In place upgrade of Server 2003R2 STD to 2008 SP2 fails at "Gathering Files"

I have a customer with two identical Dell servers. They both had Server 2003R2, and are both DC's. I did an inplace upgrade on the primary server in December to Server 2008 SP2 STD x86 without issue. I have since gone onsight to upgrade the second server
to 2008 and the installation fails at the "Gathering Files" part of the installation.
I have tried new medai, checked the event log. All I get is a popup that says "Installation encountered and error and cannot continue" and then I am back to the 2003 desktop. All of the pre-work completed without fail as to the domain prep etc. I cannot
find any reference on line as to this issue save for a few regarding Vista. I know Vista and Server 2008 SP2 are the same kernal, but the one solution I found was to remove user accounts, which i cannot do as its AD controller.
Please advise, as this is a remote customer and I only get on site 2 to 3 times a year and this upgrade is behind schedule. Thank you in advance for your asistance.

Hi,
I suggest performing a Clean Boot first. This can reduce third-party software conflictions during the upgrading.
Clean Boot
========
1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility.
Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
4. Restart the computer and test the issue.
Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility,
check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK".
Then upload all unnecessary hardware devices such as sound card, network card and external USB drives.
Now upgrade to Windows Server 2008 again.
If any error message appears, please let me know the exact wording of the error message.
In addition, please upgrade the following files (if they exist) to

  • Windows Server 2003 32bit in-place upgrade to Server 2008 32bit

I'm attempting an in-place upgrade from Server 2003 to Server 2008.  The upgrade will proceed through 3 reboots until it reaches 77% complete and then just stops.  I'm assuming that there is a problem with a driver, but I have no way to be sure
since there is never any error message.  If I hard-reboot it will roll back to the original OS.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Any ideas?

I'd check the log file for the hang/rollback reason.

  • In-place upgrade from Server 2012 to Server 2012 R2

I have a Dell PowerEdge 1850.  I installed Server 2012 Standard. This works fine.  I made it a domain controller in an existing domain.  I also added Print Management Role.  This was working fine.
I then did an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2.  Now it is stuck in a rebooting loop.
It says "Your PC needs to restart. Please hold down the power button.  Error Code: 0x000000C4.  Parameters: 0x0000000000000091, 0x00000000000000F, 0xFFFFF803827DCA00, 0x0000000000000000.
I cannot get out of this loop.  Others have said they have this problem when installing with virtualization.  However, I am installing on the native hardware.  The CPU does not support hardware virtualization.
This worked fine with Server 2012.  In fact, I have 4 other Domain Controllers that are identical to this one running Server 2012.  Did Server 2012 R2 add a CPU feature check that is hampering this?

The 1850 is a pretty old box.  What you are running into sounds like the lack of a proper disk driver for the box (I've had that happen multiple times during new releases).  The disk driver needs to be provided by Dell.  I don't believe Dell
supports the 1850 with 2012 R2, so getting a driver for it might be a bit of a challenge.  You can find which servers Dell supports under the different versions of Windows Server by checking out
    www.windowsservercatalog.com.
Microsoft only puts supported device drivers submitted by the vendors well ahead of time on the distribution media.  Seeing that you were able to get 2012 running on the 1850s earlier, my guess is that you had separate media for the driver that you
used during the installation.  There is a place during the installation that allows the loading of device drivers that are not on the installation media.  If you can get Dell to give you a driver for 2012 R2 for the 1850s, maybe you can update the
driver under 2012 and then update the OS.
Personally, though, I never upgrade a domain controller in place.  It is so easy to simply create a new one and add it to the domain.  Then, if you do have a driver for 2012 R2, you can load it during the clean installation.

I compared the registry with a working system but the Counters - and all other keys - looked fine.
At the same time as upgrading a DC a colleague was updating an unrelated server, and he started to see similar events in the event log (but for the Dell OpenManage Essentials service, not ADWS). The error was complaining about KERNELBASE.dll which set my
spider sense tingling. We knew that this server had Windows Updates pending. Fully updating it solved the problem on that server.
I solved the ADWS problem in the end by fully Windows Updating the DC. In particular, the ADWS Service started successfully after installing KB2919355 and rebooting. That also
'unlocked' a further 59 updates pending.
After the in-place upgrade I always fully Windows Update but I'm 99% certain that KB2919355 did NOT show up when I did a Check for Updates straight after a reboot so I thought the DC was up-to-date. I then spent hours investigating the ADWS problem and rebooted
as part of the diagnostics. It was then that I noticed on the logon screen that there were updates pending...
Moral of the story? Windows Update, then Update again, and again, and again. The length of time it takes to Windows Update after an upgrade from 2008R2 to 2012R2 is painful though.

  • In-place upgrade from Server 2012 to 2012R2 "just quits"

Would appreciate any suggestions that don't involve doing a detailed documentation capture of how the server is configured followed by a clean install, that is what I'm trying to avoid if possible.
I am not trying to do anything special or scripted, just a standard OS upgrade.

Hi Pepper, Malort, Robert and Brandon,
I am experiencing the same issue using either new release (april 2014) or the gold release 2012 R2 DVD from Volume license (SA) download. Both confirmed working on other installations. Setup just suddenly quits with the same non existent logs
files in $windows.~bt and c:\windows\setupact.log has a warning statement "Failed to change the UI language to en-US"
The server is running as a vm and would otherwise appear to be running perfectly. It is a DC(GC), DHCP, DNS & CA for my site.
Going to try System Update readiness Tool KB947821-v33.
Heads up MSFP Anne, any word on the cause and/or fix?

  • In-place upgrade: Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2

I have a Windows Server 2012 physical server running Exchange Server 2013.   Microsoft has stated that Exchange Server 2013 Service Pack 1 (or CU4 in the new parlance) will finally allow Exchange Server 2013 to support Windows Server 2012 R2.
Although Exchange SP1 has not yet been released, I want to do some advance effort planning.   If I apply Exchange SP1, will I be able to run an in-place setup/upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2?  Thanks.

    Hi,
Since Windows Server 2012 R2 is not currently listed as a supported OS platform for Exchange 2013, it is
not recommended to update the OS on your Exchange servers to Windows server 2012 R2 at the present. For more detailed information, please refer to the link below:

  • In-place upgrade from Server 2012 to 2012R2 is failing

    Hello,
I'm trying tu upgrade a VM from Windows server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2, but the upgrade is failing with an error message "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.

Can anyone help me with this issue?
    Regards,

Yes, domain admins are members of the local administrator group when the macine is joined to a domain, but the opposite is not true.  Local admins are not necessarily members of the domain admins group.
    . : | : . : | : . tim
    Tim,
Yes i Understand that a local administrator is not always a domain administrator, but i think this has nothing to do with my problem.
To be sure i have logged in to this server with the local administrator user and started the upgrade again. As expected I got the same error message, so this is nog a permissions problem.
Can somebody who can help me to solve this probleem?
    Regards,
    Tom

  • In place upgrade to 2012 R2 fails, Setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of windows will be restored.

I have multiple Windows Server 2008 R2 machines in which I am attempting to do an in place upgrade to 2012 R2, and it is repeatedly failing.
Setup gets all the way through, and it says Getting ready, followed immediately by an error saying: Setup can't continue.  Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored.
    I am attempting to install:
Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server with GUI)
    x64 Date modified 3/18/2014
I have found several posts, many discussing how disk space can be an issue, I have increased disk space so it shouldn't be an issue.  I have also made sure the only only partition on disk 0 is C: and system reserved.
I have disabled all unessential services and went through and removed all unessential applications, and extras.  Still getting the error.

Any ideas on how I can resolve this, or further troubleshoot?

I also had this error: "Setup cannot continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored."
    trying to do a in-place upgrade of a Domain Controller Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2.
The problem was the separated System Reserved Partition. After I removed using this instructions:
    http://jacobackerman.blogspot.com/2012/12/how-to-remove-system-reserved-partition.html
The upgrade ran ok, and now have my DC as Windows 2012 R2.
    Hope that helps!.

  • Hyper-V host server upgrade from Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre

We are about to upgrade our Hyper-V host servers from Server 2008R2 Enterprise SP1 to Server 2012 R2 Datacentre to take advantage of the latest Hyper-V features.
This only concerns the host servers and not the guest VMs running on the hosts (they will be upgraded next year).
This is what is running on our host servers:
    Host 1
    File,print & issuing CA server
    Exchange 2010
    SharePoint 2010
    Quickbooks server
    Domain controller 1
    Offline CRL CA
    Host 2
    SQL 2008
    Forefront TMG 2010
    Domain Controller 2
    Windows 7 client
With this is mind, I have drafted a rough action plan as follows:
Create a list of all file locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
    Document all existing system settings
Gather server information, download drivers, RAID controller and other boot drivers & firmware updates (in case the in-place upgrade fails)
    Test all software media
Copy all VMs onto external data storage (NAS drive)
As part of the upgrade process we will redistribute some hard drive space i.e.
expand them to their new sizes and verify the data integrity of copied VMs by powering up each VM in a test environment
Wipe and adjust the sizes of the host partitions to accommodate the expanded VMs
Perform an in-place upgrade to Server 2012 R2 Datacenter
    Check EV, services etc
Change the default locations for VM memory, snapshots, virtual memory and Hyper-V config files
Upgrade Anti-virus and other system software
    Test the system
Are there any glaring omissions? Does anyone have any tips they can give me?

    Hi Marco,
always do a fresh Installation of your hyper-V Hosts, you could end up doing a lot of Troubleshooting with Drivers,Addons etc.. new Installation ist way faster.
Depending if you have a Cluster or Standalone Servers there are different ways to do it.
When you have installed your 2012 R2 Hyper-V Server you just can Import the VMs from the new Location.
As far as i know VMs with snapshots are not supported, so you have to remove them before doing that move and commit the changes to the vhd files, the VM need to be offline on 2008R2 to do that.
You do not Need to Export the VMs on 2008R2, just copy it, normaly you should have all Files of a VM in one Folder.
A working Backup is always your friend on such Tasks.
When the VMs are running on Hyper-V 2012R2 do not forget to Update the Integration Services.
Make Sure your Servers Hardware are still supported with 2012R2, see Server Catalog and Support Matrix of the Vendor.
And last one, where possible and supported convert the VHDs to VHDx Disks, after testing the first boot of the VM.
    Udo

  • Upgrading Win Server 2008 R2 to Win Server 2012

I'm trying to upgrade a production server from 2008 R2 Standard to 2012 Standard. The compatibility check reports no issues and the install progresses as one would expect (I get green tick-marks for each stage of the upgrade). Eventually it gets to the last
part of the upgrade which is apparently just a clean-up of the files it used during the installation. Just before the final reboot a message pops up saying "Installing Windows was cancelled. Setup can't continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous
version of Windows will be restored". The server then reboots and rolls back to 2008 R2. There's nothing in the error log (it's completely empty) and I don't receive any indication of a problem during the install so I've no idea what the problem is or how
to troubleshoot it. I've performed other upgrades without any problems. The server is a Hyper-V server and doesn't run any other software so it's Microsoft through and through - nothing out of the ordinary.
Does anyone know what the final task is during an upgrade to 2012 and why this would cause a rollback of the server? I can't see why a clean-up of setup files would cause such a serious problem that the upgrade would need rolling back. Infact I'm pretty
sure that if I could prevent the rollback the server would boot into 2012 without a problem. Strange (and a little frustrating) particularly as the error message gives no clue as to the cause of the problem.

I also had this error: "Setup cannot continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored."

  • In Place Upgrade RDS sever 2008 R2 to 2012 R2

    Hi
I have a single RDS server 2008 R2 running the roles of RDGM, RDLM, RDSHC, RDWAC an Remoteapp manager. I want to do a in place upgrade to Server 2012 R2. Is this a supported path? Are there any step by step guides available?
    Thanks
    Gus

    Hi Gus,
    Sorry for the delay.
As TP suggested. Only RDG and RDL are supported for upgrading or migration. Other role are supported or upgrading or migration due to architecture changed.
Regarding the guide for setting up RDS 2012, please refer to the following:

  • Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.6.8 I can't connect to a smb share on Windows Server 2003r2

Hi recently i upgraded from Mac OS 10.5.8 to Mac OS 10.6.8 on a 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro 1,1.
Prior to upgrading to 10.6.8 i had a viable connection to a Windows Server 2003r2 which hosts Pre-press client and all out work files as well as client applications. Now I can not connect to the server. I can ping the server. I can connect to another SMB share on different Windows Server 2003r2 that is our secondary server, but i can not connect to the primary. The Client software is associated with data base tracking the data.
This share does not show up in my volumes but I have a Max Host File with the share defined.
Can anyone come up with a solution to this. I have contacted my support for the Server 2003r2 Client software but they don't have a solution beyond clean installing the computer.

  • Compatibility_level on SQL Server 2012 in-place upgrade

    Hi all,
Based on BOL, master and user databases' compatibility_level will not be changed to 110 on SQL Server 2012 in-place upgrade.
    Database Compatibility Level After Upgrade
The compatibility levels of the tempdb,
    model, msdb and
Resource databases are set to 110 after upgrade. The
master system database retains the compatibility level it had before upgrade.
If the compatibility level of a user database was 90 or 100 before the upgrade, it remains the same after upgrade. If the compatibility level was 80 or less before upgrade, in the upgraded database, the compatibility level is set to 90, which is the
lowest supported compatibility level in SQL Server 2012.
I get the some result in our environment. So in-place upgrade SQL 2008 instance to SQL 2012 (both standalne and clustered), master/user databases' compatibility_level is 100. I also try to use SQL 2012 new function
    OFFSET and FETCH, it works.
My concern is, whether we have to manually update the compatibility_level to 110? As SQL 2012 new features seem work even with compatibility_level <110, is there any problem if we leave it?
(I didn't find any document about this, and related change metioned as a step for SQL 2012 in-place upgrade.)
    Any thoughts?

So the idea is that if you have applications that are dependent on behaviour that changes, you can stay with the old compat level. I believe that there is some upgrade assistant to investigate whether this applies to you.
On the top of my head, I don't recall any differences between compat levels 100 and 110, but there surely are some. But there are no new reserved keywords as I recall. And some things break even with the old compat level. (COMPUTE BY and the old RAISERROR
syntax for instance.) So I don't think it is particularly brave to change the compatibility level. Change it back if something really breaks.
The risk if you don't change it now, is that you have code developed on a dev server with compat level 110, which breaks when you deploy in production. And this happens one year from now, and no one recalls that this server has compat level 100, so it
causes a lot of confusion and waste of time.

  • SCSM 2012 R2 - In-Place Upgrade to Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello,
is an in-place upgrade of the underlying OS from Windows Server 2012 to Windows Server 2012 R2 supported by SCSM 2012R2. I know of some products where it is supported, some where it isn't (e.g. Exchange) but I haven't found any information on SCSM (Management,
    DW, SQL, DWSQL).
    Thank you in advance.
    Regards
    Sascha

i would never recommend upgrading the OS on any production environment, especially you have any virtualization and can stand up the new OS on the same hardware.
that being said, i don't see any obvious reason this would fail, but i don't thing it would be obviously supported either.
