Improvements for Xen4 on latest kernel
I have installed Xen4.0.1 on Arch using this wiki article. This also means i had to use the kernel version included with the pkgbuild.
After downgrading udev to 151 (because the latest version causes some kernel panics), everything works like a charm.
A few days later, i read about Xen4 in a magazine. It stated that it should be possible to run Xen4 on kernel 2.6.36. But when i try to build the dom0 kernel on arch it fails. I googled for this problem and found something about "Jeremy's kernel". I tried to build the dom0 kernel with these sources, but it failed too. The magazine also stated that the latest kernel has some improvements for Xen, like PVUSB and PVSCSI.
The idea is to install Xen4 on a production server, so stability is criterion #1, but performance is also important. Could anyone advise me if i have to try and patch the kernel myself (code skills are ok, but almost no knowledge about linux kernels, so i can only 1. search on google, or 2. make minor syntax adjustements), or just use the old version.
Also, i'm still looking for a nice (web-based) administration for Xen. I found several, but most of them are for RedHat and the others just won't work.
Please tell me what the best option is, or maybe share something about how you have solved it in your own environment
Ok, so after removing catalyst-test and trying to install catalyst, I got the following error:

What is the latest kernel version for OL6
Hi,
After a yum update, this is what I got:
2.6.32-300.39.1.el6uek.x86_64
I am using a SSD and it seems (based on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM) that
support for ATA TRIM was added in 2.6.33.
My question is what is the latest kernel version for OL6?
Thanks,
Zhealwu wrote:

You will need to modify your ULN channel subscription or which channels are enabled from public-yum.oracle.com to install this kernel.

Virtualbox doesn't compiles "vboxdrv" module for 2.6.24 kernel
I installed Virtualbox, however I cannot launch any OS because the vboxdrv module doesn't exists for the latest kernel (I found another module for the 2.6.23 kernel); so the GUI says that I should execute this:
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
However that file doesn't exists. I already tried to uninstall virtualbox and reinstalling from pacman, but still no luck.
What should I do? Is this a bug?
Thanks in advance.I think that's where the confusion is. When I got the package from AUR it had:
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 217 2008-01-08 15:58 interfaces
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 3596 2008-01-20 11:38 PKGBUILD
-rwx------ 1 ralvez users 174 2007-12-30 04:23 vbox_build_module
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 2384 2007-12-30 07:39 vbox.install
-rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 2179 2007-12-30 07:31 vboxnet.patch
So the patch file is there (in bold text) ... and is not executable is a text file. That's why I'm asking if I have to do something with it to make the whole thing work.
Since it is just a plain text file if I try to use it as an upgrade patch it fails with error:
loading package data... error: error while reading package vboxnet.patch: Unrecognized archive format: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
error: failed to add target 'vboxnet.patch'
So, I'm stuck. I see no way to solve the problem.
R.
Edit: On re-reading your post I wonder what package from core are you referring to? I was under the impression that when we use AUR we are "fetching" files not from core but form the AUR source.
Am I wrong?

After latest kernel update Grub freaks out
Out of three machine that I have Arch running on, all have grabbed the latest kernel update, only only of them is unable to boot. Grub does not like something that it is finding here is the error that I get:
Booting 'Arch Linux'
root (hd0,5)
Filesystem type is jfs, partition type 0x83
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/c248a2d9-7fd9-48a4-ad-49-551246f36bee resume=/dev/sda5 ro vga=773
Error 2: Bad file or directory type
Press any key to continue...
I already loaded I live cd to make sure that the uuid of the partition did not change and it has not, also the vmlinuz26 and kernel image are in the /boot directory. Is this a one off problem or are other people seeing this issue, wanting to make sure this is not some kind of bug that need reported. I am going to try just using /dev/sda6 instead of the UUID just to make sure that is not the problem (one of the working machines is setup using this method, the other is going through /dev/mapper because it uses LVM)I have tried rebuilding the the kernel image and even tried reinstalling grub with no luck. After not having a usable system for several days I ended up just having to reinstall and maybe found out more about the problem. Using the net install image and a 64 bit install this time making a EXT2 boot and a root partition of JFS right after install I get a panic during boot about how the system can't find a valid filesystem on what would be root partition. Even when passing the "rootfstype=jfs" to the kernel line in grub it still errors out telling me that it is "Bailing out, your on your own. Good luck!" (pretty funny error messages if you are not ripping your hair out). After that I redid the install this time making a EXT4 root partition and everything is working.
It seems to me that this all points to a problem with JFS on 64 bit systems, my other systems are all 32 bit and usign JFS root just fine... can anyone else confirm this?

Latest kernel and broken synaptics pack, tapping won't work! (AsusEee)
Like always, I google first. I found out that the latest kernel on arch with synaptics is "broken", there is one bug. Tapping won't work. Has anyone got a patch for this or can i just wait for the next one?
(Tapping worked before i updated)2.6.28 does introduce some changes, but its not broken, it works fine with synaptics once set up properly. Search the forums here, especially for 'elantech', there are about 37 threads on this in the last two weeks.

any idea on how to fix this?
many thanks!
enricosame problem here.
I 've edited the PKGBUILD git repo with dkao's repo he fixed the build with this commit:
https://github.com/dkao/acpi_call/commi … dccd49caef
Now the module builds, but...
I think the pkgbuild in a bad shape, it isn't installing the kernel module.
I've tried a manual insmod and depmod -a with no luck.
Did something has changed with the module installation procedure using kmod? modules has to be signed or gz compressed?
EDIT:
well I've succeeded.
1) modify git repo to dkao's in git url
2) go to /tmp/yaourt-tmp-user/aur-acpi_call-git/src/acpi_call-build (before merging the package)
3) make install
4) depmod -a
5) turn_off_gpu.sh

What is the latest kernel patch for 720_ext_rel for a SAP system on ERP 6.0 EHP3(SPS2) on a SAP NETWEAVER 7.0
Hi, Isaias is right, 720 is not supported, 721 is the official replacement of 720 kernel.
1716826 - Usage of the downward compatible kernel 721 (EXT)
Where can the 721 kernel be used?
There are two use cases for the 721 (EXT) downward compatible kernel:
For all systems with NetWeaver Releases 7.00, 7.01 (7.0 Enhancement Package 1), 7.10 and 7.11 (7.1 Enhancement Package 1) that still run with a kernel 700, 701, 710 or 711 which was delivered originally. These kernel versions are out of maintenance maintenance since August 31st, 2012. You may install the kernel 721 (EXT) on these systems as an alternative to the 720 (EXT) downward compatible kernel.
For all systems running the kernel 720 (EXT) which are:
Systems originally delivered with the 720 (EXT) kernel such as:
SAP EhP2 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 ("7.02"
SAP EhP3 for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 ("7.03"
SAP NetWeaver 7.2 ("7.20"
SAP NetWeaver 7.3 ("7.30"
SAP EhP1 forNetWeaver 7.3 ("7.31"
Systems where the original kernel 700/701/710/711 was already upgraded to the 720 (EXT) version. In these systems you can upgrade the kernel from 720 (EXT) to 721 (EXT) version.
What are the benefits of the kernel 721 (EXT)?
The SAP kernel 721 (EXT) offers several enhancements as compared to the SAP kernel 720. These enhancements may be used in different application scenarios. Please refer to the note 1728283 for more details. The SAP kernel 720 will be replaced by kernel 721 as the standard kernel for NW 7.00-7.31 based SAP systems by end of Q1 2015. A new innovation kernel will be introduced at that time. -
PCI-MXI2 Linux Driver for 2.4.x+ kernels
I have the Linux PCI-MXI2 driver version 1.6.2 which was compiled for 2.2 kernels (e.g. Redhats 5-7 or so). Is there something simple to be done to make the driver (kernel module) install for more recent kernels (e.g. 2.4.x+) ????

VMware wont start after latest kernel update!
Okay when i went to reboot it went to boot into arch but wile it was loading the vmware modules it would stay stuck at loading vm communication interface socket family and would just stay there the only way i could even boot into arch was to edit my grub so i could login and at least comment out vmware i tried to reapply the vmware patch fix that was on the wiki and had no luck also tried reinstalling + reapplying patch after words and still no luck I'm hoping this is happening to someone else as well and not just me (mean i know lol) I also tried virtualbox but seems it has it's own mess of problems as well after latest kernel update.
I have tried rebuilding the the kernel image and even tried reinstalling grub with no luck. Problems with catalyst on latest kernel update [SOLVED]
Hi, after the latest kernel update, I haven't been able to install catalyst. I was using catalyst-test, which is outdated now. And with this new kernel, the driver is not working anymore, so I'm using vesa driver for now.
I'm trying to install the current catalyst package through yaourt, and I get a conflict. The conflict is with catalyst-test which I can't uninstall because of this:
checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: google-talkplugin: requires libgl
:: lib32-libgl: requires libgl
:: libreoffice: requires libgl
:: libva: requires libgl
:: mesa: requires libgl
:: mplayer: requires libgl
:: qt: requires libgl
:: wxgtk: requires libgl
:: xine-lib: requires libgl
:: xorg-xdriinfo: requires libgl
If I try to remove these packages, I get more dependencies unsatisfied...
The solution I can think of is start uninstalling every one of these packages from the unsatisfied dependencies, write them down, and reinstall them once I get the ATI driver correctly installed again.
Any other ideas on how to fix this?
System:
Linux hoth 2.6.38-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Jun 6 22:49:29 CEST 2011 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
Videocard:
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
Also, everytime I try to reinstall catalyst through yaourt, it downloads the executable from ati.com. Is there a way to avoid this and check if downloaded version is up to date instead of downloading it every time?
Thanks in advance!
UPDATE: Ok, I used pacman -Rdd catalyst-test to remove the package, now I'm trying to install catalyst...

Please have a look at my system and give me ideas how I could eventuially improve it.
regardsI agree completely with Harm. A 550W PSU of average (or middling) quality like the one that you have (which, by the way, is based on a CWT PSH or PSH-II platform) is not quite enough to power a power-hungry CPU like the i7-950 of yours, especially if a better-performing GPU such as the the GTX 560 Ti that Harm suggested is added along with two or more additional hard drives. (Your system currently has exactly two hard drives, which is the absolute minimum that you should have in an editing system unless you want performance to be slower than an old Pentium 4. However, one of those hard drives spins at only 5400 RPM - far from ideal for an editing system. You really want all of the hard drives inside that system to spin at 7200 RPM.)
Speaking of the GTX 560 Ti, you don't need the one with 448 cores since a non-overclocked (read: stock speed) i7-950 can't take full advantage of that higher-end GPU (and please note that the GTX 560 Ti 448 is actually a GTX 570 with one of its shader units disabled whereas the standard GTX 560 Ti is a different chip altogether). The standard GTX 560 Ti, with its 384 CUDA cores and a 256-bit DDR5 memory bus width, would suffice. However, if you do wish to overclock the i7-950 (to at least 3.8GHz), then the 448-core edition of the GTX 560 Ti would make more sense. (The 9500 GT that you currently have is not only old, it's slow and weak as well: It has only 32 CUDA cores, and it uses really, really crummy DDR2 RAM with only a 128-bit memory bus width. Such a card would have made the GPU-accelerated mode significantly slower than software-only mode during certain operations within CS5.x.)
By the way, I was wrong six months ago about the Dell systems sold during Fall 2011 that came with a 1.25GB version of the GTX 560 Ti: I had assumed that that card had 448 cores. Well, I did more research, and discovered that there was an OEM version of the GTX 560 Ti which did use a 320-bit DDR5 memory bus - but it had only 352 CUDA cores. It uses the same GPU as the GTX 570 and GTX 580, but with only 11 of its 16 shader units enabled, making it a GTX 570 with four of that GPU's shader units disabled. The Dell version of the GTX 560 Ti is, indeed, only a 352-core unit that was based off of a GTX 570. That made the Dell GTX 560 Ti expensive for what it is - at around $300, it cost as much money as the 448-core version of the GTX 560 Ti sold for around that time. -
Process Improvement for Shopping Cart
I would like to have the availability to contact customer service regarding a recommended process improvement for Verizon customers. I have been a loyal Verizon since 2003, but my most recent experience is enough to drive me straight into the arms of T-Mobile and take them up on their offer to buy me out of all 6 contract agreements on my Verizon account.
I recently attempted to upgrade my device online. It was a relatively seamless process until I reached the end and got to the shopping cart. I elected to pick my phone up in the nearest store but to do so you have to pay online with a credit or debit card. You do not have the option to bill your account or pay in the store. As it turns out, the billing zip code that is associated with your credit card MUST match the service address zip code on your Verizon account. I am an identity theft victim and because of this all of my mail goes to a Post Office Box for security reasons. I obviously do not live in a Post Office Box, so my service address will never match the zip code on my billing address.
I am keenly aware that this is probably done for security reasons. Verizon doesn't want people obtaining a compromised account and sending a phone just anywhere. However, I was not opting to have anything shipped to me. I was picking up in the store so it should not matter what my billing zip code is.
The part that was most frustrating was the customer service individuals that I spoke with suggested things like (1) I should contact my bank and all of my bank statements and credit/debit card statements come to my house or (2) update my Verizon service address to the physical address of the Post Office even though I don't live there. When I was told to do option 2 listed above, I was told I had to log out of my account for the change to take effect and then re-log back in only to lose my entire order. All of this just to place an order and pick it up in a store. All I needed to do was just pay for my phone.
I next gave up and went in to the store. After an hour of waiting and trying to figure out where the problem was, the Verizon store couldn't take the coupon code that the customer service person had given me online. Translation - after all of this frustration with a dead-end result, I learned I was going to have to pay about $100 more for my phone. I walked away.
I went back online and the only option I had was to go back to square one and re-order online and this time, elect to have the phone shipped and billed to my account. I chose overnight shipping and just learned that the phone was shipped UPS ground and will be delivered after 5 days.
Needless to say, this has all been extremely disappointing and the most frustrating part is that it is all avoidable with a simple programming change. All of this was totally unnecessary. As an identity theft victim, I will NEVER have my mail delivered to the mailbox in my neighborhood. Does Verizon really want to offer that as a suggestion for people who want to buy a phone? Do they want to be responsible for the results? With identity theft being the fastest growing crime in America, somehow I just don't see that as a viable solution. There are many, many people just like me who don't have the same physical and billing addresses.
Finally, I will leave you with this question... Have you ever had this much trouble placing an order and paying for that order online? If I went to a store and purchased a phone in the store, would Verizon's payment processor care that the billing address on my credit card was different from the physical address where I live? NO! Companies are typically ready to take your money! It shouldn't be this hard to just pay someone for a phone.
If anyone can point me in the direction of how to make sure someone from Verizon Corporate is aware of this problem and that this is taken under consideration for future enhancements/changes to their eCommerce system it would be much appreciated.Hi,
I think your process level evaluation id is not true, that is the reason system skips the process level.. Can you check your evaluation event-expression code. What do you see in SLG1? For testing purpose change the evaluation id to 0EV000 and check. Make Sure you debug through the user(requester) that you are creating the SC. Please test and let me know...

WARNING with latest kernel: at net/mac80211/driver-ops.
Hi. i'm running the latest kernel and having many kernel oops like the attached, any ideas? is this a problem already in upstream? should I open a bug report in archlinux? I'm thinking to switch to LTS.
TIA.

JMF crashed with Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebook using latest driver.
JMF crashed with Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebook using latest driver
I can't register the webcam in JMF. WinXP crashed with Blue-screen-of-dead.
The crash occurs on installation of JMF when the installer tries to detect my capture devices.
Windows also crashes when i open the JMF Registry Editor and tell it to search for my capture devices.
I use a QuickCam Pro for Notenooks with driver version 11.80.1065.0000 on Windows XP with JMF 2.1.1e.
PS: I can use JMF to connect to other brand's webcam.
So, how to solve it?So, how to solve it?JMF apparently doesn't work with that camera...so if you want to install JMF, you should unplug your Logitech cam. If that doesn't work, uninstall it.
