down in the lower left hand corner of the page. If you change the order of the forms definition then the mouth is drawn correctly but not the eyes and nose.
The forms as named EPSForm-Circle and EPSForm-Circle2

Cannot open my old version for Pages's files.. How should I do? It show as this..

    May you be polite ?
Trying to be efficient, Fruhulda asked you to open a new thread.
Given your reaction, I asked the moderators to do what you refused to do.
Now your question can't interfere with the original one.
It's really annoying to have to guess what is the real problem.
Which operating system are you running ?
Which Pages version are you using ?
At first look, it seems that you try to open with Pages '08 a document created in Pages '09, but the problem may be an other one. So, if you want accurate answers, give us the required infos.

  • Can't open a Pages file with Pages

I have someone sending me a file from a new version of Pages than I have. The files won't open, is there a work around?

Downloading the trial is not sufficient.
It would be useful to apply a recent updater before running one of the three apps.
If the operating system in use is really 10.5.8, I assume that Software Update will urge to apply the updater 9.0.3.

  • How to cache json files with dispatcher?

Our project is unique in that we want to cache particular json files. Our performance will rely on it. However it seems dispatcher is only capable of caching HTML. This will be real bad news for us if it's impossible.
In our /cache configuration, we'd like to do:
    /rules
      /0000
        /glob "*.html"
        /type "allow"
      /0001
        /glob "*.docache.json"
        /type "allow"
Unfortunately, after requesting the json file through the dispatcher, the file is not cached at all, even if doing /glob "*" /type "allow"

Depends what you mean by clear out. Dispatcher does two things on activation request: invalidate and evict.
    Invalidation:
find the /invalidate section of your dispatcher.any and add :
    /0001
                /glob "*.json"
                /type "allow"
Obviously you'll need to change the numeric ID of the rule from 0001 to whatever makes sense for you.
    Eviction (deletion):
If /mypath/mypage is being activated, then only files meeting globbing pattern /mypath/mypage.* will be deleted, such as /mypath/mypage.html and /mypath/mypage.json... however, child directories WILL NOT be evicted, such as /mypath/mypage/jcr_content/parsys/mycomponent.json
Bang - buncha info for yah.

Hi - I'm collaborating on a document with someone remotely and this feature "Track Changes" is useful for our collaboration.
Its strange, but I can't zip a document that has changes yet to be approved. Is this a bug?

It may be helpful to Press Shift during startup

start up in Safe Boot mode and temporarily disable login items and non-essential kernel extension files .
Several times, R C-R wrote that this helped him to recover a correct behavior.

  • Where place cache and catalog with SSD

LR 5.2 RC, Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit.  24GB of memory on its way.
I just installed an SSD for my O/S applications and such.  For Photoshop, I know what (hopefully) should go there.
I looked in here and found some discussions about putting cache and catalog on the SSD but previews on a separate HD.
Other than eventually wearing out the SSD, is there any reason NOT to put my heavily used catalogs and previews on the SSD with the LR cache?  I can keep the stuff I rarely have to mess with on a separate HD, and of course, the images aren't moving, but it seems like previews would LIKE to be on the SSD...
Thoughts?  Issues that would make it a bad idea?

Well, y'all, it took ONE DAY for my stupid human trick to bite me..........................
Regardless of what the various optimization scenarios tell you, DO NOT get rid of your pagefile!
FIRST TIME I fired up Photoshop, with one D300 image open (these are small, 12 megapixel images), and opened another, did an increase to the canvas size and tried to do a content-aware fill, I immediately go the "OUT OF MEMORY" popup.........
The only way I could do the fill was to kill PS CC, restart it, ONLY open the image I wanted to expand, do the fill, then shut it all down again...
Shortly thereafter, I created a medium sized pagefile on a separate HD and rebooted...
<still waiting, but not quite as patiently, for the new memory to arrive>

  • Finder Extremely Slow to List Files with SSD?

Ok, I have an odd performance issue and want to see if anyone else has seen similar behavior.
Occasionally, when I click on a directory in Finder, it takes several seconds before giving the listing, which is odd as the SSD is otherwise quite fast. (I have the new MBP i7 17" with the 512GB SSD.)
Also, Word is occasionally freezing up on me when editing some large docs sourced from Windows office, some with embedded graphics, etc. - it beachballs and does not come back with time, and a couple of times has exhibited other odd behaviors including blank dialog boxes during save, blank menus, and changing the display of my document to all question marks as if in an unsupported font. I know Office 2008 is buggy, esp. when working with big docs and complex docs from the Windows versions, but two days ago, I got several of those symptoms at the same time (not entirely surprising), and when I killed Word, got an error message (which I should have written down but didn't) saying that there had been a disk error and that my document was inaccessible, and expressly suggesting that I had a bad disk.
My system log is of course full of Word errors ("Unable to lock window," "Cannot map backing data shmem," "Unable to allocate xxxxxx bytes for bitmap data" and others), but none with the text of the error message I got, and I might just chalk this off to Word for the Mac being a clunker, but the fact that directories are sometimes slower than expected combined with the error message suggesting disk failure gives me pause.
So I'll put it out there - have you ever gotten an error like this when Word for the Mac crashed? When browsing files in Finder, does it ever stop for several seconds, a noticeable delay, before displaying a directory, even with an SSD? Any ideas what might be causing this? (Do I have a bum SSD?)

I have the same problem too. It is like Finder working on building caches, the first time I click on a local folder (library or system) then it will take quite some time (may be up to 30~60 secs) to see the listings. I aware about this slowness just 1~2 months back which not sure due to any application installation or OS upgrade/patches. However, after that, if I open another Finder window and click on the same folder again, this time the listing comes out immediately (which I suppose is the normal performance for MBP).
Tried googling but most is about SMB, which is slow too, but now our problem is this slowness even happening on the local folders that stored on SSD!!!
Appreciate suggestions to solve this or at least a way to troubleshoot this. Thanks

  • Essbase 64 bit on Windows 2003 Server: Windows Virtual cache/ Paging File ?

    Hi,
the speed of our nightly calculations seems to differ from day to day between 1 and 2 hours
I am wondering, what the correct setting for the windows paging file is ?
We use Windows 2003 64 Bit Server with 16 GB RAM
We run 1 Essbase application with 80 GB pag files with 4 GB Data Cache Setting and 1 GB Indexcache Setting in EAS console - on that server is actually nothing else running in production mode (just a few essbase-test application, usually offline)
what is the recommended setting on the windows level in the windows system properties for memory usage ?
    We have:
    Memory Usage: Adjust for best performance of "Programs" ;
Virtual Memory/Paging file on C-Drive: Custom Size, initial Size: 10 GB, maximum size 16 GB
when system was handed over from Oracle, we had 4 GB virtual memory - however in essbase manual, you read that the recommended value should be 3-5 times the physicial ram -
for me, the cache-bevahiour is strange anyway: if I watch taskmanager, I see in the middle of our 1 hour calculation the memory usage of Esssvr.exe Service using 7 GB of RAM, then the 16 GB RAM are used up at some point (paging file is 9 GB )- then suddenly nearly all the RAM get's cleared and ESSSVR.exe memory consumption goes down to 0 and from 0 increasing again-
looks to me, as all the cache for essbase get's deleted in the miiddle of the calculation, because RAM used up for paging files ?
Can anybody explain or give a clear directions, what to check ?
our application operates normally (no abnormal termination, no generation of *.xcp files)
(Essbase is installed on the 500 GB D-Drive)

    Hi John,
thanks for the helpful link - the long discussion reminded me again, that pure cores and cache is not all, what makes up a good essbase application -
I will test with calcparallel 6 (in comparison to 4) on our 64bit environment - just to see if I can achieve a 10, 20 or 30% improvement...
In addition, I must admit, that 50% of our 1-2 hour calculation is calculated in serial/ not parallel... so I expect an additional 5 to 10 min improvement, not more.
    Thank you for now

  • Page file issue

    hello team,
We have a weird issue running on one of the servers(w2k8 R2 ENt) where the page file is not getting saved on the reboot..i.e we set a value for page file 0f 200GB via GUI and the registry key also shows to be same..but on reboot of the server the value gets
chnaged to random numbers i.e sometime 25Gb or 45Gb and registry keys shows the same vaule as 200GB..
Anyone who faced such issue and any fix available for it.
    Tried number of things:
Cleaned page file with option set to none..system rebooted..page file set to 200GB..on next reboot the value changes
Set it to automatic and then set the values back but on reboot the value chnages
    Clean page file at shutdown
    Sfc scan
tried setting page file via command line but to no go
saving the page file by another name pagefile1.sys/pagefile2.sys..
No options seem to be working...

What triggers the file to grow?
Page file grows as the system needs additional memory to satisfy the memory pressure load being placed on it by the software running on the system.
What triggers the file to shrink?
If the Paging file(s) have increased from the minimum as a result of memory load the system will shrink the paging file provided there is space for a sufficient number of free
pages still left after the shrinking for a sudden need of page file space.
The check to determine if the paging file can be reduced is performed when a process exits.
I’m glad to be of help to you!
