  • How come the JRE uses == to compare Strings?

    I was looking through the source of javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicComboBoxUI and came across this:        public void propertyChange(PropertyChangeEvent e) {
                String propertyName = e.getPropertyName();
             JComboBox comboBox = (JComboBox)e.getSource();
                if ( propertyName == "model" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "editor" && comboBox.isEditable() ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "editable" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "enabled" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "focusable" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "maximumRowCount" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == "font" ) {
                else if ( propertyName == JComponent.TOOL_TIP_TEXT_KEY ) {
                else if ( propertyName == BasicComboBoxUI.IS_TABLE_CELL_EDITOR ) {
             else if (propertyName == "prototypeDisplayValue") {
             else if (propertyName == "renderer") {
            }So
    1) Is there a valid reason for the developer to have used == instead of .equals(...) to compare Strings?
    2) How does the code work consistently with this anomaly?
    Similar use of == and not .equals(...) is seen in many other swing classes.
    Doesn't affect me, but I would be interested to know if anyone can throw some light on this.
    Thanks, Darryl

    DeltaGeek, thank you for your response.
    Paul, I think I understand what you are saying, but the String reference propertyNamein this case comes from e.getPropertyName() from the PropertyChangeEvent class, not from within the BasicComboBoxUI class.
    I gather that all loaded classes share the same String pool, and that's how this works correctly. But in that case any comparison of a String variable to a literal String using == should also work.
    Then why the brouhaha about never using == to compare Strings?The key thing here is that the String returned by getPropertyName() must have come from a String literal. For example, in javax.swing.JComboBox:
    firePropertyChange( "maximumRowCount", oldCount, maximumRowCount );This string literal will be the same instance as the string literal in the code you posted.
    If they had instead done something like
    String s = "RowCount";
    boolean isMaximum = true;
    firePropertyChange((isMaximum ? "maximum" : "minimum") + s, oldCount, maximumRowCount );In this case, the String literal "maximumRowCount" is not used, but rather created from a concatenation at runtime, so it's likely that the comparison would fail.
    Note that the following would be the same String literal because this concatenation would be done at compile-time, not runtime:
    "maximum" + "RowCount"As for why, I agree with DeltaGeek: performance.

  • Does anybody have a Rpm to Mph converter because I want to see how fast the fan is running on my computer?

    I have a I mac and I have Istat Pro and I wanna find how many mph it is running at!

    Fan speeds are normally measured in rpm's, not mph's.   You would need to know the dimensions (esp circumference) of the fan to do a mph conversion - you'd have to take your Mac apart to discover the size of the fans.
    iStatPro will tell you the fan rpm's, as will iStatMenus
    Is there a specific reason you are concerned about the fan speed, or are you just curious?   Basically, as long as the fan doesn't sound like a jet engine, things are fine.

  • Update from 4 to 5 results in bookmark scrolling jamming not matter how fast the mouse is configured in OSX 10.5.8 - very annoying!

    Sorry cannot specify it in much further detail: Select "Bookmarks" in the topmost Firefox screen pick list; this now opens in mid screen, in contrast to the older version. OK, try scrolling down. If, like me, one has more than a screen's worth of bookmarks, you may need a quick mouse scuttle... at this point the latest Firefox Bookmark seizes the opportunity to 'grab' and 'stick with' the bookmark it's randomly landed on. This usually is not the one one ultimately wishes and necessitates re-opening the bookmark function and trying to skirt around outside the bookmark 'window.' The old version certainly did not do this. Please advise!

    1. The only requirement Apple has made on http://www.apple.com/macosx/ for the $29 version of Leopard is that it is Leopard that you have to upgrade to Snow Leopard. 10.5.2 is a version of Leopard, therefore there should be no reason to upgrade to 10.5.8 first, unless you have some software that is currently only 10.5.8 compatible.
    2. Combo update of 10.5.8 is essentially the only version that will take 10.5.2 to 10.5.8 without any intermediate updates applied in between. At least two backups* before installing 10.5.8 is a must too.
    3. Wikipedia has a listing of known compatible applications with Snow Leopard. However, as Snow Leopard isn't going to be out till Friday, any last second changes may change this listing fairly soon. Since no one under non-disclosure can tell us whether or not there are changes such as these, we'll have to just wait and see. That's why I strongly recommend making at least two backups*, and not having any third party peripherals connected when the actual update is performed. Dismount any peripherals before restarting with the Snow Leopard installer. Or disconnect them after shutting down the machine and before running the Snow Leopard installer.

  • How do the Apple Wireless Devices Compare?

    I have a Motorola 3347-02-10ENT DSL router. I was thinking about disabling the wireless capability on the Motorola and upgrading to an Apple Airport Extreme and a couple of Expresses. I have a couple of quextions
    Questions -
    1- Should I even bother with disabling the Motorola as the wireless base and avoid the cost of the Airport Extreme? Has anyone made a comparison and found the Apple devices better? Any reasons why (for or against)?
    2 - Instead of the Apple Airports, would it be worth waiting for the Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter that promises up to 500Mbps? Is this faster than the wireless solution?
    Here is the diagram of my existing home network -

    Sorry, can't give you specifics on a comparison of the Motorola and Apple AirPort Extreme, but would offer a general comment that your proposed system will place very heavy demands on a wireless network backbone.
    Video streaming, gaming, etc. is going to be "iffy" in my opinion, because you need as much bandwidth as possible for the network.
    If you decided to use the AirPort Extreme, it will handle Gigabit ethernet, 1000 Mbps. But, you would have to connect everything using CAT6 or CAT5e cabling, which may not be possible.
    If you can't run the ethernet cable, the next best bet would be the powerline devices you mention. IF...they perform up to spec, they would offer a bit less than half of the bandwidth capability of gigibit ethernet, "up to" 500 Mbps, according to your post.
    The very best wireless networks can handle up to a bit less than 300 Mbps. But, this is at 5 GHz and 5 GHz signals do not hold up well over distance or penetrate obstructions nearly as effectively as conventional 2.4 GHz wireless.
    But, at 2.4 GHz, you are limited to a bandwidth of up to 130 Mbps. In theory, this will work for video streaming. In practice, it may be another matter if any interference issues arise.
    Your network may work fine as proposed, but I would advise you to use ethernet where you can as a first choice, powerline second and wireless a distant third.

  • How does the Mac App Store compare to MacUpdate Desktop?

    So far I have been using MacUpdate desktop to keep ALL my apps up-to-date, a very easy process. With the advent of the Mac App Store I now have to deal with two processes to achieve that.
    What do all think about the usefulness of creating a separate and closed update environment with the Mac App Store? Is this better? Or not?

    MacUpdate Desktop will find updates to over 30,000 (and growing every day - MacUpdate is updated 24/7) Mac apps, screen savers, widgets, pref panes, and plug-ins. The MAS will only manage and update apps you have purchases from Apple through the MAS, and will not update non-apps (widgets, pref panes, screen savers, or plug-ins) and the MAS does not contain many popular commercial applications from major software companies. The MAS also requires an Intel Mac and Mac OS 10.6 or later - MacUpdate Desktop will run on PPC and update PPC apps too, on Mac OS 10.5 or later. You can easily browse and search for apps on MacUpdate.com, and then with a single click, have MacUpdate Desktop download and install any app of interest. The community support on MacUpdate.com - reviews and similar app suggestions - make discovering new apps fast and easy. Any apps purchased from MacUpdate Promo will also be displayed in MacUpdate Desktop, allowing you to easily download and install them as well. MacUpdate actively develops and updates MacUpdate Desktop and continues to add new features and benefits. Feel free to contact MacUpdate with any further questions - desktop<at>macupdate<dot>com.

  • How does the Office Excel 2011 compare to 2010 Windows?

    My professor said that 2010 is required to use and that 2007 does not have all the features. Is the Mac 2011 very similar to 2010 that I would be fine using 2011. If for some reason it's not, do I need to have a program if I need to get the 2010 on my computer, or is that even possible? My school's library, public library, work, my netbook, etc... all have office 2007. I would love your input. I bought my iMac last March and it has 2011 on it. Thanks.

    You should probalby post your question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software, as they're specific to your question and Apple Communities only provide support for Apple products:

  • How fast is the new iPod Camera Connector

    I'm wondering how fast the new $29 Apple iPod Camera Connector is for offloading images from a fast CF card using a fast USB 2.0 card reader? (The older Belkin system for the regular iPods was too slow, in my opinion, to be usable for high capacity memory cards with lots of images.)
    If this new option from apple is fast, I'm going to buy an iPod photo right away!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks!

    Any chance that you can test with a card reader to see if that works? That is, can you plug an external card reader into the camera connector, remove the card from your camera and plug it in to the card reader, and transfer to the iPod that way? (This would allow one to not burn their camera battery while downloading the images, or to swap out cards and continue taking photos while the first card was dumped to the iPod.)
    The Coolpix 3200 is apparently not USB 2 / high-speed compliant, so especially cool would be if you could test with a camera or card reader (if that works at all) that supported USB 2, and report on the speed.
    (Yeah, I know I'm asking for a lot. Just in case you're able to check this out.)
    While we're at it - any other comments, pro or con, about the camera connector or experience so far?
    Thanks!

  • How fast is the ipad 4 chip a6x

    How fast is Ipad 4 with A6X chip? What is the size of my quad graphics?

    "How fast" doing what"? Or compared with what? As stated, your question is sort of "how high is up". We need to know what you wish as a comparison or benchmark before anyone can offer meaningful commentary. You can, if you wish, just search the web for something like "iPad fourth generation benchmarks" and you should find sites that have run basic tests and comparisons with earlier iPads and probably with other tablets, though such cross-platform tests are often inaccurate.
    I don't know what you mean by "size of my quad graphics". Can you please explain further what it is you wish to know?
    Regards.

  • NB550D - How fast is the SDHC slot?

    I wanted to add an SDHC card but was unsure how fast the slot is in this notebook. Could it make full use of a 60MB/s card or is the reader going to be the bottleneck?

    Hi buddy,
    I never heard that card slot speed is limited. Usually its depending on the SD or SDHC card.
    Where did you saw a SDHC card with 60 MB/s? Fastest SDHC card is known to me is SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s and they are really fast. I only use this brand of SDHC cards and never had any problems with performance or something else. They are fast enough for recording FullHD movies for example :)

  • How fast is the new Mac Pro 8 core comparred to Mac Pro 4 core?

    Hi,
    I consider to update my 1.5 year old Mac Pro 2.66 ghz (4 core) to a Mac Pro 8 core. I use this machine as the center in my studio running Logic 8. I use a lot of V.I. and plugs.
    Can anyone tell me anything about the gain in performance that is possible upgrading to an 8 core?
    Or show me where to find information. MacWorld use to be my resource in that kind of matters, but they never use Logic as a test program.
    Thanks in advance!

    Glenn,
    The new Mac Pro will be faster at everything when compared to your older PowerMac, but I think the first 2 items you list will be more dependent upon drive speed.
    1. The FSB and memory are faster in the new Mac Pro, but reading from the CD will only be as fast as the optical drive can handle.
    2. How fast the TIFF file is displayed in the Finder may be more dependent upon the read speed of the hard drive than the processing speed required to create the thumbnail view displayed by the Finder.
    3. Working in CS3 should definitely be faster. Even though you didn't want a response that linked to a test, the following BareFeat test should show how much faster CS3 is on the new Mac Pro.

  • How fast is Image.getHeight ()?

    Can anyone tell me how fast the Image class' getHeight () and getWidth () methods are? Do these do some sort of complicated analysis on the picture, or do they simply return a variable that Java computes when the image is created?
    Here's the thing: I'm making a game. In this game, there are a lot of collisions. I check every object for collision with every other object. Thus I have about n^2 collision checks if there are n objects on the screen. Since there may be up to 50 objects on the screen at once, this could be as much as 2500 collision checks per frame = 50,000 collision checks per second. Each collision method calls the getHeight () and getWidth () methods several times. Unless they are very fast, I might not be able to use this in my program.
    Thank you for all your help.

  • TRFC internals - how does the async processing happen?

    tRFC internals - how does the async processing happen?
    Dear all,
    With the document "[https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/f078394a-4469-2910-c4bf-853c75674694|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/f078394a-4469-2910-c4bf-853c75674694]" there is an excellent place to read about SAP RFCs (remote function calls).
    Pages 94 to 96 describe in detail how tFRC (transactional RFC) works.
    However, there is still something unclear for me with the following sentence on page 94:
    "The truly exciting part happens when the program
    issues a COMMIT WORK command. The recorded calls
    are executed asynchronously in a special set of tRFC
    processing sessions created for each transaction ID..."
    Maybe someone can answer the following questions:
    a) what does exactly trigger and execute the tRFC?
    b) is it the ABAP runtime system itself, spawning the additional task in DIA?
    c) if multiple tRFC LUWs have been recorded, they are all executed in parallel by this procedure!?
    d) does the execution try to utilize all available DIA processes?
    e) how do the rdisp/rfc_... parameter come into the game?
       are they evaluated? We have seen all DIA occupied by the tRFCs executed!
    Best regards,
    Peter
    P.S.: if someone has answers to these ones, more related to error handling, would be great as well
    f) the jobs ARFC*, do they also use parallel processing?
       or is every ARFC* job responsible only for one single LUW?
       (note https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/366807 did not give a perfect answer)
    g) and how does the report RSARFCEX work compared to immediate execution?

    That's the problem, it won't.

    This piece of code looks at the SPDatabase's connection string (the SQL alias, for example) and executes a T-SQL query looking for that name within SQL Server. Since the SQL alias does not exist within the SQL Server's configuration, it will return a null
    value, and you won't be able to set up the AG config using the AG cmdlets.
    Also, since mobility exists by the very nature of using an AG Listener, using a SQL Alias is redundant.
