Indb or Not?

Most of the publications I create in InDesign are 4-8 pages and it's easiest for me to just use a template that contains a cover page, inner pages, and a back cover all in one ID file. Occasionally, I need to make larger books (rarely more than a combined 36 pages), with a cover, inside cover, ToC, separate types of inner pages, an index, an inside back cover page, and a back page. These I make as separate files linked within an indb, continuing the tradition of the way they've been done before I got here.
Aside from the fact that it's faster to open each of the separate sections because sometimes some of them have a lot of placed images, is there any other particular benefit to continuing to create the larger publications as a series of sections, linked to an indb file, rather than condensing all of the pages into one file? I can easily have as many master pages as I need and control the section numbering so I don't see any other benefit. Still, I create the larger publications so rarely that I may well be overlooking some positives to using the indb and a series of files.
I ask primarily because we're about to do six or seven of these larger publications and, as rarely happens, have enough notice that I can create a new template - in fact, I'll have to update the old templates with our new logo anyway. Also, I'll be exporting them as epub in addition to pdf, which seems like it would be easier if it was all one file. As near as I can tell, none of the upcoming projects will have enough placed images that opening or saving them all as one file will be an issue.
I have CS6, if that makes any difference.

Peter, thank you for those points. The file damage issue hasn't come up for me with regard to InDesign files so that wouldn't have occurred to me. I haven't been keeping versions of publications because most of them are small-ish and rarely take me more than a couple of hours, so they're converted to PDF before I close the file. I should be, though, and most especially with these larger ones, which go back to the author and editor for at least a day after I finish the layout.
Tom, I'll definitely be the only person working in InDesign. No one else will touch the program unless the company pays for training and the company won't pay for training, so it's just me.
I appreciate the responses. I don't see anything overwhelming to compel me to do these as books at this point but I've got another day or so before I need to work on the templates so I'll keep an eye out. )

  • Cross-reference mixup after package

    Hi,
    I've got a question regarding InDesign cross-reference.
    Here's the background:
    The original source is stored in F drive.
    Packaged source is stored in C drive.
    For each of my drafts, I need to attach the packaged source with the PDF.
    I have 10 cross references in a 100 page document.
    The question is this:
    When I package the InDesign files, I assumed that my cross references will be updated to the InDesign files in the packaging directory.
    But when I checked them out, the cross references were still linked to the original source. So I had to manually update each cross reference to the packaging directory.
    Although the PDF works fine, I have some concerns about this situation.
    Does any one else had this problem? If so, are there any solutions to this issue?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thx.

    Books are funny creatures. Another thing that confuses a lot of users is that if you make a copy of the .indb file and all the component .indd files, the copied .indb does not point to the copied .indds, but retains the links to the original locations.

  • InDesign CS5.5 EPUB export not showing cover image in Adobe Digital Editions

    I have a document that I am trying to ensure is reflecting the cover image prior to uploading to several EPUB sites like google and Barnes and Noble. I am using Adobe Digital Editions, Calibre, Firefox (EPUBReader) to do the troubleshooting on the document. Calibre shows the cover image Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) does not. Are their any known problems with ADE not reflecting the cover image that I need to be aware of before I continue working on this?
    The ADE help says the following:
    "Once the items are in your library, there are two ways to view the content of any bookshelf. You can view thumbnails of your items. The thumbnail is the cover page of the item (or just the first page if it doesn't have a cover page). In this view, you see the set of thumbnails and some information about each item (author, title). You can also sort the order in which the items are shown by author, title, date created, number of pages, and so forth."
    Here is basic informaiton. I have a cover page in my export to EPUB but ADE will only show the first page. Again Calibre shows the cover page.
    CS 5.5
    The project is a book (indb) composed of multiple documents (indd)
    Exporting as book as an EPUB
    On general tab I am "Use existing image"
    I am rasterizing the first image in Indesign via the "Object - Object export options" but I am not selecting that option when on the general tab of the Export to EPUB options. I am chosing a file from my disk. I thought that maybe the file name was too long but I changed the image to "cover.jpg" and reexported it but it still does not work.
    Here are the contents of the content.opf file with all the pointers. I have updated the file as I believe you can tell with guides, creation date, etc....
    It passes the SIGIL check.
    The image name is Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg. It is 300 dpi and 1650 x 2550. I could also cut in the one that I did for cover.jpg but it only replaces the file name.

    I have also been trying to get this cover image to display on PC for NOOK but it appears that everyone is having hits problem too. I have followed some trouble shooting guides and renamed the jpg image, Democracy in Business Dust Jacket 300dpi.jpg to cover.jpg but that doesn't seem to work either for NOOK.
    Any help you can give would be appreciated. I am new to InDesign (I know you probably hate hearing that, but I have gotten so close to being done overcoming all the new user hurdles). I think this is my last one before uploading to the appropriate sites - PS. I got the cover page to show up on the Kindle but not Adobe's own product.
    Thanks

    ebookjunkie, I have just used InDesign to publish two very short "books" (.99 cent variety) and started this thread with the first question. Look to Bob for the expert advice. This is neophyte advice from someone moving from publishing a full book using Word to EPUB/Kindle and now using InDesign to publish to EPUB/Kindle.
    First ADE is useless. I say this out of frustration of trying to use it to troubleshoot problems and it has so many problems in displaying an EPUB that you spend a lot of time troubleshooting ADE issues rather than EPUB problems. The problems are not limited to but won't display a cover page properly, text wrapping is iffy, Drop caps a problem, bringing over supported items like drop caps, all small caps, etc.... are also issues as best I can tell. Humble opinion is delete off your desktop. I use the following to troubleshoot my EPUB's/Kindle books on my Windows platform; Calibre, Barnes and Noble's Nook for PC and iPhone iTunes for EPUB (Sigil to look for errors); and for Kindle, Kindle previewer and Kindle for the PC. Even after doing this, I just today saw my book a buyer's Android "Reader" and the pictures did not display at all. So it is publish once and test everywhere! Unfortunately, you just can't test all the possible devices and iterations of readers. (I am from IBM and we couldn't do it, so how publishers are supposed to figure it out is beyond me!)
    On the absolutely great news end, you will see a lot of problems about placing images on the iPad with a lot of workarounds. They apparently (Apple) have fixed this as my two publications show images nicely now on both the iPhone and iPad with the iTunes bookshelf/reader. They were "microdots" when viewed previously. I did nothing to fix it and was just not going to publish to the iPAd and just tested them a few weeks ago and they display perfectly. So Apple has fixed the problem. If it looks good on the Nook for PC, it should look good on the iPAD/iPhone now as best I can tell.
    Cheers

  • A book file in InDesign CS3 (.indb) - Mac and PC - crashing issue

    Several months ago, I posted that when I indexed a 300-page book with lots of chapter, generating the index crashed InDesign. This happened initially on a PC running Windows XP home. When I took the book to a Macintosh, it happened also.
    One thing I had done, and I don't know if this makes a difference, is changed words that already had index tags attached to them.
    It has been several months since I've tried this - I've been waiting until this book was completely written before trying again.
    Since this happened, I've also tried to synchronize styles and that also crashed InDesign. Before the index 'broke', both generating the index and synchronizing styles worked like perfectly - amazing functions of InDesign and makes working with a book much easier.
    Now the book is ready. I stripped all of the index codes from the entire book using search and replace, and then the first time I tried to open the Index window, it crashed again.
    When it recovered, there was a message that 5 of my 24 documents in this book may be damaged.
    So I tried opening the indb file, opening the Indexing window, THEN opening the book files and it crashed. I was able to get the error message this time: An exception unkown software exception (0xc000000d) ocurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program.
    When InDesign came back up, I closed the Index window and was able to open all of the book's files with no problem.
    My questions are:
    1 - Is there any way to find out where/how those files are damaged?
    2 - Does anyone know what may cause an Index generation or style synchronization to crash InDesign - and then not fix the problem?
    3 - Could this be something other than the index, and how do I figure out what it might be?
    This book is now 374 pages in 24 documents, and I don't think there is a way to go backwards in the InDesign process at this point.
    I'm not sure how clear I'm being with all of this, but the book is to go to the printer Monday and I can't index it.
    I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

    Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
    I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
    BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

  • Indesign CS5.5 Not Splitting at Chapters on ePub Export

    I have a single document book in InDesign CS5.5. (Version 7.5.2)
    The file is DFSS55ePub.indd. It is just a single .indd file, not a .indb
    Every time on export to ePub, it is not respecting the Break Document at Paragraph Style: Chapter Title.
    I get a single 444K .html file in the OEBPS folder of the resulting ePub.
    Since that is over the 300K limit, it fails validation.
    I've defined a table of contents called TOC
    Level 1: Chapter Title (using a numbered List called Chapter)
    Level 1: Chapter Title FM (No numbers for these headings in the front matter)
    Level 2: QH  (These are subheads within the chapter. There are admittedly a lot of these - 160 across 10 chapters)
    The file started its life as DFSS55Print.indd with facing pages, a printing table of contents and index. The current file is a single story, no facing pages. I deleted the index and table of contents since I knew the export to epub would do this anyway.
    I did generate a Table of Contents in a frame on the pasteboard based on a suggestion in another topic.
    When I export, the settings on the Contents tab are:
    Format for EPUB Content: XHTML
    Use InDesign TOC Style: TOC
    Break Document at Paragraph Style: Chapter Title
    Generate CSS
    Include Style Definitions
    I even tried exporting to IDML, opening, updating the table of contents, and re-exporting. Same problem.
    I realize I could open in Sigil and split the html, but I swore after I upgraded to 5.5 I would never have to go back to Sigil.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance
    Bill

    I've got it working.
    Perhaps the problem was the numbered list used in the Chapter Title paragraph style? I had said to convert numbered lists to text in the ePub Export dialog.
    Some combination of these steps solved the problem in case others encounter the same thing:
    a) Changed the chapter headings using the Chapter Title paragraph style to Chapter Title FM. This style does not used a numbered list. Of course, I had to manually type "Chapter 1" - before each chapter title.
    b) Once all occurences of the Chapter Title paragraph style were gone, I redefined the TOC definition to remove Chapter Title. This leaves me with a single Level 1 and a single Level 2.
    c) Updated the TOC with the new definition.
    d) Moved the TOC frame from the pasteboard to some blank space in the front matter. I did not bother to make the frame large enough for all the text, since InDesign will delete this upon export.
    e) Export to PDF. On the third panel, changed the "break at: Chapter Title" to "break at: Chapter Title FM"
    My theory is getting rid of the numbered list in the chapter paragraph styles probably solved the problem. Thanks to all who took the time to check out the discussion.

  • InDesign "Save As" dialog box for every operation in INDB book file; updating page numbers, etc.

    So I haven't used INDB files in awhile in InDesign, and today was the first time I attempted to adjust an old INDB (created originally with CS5).  For every operation of adjusting the book file, such as updating page/section number or adding/removing an INDD file I get a Save As dialog box for each constiuent INDD file.  This is quite annoying since the book has lots of INDDs, and I have to click through the tedious save as with each.  I previously worked with INDBs in CS5, and never encountered this, there was no need to save each INDD in the book just to update the page numbers.  I tried creating a new INDB in CS5.5 thinking that maybe it was because I was working from a file created with an older version of InDesign.  Does anyone know if there is a way to suppress the Save As dialog?  Another thing I noticed that is supremely frustrating is that this new build of InDesign doesn't default to saving the file in its original location, and I have unwittingly ended up saving files in other places, only to later realize it.  I am using InDesign CS5.5 Ver. 7.5.2 on Mac OSX 10.7.3  Any help is greatly appreciated.

    It will only happen once (and frankly, what you are doing is a very bad idea).
    When you open the old book in CS5, you are converting to the new format. All of the legacy files also need to be converted, even if added to a new book in CS5.5, hence the Save As since ID will not overwrite the old versions until you tell it to (and that's the bad idea). I strongly recommend (though it's too late for any books you've already updated and overwritten) that you either continue to edit in the old version, or that you take the time to open each file in the original version if it's older than CS5, then export to interchange format (.inx or .idml, depending on version), open those files in CS5.5, save with new names so you don't overwrite anything, then add to a new book and proceed.
    One of the reasons I recommend this seemingly time-consuming approach is that there are too many reports (another one yesterday) of some sort of problem that pops up late in the editing cycle when converting legacy files to CS5/5.5 by opening them directly and saving. This is a belt and suspenders insurance approach, and is far less labor intensive than starting over, which might end up being your other option down the road if something goes wrong.

  • CS3 - How can I preserve Links and Hyperlinks in my INDB?

    I am still pretty new to ID, so please speak slowly :)
    My problem - I create an INDB that consists of several indd chapters. The chapters include numerous Links (to PNG & PSD images) and Hyperlinks both to Text anchors to other chapters within the INDB, as well as to URLs. I have all items saved on my local HD. Once complete, I do "Package for Print", check the Preflight report to make sure all is OK (it is) and then save the new INDB folder in a new location on my local HD. This all seems to work just fine, BUT if I move this packaged INDB folder (such as to a backup drive, or give to another worker that copies it to their HD), upon opening the INDB file, some links and Hyperlinks are broken.
    It seems that these broken Links and Hyperlinks are still pointing to the original locations on my HD. But obviously not all are, since most links/hyperlinks DO work fine. The Hyperlinks to Text anchors within other indd chapters seem to typically break. Is there a way to force these to reference the packaged assets within the INDB folder? Seems ID would be smart enough to look there itself!
    Also, I was creating some Hyperlinks as "cross referenced" - that is, I created a URL Hyperlink Destination in Chapter 1 indd and then created Hyperlinks pointing to it from other chapter indd in the book. I have learned that these ALWAYS break in the above scenario, so I started creating the URL destination within the same chapter indd and pointing to it there rather than across chapters. But this is just more work to keep re-creating the same URL destination in every indd!
    I'll keep running into these problems since I need to share my finished INDB with other CS3 users. I also would like to be able to do a Save As of the INDB when creating a revised, newer version, but I see this also results in the new INDB links/hyperlinks still pointing to the original INDB's assets! Any way to make the Save As update the Links/Hyperlinks in the new INDB?
    Thanks greatly for any insight. I can find no help in the Help on these issues!

    The title of the post is this
    How can I preserve row and column addresses on multiple cells at once in Numbers?
    I restated the Question as follows
    Can "Preserve Row" an / or "Preserve Column" be set on multiple cells at the same time.
    In both cases it is not asked if multiple cells can be set to....
    That is a given.
    Step back a second...  It is like selecting multiple cells and setting the text color of the currently selected cells to red. This can be done. More than one cell at a time modified because they are currently selected.
    Whats is being asked is:  if more than one cell is selected at the same time can the settings "Preserve Row" an / or "Preserve Column" be applied. No table I put up will help with that question.
    YES or NO
    If YES how?

  • Table of contents file not taking book files into account

    Hi everyone,
    I've used Indesign's book panel to manage the chapters in a book that I've typeset. I set up the table of contents style (in a TOC document which is part of the books panel) and made sure that it used all the book chapters when compiling the table of contents by checking the option in the TOC styles diaglogue box.
    For some reason, the table of contents is ignoring all of the styles in the chapter files so it's not including anything in the table of contents other than a few headings that are within the file that contains the table of contents.
    I'm noticing that Indesign is creating a whole lot of duplicate files with a string of numbers appended to the file name, eg.
    Newbook_Cha531549083577
    These seem to duplicates of the chapter files but I have no idea why Indesign is creating them so I'm wondering whether I've got some corruption happening and whether this may be causing the problem with the table of contents.
    Has anyone had a similar problem and if yes, is there any solution?
    Really appreciate any advice.

    Peter,
    I'm having the same problem as gwh. The TOC won't go beyond the first document. All my style names are the same. I don't have style groups.
    To make the book I began with one long document that included all the chapters. I broke it into chapters by copying and pasting into new .indd documents (each one created by Save As from the first) and adding all those documents to the book.
    Generating the TOC from the one long .indd document works perfectly. I just can't get it to generate from the book (.indb) doc.
    I have all the documents in the book open. I have the first one active (in front). I generate the TOC, and I get only the entries for the first document. Here's a screenshot of my TOC box. I must be missing something really simple, huh?  (I'm using CS5)

  • Script to batch export multiple Books (.indb) to PDF

    I have multiple InDesign Book files that I would like to batch export to PDFs, respectively. (Not looking to combine multiple books into a single PDF. Just a 1 to 1 PDF export for each Book file.)
    In googling for an answer, I found Peter Kahrel's script for doing just this for other InDesign files, but it does not work for Books. http://www.kahrel.plus.com/indesign/batch_convert.html
    Does anyone know of a solution (paid or otherwise) for this process?  Opening up each Book and exporting to PDF from the ID menu takes quite a bit of time when doing this for several dozen files.
    Looking forward to any discussion to come up with a solution if one can be found... Mr. Kahrel's javascript file is a binary js file, so it can't be modified as is, and other solutions I've found around the web don't clearly state that they work with Book files or not.

    try below code
    before run script close all indb file
    var fileFilters = "InDesign:*.indb*";
    var myFolder = Folder.selectDialog ("choose Folder", fileFilters, false);
    var files = myFolder.getFiles("*.indb");
    for(i = 0; i < files.length; i++)
           var theDocument = app.open(File(files[i]), true);
             with ( theDocument ) {
                alert ( theDocument.name)
                 exportPdf(theDocument)
    function exportPdf(theDocument)
          myFilePath = myFolder + "/" +  theDocument.name + "_" + ".pdf";
            myFile = new File(myFilePath);
              theDocument.exportFile(ExportFormat.pdfType, myFile, false, app.pdfExportPresets.item('[Smallest File Size]'));
    theDocument.close(SaveOptions.no)

  • Incorrect images from .indb file export to ePub in Indesign CS6

    I am having problems exporting images to ePub and get a different result from the same file depending on whether I export directly from the .indd file or from the .indb file.
    When I export to ePub from the individual chapter (.indd) file, everything is fine and the images appear in the correct locations where they have been anchored.
    When I export via the book  (.indb) file, images are being replaced with the incorrect file in the resulting ePub.
    Looking at the HTML, it seems not all images are being exported from the .indb file and when the image is missing, Indesign is substituting the next available image from the alphabetical list in the images folder so I'm getting incorrect images peppered throughout the book.
    Any idea where I've gone wrong and how to fix it? I've produced several ePubs with images and never come across this before.
    More details on how I've set up the files and any other info I think might be relevant below if needed.
    - I'm using Indesign CS6 (8.0.1)
    - I'm producing an 11 chapter book.
    - Each chapter is a separate .indd file for ease of editing.
    - These 11 files have been added to an .indb file for export to ePub.
    - Images are all anchored to their captions within the text.
    - On Export to ePub settings for images I have selected to insert a page break before the image and that settings apply to anchopred objects.
    Nothing else is selected (I don't want to preserve appearance from layout.)
    - I'm using the Articles panel feature for order of content.
    - In the original file supplied, the images were placed as .tiff images. I saved them to jpeg and relinked them using the "relink to folder" and "match same file but this extension" options.
    - No links are flagged as missing.
    Any help much appreciated.

    The solution points to how, it appears, the book panel export is functioning: each file exports a set of tags referenced to itself; file01 adds a "1" to its tags, and so forth. What I was able to do was use a file referencing all of the tags in the style suite in two ways:
    first, I exported to an epub the single file, creating a fairly clean CSS, which I then extracted and renamed;
    then, making certain that file was the "source" file in the book panel, I mapped for export all of the tags, being careful to be certain each tag/class combo was same as in renamed clean CSS;
    I synchronized the whole shebang;
    I exported to epub, adding my clean CSS as an external style sheet, selecting only "include embeddable fonts".
    Bingo!

  • [CS3/4] activeBook does not point to "active Book"

    Is it me misunderstanding something, or is the "activeBook" property broken?
    Found out the hard way today that "app.activeBook" does *not* point to the, erm, 'active' book. Or maybe I don't understand what makes it the active one ... Remember, Books come in a palette, and while you can have one in the front and another in the back (which, I *think*, ought to make the visible one the 'active' book), you can also drag one book file out of it and put it elsewhere on your desktop. Now which one is active? Is the answer a simple "The one ID tells you is active, through the Application's 'activeBook' property"? Nope. That doesn't work at all.
    In InDesign CS3 (Windows -- in case it makes a difference), app.activeBook always reports the alphabetically first one, of all your opened books. Didn't think of checking on CS4/Windows at work, but my home CS4/Mac does it exactly the opposite way: it always reports the alphabetically last one!
    Steps to recreate:
    1. Write a Javascript that simply reports the active book's name:
        alert (app.activeBook.name)
    2. Create a new book file "Book A". It will open a Books panel, and 'Book A' is the only item in there. Running the who-am-i script tells you "Book A.indb".
    3. Now create a second book file "Book B". It will appear in the Books panel and be active -- the visible book. Sure enough, the who-am-i tells you now "Book B.indb".
    4. So it works? No. Select "Book A" in the panel. The script still thinks "Book B" is active.
    5. Drag one of the books out of its palette onto your workspace -- now you cannot see which one *is* active. The script ensures you it's still "Book B", and no amount of clicking, selecting, or otherwise manipulating either palette will make it change its mind.
    I think 'activeBook' is a rather bad thought-out function -- after all, if you have two panels, and both have the Add document buttons and a menu, which one can be considered "active"?
    On the other hand, the only time you -- yes you! John Q. User! -- would be sure to be able to tell which one is active, is when they are both in the same palette, one in front and the other in the back. But the script proves that wrong.
    Maybe Adobe uses some other definition of the word 'active', for Books only? As far as I can tell, it works as expected for the two other properties activeDocument and activeWindow ...

    What you are describing ia not a scripting bug, but rather a bug in the InDesign application, that I think I filed a couple of month's back. The issue cropped up in a C++ plug-in where it became obvious that InDesign can't figure out which book is active.
    The bug is, that clicking on the little tab-like piece of a book panel doesn't trigger the kSetCurrentActiveBookCmdBoss Command notifying InDesign that the book has changed. In order to trigger command it is necesary to click on the main panel or it's flyout menu.
    Since clicking on flyout menu makes front book active this bug rarely shows itself, except of course when writing a script.
    File a bug report and maybe they'll fix this among many other book bugs.

  • How to open a book.indb file at full size?

    I have a desktop shortcut that opens a book.indb file, which holds info for about 20+ chapters. But when the Book palette opens, it always shows just the first 8 chapters. I have to drag the bottom of the palette down to see the entire contents. It's not exactly a major issue, but is there a way to get the Book pallette to display its entire contents when it opens?
    Also, I've set up my WinXP PC so that all palettes open on the secondary monitor. When I re-open InDesign, it remembers the positions of each palette on the secondary monitor, with the exception of the Book palette. This one always opens on the primary monitor and I need to drag it over to the secondary monitor to get it out of the way. Again, no big deal but it would be nice if InDesign could remember where to place this palette.
    Any suggestions about the above?
    Thanks, John

    Hi,
    My theory is that Windows get confused when it is opening the program file and the following intsructions should create a unique copy. I have produced the instructions in detail because I am never sure how much people are use to - forgive me you know much of it.
    Open Windows or Folder Explorer
    Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 12
    Look for PhotoshopElementsEditor.exe
    Right click on the file and select Copy
    Right click on a blank space and select Paste - you should get a prompt asking if you want to continue - you do - this should produce a copy of the file
    Rename PhotoshopElementsEditor - Copy.exe to PSE 12 ED  - you should get a prompt asking if you want to continue - you do
    Close the Explorer
    In the Windows Control Panel, select Default Programs
    In Default Programs, Select Associate a file type … - it will take a while to display the list
    Scroll down to the type you want to select - say .jpg and select it
    Click on the Change program button
    Click on the Browse button
    Search for the PSE 12 ED file renamed in 6 above, select it and then click on the Open button
    Click on OK and close the Default Programs
    Now try your tests. I can get multiple files to open as well as retain Expert mode.
    Good luck

  • Pages Page Numbering not working correctly in iOS 5.01

    Whenever I set up Auto Numbering for a Page footer in Pages, it gives me high negative numbers instead of real page number or counts. I'll get -23829839282 or -2893282922 of -2973287372 instead of Page 2, or Page 2 of 4.
    This works in the Desktop Pages, just not the iOS one. On my iPad, this makes using the page numbering function useless. Take note, this function was working before I upgraded from 4.3.3.

    It sounds as if you are starting with a Left Hand Facing page (inside cove page?). Hence, the head scratching for ForwardSpread. I've only had a need to do this once, this week. UnCheck allow pages to Shuffle (counter-intuitive to me) and drag page icons if it siuts your view.
    Facing pages is not necessary to accomplish your book document, but is more a visual assistance in layout and possibly items crossing the spine. If it helps, and I think not, you can turn it off in the Document Setup; be mindful of anything crossing the spine.
    The MOVE work-around - if you indeed have Auto Numbering on, possibly the documents or the indb book filehave some corruption. You can create a new Book and load the existing documents to it relatively quickly; Moving pages from one doc to another would eliminate any document corruption. (You would need to define Auto Numbering in the new document(s))
    Can you post a screen shot of Chapter2 or Chapter3 Page Numbering option?  (btw, you mentiond Chapter 2 was fine; I'm going to refer to the files as listed in your original post)
    Message was edited by: Daniel Flavin - Turning off Facing Pages will lose any unique items on the Right Hand Master Page

  • Doubt in Book (.indb)

    Hi All,
    Requirement:
    How can we use book concept (.indb). Actually i have script for override all master page item in the active Document only.
    But I want to override all the BookContents in the active Book(.indb) (i.e., folio1.indd, folio2.indd, folio3.indd, folio4.indd, folio5.indd) see attachment.
    Here is trying code:
    For the single document only (working good):
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument
    var myPages = myDocument.pages;
    for(i=0; i < myPages.length; i++) {
         OverrideMasterItems();
    function OverrideMasterItems() {
      var allItems = myDocument.pages[i].appliedMaster.pageItems.everyItem().getElements();
      for(var j=0;j<allItems.length;j++){
        try{allItems[j].override(myDocument.pages[i])}
        catch(e){}
    But my requirement is override all master page item through book(.indb)
    Trying code is (not working):
    //Over writing the master page elements through Book(.indb)
    var myBook = app.books[0]
    var myBookContents =app.books[0].bookContents.everyItem().getElements()
    var myPages = myBookContents.pages;

    app.open (app.activeBook.bookContents[i].fullName, true)

    for( var i = app.activeBook.bookContents.length-1 ; i>=0 ; i-- )
                app.open (app.activeBook.bookContents[i].fullName, false).close(SaveOptions.ASK);
    But as per my requirement i want to open all the documents(bookContents) in the book, override all master page elements and close all the documents in the book
    Trying Script is:

  • Using print booklet with an indb file

    HI there
    I've been asked to stand in at the last moment to give a lecture on imposition tomorrow. The tutors files that I have been given however include an .indb (InDesign Book) file - which doesn't seem to allow me to use the print booklet option in Indesign 4. I can only print booklet with individual chapters.
    What I want to do is use the print booklet to create a ps file which I'm going to then open in acrobat to show the imposition layout. I can do this with a single file, but not with a book - can anyone help? Or suggest another way of showing this. I don't want to have to  play about with the book at thie late stage of the night to create a new indesign document - unless I really have no choice.
    Thanks
    Ewan

    A projection screen? I make do with a single sheet. Draw these numbers on the front, four columns and two rows -- the top row should be drawn upside down:
    1 16 13 4
    8 9 12 5
    flip over the page horizontally (so the upside down '1' at the top left is at the back of top right), then draw these numbers (again, top row upside down):
    3 14 15 2
    6 11 10 7
    Show sheet to students, front and back. Roll up sleeves.
    Fold in half, column 2/7 on top of 3/6. Fold in half again, column 13/4 on top of 12/5. Fold in half again, page 8 on top of 9. Now you should see a '1' in front of you and a '16' at the back. Slice edges open, show pages in Perfect Bound order.
    Bow, accept applause.
