Incremental field in stored procedures

Hi All,
I have a requirement in which there is one incremental field based on city.
Based on city the SR No needs to be incremented. We have achieved this by using Rank function and its working fine.
Now the problem is if we run this procedure for the next time the SR No to be incremented.
For Eg: If we run the procedure for the 1’st following is the output.
SR No City
1 Chennai
1 Chennai
2 Mumbai
3 Hyderabad
3 Hyderabad
If we run the procedure for 2’nd time the output should be as given below.
SR No City
4 Chennai
4 Chennai
4 Chennai
5 Hyderabad
6 Yamuna nagar
6 Yamuna nagar
If we run the procedure for the next time the SR No should start from 7.
Please help

we need to implement this with in the same procedure with out sequence.Oracle sequence or no Oracle sequence is a technical decision. Has absolutely nothing to do with the requirement specification - which is what is being discussed.
It is not depends on the user ,it depends on the procedure.I did not ask about the user. I asked about session state - whether the increment needs to persist across sessions. Or whether each session will have its own local increment that will cease to exist at the end of the session.
Remember that Oracle is a multi-processing environment. There can be a 100 sessions all executing the very same procedure. What increment do these sessions see? The same sequence? Or does each have its own? (this is a basic concept in programming that deals with "+thread safety+" on multi-process/multi-thread systems)
When the database instance is shutdown, does the existing increment need to persist and be re-used when the database start again?
And who is going to use this sequence? There must be a purpose for this sequence - the "+WHY?+". What is this requirement that the increment/sequence need to address?
This is a critical piece of information as it dictates HOW the sequence will be used by processes that want to interrogate it. This directly impacts the design and technical implementation of the sequence.
each time it is running the SRNO should be increment based on previous SRNO.So..? Is this across sessions, or localised in each session? And what happens when one session wants to see the SRNO of another session? Is this a requirement..?
In other words, you are not answering anything with that statement. The very same questions I've raised in the previous paragraph, apply.
DEFINE THE PROBLEM! Without know WHAT the problem is, we cannot suggest HOW it must be technically addressed. This is a fundamental software engineering principle that you need to grasp.

  • Executing a report with stored procedure causes error

    Hello,
    I've got a .NET application where a report gets generated from an .rpt template using Crystal Reports. A template has been created using the fields from stored procedure. While creating the template, I've been working with my DEV environment DB server, and with that server the .rpt has been saved. Within the Designer, I can preview the report, all working fine.
    Using the template with my application, if I set in the code for crystal connection to use the same DB server as has been saved with the .rpt, the report runs and I do get the result in my application as expected. But if I move my code to other environment, using another DB server (but not changing anything in the .rpt), while running the report in the application I get the following error:

    I hope someone can help me out with thi.

  • Update table column with same auto-increment value, via T-SQL stored procedure

    Good Evening to every one,
    I have a table 'Contracts' as we can see in the picture below (I exported my data on An Excel Spreadsheet). Table's primary key is 'ID' column.
    I am trying to create a stored procedure (i.e. updContractNum), through which I am going to update the 'Contract_Num' column, in every row where the values on Property_Code, Customer, Cust_Category and Amnt ARE EQUAL, as we can see in the schema above.
    The value of Contract_Num is a combination of varchar and auto_increment (integer). For example, the next value on 'Contract number' column will be 'CN0005' for the combination of 11032-14503-02-1450,00
    I' m trying to use CURSORS for this update but I am new in using cursors and I am stuck in whole process. I atttach my code below:
    CREATE PROCEDURE updContractNum
    AS
    --declare the variables
    DECLARE @CONTRACT_NUM VARCHAR(10); -- Contract Number. The value that will be updated on the table.
    DECLARE @CONTRACT INTEGER; -- Contract number, the auto increment section on contract number
    DECLARE @CONTR_ROW VARCHAR(200); -- Contract row. The row elements that will be using on cursor
    DECLARE CONTRACT_CURSOR CURSOR FOR -- Get the necessary fields from table
    SELECT PROPERTY_CODE, CUSTOMER, CUST_CATEGORY, AMNT
    FROM CONTRACTS;
    OPEN CONTRACT_CURSOR -- open a cursor
    FETCH NEXT FROM CONTRACT_CURSOR INTO @CONTR_ROW
    WHILE @@FETCH_STATUS = 0 -- execute the update, for every row of the tabl
    BEGIN
    --update Contract_Num, using the format coding : contract_number = 'CN' + 0001
    UPDATE CONTRACTS
    SET CONTRACT_NUM = 'CN'+@CONTRACT_NUM+1
    END
    CLOSE CONTRACT_CURSOR
    Thank you in advance!

    You dont need cursor
    You can simply use an update statement like this
    UPDATE t
    SET Contract_Num = 'CN' + RIGHT('00000' + CAST(Rnk AS varchar(5)),5)
    FROM
    SELECT Contract_Num,
    DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Property_Code,Customer,Cust_category,Amnt) AS Rnk
    FROM table
    )t

  • How do I modify a report to show new fields in a stored procedure?

    The server uses Crystal Reports Embedded Server 2008 SP3 (running on Windows Server 2008 R2 / IIS 7.5), and I am using Crystal Reports Developer 2008 SP3 on my PC.
    Hello,
    I am a MSSQL database administrator with little experience with Crystal Reports.  At my job, we have a need to add a couple of fields to a report.  The report comes with an enterprise procurement web-based application and displays the details of a given purchase order.  They want me to add the supplieru2019s address below the supplieru2019s name on the report.  I was hoping there might be a fairly straight-forward, not overly complicated answer to my question.
    The report works with a stored procedure (OrderForm1) which creates a temp table called #ReportParameters.  It then executes another stored procedure (GetReportParameters), in which it uses 'sp_xml_preparedocument' and eventually 'sp_xml_removedocument'.  It then executes a stored procedure called  (OrderForm1Main) which contains the select statement that brings in the bulk of the fields and joining the pertinent tables.  I made a backup copy of OrderForm1Main and modified the original, to include the supplier address fields.
    Don't know if I'm on the right track, but hereu2019s what I tried so far:
    When I open the OrderForm1.rpt in Crystal Designer, I have found that I can go to Database > Set Datasource Location, create a connection (OLE DB (ADO)) to the database, highlight the name of the stored procedure under u2018Current Data Sourceu2019, then find the same stored procedure in the database in the section u2018Replace withu2019:
    http://i.imgur.com/KXBuf.png
    When I clicked the u2018Updateu2019 button, a u2018Enter Valuesu2019 for parameters window pops up:
    http://i.imgur.com/5uQ9V.png
    Iu2019m confused as to what to do at this part.  Whether I click u2018OKu2019 or u2018Cancelu2019, it then adds my database connection with stored procedure to the list in the u2018Current Data Sourceu2019 section:
    http://i.imgur.com/aD4KH.png
    After completing this data source change, in the Field Explorer under Database Fields > OrderForm1, it then includes the new fields I added to the stored procedure.  However, when dragging the new supplier address fields to the report layout, saving the report in this state, and trying to run it in the web application, the report window displays the message u2018Missing parameter valuesu2019 instead of the report:
    http://i.imgur.com/gz8S3.png
    In Field Explorer > Database Fields > Parameters, Iu2019m seeing a list of parameters that arenu2019t the exact ones in the stored procedure, which leads me to believe, they are somehow defined in the report itself.  Also, under u2018Parameter Fieldsu2019 in the Fields Explorer there is the @fParameters listing with a question mark icon, that appeared since the data source change:
    http://i.imgur.com/llkrk.png
    There does not seem to be an equivalent set of parameters in the database, as there were defined in the report.  I imagine that the actual parameter values come from the data held in the currently displayed purchase order (from which you can push a button 'Print PO' that will display the report in question).  I have read that when you change a data source in Crystal, you have to complete the task of resetting, or adding back in the parameters.  That would be easy if they were in the database somewhere.  Whenever I attempt to look at the properties of the u2018ReportInformationu2019 in u2018Set Datasource Locationu2019, or simply try Database > 'Verify Database' to refresh the datasource, an u2018ADO.NET (XML) windows pops up with a file path in it, something to the effect of:
    MyLoanerLaptop\ebo bk\orderform1.xml:
    http://i.imgur.com/SEVOE.png
    I did a search on the entire server for the file OrderForm1.XML and could not find it anywhere.  So Iu2019m thinking that the software companyu2019s development team used that file originally, to create the report (did they use a dataset to do this, or is the temporary XML file created during the process actually the schema here?).  I think Iu2019m basically trying to change the data source in the report, to an updated version of the original stored procedure referenced, while still somehow leaving the parameters list in the report alone and have them still work?
    Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.  I realize that this type of work most likely is routine stuff that can be learned by taking the time to do so.  My team is only interested in allowing me a certain amount of time and resources to delve into Crystal and we do not have a Crystal dev team.  So, hopefully you understand my dilemma here.
    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
    CRSE is an OEM Product and for use with a custom application they have written. Unfortunately we don't their reports or how they are connecting, it would appear they were originally built off a SQL and then set to a Dataset in the app or they could be adding the data source at runtime. Lots of variations and without access to the source code to see what they are doing not much we can help you with.
    You need to contact the OEM Partner for help in resolving this and find out what you can and need to do to update your SP and work with their canned reports,
    Thank you

  • Crystal Report not showing fields when connected to a stored procedure

    I have a Stored Procedure that returns results when run in SQL Server, but when I add this to a Crystal Report it doesn't show any fields in the Field Explorer. But if I try any other SP, it works fine and I can see its fields.
    As you can see in the picture below, I am unable to expand the fields in the report while creating the report using standard report procedure too.
    I tried different ways, but nothing worked for me here. Please help me here.
    (FYI, I am using Crystal Reports 2008, SQL Server 2008R2)

    Hi Jamie,
    I just found out the reason for this issue.
    I wrote the stored procedure using the fields in the Datamart but the fields in the datamart in backend are connected to a different database which doesn't have SQL Server Authentication (for the Credentials) and that's the reason I was getting this issue.
    Once my BI team granted the permission, for that fields connecting to the backend database, I was able to see all fields in the Crystal Report.

  • How do I insert multiple values into different fields in a stored procedure

    I am writing a Stored Procedure where I select data from various queries, insert the results into a variable and then I insert the variables into final target table. This works fine when the queries return only one row. However I have some queries that return multiple rows and I am trying to insert them into different fields in the target table. My query is like
    SELECT DESCRIPTION, SUM(AMOUNT)
    INTO v_description, v_amount
    FROM SOURCE_TABLE
    GROUP BY DESCRIPTION;
    This returns values like
    Value A , 100
    Value B, 200
    Value C, 300
    The Target Table has fields for each of the above types e.g.
    VALUE_A, VALUE_B, VALUE_C
    I am inserting the data from a query like
    INSERT INTO TARGET_TABLE (VALUE_A, VALUE_B, VALUE_C)
    VALUES (...)
    How do I split out the values returned by the first query to insert into the Insert Statement? Or do I need to split the data in the statement that inserts into the variables?
    Thanks

    Perhaps something like this could be done in combination with the pivot queries above, although it seems cumbersome.

  • Displaying data from stored procedure into textbox fields based on user input.

    I have a stored procedure that is selecting data from a table called "Vendor" in my database.  The data that is being returned are vendor names, vendor addresses, vendor Id's, etc...In my stored proc, I have one parameter that allows
    the user to enter a vendor name and then return all the data for that specific vendor.  The report that I'm building is going to look like a basic form with a bunch of textboxes on the screen labeled Vendor Address, Vendor Id, Vendor City, Vendor State,
    etc...In the report I'm trying to build, the user will enter in a vendor name and then it will return all of the vendor's data based on what the user searches for.  However, the report will only return ONE vendor's data at a time.
    The problem is that some of the data in the database has very similiar vendor names, but different vendor addresses, vendor Id's, etc...In some instances the vendor name is actually
    exactly the same, but the vendor address, vendor city, vendor Id, is all different.  So what I did was added another parameter in my report that shows a drop down list of vendor names based on the wildcard search the user just did and
    allows the user to select the exact vendor name that he/she is looking for based on what they searched.  The problem I'm having is that I don't know what expression I need to put in each one of my textboxes to retrieve the correct data from
    the vendor table that the user selects from the drop down list.  So what I want to do is return the exact data from the vendor table based on the selection that the user makes from that drop down list.  It's like I somehow have to compare the
    drop down list parameter directly to the dataset but I don't know what expression needs to go in the textbox.  I've tried...=First(Fields!VendorName.Value, "DataSet1").EqualsParameters!DropDownList.Value(0) but I keep getting an error message.
    --Here is an example of the kind of thing the user might search for...when the user searches the word "sprint" it returns three different vendor names to the drop down list.
    1. sprint
    2. sprint
    3. sprint co
    Each one of those three vendor names has a different vendor address, vendor city, vendor ID, etc...but the vendor names are extremely similar and in some cases
    exactly the same. In my report now I can't get the textboxes to return the correct data based on what the user selects.  Any advice at all is greatly appreciated.
    P.S. I didn't even know what SQL Server was a month ago and had zero knowledge of SSRS at all.  I've learned a lot recently, but if you could explain a solution in the easiest way possible I would appreciate it. Thanks!

    Hi Jrcowles,
    If I understand you correctly, you wnat to list all the Vendor Name which like the user typed Vendor Name on a drop-down list, right? If in this case, we can use a cascading parameters to achieve your requirement. I have tested it on my local environment,
    the steps below are for you reference.
    Create an other stored procedure using the query below.
    CREATE PROCEDURE GetVendorName
    @VendorName NVARCHAR(50)
    AS BEGIN
    exec( 'SELECT * FROM Vendor WHERE VendorName LIKE ''%'+@VendorName+'%''')
    END
    Create another dataset DataSet2 and using the new created procedure.
    Create another parameter VendorName2 and check "Allow Multiple Values" for this parameter.

  • Returned fields are not showing up under stored procedure

    First I would like to say I haven't used crystal reports before.
    I created a crystal report in VS2008 and under Database fields I pointed to my stored procedure. The parameter fields show up but there are no return fields under the stored procedure. I tested the SP in SQL Management Studio and it works correctly and returns the correct fields. When selecting the SP I tried unselecting "Set to Null Value" for each of the parameters and entered values I knew would return fields and the fields show up under the SP but they are filled with the data from the parameters I used. Which I would expect. If I go back to using null, the fields disappear.
    I also had this problem when I updated another Report after adding a new field to be returned from a SP. I fiddled around with it and got it working but not sure how or why it saw the fields when I got it working.
    And today I updated a stored procedure to use a string parameter and not an integer parameter. After I updated the SP in VS2008 using the field explorer, the return fields disappear. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi Don,
    Thanks for the reply. I verified the database multiple times before posting and just verified it again. No luck. Also the SP has only one select.
    I found some crystal report cds with 8.5 (the newest I could find), I installed it and tried to use the SP and it gave me the following error:
    "There are no return fields in the file". VS2008 does not give this error.
    I tried using crystal reports with all the SPs I altered and I get the same error. Most of the changes to the SPs are in the where cause (Changing from field = @field to field IN (@fields) and changing a parameter from an int to a string. Also as a side note, when setting up the data source I am choosing to use nulls. Is this correct? The SPs were all written using SQL string format if that makes any difference.
    UPDATE: I tried using discree values that I knew would return values and the return fields show up. They are populated with the expected values but if I use these values all my reports will be the same. As I would expect. So why doesn't it work for NULL values? Maybe my thinking is wrong here but isn't null values used so you can dynamically select values for the parameters at runtime?

  • How can L identify what are the not null fields of a table in a stored procedure ?

    How can L identify what are the not null fields of a table in a stored procedure ?

    You could query the data dictionary:
    SELECT column_name
    FROM all_tab_columns
    WHERE owner = '...'
    AND table_name = '...'
    AND nullable = 'N'

  • Oracle stored procedure is called OK but no values in output fields.

    I have a working connection to my Oracle database using JDBC system.
    I can browse all my Stored Procedures.
    I can add them to my iview without errors.
    I can see all expected in and out fields.
    I can trigger the Stored Procedure through the input port. The procedure is called and does all it is expected to do - BUT:
    The output field in the form connected to the output port of the procedure stays as empty as when it was created. No values are received by Visual Composer.
    Also when testing the procedure, no values are displayed. In fact no output fields are displayed at all in the test panel.
    (I know about the difference between bi_jdbc and jdbc systems - this issue is not related to this - although maybe the driver (ojdbc14.jar / oracle thin) could be the sinner????)
    Helpful hints will be promtly rewarded.
    Henning

    Unfortunately no honors to me this time, Govindu. I quick customer message to SAP solved this. The bigger issue was to actually upgrade from SPS 9 to 14.
    Even bigger is the ability to now produce database driven applications using program units in my Oracle database. Visual Composer rules!

  • Inserting to a clob field using cx_Oracle via a stored procedure

    Hello,
    Does anyone have experience using cx_Oracle to call a stored procedure which inserts to a clob field? I have found examples of doing this via straight SQL but I was hoping it was possible to do this via a stored procedure call. Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Jason

    And cursor.callproc('insert_clob_proc', (clob,))
    doesn't work for you?
    PrzemekYes - I should have been more clear in my original post. The callproc function works until we have a value which is over 32K. At values over 32K, we get an error message "ORA-01460: unimplemented or unreasonable conversion requested". I believe this is because we are sending the value as a string and so we would need to figure out how to send as a CLOB in cx_Oracle? Here is some code to use to test if interested...
    Oracle (Oracle Database 10g Release 10.1.0.4.0 - Production):
    CREATE TABLE clob_test (CLOB_FIELD CLOB);
    CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE ins_clob_test (v_clob_field IN CLOB)
    AS
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO clob_test (clob_field) VALUES (v_clob_field);
    END ins_clob_test;
    Python (2.5):
    conn = cx_Oracle.connect(xhash['oraclelogin'])
    cursor = conn.cursor()
    clob_var = 'Some test data' * 10000
    cursor.callproc('ins_clob_test',(clob_var,))
    conn.commit()
    cursor.close()
    conn.close()
    I should also mention that I am the Oracle developer and not the Python programmer - my knowledge of Python is very limited. I would like the Python programmers to use the procedures (packages) I have created to do their inserts but this situation has caused them to put the SQL directly in their code.
    Thanks again for any assistance you can provide.

  • Stored procedure copying docnum to remark field

    Hi Experts,
    Is there somebody who can help me with an stored procedure which copies the docnum of an AR Invoice to the remarks field.
    I need this solution because when we export an clieop file for banktransaction it gives the remark field of the ar invoice instead of the docnum. I spoke to somebody at SAP and he suggested to make an SP which copies the docnum to the remark field.
    It is not possible right now in SBO 2007A to modify the clieop by ourself. Maybe in 8.8 release
    Can somebody help me?
    THX
    Mark

    HI
    You don't need a store procedure for that .You need is formatted search on remarks field :
    Select $[OINV.DOCNUM]
    Auto refresh when cardcode changes
    Your problem will be solved
    Hope this helps

  • What is better to use a calculation field or to use stored procedure

    Dear All
    i want to know what is better to use a calculation field on oracle forms , or to do the calculation using a stored procedure at the data base level and fetch the results to the fields on the form
    Best Regards

    Hello Mohannad
    the stored procedure approach might be more readable and maintainable when the calculation gets complicated.
    And it might be easier to reuse when it's needed in another part of your application.
