Incredibly stuck!!

So, recently I tried to install my printer to my MacBook, but it wouldn't take my password, and I decided to exit the installation process, and it came up with many different windows of applications and information I didn't need. I then attempted to remove the disk, and through much hard work, it did. However, after I did this, (*and this is the main problem I need help with*)and had shut down and turned on the computer, a white screen came up. There was no cursor, or any response from the keyboard, only a flashing icon of a folder with a question mark. Nothing I did made any difference, until I tried to reinstall MAC OS X. This seemed to be working fine, I had gotten through the installation process quite well, until I reached the point where it was asking me to "Select a destination Volume to Install the Mac OS X software" However, there doesn't seem to be any way to continue. There aren't any icons, or options to choose as a destination, and therefore I can't continue with the installation! Please if anyone has any idea on what exactly I'm doing wrong, I would be more than happy to hear your solution!
Thanks for reading.

If nothing is showing to install to then it is not seeing the drive, or the drive has lost it's HFS+ header, or GUID... most likely the HDD is dead, but run the installer again...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
Does it show up in Disk Utility at all?

  • TS3299 Registry settings used by Itunes drivers for buring CDs are missing

So incredibly stuck on this and I have already removed and reinstalled Itunes about 3 times. I kept getting the message that "registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDS are missing. I followed all the instruction and even went to the  Registry Editor and right clicked UpperFilters and was shocked to see that GEARAspiWDM"  was already listed there--so the warning I keep getting that this driver is missing is wrong. Now what? Please help. I do not know how to work around this. Thank you

Can you post a screenshot of the contents of the key you've been editing, please? Include all of the regedit screen, including the left-hand column. Save the screenshot to an image file, and insert the image file in a reply by clicking the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window.
For example, this is what I'm seeing when I look at my key:

  • If I upgrade to Firefox 4 can I regain control of my browser's look, feel and functionality? Or would I be stuck with that incredibly stupid new interface?

I checked out Firefox 4 and was horrified by the new look. I'd like to have the latest version of Firefox, but I don't want to lose the look and functionality of my browser. I want my menu bar at the top, my bookmarks toolbar directly above the main window, and I want that ugly, intrusive "Firefox" button gone. (News Flash to Firefox developers: making users click a new button before they can access things that used to be in plain sight is NOT an improvement! It's a complication!) Is it possible that the only way to retain control of my browser and still have a current browser is to go back to using Internet Exploder?

You can download 3.5.18 from here: [http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/latest-3.5/win32/en-US/ Firefox 3.5.18] It's still supported at the moment. Older versions than that potentially expose your system to attack.
You'll have to uninstall the existing version before you downgrade though. To do that please follow these steps.
    * Go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).
    * Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    * Finally run the v3.5.18 installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.
Your bookmarks etc., are retained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the downgrade.

  • Magsafe Middle pin stuck down (small one) - how can I fix this?

I have a classic magsafe problem - the adapter will power the computer with no problems at all but the battery doesn't charge and the LED doesn't come on (or comes on incredibly faintly).
After hearing theories of anything from a dead battery to a banjaxed logic board, I tested it with another magsafe and the battery charged happily, while my magsafe refused to charge another Macbook (but powered it fine).
Looking closely, the middle pin (the tiny one) is stuck inside the adapter itself and does not return when the adapter is removed. This appears to be the reason for the adapter's failure to charge my battery.
I've always been an optimistic type and I simply refuse to accept that something as simple as a jammed pin would require a replacement or repair. Surely there is some way to fix this myself? I tried Apple's advice about moving it from side to side but as it's the tiny pin this is very difficult, I think their guide is designed with the larger pins on the left or right in mind.
Does anyone have any experience and / or advice on this?
My mind is open to the possibility that even if I free the pin, the spring behind it might be gone in which case it will continue to get "stuck". But it's worth a try.
I'm not being cheap by the way, but I only bought this adapter at the end of 2010 and to be honest I've had this same macbook for 4 years ang gone through about 7 magsafes. As adapters go, they are really, really filmsy! The most common problem I've had with them is melting holes in the flex which ends up burning through the actual wire, both disabling the charger and endangering my general wellbeing !
So what do people advise? Could I fix this at home without a massive hullaballo? I'm thinking of trying different magnets on it later on to see if any of them will pull the pin free but considering the power socket itself is magnetic I don't have much hope for that!

You need to make sure you use only one spelling for the band, and use Artist, Album Artist, Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist consistently across all their tracks. See my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums for more.

  • ITunes INCREDIBLY slow since library transfer to Mac

    Hi all
    Specs upfront:
    Mac Mini PowerPC 1.5gig
    Tiger with latest updates10.4.7
Bluetooth Apple Wireless Keyboard and Bluetooth Apple Wireless Mouse Pro
brand new Newertech ministack 500gb drive and later upgrade to 1gig memory (explained below)
My problem is that iTunes has been running INCREDIBLY slowly since I moved my library yesterday. Allow me to give some backstory.....
I purchased the mac mini last winter, and I have a large music collection that would not completely fit onto the mini hard drive at that time (approx. 330 gig - >73,000 files) - so what I did was get a crossover cable and networked my mac to my pc and would access my music files on my Windows iTunes library via the "shared library via network" option. It worked fine. I couldn't update track information nor change artwork as needed, but I could at least access my music, and it would do it at a fairly fast clip. When I first would select the Windows iTunes library the beach ball would spin for about a minute, presumably to load in the library informationfrom the PC, but then I could search change tracks, etc, with relative ease and spriteness. Additionally I could do other things on the mac (mostly just goof on the internet and check email, but occassionally do higher function tasks like edit photos in iPhoto or Photoshop elements.) Again, all without any problem.
So last week I took advantage of a sale online of the Newertech ministack drives, and bought a 500gb model. Via the crossover cable I transferred all the music files to the new external hard drive (which is either firewire or USB, my choice) - I accomplished this by making the library folders on the XP sharable, clicked "add to library" on the mac and chose the music folders on the XP, but then had the mac automatically copy the files to the Mac library and also set the Mac itunes to keep the library organized. This took quite a long time - probably close to 20 hours or so. I lost playcounts and the dates things were added, but I figured what the heck. Clean start on a new machine. And also figured that I would figure out a way to get that information moved eventually anyway.
This is when the problem started - and the source of my quandry that I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with.
When I first start iTunes it take a LONG time (about 3 miuntes) to load up - but then again, no problem as I figure it is reading the xml file. HOWEVER< When i now select a song, it will take a few seconds to begin to play, but then what's more odd it that it just about pulls my system down completely. And this is only using iTunes, and perhaps being online (via telephone line) - no other processor or memory intensive thing going on. Switching through songs is a nightmare, and has rendered the entire system non responsive at times forcing a restart.
Furthermore, when it will switch from one song to the other, the information window in itunes (that shows the songs, time elapsed etc) will hang - the next song will already be playing, but the old information will be there hanging - and then the information will "jump" to the current track (usually about 30-45 sconds into it) , but oftentimes I will get the spinning beach ball, as well as itunes not responding at all. Music stutters or cuts out completely for a few seconds. There have been times I've attempted to change information on the ID3 tag through itunes, but clicking the get information button has sometimes resulted in the dialogue box for said track not coming up until the next track is playing because of the beach ball spinning.
I went out and bought 1 gig of RAM for the machine (the max this model can take) and it has MOSTLY stopped the stuttering of the music as it plays (I was watching istat nano, and would notice when a track played my RAM would slowly go down from approx 200 meg free to about 5 meg free, and then the stuttering would begin) - installing the extra memory has stopped this mostly as I said although in watching the istat nano there is a significant chunk of memory being used during the first part of any song before it jumps back to less memory being used). From what I can tell however, it doesn't use up much CPU cycles (using istat nano)
What I find most aggrivating about this, is that when I NOW choose the shared playlist from my XP - it STILL works great as it did before. I can click through, have the computer play songs randomly, do search queues as before and it operates without a hitch, and those hard drives are on a different machine on the floor. Mind you I can't change any information on those tracks, but I can hear and search and change through songs, play, pause responds immediately no problems..........But when I switch back to the "local" mac library eveything goes to **** again. A few times iTunes has completely stopped responding, resulting in me having to force quit the appication.
So having said all that (and if you are still reading this, thank you - I know it is long windeed but figure too much information is better than just my saying "it's not working, how do I fix it" ) I understand that this is a rather large music file (used at my place of employment, I had the guys I work with add their music to it, and use it as a library for the workplace) but I'm sure also that there are others out there with much larger music collections who are doing this without a hitch.
What I HAVE tried so far is to repair the permissions (which were only on the internal Mac drive - no permissions were on the external drive according the the Utilities as that option was greyed out - is that normal? I'm still new to macintosh and have no idea what permissions are, other than people with similar problems as mine on the board were reccommended this as a potential remedy) - and of course I doubled my RAM as described earlier. When I installed the new memory I zapped the PRAM (two chimes on startup) and when I check system preferences the extra memory is showing as available. I even defragged the internal drive thinking that might help, but to no avail. I attempted running the hard drive using the firewire connection and then attempted the USB connection, again, with no luck.
It is most frustrating in that I was looking forward to FINALLY having everything on my Macintosh properly and all things running smoothly - but so far it has just been an aggrivation and has had me scratching my head wondering if I should just have left well enough alone and always have the Mac networked with the Windows machine, or even just stuck with the Windows machine ....... :: shudders ::
Should I delete the xml file and have iTunes rebuild it? Or should I uninstall iTunes and reinsall it? If so, on the internal drive, or on the external drive (provided I can even do that) - as I said before I have no favorite tracks or playlists on the mac yet, so I'd be losing nothing in trying it, and would gladly welcome anything that would resolve this.
I hope you can help, and I anxiously await your response which could be the soluton to my problem.
    Respectfully submitted,
    Len

  • Incredibly slow MacBook, Internal Hard Drive issues...

Good morning everybody! I'm apologize if this post is extremely wordy...
I am extremely baffled by a particular issue with a MacBook 2.0GHz C2D which belongs to a friend of mine. The warranty is expired.
    _Brief history:_
Several months ago, this MacBook could not find a bootable volume. The drive would not mount when booting from an external FireWire hard drive. It would not mount when the MacBook was put in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Mac. When booting from an external USB hard drive or with my MacBook Pro connected to the MacBook via Target Disk Mode, the MacBook booted up quickly. I came to the conclusion that the internal hard drive must have failed and needed to be replaced. Ultimately, the data was not recoverable from this drive.
I then proceeded to swap out the defective Apple OEM Seagate hard drive with a known working Apple OEM Fujitsu hard drive. When booting from the Leopard Install DVD, the MacBook would boot incredibly slow, but would finally reach the Installer Language screen. When proceeding to install Leopard, the drive would take a very long time to have data written to it, and ultimately the install failed. I removed the new hard drive from the MacBook and placed it in an external USB enclosure, attached it to the MacBook and booted from the Leopard Install DVD. Leopard would install successfully. I removed the hard drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it the MacBook. When booting from the freshly installed OS, the MacBook would take a very long time to boot. The MacBook is extremely slow!!!
I checked the Activity Monitor to ensure CPU & System Memory Usage was not going crazy. All Processes where normal with adequate CPU & Memory headroom.
I took the MacBook apart thinking that the SATA Controller Cable might be loose. No, it was firmly in place. I reassembled the MacBook and booted it up again. Still incredibly slow!
Finally, after several reboot attempts, the MacBook would book up quickly and operation was perfect. I applied all updates and continued testing the MacBook with great success. Gave my friend his MacBook back and he was grateful.
    _Now for the kicker..._
My friend brought me his MacBook a week ago complaining that the MacBook was operating extremely slow (much like when I was initially testing it before). I verified the MacBook was slow when I tried using it. I tried several reboots and then it would get stuck on the gray Apple with spinning gear.
I tried booting into Single User Mode, but it gets stuck on "Waiting for root device"
I put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and connected it to my G5 2.0GHz Dual Core. The hard drive would mount quickly on the G5 and I used Disk Utility to create a Restore Image. The disk operation would perform normally and the image would be created successfully.
I then partitioned the MacBook's hard drive when connected to the G5, ejected and proceeded to attempt OS reinstall. No dice! The hard drive is not even detected by the Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD.
Finally after several reattempts, the hard drive is recognized, but is extremely slow when trying to reinstall...and again, ultimately install fails. Using Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD, the hard drive fails to unmount when I try formatting.
I don't have Apple Hardware Test disc for the MacBook or Apple Service Diagnostics disc for this model. Running TechTool Pro shows hardware to be okay, disk controller onboard the Fujitsu drive is okay, but running SMART & Surface Scan takes a long, long time (which I'm certain will ultimately error out). Running Drive Genius takes a long, long time as well.
    Conclusion:
I think the SATA Controller Cable is defective. I can't think of anything else that would cause disk errors or performance issues like this. Your input is truly appreciated!

Even though no one responded to my post, I thought I'd share the resolution with the entire Apple community. I hope this information will be helpful to some of you with MacBooks or MacBook Pros that may be running painfully slow or may be exhibiting hard drive issues because your machine won't recognize the boot drive or fails to properly boot on a perfectly healthy S.M.A.R.T. verified hard drive. It just might be the hard drive connector/cable. Here it goes...
I visited my local Apple Retail Store and asked a "Genius" at the Genius Bar about this issue and told him my thoughts about a possible failed hard drive connector/cable. First, he didn't even know what a hard drive connector was! Then, he arrogantly stated that he never heard of such a thing and that these cables never fail. Finally, he blatantly dispelled this as a possibility.
On the contrary with my experience, I have had many failed PATA controller cables that required replacement when supporting the desktop PC's at work. I have personally owned and supported many Apple manufactured laptops and desktops and have never encountered this issue on a Mac...until this MacBook!
So, after looking at the Service Manual for the MacBook, I went over to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and purchased the Hard Drive Connector Apple Part #922-7579. I replaced the original cable, reassembled and proceeded to boot the MacBook with the Leopard DVD installer. The Fujitsu drive was immediately recognized and was able to be formatted and Leopard installed without incident. The MacBook boots off the internal hard drive as normal again and works nice and fast again.
Thank you all for your time!
    :D

  • Getting stuck in POST instead of restarting

    Hi guys.
I would appreciate some help here...
Whenever I apply (or at least try to) a setting in my BIOS menu, there is chance my mobo cannot handle it, which is fair and square.
BUT: Instead of rebooting and then rebooting again to say that my OC has failed or aomething like that to declare failure to apply settings, it just gets stuck before it posts! So here I am with a blank computer screen but with a pc which is apparently working... Of course no windows booting or HDD movement at all.. What can I do to fix this? I am tired of reseting the CMOS using the backplate button. Even though the SAVE SETTINGS menu is incredibly time earning in those cases, I dare say I am fed up with ClearingCMOS for a small mistake!!
    What should I do?
Oh, I thought it was good to apply the lowest - close to auto - setting for some of the voltages in the cell menu. I guessed it would help not overdo it with pumping the voltages up for no reason. I have not OCed now, but until then I would like to check if this minimum 1.10 (a notch above the Auto setting) is OK.
    Thank you in advance.

iraklisvel, I will post a screenshot from the mainboard's user manual, page 3-23:
As you can see, there are two procedures in case the system does not boot because of a failed overclock and I can promise you that you will save a lot of time if you clear CMOS instead of waiting for the the system to reboot a fourth time.
My suggestion is to save the last stable and your experimental settings in independent profiles under "USER SETTINGS" in BIOS.  These profiles are not erased when your clear CMOS and provide and easy and fast way to load a set of custom settings.
    To answer your other questions:
    Quote
    1. Undervolting. When I apply 1.10Vcore instea of 1.11, the mobo hangs. It just does not POST. We all know that such a minor decrease in vCore would hurt anyone so bad right?
I had no problems undervolting my E6600 as long as the clock speeds matched the voltage values.
    Quote
    2. Memory settings that are supposed to work 100% sure. Do you find it reasonable not being able to POST in ddr2 - 800 4-4-412 with 1066 modules? Because they actually do it on other mobos.
I had no problems to make a set of G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ run stably @4-4-4-12/2.1V on the P45 Platinum (@DDR2-800 of course).  Never tested with the Kingston HyperX KHX8500D2K2/2G memory I got though.
    Quote
    3. Multiplier Setting. Not all of them worked in the BIOS that came with the mobo. I guess this was a mistake which was not mine, right? It got (not fully) fixed when I updated the BIOS.
Overclocking my E6600 to 400 MHz FSB x9 was no problem with a small voltage bump from 1.250V to 1.330V (EIST & C1E enabled).  450 MHz FSB Clock speed x 9 was a problem, however it worked with the x8 multiplier.  @500 MHz FSB the x8 multiplier became a problem but I could stabilize the system using x7. Maybe 500 MHz x 8 is possible with a couple of voltage adjustions.  But testing these things takes time and I did not have that time yet.
The bottom line is:  The stability of a multiplier depends on a bunch of other settings as well.  I don't know under what conditions you have tested the different multipliers. To be able to comment on more precise conditions, more details are needed to get a picture of what you actually tried to accomplish with certain settings.

  • Why is FaceTime stuck "turning on" its preference?

FaceTime is stuck at the following state:
    Reproduceable steps:
    1. Open FaceTime
    2. Click switch labelled "Off" (to turn "preference" on)
    3. Wait...forever
What's going on? Why doesn't this action timeout if it fails and why is it failing?
( Boy, an error message would help here )
Why is the "FaceTime "preference" blocking my use of the app?
( Yes, I know what it does, as it says in the screen capture above. It's just incredibly annoying that I cannot use the app I PURCHASED before the preference is set. )
BTW, the spell checker in the Apple support text editor is not very good.
    Check the following test results:
...and lastly, why oh why did Apple remove "Save As..." and its usual shortcut (Apple-shift-S) from the Preview app, which now calls the same feature "Export"? Gawd, I love saving screen grabs as TIFF format (which, BTW, Apple support does not support) then saving the TIFF, closing Grab, opening the TIFF in Preview and saving it, er "Exporting" it, as JPEG — then, embedding it in this support question. NOT.
    Little help, please. Anyone. Beuller?

[ Apoogies for the initial attitude, Apple. I'm hoping someone distills our usabilitiy notes to improve products :]
    Thanks, miauhas and thatchtastic.
I deleted the one password keychain file I found under the Login keychain in the Keychain Access app. (You can find the app in the Applications/Utilities folder.)
I have no idea why it worked; however, the process was not so straight forward.
    Steps to reproduce:
(a.) Unlock the Login keychain in the Keychain Access app
(b.) Delete the file that is of "application password" kind and named something like "FaceTime: [email protected]"
(c.) Quit the Keychain Access app
    (d.) Open FaceTime
    (e.) Turn FaceTime "on"
(f.) Enter your Apple ID credentials
(g.) [ wait for FaceTime to "turn its preference on" ]
    > At this point, the app gets stuck "turning on"
    (h.) Quit FaceTime
    (i.) Open FaceTime
    > At this point, a new dialog in the right-hand panel appears (with video feed at left)
    > Step: Enter e-mail address to associate with FaceTime
    (j.) Enter e-mail address
(k.) [ app verifies address, which in this case is the same as my Apple ID ]
    (l.) FaceTime set-up process complete
On balance, there appears to be a bug hanging around, causing the app to essentially crash in certain circumstances. Apple developers, please investigate further — thanks!
    Cheers,

  • My phone was killed by your update. AGAIN! It is now inoperable and stuck on recovery mode. WTH?

My phone was killed by your update.  AGAIN!  Last time I had to deal with discourteous, uneducated, unhelpful, and downright rude customer service reps (who, by the way, seemed to ignore the fact that I had set up an appointment).  Once the issue was finally acknowledged, I had to erase all content in my phone.  I could have done that on my own.  This time, the update has made my phone completely inoperable, so I can't even call or be called by Apple support?!  This is absolutely unacceptable.  I can't just have my only phone cease to work every time you feel like killing it.
It's stuck in the "connect to iTunes" screen with an image of a USB cable pointing at an iTunes logo.
    Error message no. 14
I have tried all possible recommended solutions from all help sites.  I have removed all usb connections, except the iPhone.  I have updated iTunes and Windows 7 completely, and restarted my computer.  I have tried restoring it from another computer, which seemed to work, except for when I plugged it into my computer and asked it to load all of my software/media, it died again.

Yeah, I was a little upset when I wrote that, and I had copied and pasted it into this discussion board without really looking at who it was directed to.  It's upsetting.  And I absolutely refuse to go to the Apple store for help.  They are incredibly rude.  Besides I can't make an appontment without my phone. . .

  • Clean install of OSX Mountain Lion stuck on "5.5hrs."

I'm trying to clean install OS X Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro after having to erase my mac partition. I lefft the install to run over night and came back to barely making any progress stuck with 5.5 hours left.
I thought erasing the Mac partion that I assuemed to be corrupt would speed things up. But even in Recovery Mode, the Mac is incredibly slow.

You're using Startup Manager. Boot OS X Recovery instead.
From the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose "Reinstall Mac OS X".
"Clean install" is vague so reinstalling OS X may not accomplish what you seek, and it's not clear what your USB drive contains. More specific guidance can be provided if you explain what you intend to do.

  • Photoshop Bug: Sliders getting stuck to mouse after release (Mac OS)

When dragging various sliders in Photoshop CS5, very often these sliders get "stuck" and move with the mouse even though you have released the mouse. Say you are dragging a slider to set the brush opacity to 50%. When you have set it to 50%, you release the mouse and move it away from the slider, only to find that the opacity still increases or decreases as you move your mouse. You have to click again to fix this, but then of course you have to go back and do it again.
Below is a small illustration (I can't take a screenshot of my mouse) of an example of when this happens:
This happens to me around once every 5 times I use a slider, i.e. extremely often. As you can imagine, it's very annoying and frustrating.
I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet, and I never use Photoshop without it so I cannot confirm whether this bug happens with a mouse or just the tablet.
It doesn't just happen like on the above illustration, but also with any slider such as those in Adjustment Layers and Filters.
The bug does not happen when using tools on the canvas (thankfully). So the Brush tool, and every other tool, works fine and never gets "stuck".
I have the latest version of Photoshop CS5.
This is a bug that has always been in CS5 since the first version, and it has not been in previous versions of Photoshop.
Does anyone else have this issue? Anyone else with a Tablet?
I know there are large amounts of similar, extremely annoying bugs in CS5, but this one is just driving me crazy.
    Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro
OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.7 (but the problem has existed way before 10.6.7)
    Photoshop CS5 version 12.0.2

Chris—I'm sincerely sorry that you were called at home on a holiday weekend about my post.  Sincerely.  I'm sorry.  That shouldn't have happened, and I apologize for that.
I do ask that you also understand that I spent my entire weekend trouble-shooting this issue—which is now several months old—while waiting for an answer or at least a respectful and helpful response of some sort.  Here we are with another week down the tubes and still have yet to receive some sort of expression of an Adobe employee taking my case seriously.  I don't know if you—or anyone else—is investigating this.  As best I can tell, you are not—and I base that on the series of confusing (and in some cases, patently false) assertions that you made regarding the facts of this matter—including confidently promoting the notion that this is not a problem with Photoshop CS5 (which it clearly is), and the notion that I hadn't done anything to narrow down the list of possible causes—which I clearly have.  If you disagree, as you claim to, with either of those statements—then the very least you (or someone at Adobe) can do is to take ten minutes out of your schedule to draft a proper, logical and honest assesment of why you have come to those conclusions.  I don't think that's asking too much at all.  In fact, it's very disappointing that I've had to expend as much effort as I have to deal with this issue—and I still don't have an official, "right on, we're working on it," from you guys.
If you want to make a case that it was abusive of me to telling you that Layer Styles was likely the cause of this issue—go right ahead.  I admit that my entire statement was a bit "hot," but you have yet to even acknowledge the validity of my concern—much less the tremendous effort I've undertaken at my own personal expense (and at your/Adobe's benefit) to contribute to the resolution of this problem... or the real-world dollars and opportunity cost to my creative reputation.  Do you have many other users who go to these lengths when identifying bugs?  I doubt it.  As I've told you in another thread—if you've heard from me, it's only after I've already expended significant effort trying to solve the problem on my own.  I don't whine about stuff and ask other people to fix it, if I can fix it myself.  But I can't.  I'm not a programmer, and I don't know how to run any diagnostics on my own—although trust me—I've tried.  I've tried Xcode, and learning Applescript to see if I could craft my own workaround or identify the issue with even greater clarity.  But I don't know either of those technologies, and it's not work that I should be doing anyway.  There is a reason that a CS5 Design Master license costs upwards of $2,500, right?  I've gotten much more attentive and respectful response from free apps than I've gotten from Adobe over this issue.  What is that license for, if not for respectful customer service?
I have never received a paycheck from Adobe, Chris.  I receive (small) paychecks when I get my work done—which I have not been able to do for over a week now... and this is not the first time that has happened as a result of this bug.  And the week before this reappeared, I spent a significant amount of time testing out CS6 and taking notes to share with you and your development team—for no other reason that that I know this program inside and out (or at least large portions of it), and want to contribute to it in any way I can.  So yeah... I was angry.  Truthfully—I still am.  My paycheck isn't even the reason I do what I do.  I do what I do because it fulfills me on an emotional and spiritual level—which I stated in my very first post back in April.  Suffice to say—I feel spiritually and emotionally drained right now.  I'm just so incredibly exhausted, having spent the last couple hours nearly driven to tears by the combination of a fulll week of never-ending frustration, the loss of an important client and my favorite project, and what seems to be a total disregard for my case by you and whomever else from Adobe has read these posts without taking action to begin bringing about resolution.
Again—if you have a case to make, then make it.  Thus far, you've said a few things which made it seem like either a) you haven't even read the top-line details of my detailed reports, or b) that you are determined to squash me—not the bug.  I've explained why I've come to those conclusions very clearly.  Your assertion that I hadn't narrowed anything down is so demonstrably false that I consider that to be an abusive statement.  Your mention of Wacom drivers and third-party-related possibilities right after I'd spent about an hour composing a post (following up on a couple of days worth of volunteer trouble-shooting) detailing to the nth degree why it absolutely could not be either one of those things is totally perplexing, to the point where it make so little sense that someone of your presumed intelligence (i.e. a big-shot developer for one of the worlds most well-known applications) could actually respond that way after reading any part of what I'd just wrote.  It makes no sense.  Either you didn't read it, or you did read it, and you had a reason for making a statement that you knew wasn't in line with the facts of the matter.  I don't know which one it is, but it's one of those things, unless I'm totally missing something.
You have offered a few terse responses to my very detailed reports—and in the few short sentences that you've wrote, you've made many statements that have no effect on pushing the issue forward or getting it closer to resolution.  I don't want it to be a personal issue—but I don't feel like I made it personal until you did.  Yes, my statments were direct and pointed—but at least they've been transparent, articulate and well-explained.  You continue to speak about things like my continued accusations, your weekend, the TOS of the forum, and all sort of things that only exacerbate an already-painful, already-costly issue.  I've told you that I am determined to get resolution on this issue—and I am serious.  I will not accept blanket dismissals, and I will not be intimidated into backing down from my demand for a resolution.  I have helped you get as far as I can get on my own, and I am willing to continue to help in any way I can.
I quit a very high-paying job 4 years ago to pursue a career as a designer.  I make next to nothing now, but I feel fullfilled because of the creative process.  This bug has prevented me from all fulfillment.  It has strained my personal and professional relationships, and has taken a heavy emotional toll on me.  Please step up and make an effort to get it resolved—or at least assign someone else to solve it.  I can provide whatever you need from my end—and again, I'm sorry for your phone call this weekend.

  • Time machine incredibly slow on brand new macbook pro

    Hello everyone,
I bought a new Macbook pro 8Gb Ram dual core 2.8 GHz in late February of this year. Initially, the Time-machine back-ups worked very well and fast but on April 19 (shortly after my last back up), the hard drive of the computer died. I had it changed by Apple Care (for free given the warranty), but when the computer came back, it still could not boot, being always stuck on the welcome screen. The guys at the store made a complete reinstall of Mac OS 10.7 on the new hard drive and since then everything works fine... except that now (on Lion 10.7.4) whenever I try to do a back-up with the time machine, the progression is incredibly slow. It typically progresses Kb per Kb when I have about 86Gb to back-up....
I have check with disk utility that my time-machine external hard drive is fine. Furthermore, this HD is also used as a time machine for other macs and works very well in these cases. Finally, it still has more than 500Gb available on it.
I would like to know what's going on with my macbook pro ? Why is the time machine basically not working and what can I do to change that ? I am a little worried because, as you know, having back ups is essential and right now I simply cannot do a back up my brand new computer.

Well I started this backup two hours ago and I indeed observe the backup to progress by jumps. But overall it is really slow, right now it backed up 2Gb out of 88Gb.
Yes, after a failed backup, it may appear to be very slow.  Let it run.
Also see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the green box.
I just hope the total time will not just be proportional because I don't have 86h available to do the back up.
You must (or it's already spent some time deleting old backlups).  Otherwise, it would have failed.  Besides, the message you posted earlier said there was 508 GB available.
See what the messages say; all that will be documented.

  • I seem to be "stuck" downloading QuickTime. I'm still less than 1/10 on "Configuring Instillation" on my MacBookPro.

I've repeatedly tried to download QuickTIme on my MacBook Pro.  It seems to be stuck on "Configuring Instillation".....showing less than 1/10 on the status bar.  I don't know what to do.  I'm incredibly challenged when it comes to these things.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Paul cb.  I get the same error message (9), which relates to an apparent dropping of the USB connection.  I have now tried 3 different usb cables on 2 different mac's, same result.
Reading as much as I can understand, there appears to be a dependance on an SHSH signature file. I have never Jailbroken any of my apple hardware, but there is much information that can be gleaned from the associated writings.
I am not a genius my any means, but it appears as though (iMhO) that somehow the files (or some of them) on the iPad have become corrupted and the all important SHSH file is not there. This causes iTunes to have no reference point for restoring the iPad.  Also, it is not possible to force a new firmware (Option click restore in itunes) without an SHSH file, this results in an error that says that the iPad is not eligible for this version ...  or something like that.
MY problem is that in Dubai we do not have an Apple Genius bar and that you guys and gals are the closest I will get to an Apple Genius.  The iPad was purchased for me in the States when my daughter was visting there so, I am pretty much sitting on a brick right now ...  (my wife has annexed my iPad 2 until I can fix her iPad 1 ....  sighs).
Unless there are any other tactics that you guys can suggest (without Jailbreaking) then I think I may be at the end of the road ..
Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
    Best Regards
    Richard

  • Pro cc gets stuck and stops responding constantly

For some reason my Premiere Pro CC will constantly get stuck performing a task, often incredibly simple ones, never complete it or even start it and then when I right click on it it says it's stopped responding and I have to close program and often restart teh computer and then whatever the task was works perfectly.  This happens when adding a new file to the mediaborwser or when rendering something simple very very often.  any thoughts?

  • Stuck in the snow :-(

So I've been traveling for the last 10 days... spent New Year's with friends in Atlanta, then flew to Miami for my sister's wedding which was on Friday. Started the drive back up to my home in Tennessee yesterday morning, and decided to spend the night with my friends in Atlanta...
Bad decision. We've got 6+ inches of snow here (Atlanta airport is COMPLETELY shut down through noon tomorrow), 12+ inches at my home in Tennessee, and no word of anything in the way of snow plows or road clearing. In fact, Tennessee Emergency Management has apparently released a statement saying that if you slide off the road, or get in a wreck, and aren't injured, you're on your own! Atlanta has ice on the way, with falling temps, so it may be several days before we can get out. I'd go for it, but I've got my wife with me, who's 8 months pregnant and I don't want to risk getting stuck in the snow with her.
The most disappointing thing about all this to me is that my brand new GY-HM700U, which I've not gotten to play with yet, is sitting in my office back in Tennessee and not with me. :-(
We'll see what happens, but at this point I may be here in Atlanta at least into Wednesday! The sad thing is that this same amount of snow up north wouldn't even faze anyone--it's folks in the south who don't know what to do with it that are going nuts!

Dave, hows it going ???  Are things back to normal ??
Normal? Nope... I've never seen anything like this before... I am back in Dayton, where I live, but things aren't exactly "normal" here...
The city school almost NEVER takes a snow day, and yet they've now racked up four in a row... the county schools closed on Monday and won't reopen until Tuesday of next week!
The college where I work is open again, but not all the students have made it back to campus and even a number of the faculty are still snowed in at their homes and can't get here to work.
Good news for me, is that I live on Market St in Dayton, which is a state road, and so is kept plowed and I'm able to get out. My wife probably wishes I couldn't get out, so that I could stay home from work, but I'm here at work now, finally...
And the good part about being at work is that I get to play with my new camera!!!
Oh, the joys of a good camera! I pulled it out of the bag this morning, popped on the new, fully charged batteries, set my back focus, and started having fun. Here's a rundown of what I've learned so far:
The form-factor is wonderful--I LOVE the fact that this camera is shoulder mount... SO much easier to hold. That said, I noticed when I pulled some footage into my editing rig that it's going to take some adjustment to get my image level all the time! Nice thing is, it's easy to twirl open my rotate adjustment in the motion control panel, and correct by a couple degrees and then zoom my image in to 105-107% to compensate for the rotation. I just need to get better at keeping the camera level when I'm using the viewfinder.
The camera is a dream when mounted on a good set of sticks. The balance is amazing, and its really easy to do smooth pans and tilts with it. I suppose that's primarily due to the sticks and the head I'm using, but the camera does work well on it... the LCD screen is INCREDIBLY clear and sharp, and though I didn't really need it, the focus assist was really nice, too
One thing that disappointed me a bit is what I think is referred to as the "breathing" of the lens (correct me if I'm using the wrong term) when I adjust focus with the lens zoomed tight. You'll see it in one clip in my test video which I'll link below, but as I pulled my focus to bring one blurred building into focus, you could see it actually adjusted the zoom as well, which I didn't really like. I don't know if that's a function of these pro lenses, or if I'm doing something wrong, but if anyone has insight into it, I'd appreciate some pointers...
Speaking of focus, this thing has a great DoF... the aperture is not variable, so you can do a lot more with your depth of field by pulling physically away from your subject and then zooming in tight and setting focus.
The Auto White Balance button I found to work ok, but not great... I pulled it out, focused it at a pile of snow that was in the shade (so it wouldn't be blown out) and hit the AWB button, and then just started shooting. In post I found that I had to use the three-way color corrector to pull both the highlights and the midtones a little bit blue--everything looked just a little yellow, and we all know to avoid the yellow snow!
One thing I did find the hard way with this, is that with the focus assist turned on, you really need to have zebras enabled as well... focus assist makes the image black and white but puts a blue edge around that which is in focus... the problem with black and white is that its a lot harder to tell what your exposure is like. Being out in the snow with a sun that kept going in and out of the clouds, I ended up with a bunch of shots that were so overexposed they were unusable. I think next time I'll not rely on the focus assist as much (even the viewfinder is really sharp!) and I'll turn my zebras on around 90%.
Editing is a breeze with this stuff in CS5... I pulled the card from the camera, dropped it in my card reader, copied the BPAV folder to my media disk, opened the media browser in PPro, browsed to the folder, and it instantly switched to the XDCAM-EX format and showed me all my clips. It was simple to import them to the clip viewer, select what I wanted, and then drag it to my bin.
On my i7-920 system with 12GB of Ram, a 4TB RAID-0 Media disk and a single Projects disk with a separate disk for OS/Programs, I could edit this stuff with my playback window at full resolution with no stutters at all... that's WAY better than I could do with the AVCHD from my cheapo C-Camera, and certainly better than I can do with the RED footage I was playing with last month. Even with levels and the 3-Way CC applied to most clips, the 1:20 segment linked below exported in a little less than 3 minutes, which I feel is fantastic for this footage, which is 1920x1080 at 60i.
So there's my writeup on what I've observed so far...
Here's the footage I shot today.
