Inaccuracy problem in MT Phase Locked Loop VI

Hello,
I'm using MT Phase Locked Loop VI(PLL VI hereafter) in LabVIEW with NI USRP2920(Kind of IQ converter) to measure carrier frequency and phase of input signal.
The PLL VI works fine when relatively low frequency signals like 500Hz are input, but when it comes to high frequency like 30kHz, the accuracy of frequency and phase estimation in PLL VI is significantly degraded. In my implementation, MT Baseband PLL is selected as an instance.
Can anyone describe why this things happen?
If it is difficult to measure high frequency with this PLL VI, does anyone know appropriate way to measure input IQ signal's carrier frequency and phase?
Thank you for reading through.
P.S.
In my implementation, FDMA is adopted. So, above "carrier" means kind of subcarrier which is downconverted to the baseband as IQ.

Aha! I found a solution! For future people looking for the answer - I highly recommend THIS link as a set of files that will get you 90% of the way there
https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-1121
For people still reading - the difference is see in my attached JPG. The top example (mine) uses a multiply followed by a low pass filter. The problem is that that filter is non-monotonic with changing phase (i.e. that filter's DC output is maximum when phase is matched but decreases with both leading and lagging phase). The NI solution (bottom) is monotonic with phase (that is, phase difference between the LO and the input).
I can tell the NI solution is doing some complex (as in non-real numbers) math to extract the phase information. It looks a lot like in-phase & quadtrature extraction and maybe thats important. The key question I have going forward is - what does a blessed Hilbert Transform help me with ? What is its function? Reading the help - I do get a little buried in the Math of it.
-Thanks

  • Can anyone solve this Phase Locked Loop puzzle?

I created a Phase Locked Loop circuit using
Multisim10.0.   It uses the Multisim clock oscillator, and the circuit
    appears to work great.
    However,
I just discovered that if I use the same parts that I used to create
the Phase Locked Loop circuit in an oscillator circuit added to the
same schematic, the Phase Locked Loop circuit doesn't work any more,
while the new oscillator circuit pumps out a frequency that is way
off.  4+MHz is no where near 1kHz, the design frequency.
    What
happened?   The evidence says my newly-added oscillator brings in
something that kills a previously working circuit that uses the same
old parts.   Every part used was taken from the previously working
circuit, aside from the variable resistor values.  How did the Multisim
rules change from 10.0 to 10.1?  What am I missing here?
Did the Phase Locked Loop circuit really work to begin with?  Which circuit is the broken one?
    As
I see things, in order to solve this puzzle, I need to come up with a
factor that involves both circuits.  Some factor is going to kill both
    simultaneously.
Note what I'm saying here.  (At least when I ran
them this was the case.)  Delete just the oscillator circuit, and run
the circuit that remains.  It works.  Undo the deletion.  The
oscillator reappears where it was, and the previously working circuit
stops working.  There's something in that oscillator circuit that
kills.  It's like switching on and off a light bulb.

After all, I still can't predict what the next filenames I uplaod are going to look like, not yet at least.
However, at this point, it is safe to say it won't be what I uploaded.

  • I am trying to make a Phase Locked Loop and I have to produce a continuous output with the incom

ing data; so I should not use a buffer which is refreshed in every 3 seconds (by this way I am not able to get a continuous output). How am I going to obtain a continuous output signal which uses a continuous buffer (or no buffer maybe), from my DAQ board? When I try to produce a continuous output (a sine wave) according to a continuously changing input data, I see that the sine wave I can get from the DAQ board output has straight horizontal lines between waves. This means the buffer creates a wave, then stops until it fills, and then creates another output sine wave again; so I can't get a continuous sine wave output from the DAQ board. How am I going to deal with it when im

It looks like you need to increase your number of samples by quite a bit. Can you supply any more information, such as your sample rate, which DAQ vi you're using, etc?

  • Flexing phase locked drums knocks them out of phase

What am I doing wrong here...
I have 11 grouped drum tracks, in my group preferences I have selected "editing: phase locked audio".
I have started to do a bit of flex editing (slice mode), and after the audio is flexed a bit, I can hear serious "phasing" going on between the 11 tracks, even between just two of the tracks (like the overheads for instance), clearly as the grouped tracks are flexed, they no longer remain "phased locked", the timing shifts around between the tracks, sounds like the drums are going through a "phase-shifter" pedal effect or something.
I have tried this on two different rigs and in different projects, same results. Doesn't seem to always happen on all flexed sections, but happens enough that it is a big problem. Well, any time the phase would get knocked out is a big problem.
At one point when I was listening back to these phasing tracks, Logic 9 stopped and an error message came up: "too many disk I/O tasks , elastic audio (-10022)"...
I will mention that when this error came up, the only application open on my rig was Logic 9, there were no plug-ins or soft synths, samplers etc open, basically nothing but Logic 9.... and the project had only about 200 files / regions in it.... and I did not even do that much flexing, maybe had only 10 flex points or so. I have no other extra interfaces plugged into the rig, my machine is stripped down and clean. My dedicated internal SATA 7200rpm audio drive is only about 20% full and I now have 16GB or RAM.
So, before I blame Logic 9, my question is, what am I doing wrong? Is there some setting I am overlooking that needs to be checked in order to keep my grouped tracks truly phase locked to each other at all times? (Again, in my group settings for the drum group, I DO have "phased locked audio" checked)
Or, is this phasing issue a "necessary side-effect" of the flexing ability? Perhaps flexing is meant only for single tracks?
    Thank you.

Thanks guys... to answer a few things...
The drum tracks WERE recorded in Logic 9... through an Apogee AD16X / Symphony system.
I did read the support article and I had done everything "correctly" as the article outlines.
I do not see any extra flex points that might be causing issues.
One the 11 grouped drum tracks, I have no effects or processing running whatsoever... no reverb, no eq, no compression, etc. I do have my overheads and stereo room panned hard left right, everything else is pretty much in the center. Regardless, the tracks sound stable over the non flexed sections, sounds good.... but when I play over the flexed sections, I suddenly hear what sounds like a phase-effect happening, I'm 99.9% sure that what I am hearing is phase shifting, one or more tracks are no longer lined up with the others, at least in certain sections where flexing has occurred. I have even put everything in mono for kicks as a test, it sounds even worse that way just like you'd expect. I am monitoring on a set of HD600 headphones in a quiet room. Clearly there is some phase shifting going on. This has nothing to do with whether or not there exists phase conflicts between the different drum mics as recrded because during playback it will all be relative and stable... what I hear over the flex areas is a "shifting", it suddenly changes... this is not on the original tracks.
Thanks for the input so far!

  • Fluke 284 Arbitrary Waveform Generator Phase Lock Channel Synchronization

I am using Fluke 284 Arbitrary Waveform generator (not NI instrument). I am trying to make use of LabVIEW to assign channel 1 as the master and the other three as slaves to phase lock the slaves and change precisely the phase offset with respect to the master.
The error explanation that I received was:
    Possible reason(s):
    Error -1074000000 occurred at Fluke 28x Series.lvlib:Error Query.vi
Instrument reports:Inter channel lock not possible. Refer to manual for more details.
    Complete call chain:
        Fluke 28x Series.lvlib:Error Query.vi
        Fluke 28x Series.lvlib:Configure
I would like to know of there is any other block that I need to add to control the output of the master and the input of the slave. I have referred to chapter 13 of the users manual which I have also attached.

Hello My ipads Power button is not working properly when I press it once it shows option to turn off instead of locking and some other display problems like it suddenly lockes down or display disappears ...Please help. Thank You

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

  • Phase Locking the Up and Down Converter Modules

I am interested in phase locking the 5660 and 5670 modules, but from what I understand...this might not exactly be possible.
Using the 10MHz references...it seems that I can frequency lock the two together (i.e. - I can eliminate any phase error due to the two LO's drifting away from each other).  However...am I correct in assuming that there is no way to actually access the individual oscillators such that I can remove the phase difference between them?
For example...if I want to measure the phase added by a DUT....I would have to measure the phase without the DUT...then meausre the phase with the DUT...then look at the relative difference in the two phase measurements (as calculated from the IQ samples).  However, if I were to repeat this measurement by first measuring the phase without the DUT....then turn the generator off...then back on again....then measure the phase with the DUT...I'd expect to get a different answer, since by turning the device on and off, I have no idea or control over the phase relationship between the two devices.
    Is this correct?
Finally...does simply connecting say, the 10MHz Out of the upconverter, to the Freq Ref IN of the downconverter automatically frequency lock the two together...or do I have to go into LabView and programatically tell the things which reference to use?
    Thanks!
    Brandon

    Hi Brandon,
You are correct in what you are saying. The PXI-5600 and PXI-5610 Down/Upconverters each have their own synthesizers internally generating the LO signals for the mixers inside, and these LO signals cannot be exported from the modules. For these modules to be phase locked, they would need to share the same LO signals.
By sharing the 10 MHz reference you can achieve frequency lock where the phase difference between the two modules will stabilize, but the phase difference will not be zero - it will be some unpredictable phase offset which will not be increasing or decreasing (i.e. frequency lock). Whenever the 5600 or 5610 is retuned, the phase difference will also be different.
With regards to the 10 MHz signal, both use the same component for the reference so it doesn't matter which module you lock to the other as they are equivalent in quality. You do need to make a call in software to lock the destination module to the source module. If you are driving the PXI backplane with the source module, you'll also have to make a SW call to do this. This is very easy though, just look for VIs called Configure Reference Clock or something similar.

  • Phase Lock problem with a PXI-1000 chassis

As already discussed here, we had an application running smoothly on a 1042 chassis with a 8186 controller.
We generate two sine waves in phase quadrature, using two 5411 boards.
Unfortunately, we are now obliged to use a PXI-1000 with a 8170 controller, and we don't get anymore the expected results : the signals are generated with the correct frequency and amplitude, but the phase offset is totally unstable, as observed on an oscilloscop.
We are using the Synchronized wave generation NI example. Are we missing something ?
Please consider that we are not specialists in electronics, just plain biologists .
    We need help URGENTLY !!!

One thing that I noticed between the 1000 and the 1042 is that the 1000 has the Fan integrated with the power supply, so the fan is probably run off AC.  In the 1042, the fan is run off DC and as stated in the specifications greatly reducing electronic noise.  It could be that your phase offset is caused by the AC fan in the 1000.
You might want to try to move everything as far away from the power supply and fan as possible (if it is possible) to see if this helps at all.
Also, the 1042 and 1000 have a 10 MHz reference signal for timing pusposes to each of the modules.  The 1042 has an accuracy (skew) of 250 ps between each of the mudules.  The 1000 has a skew of 1 ns, obviously much greater of an error (less accurate), which could be causing some issues as well.
I do not know what freq you are operating at, but you may be able to filter some of the 60 Hz frequencies out with a smaller capacitor 0.1uF or so.
    Good luck.

  • Problem with cfhttp in a loop

    Hi,
I am reading an xml file that contains emails with attachments (one email per item/node, but may contain multiple attachments).  I am trying to save the attachments to our server.  So I'm looping over the multiple attachments of a single email and using cfhttp to GET the attachments from another server and save them with the same filename on our server.
The problem is that it works for the first attachment - it's saved to the server, status code is 200 OK - awesome!  But for any attachments after that, it does not save them and throws a Conection Failure error.  No matter what attachments they are.
In trouble shooting I tried several things.  First, inside of my loop of attachments, I can hardcode the cfhttp calls with the url and filename of the attachments - one right after the other - and all is perfect everytime!!  But it obviously needs to be dynamic.  I also tried to save a list of the attachment urls from the loop, and then call a separate cfhttp tag for each attachment in the list (so again, was in a loop) and it works for the first attachment in the list and not for the others (same errors as above).
Here's a simplified version of the code.  I can't put in the real xml url, and when I set the "attachmentFilename" I left out that code because it works and is too much code.  Also, the XML works fine.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions, and of course, if you need more info from me!!
    Thanks so much,

We've seen the peer not authenticated error quite a bit on our CFHTTP calls - are you trying to access the URLs via HTTPS?  It seems the SSL certificate keystore that CF ships with does not contain all the vendor SSL certificates out there - when CF can't authenticate a cert, it throws that "Connection Failure / Peer not authenticated Error".  In order to fix the issue, you have to import the SSL certificate of the site you are trying to access into the CF cert store on your server(s).  If you are using multiple servers, you will have to import the cert on each server.
I'm sure a google search will turn up a step by step guide on how to do this, but the basic steps are:
Go to a page on the SSL server.
    Double-click the lock icon.
    Click the Details tab.
    Click Copy To File.
Select the base64 option and save the file.
Copy the CER file into ColdfusionDir\runtime\jre\lib\security
Run the following command from the same directory (keytool.exe is located in ColdfusionDir\runtime\jre\bin) ..\..\bin\keytool.exe -import -keystore cacerts -alias UniqueName -file filename.cer
    Restart Coldfusion
    Hope that helps!

  • Please help! Major problems (performance and lock-ups) with brand new W520 with Intel 520 SSD

My company primarily uses HP machines but I've been a long time IBM (now Lenovo) fan so I recently had IT purchase me a new Lenovo W520 (product ID 42763LU).
Once the machine arrived I had them do the following:
Remove the 500GB HDD and replace it with an Intel 520 series 240GB SSD
Remove the optical drive and install the 500GB hard drive that came with the machine in the optical bay (with the bay adapter of course)
Format both drives and put a preconfigured windows 7 64-bit image on the SSD
A general summary of the system is the following:
    Intel i7-2860QM CPU
    8GB RAM
    NVIDIA Quadro 1000M
    Intel 520 240GB SSD (primary HDD) [SSDSC2CW240A3]
Hitachi 500GB HDD (optical bay) [HTS727550A9E365]
    Intel Advanced-N 6205 network adapter
    TouchChip Fingerprint Scanner
The machine was a few days delayed getting to me due to "hard drive driver issues" (that's what I was told). When I received the machine I immediately noticed that it was much slower than I expected (I have a custom built i5 HTPC at home running windows 7 on a Crucial SATA III SSD that I was comparing it to) and I was experiencing frequent hangs (ranging from 30 seconds to multiple minutes), super long boot times, general “slowness” at times, and occasional lock-ups. Since our "baseline" laptop here at work is the "equivalent" HP workstation my IT guys have been less than helpful in helping me to solve this issue. Being reasonably computer savvy I decided to try to try to fix the issue myself. I performed the following “troubleshooting” steps:
    1. One of the first issues (errors) I noticed in the event viewer was errors related to the optical drive. Clearly the image they installed on the machine was not from a machine with the same hardware configuration. So, I decided to just wipe the machine and perform a fresh install of windows 7 from the disks (well, USB). After spending multiple days installing windows, performing updates, making sure all the drivers were current, and installing only the critical software I need, I was disappointed to realize that although I fixed the optical drive errors the machine was still slow, was hanging, and locking up regularly.
    2. Removed the cover on the machine and removed/reinstalled the drive to verify it was secure.Everything looked good.
    3. Verified the latest firmware is installed on all my Intel hardware. Everything seemed up to date.
    4. I performed a number of troubleshooting steps like booting the machine with/without the battery, with/without the HDD in the optical bay, installed/removed from the docking station, etc. and none of these things helped (also a note – occasionally when running on the battery I was hearing a strange “buzz” or “static” sound coming from the area around the SSD).
    5. Next I did some internet research and learned quite a few things. First, it sounds like others have had similar problems with this machine and/or SSD combo and there were quite a few options suggested to “fix” these issues. The general consensus for troubleshooting steps were:
5.1. Download and install the latest Intel chipset drivers and AHCI controller drivers (overwriting whatever windows installs during updates). This didn’t fix anything.
5.2. Turn off PCI express link state power management in the power manager. This didn’t fix anything.
5.3. Disable superfetch, prefetch, indexing, defragmentation, page file, system restore, and hibernate. A few of these were already disabled by windows so in those cases I just verified they were disabled in the services and application editor. These things may have slightly increased performance but did not fix the major hang/lockup issues I was having.
5.4. I followed online steps to edit the registry to disable the PCI link power management by adding ports, adding the required variables, and setting them all to 0. This did seem to have fixed the hangs and/or lock-ups but the machine is still much slower than I would expect (boot times are still pretty slow and it does “stutter” when I’m doing more than one thing at a time. Also a note here – I have the Intel SSD toolbox installed and I noticed that it was giving me a warning for DIPM not being optimized. I made the mistake of clicking “Tune!” and then started having the hang/lock-up issues again. I went back into the registry and sure enough the PCI link power management variables for ports 0 and 1 were set back to 1. I set them back to 0 and the hangs have gone away. I will not be “tuning” the DIPM through the Intel SSD toolbox again…
    6. I also fixed a couple of other minor errors I was seeing in the event viewer by disabling benign services and/or making slight timeout modifications (I researched each issue on the internet to verify they were benign before I implemented any changes). These fixes didn't seem to do anything other than make some of the errors/warnings go away. So, the list of errors/warnings has become much smaller but I’m still getting the following (maybe an issue, maybe not?):
Event ID 37 for every processor saying that they are in a reduced performance state for xx seconds since the last report
Event ID 10002 - WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped
Event ID 4001 - WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully stopped
Event ID 27 – Intel® 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection link is disconnected
I suspect the WLAN errors have something to do with windows fighting with the Lenovo access connection tools?
    7. Since the machine still seemed slow I downloaded the program AS SSD and checked the performance of the SSD. When I compared my performance numbers to the benchmark numbers I found onlineI was very surprised to discover that I’m getting about 50% of the performance that I should (values below are read/write).

One more note - it seems like my cooling fan is running at a high speed almost all of the time. This is probably one of my power settings (I think I have it set for max performance) but it's even doing this when there is no load (i.e. I'm using IE and just vieweing webpages - like right now).
So, I apologize for such a long post but I’ve spent countless hours researching and troubleshooting this problem and haven’t been able to figure out what the heck is wrong here. Am I missing something simple or do you guys think I have a SSD and/or problem with the machine itself? To say that any and all help would be greatly appreciated would be a massive understatement – I’m on the verge of pulling my hair out and I really need this machine working as quickly as possible!
Please let me know if you have any suggestions and/or need additional information. Thanks in advance for your help!

Lol gotcha about the drive as an option. I didn't go SSD with mine. Do you have the latest firmware on your drive? It is supposed to be v1.97. Just checking (ah and I see item 3 so guess so). Do you have the SSD drive toolbox software installed?

Seems some useful tools are in there. I can't say much beyond that with the drive. Oh. Why does your fan always run at high speed? Can you describe that?  I mean, are we troubleshooting the right kind of issue? Is there anything else going on with your system? I saw about the reduced core speeds message. what are your system loads like? Anything causing high cpu utilization? Could be something other than the drive causing your low numbers and lockups.

  • Screen problems - black screen and lock-up (plus HDMI issues)

Hi, I'm not sure if these are related to the same fundamental issue, but they are both serious problems that need resolution.
I have a new mid-2012 MBPretina.  I am on all the latest updates (10.8.2).
The first problem is the most recent, and the most serious problem.  Since I updated the Java a couple of days ago I've been experiencing random black screens and lock-ups.  Essentially, what happens is that sometimes when I perform an action (opening an app, clicking a link on a webpage, performing other kinds of in-app actions, etc.) the computer screen will go black.  About half the time I can, through my own memory, try keyboard combinations to quit or force quit the most recently used app (the one where the action was just performed), and I will get some glimpse of the underlying apps, while the menubar and other areas will remain black until I move a window on top of the black space.  Sometimes no key combinations work and I am forced to perform a hard restart with the power button.  This is a serious issue, obviously, since I will lose current work/progress in my apps.  I'm not sure if this is because of the new Java update, or has to do with something else, but it started happening shortly thereafter, over the last 2 days.  I work most of my waking day on my laptop, and this "black screen of death" has happened about 5 or 6 times a day.
The second problem I have been experiencing since I starting using my MBPr with external HDMI displays in August/September.  The problem is that I will plug the MBPr into an HDMI display, the screen will temporaliy go black, and then bring me to the login screen (as if it's crashing, albeit softly).  This happens about 1 out of 4 times nowadays.
How can I fix these problems, especially the first?

    UPDATE:
Clearly there's a problem because a third of the way through a clean reinstallation from scratch it black screened again. Hmmmm.
Now this is not good. Problem is I can't rule out potential updates from Apple that might have caused this either.
    The search for solutions continues.
