Incremential Backup & renaming/moving files
Hi!
I guess usually, when an incremental backup is done, a moved or renamed file will be treated exactly as two different files - one that has been deleted somewhere, and a new one somewhere else, resulting in an "additional copy" of the file and the loss of the traffic & disk-space?
If so: Is there a solution, that actually just links the moved files trough different backup stages instead instead of initiating another "transfer/copy" and keeping different copies of the same file? Or something like that?
Or in general: Which backup solution might be a good one to get into, if moving/renaming big files is common? What man-pages will I most likely want to read and what words to google to be able to make the right "decision"?
Thanks!
Mmmh... something like...
1) make list of "deleted on source" and "new on source" files just like I guess rsync etc. do too at some point
1a) optionally drop files with filesize smaller than X from list
2) look if a distinct "new" (source) file has same file-size as a "deleted" (old backup) one / match up
3) compare md5 for files that match (again source <=> old backup)
4) link finds from old backup to new increment backup instead of copying from source
Am I missing something? Maybe I just can't wrap my brain around that one to see the real problem...

Moving files causes time machine to backup
Why does moving a file or files necessitate TM backing them up again? Is it not a bit more intelligent than that? After doing a bit of house keeping TM decides to do a huge backup just because I have moved some files, ones which are already backed up, is this just the way it is or is there more to it?
cheers...robWell, actually they are in a sense. The directory entries are being rewritten although the data itself are not moved. But then when the backup utility runs and scans the drive it no longer finds those moved files. It will then delete them from the backup. When it finds them in their new location it copies them from the source location to the new destination location (making any new folders if required.)
Very few backup utilities (and TM is not one of them) have implemented a sort of fast scan to reduce the scan time required for a standard backup. The implementation requires that the user not change the source or destination devices because the backup utility only scans the source for changes then writes those changes to the destination. This method substantially reduces the time for a backup especially if you backup on, say, a daily basis. The only ones I have found are Synk and Synchronize! Pro X. Now, Retrospect is different in that it creates an index file when doing a backup. Subsequent backups are then quicker because it only has to compare the source to the index, and searching the index is very fast compare to scanning a volume. But Retrospect is a pretty heavyweight backup program and can be a bit difficult to master. -
what has gone wrong? whilst moving originals (to make them referanced files) to external hard drive, drobo 5s, it has renamed my files to my latest import name. what do I do?
The drop-down settings in the Relocate Originals dialog remain unchanged from one use to the next (they are sticky). My guess is that you left the "Name Format" dropdown in the last (unwanted) position -- one you had set when you relocated Originals and wanted them renamed using the file naming convention you use when importing.
The best you can do is to rename the mis-named files. You cannot undo the renaming that has been done.
This is a design flaw (imho it falls short of a bug). You should let Apple's Aperture team know that the behavior your got was different from what you expected, and was not reversible. Use "Aperture➞Provide Aperture Feedback". -
Moving and renaming image files
I want to move & rename image files to folders on the hard drive by dragging and dropping them into my application. I read about the problem with renameTo() method with windows. Is this possible to do in java? I heard about a method in which you read,write and delete the old file? How do I go about making this happen?
Well, what happens if you create the folder C:/Test/testfile1.txt ?
Or alternatively remove the part that says "testfile1.txt" from the directory path in your program.
Or alternatively call dir.mkdirs() before trying to rename.
What I am getting at is that when you create a file with the constructornew File(dir,newdest.getName())the parameter dir is treated as a directory no matter what its name is. If its name is "C:/Test/testfile1.txt," the name of the new file will be "C:/Test/testfile1.txt/name_of_newdest"where name_of_newdest is the name of the "newdest" file. This might not be what you wanted -
Defining event handlers for renaming, moving, copying and deleting of files.
Hi every one.
I had created a tool for InDesign CS6 written using Javascript to manipulate portions of text in nested way by marking them with small non-printing small anchored text frames contains sequenced numbers and storing these portions as snippets in a spicific folder beside the InDesign documents.
This tool is open source and free of charge, the only this that I want from you (after downloading) as a user to feedback and as a developer to improve it and join me.
sourceforge.net/projects/livesnippets
My question is not about this but I want to trace when the user rename, move, copy or delete a file of these snippets or any container folder and interact according to that by reserving the links between snippet files and their instances which interspersed in InDesign documents.
Thanks.Here is an example of using Bridge events… What this scrript will do if you add it to Bridge scripts… is set *all* indesign snippets in the folders you browse to… to be locked/readonly… This means that users will get an extra dialog if they want to delete the file… Finder or Bridge… You can't just rename the file Finder or Bridge… and Bridge's Batch Rename will only function if the user makes copies to new location… You could set this property using the File Object with indesign…
#target bridge
onDocLoaded = function( event ) {
if ( event.object instanceof Document && event.type == 'loaded' ) {
lockIDSnippets();
return { handled: true };
function lockIDSnippets() {
var i, count, doc, thum;
doc = app.document;
count = doc.visibleThumbnailsLength;
for ( var i = 0; i < count; i++ ) {
thum = doc.visibleThumbnails[i];
if ( /\.idms/.test( thum.spec.name ) ) {
thum.spec.readonly = true;
// Register event handler
app.eventHandlers.push( { handler: onDocLoaded } ); -
What happens if you Time-Machine backup an encrypted file-vault HD?
This is related to my previous post - but deserves special mention for those people who are using time-vault AND Time-Machine.
My question is this: If the backup of my Hard-drive is encrypted, and I then reinstall from backup, what will this situation likely produce?
This is what I have done. I also Archived and installed my Mac prior to installing from my Time-Machine backup.
I now have an error message that displays the following message at the login screen:
"Unable to log into the file-vault account "......." at this time. An error has occurred."
My password IS CORRECT. I have not changed it, and the log in window does accept my password, but it doesn't progress any further than the error message I gave above.
I'm wondering if the encryption process of file-vault is linked directly with the original installation I had of Mac OS-X before I Archived and installed.
Any thoughts/knowledge/Insight?? I want my old Mac back! (I don't recommend using file-vault). Any body else had this problem or can see what is happening to me here?
Thank you
GregI just did a backup, moved a folder with 600mb of images into a different folder, and did another backup. The free space on the backup drive dropped by the size of the folder's contents. The backup copied the files as I watched in System Preferences, and it looked like it was really copying the files to the external drive again. It looks like Time Machine isn't as smart as I hoped in this regard.
Still - I'd think the wasted space is only in the every-hour-for-the-last-24-hours bucket of Time Machine. I'm guessing the every hour backups are like a sliding window, where a backup that's 24 hours old drops out every hour rather than all the hourly backups getting wiped at midnight and starting over.
Regardless, only one version of the moved folder will eventually be stored as the daily backup for that day. I don't have proof, but that's what I think.
So, if you've moved a bunch of folders around or renamed them, the extra copies of the same exact files should drop off within 24 hours.
That's my interpretation, but I'm in no way positive!! The lengthy Ars review didn't offer an answer to this question. -
Question from renaming a file and copy a file
Hi
Like I tell in subject I have a question about those 2 functions.
Well I have a program that will copy files to an other directory for backup. Those files can have so to 1GB. Well I wrote a my code on using FileChannel and that takes some good time to copy it to the other place.
But then I tried just for fun something different like renaming the file to that path. For example:
Orignal File: file.db <-- +- 1GB same directory as the jar file
to renamed file: ../../../test/file.db
That goes very fast and I can open the file without lost of data.
But what is the difference between both function because they do the same just that rename is much faster.
Thx in adavance for your helpBut what is the difference between both function
because they do the same just that rename is much
faster.Copying a file involves copying all the data of the file from one physical location on the disk to another. That involves a good deal of IO.
Renaming/moving a file is usually implemented on platforms in such a way that the data remains at the same location and file table entry is modified. -
Hello,
My mistake:
im new to keynotes and its icloud, and figured it would work like dropbox.
I finished my 6 hours keynote session.
So, working on Keynotes and the file in Cloud, i decided to make a stripped version of less MB by deleting slides.
Renamed the file, moved the file to my desktop, and started deleting images and sensitive text slides
Than I realised, i might have not been back-uped from icloud.
PROBLEM
file not in Icloud anymore
half of my keynote file stripped, and cannot undo anymore
looked on discussions for hours, no real solutions yet
Also file not in "HIDDEN" Library/mobile documents...
Status: all software updated.
Downloaded: Diskdrill
Found: file00075.db3 file (could be about the size of my file)
Issue: cannot retrieve the file, even just the text back im already happy
QUESTION:
is there any way:
1) Icloud somehow has a backup of a file that is moved from icloud to desktop?
2) once the files was fully on the desktop, but was renamed and closed, is there no temp file? How to find?
3) how can i open this *.db3 files, or even, how to find them back in finder?
I fear the worst...
ThanksJust happened to my lost 12 hours of work, been saving just fine all day then WHAM.

I lost the edits of photos ; moved files in Windows Explorer
Hello, I lost the edits of photos because I moved files/folder in Windows Explorer, also renamed a few.
I have a backup of the old (valid) catalog and of the old file structure/ filenames that I made with robocopy.
But I dont know how to get this "old version" in my actual catalog. I did not use xmp-files.
When exchanging the actual catalog with the old one and copying the files from backup to the original place, I have the edits backup. But on this state all my "newer" edits are gone. Logically...
Can you help me?I have the same issue. I searched and finally got only one answer is -- Apple suggest customer using iMAC to transfer and backup photos instead of Windows. How great the solution is it!

Problem: Programs (such as TextEdit) focus to a moved file
I've found serious problems with a new "feature" of Lion (or at least of TextEdit, I haven't tried to replicate the problem with other programs).
The feature is that if you have a file open in TextEdit, then rename the file in Terminal, Finder, or other program, then TextEdit will switch to the moved file. That is, if you have a file called "hello.txt" open in TextEdit, and move the file to "hello2.txt", the TextEdit will switch to "hello2.txt".
Now, this creates plenty of problems when using other programs.
For instance, if I modify the file with another text editor called Emacs, Emacs will create a backup file. Guess what TextEdit will do? It will switch to the backup file.
If there's a conflict in Dropbox, Dropbox will create a "deleted"-file of the conflict. TextEdit will switch to the "deleted"-file.
I'm sure many other programs create similar issues, as I found these problems within a day of using Lion's TextEdit.Humm well you probably don't want to disconnect your WiFi every time you run this application but i was going to say try putting it in airplane mode

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997) I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive. It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files. Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted. That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup. You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue? It should equal out. And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup. None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged. How can I fix this? The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change. Help!!It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

Moving files from iMac to an external drive
I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?
Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
Hope that helps. -
Renaming a file in Sender channel
Hi, a newbie here.
I have to pick up a file via ftp from a system and put it into an R3. I have also to rename the file in the sender with another extension for backup.
Is there any way to do this without creating another communication channel?
Thanks in advance!Hi Ifiaki,
If you are on SP15 or later, you can run Operating System Command Before Message Processing.
See the details at the below link.

Trouble Moving Files in Dreamweaver (CS3)
Hi,
Having a real problem maneuvering some files around.
At the moment I have my index.html file which links to a folder called 2009website, which contains 4 folders each with a mini site in.
So for instance the index file is pointing to 2009website/design/print.html
and also
2009website/business/clientportfolio.html
etc, etc.
What I want to do is take those 4 mini sites outside of the 2009website folder so that my index file points to:
design/print.html
and
business/clientportfolio.html
So I've moved the folders in my Files Panel and clicked "Update links" in the dialog box which seemed to work nicely. Only problem is all the images and css links within the HTML are still looking in the 2009website folder, i.e.
2009website/design/css/design.css (and there's nothing in that folder anymore)
Is there anyway I can remove the 4 folders and have the internal links update so they drop the 2009website/ and just look for the relevant folder and file?
I know it's my own fault for putting everything inside the 2009website folder when there was no real need to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.When you say you updated the links and everything seems to be ok - do you see any broken links within DW design view itself?
If the files are pointing to that particular folder for the images and the css, but there is Nothing in the folders, then there is a major issue I think.
This means that the updating of the links didn't work as you expected - if the files are not in the relevant folders, but the images and css are pointing to them, then you should be seeing broken links...
What you could try:
Backup what you have now - so it doesn't get any messier :-) (hopefully you have a backup copy of the original before you starting moving files !)
If you are sure that the files are all within the root of the site and not within that 2009 folder, then maybe do a find and replace and remove the beginning of the url, so that it points to where you moved the files to. Try it on one page and see if it makes a difference.
You could also try and move around the images folder and the css folder and see if you get a pop up with DW asking if you want to update the links and see what happens.
Another idea - do you have an images folder defined in the site definition?
Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do. -
10.9.4 Finder crash when renaming any file or folder
Since I updated yo 10.9.4, I can't rename any file with finder. After renaming a file, when I hit "enter", Finder restarts and file is not renamed.
Tried with new user account: same issue.
Tried in Safe Mode, same issue.
The only way right now to rename a folder is to use the Terminal move command.
